Tiffany & Co. Celebrates the Reopening of Its New York City Flagship, The Landmark

The iconic jeweler Tiffany & Co. just completed the first holistic renovation to its storied flagship on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City since the store opened in 1940. Some of the first people who got to see the new space were famous friends of the brand. Tiffany & Co. hosted an epic celebration with a guest list that merged A-list entertainers with renowned artists. Hailey Bieber, Gal Gadot, Blake Lively, Zoë Kravitz, Florence Pugh and Gabrielle Union were just some of Hollywood’s biggest stars who mingled with art world titans like Jeff Koons and Daniel Arsham. To fête the flagship, now dubbed “The Landmark,” the jeweler went all out. Guests enjoyed an opening set by DJ Mia Moretti and a performance from another N.Y.C. institution, the Radio City Rockettes. Mark Ronson’s rousing DJ set followed the exclusive party’s headline act, Katy Perry. Legendary architect Peter Marino and OMA New York’s Shohei Shigematsu were tasked with turning the 10-story boutique into a jewelry store and cultural hub. One of the most striking features in the new design is a sculptural spiral staircase connecting floors 3 through 8 that’s inspired by the iconic biomorphic designs of Elsa Peretti. In addition to beautiful Tiffany & Co. pieces for sale, about 40 artworks—including never-before-seen Tiffany-commissioned pieces—will be on display. As you plan your visit, don’t forget to enjoy offerings from renowned chef Daniel Boulud at the Blue Box Café as you marvel at the stunning design and dazzling diamonds at Tiffany’s.

THE NEW & TH E NOW

Louis Vuitton SUMMERS OUT EAST

The French luxury brand’s first store in the Hamptons is filled with seasonal bespoke offerings

Asummer of shopping always awaits in East Hampton, as luxury fashion houses open pop-ups and host exclusive events throughout the season. Many favorites found on Fifth Avenue in New York City head East during the warmer months, and the latest high-end brand to arrive right on Main Street is Louis Vuitton. The new store is a first in the Hamptons for the French maison, and the brand is going all out. In addition to the complete array of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, shoes, leather goods, accessories and fragrance that will be available to shop, there will also be elevated items from the métiers (including leather goods and high jewelry and watches) and the LV Volt and LV Diamonds jewelry collections. Shoppers will also spot pieces not found anywhere else, like a blue and white monogrammed Pareo stole and fan with the word “Hamptons” written across it, sold exclusively at the store. There will also be seasonal collections and bespoke offerings that cater to everything one wants and needs for summer. There’s a new, limited-edition Neverfull bag, plus the LV by the Pool collection, which splashes its blue and white color palette on ready-to-wear, handbags, accessories, hardsided pieces and décor. If you’re looking for lifestyle pieces, the new tableware

collection and Objets Nomades lanterns in seaside hues are perfect beach house décor. Other Objets Nomades pieces that will look right at home in the Hamptons include a Cocoon chair by Campana and hammocks by Atelier Oi. Of course, special versions of Louis Vuitton’s classic hardside trunks can be found, including gaming trunks like the Malle Golf or the Vanity Mahjong version.

The layout of the new Main Street store evokes a walk on the beach through its sophisticated natural tones and coastal accents, natural jute rugs, banana palms and petrified wood fixtures by New York-based designer Andrianna Shamaris. Instead of a sandy boardwalk, the floor is covered in blue and white tiles with the brand’s signature monogram flower. The print can be found in other design elements, like a surfboard, beach chairs and pillows. Look up and guests will see a constellation of lanterns by Zanellato/Bortotto in a floating ceiling installation.

This may be the brand’s first store in the Hamptons, but between the coastal décor and summer-ready offerings, Louis Vuitton already feels like home sweet home. The new Louis Vuitton location will open seasonally from Memorial Day to September. Visit: One Main Street, East Hampton; louisvuitton.com

It's time to kick off the start of summer and Moby’s is still the place to be. The restaurant first debuted as a Montauk pop-up over a decade ago and then moved to its current spot in a charming home built in the 1880s situated along the harbor. Nautical themes run throughout the space that’s complete with a replica sailboat to set the mood.

This year, the East Hampton hotspot from Nick Hatsatouris and Lincoln Pilcher is introducing a daytime menu and bar program (can someone say “Summer Friyay”?) that features vegetable dishes, pizza from the wood-burning oven, delicious pasta, local seafood, fresh salads and more.

Some standout items include smoked bluefish, grilled octopus and summer squash. For a heartier option, the wagyu flat iron steak and Montauk swordfish are not to be missed.

With the help of bar consultant Nathalie Durrieu, guests will feel like they have been whisked to an exotic location, as her creative drinks— including daytime spritzes enjoyed in the Apertivo Room—are a mustsip. If you’re craving some oysters (Moby’s is not too far from the water, after all), a happy hour, paired with a new martini menu, will be offered weekdays.

If you're planning a bigger get-together this season, the space can accommodate up to 250 guests, thanks to its outdoor and indoor areas, which include a covered patio, the Pizza Lounge and the Apertivo Room.

There’s also a backyard lawn, firepit and courtyard area. Whether you’re a local or just visiting for the weekend, Moby’s needs to be on your Hamptons itinerary. Visit 341 Pantigo Road, East Hampton; mobysny.com

LOOKING FORWARD

Gillian Jacobs has made a name for herself as the funny girl, playing Britta Perry in the NBC sitcom Community and Mickey Dobbs in the Netflix romantic comedy Love. But before these roles, she got her start in dramatic projects, and now she’s returning to her roots in the new Netflix series Transatlantic. “For somebody who's only seen me on Community, I am sure they would think Transatlantic is a big departure. But for me, I don't see it that way,” Jacobs, 40, tells GRAZIA Gazette: Hamptons. “You always want to do something different than what you've done before, so I felt like this was a nice blend for me. As an actor, it was nice to return to something I started out doing.”

In Transatlantic, a series created by Unorthodox's Anna Winger that was inspired by true events, Jacobs plays Mary Jayne Gold, an American heiress who helps European Jews and other intellectuals escape Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Gold and Varian Fry (played by Cory Michael Smith) were both involved with the Emergency Rescue Committee (ERC), a private American relief group formed in 1940 to rescue artists and writers who wereh being persecuted by the Nazis. Through ERC's efforts, the lives of artists such as Marc Chagall and Max Ernst were spared.

Jacobs had some help getting into character thanks to Gold’s memoir and the fact that they filmed on location in Marseille, France. “We were shooting in what used to be this hotel where Mary Jayne interviewed many refugees. That was a rare gift because sometimes [acting] requires a tremendous amount of imagination and actively ignoring everything around you,” Jacobs explains. “There are still these existing buildings around the city, and it was amazing to know you are in the same space as she was. You feel something."

Jacobs may have had some help embracing her surroundings, but it’s not always easy portraying a real person. “There's some pressure when you're playing someone who is widely known, but I did as much research as I could and I had to accept that we were making a slightly fictionalized version of the story,” the star shares. “You want to honor them, but then to free yourself as an actor, you have to let that go and just focus on what you're doing. I gave myself permission to craft Mary Jayne for the show, but you also want to be respectful to someone who did such an incredible thing."

When the show premiered on April 7, Jacobs immediately received accolades and praise—especially from her mother, who couldn't stop binging episodes. “People I really respect are reaching out to me and telling me how much they love the show, which is really reaffirming,” Jacobs says. “That's an amazing thing about being on Netflix, knowing it reaches a global audience. It's nice to be seen by people around the world.”

One reason she thinks the show’s been such a success is that it’s so different from others she’s seen. “It feels new and singular, and it's not too often you can say that as an actor,” Jacobs notes. “This story was also completely unknown to me, and I'm so inspired by these incredible people. There are many more stories to be told.”

What You Should Be

Reading This Summer

A PERFECT VINTAGE

Chelsea Fagan’s new release (coming out June 6) will transport readers to the French countryside, where the fictional Lea Mortimer is a care-free and single consultant who helps transform old chateaux into boutique hotels. After she falls for the much-younger son of her boss, the drama ensues.

The Juilliard-trained star considers herself “really lucky” to have worked with legends in the industry including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michael Shannon, Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich, among others. Next, she hopes to cross paths with film luminaries Wes Anderson or Ridley Scott. “I would love to intern on a Ridley set and see the way he shoots because I think he's such an incredible director. I could go on and on!"

Meanwhile, Jacobs has honed skills beyond acting. “I'm learning how to be a documentarian,” she reveals. “I like learning about something entirely new. I have this new skill set of putting together a compelling documentary, which includes doing interviews, sourcing archival footage, learning to shoot. I would love to continue to do that.”

Jacobs says she’s also gotten into science and mathematics over the last few years. “I have been able to interview astronauts, which is really cool. I did a whole documentary about a high school robotics competition, and it was fascinating."

The actress is “in awe” she’s been in so many hit projects throughout her career. She hopes five years from now she’ll still be acting and, perhaps, producing and directing as well. “I'm living moment to moment right now. I have a career that's pretty remarkable. I'm a lucky person.”

LUCKY GIRL: A NOVEL

In this coming-of-age story about a young Kenyan girl trying to find her own way in New York City, Irene Muchemi-Ndiritu’s tome follows the fictional Soila from her sheltered younger years in Nairobi to her time in the 1990s as a Black teen navigating school, relationships and her own identity.

SUMMER IN THE SPRINGS

The East Hampton enclave is a hidden gem

A charming and idyllic neighborhood located in the heart of East Hampton, Springs, is known and loved for its serene ambiance and natural beauty, offering a perfect blend of rural charm and upscale living. With its lush greenery, scenic waterways and stunning beaches, Springs has long been a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are also exquisite historic homes, art galleries and boutique shops that add to its unique charm. The famous Pollock-Krasner House where Jackson Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner kept a studio

and created their many iconic works is located in the hamlet. (The home is now a National Historic Landmark and open on select days to visitors.) Before shuttering last summer after 17 years, the Springs General Store acted as a community mainstay and served as a de facto clubhouse for residents and visitors alike. Whether strolling along the pristine beaches or exploring the vibrant local culture, Springs offers an enchanting escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

HOLLYWOOD IN THE HAMPTONS

There is no denying the natural beauty of the Hamptons: the picturesque beachside communities, rolling farmland and ocean views make for some of the country’s most stunning vistas. So, it’s no surprise that Hollywood has been using the East End as a backdrop for films—and their own backyards—for nearly a century.

Starting in the 1920s, the Hamptons became an appealing escape for actors, directors and producers seeking a respite from the bustling city life. The proximity to Manhattan made it the ideal destination for creative city dwellers to experience some relaxation and privacy thanks to the area's serene beaches, charming villages and expansive properties.

“Hamptons has always been a mecca for the titans of industry including Hollywood and finance, since the 1920s on,” Anne Chaisson, Executive Director of Hamptons International Film Festival tells GRAZIA Gazette: Hamptons. “As far as Hollywood, in the 1920s, New York City was such a hugely popular place for people to shoot films, so the Hamptons were a geographically desirable place for stars to spend time.”

Once the A-listers from the city started to come out East, many more followed. And some even started using the stunning beaches and farms, colonial homes and stately mansions as part of movie sets.

In 1913, the silent movie Hulda of Holland was filmed in Bridgehampton, featuring Mary Pickford, an A-lister of her era. Later came The Sheik, with Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky, much of it taking place at the Walking Dunes, an isolated section of sand in Napeague between Amagansett and Montauk, to evoke the

Sahara Desert.

Although it took place miles away in Long Island’s posh Sands Point, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby and its various film adaptations came to symbolize the high-flying, luxury lifestyle that the Hamptons have long been known for.

Of course, not every beloved film showed the glamorous side of things. The 1975 cult classic documentary Grey Gardens followed the private lives of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Little Edie, the aunt and cousin, respectively, of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The reclusive, once-upper crust women lived in poverty in a dilapidated mansion in the wealthy Georgica Pond area of East Hampton that was stabilized thanks to funds from Jackie and her sister Lee Radziwill to meet village codes. Typically, though, it was movies like Annie Hall, Something’s Gotta Give and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that showed audiences the natural beauty and charm of the storied region.

In more recent years, TV shows including Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, The Affair, Seinfeld and Girls all shot scenes out East depicting the party scene and extreme wealth of the area. Later came reality shows like The Real Housewives of New York and Summer House, showcasing the pampered lives of those who have a Hamptons home (or young 20-somethings that all rent one for the summer). However, while the movie industry was welcomed with open arms, these shows have not always been well-received. When the Summer House cast showed up out East in 2017, they were reportedly banned from various spots and was even denied a filming permit by East Hampton Town in its first year.

For nearly a century, the Hamptons have been inextricably linked to arts and entertainment. Casey Brennan explores the influence they have had on one another

Some argue that the influx of wealthy celebrities has led to gentrification and increased property prices, making it more difficult for local residents to afford homes in the area. There are also concerns about the preservation of the region's natural beauty and cultural heritage in the face of rapid development and commercialization.

But overall, the balance between the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and the low-key vibe of the locals has been mostly peaceful—and mutually beneficial.

The Hamptons have not only attracted Hollywood productions and its stars who enjoy the privacy and seclusion the area offers, but it’s also become a hub for industry-related events and initiatives too. Film festivals, such as the Hamptons International Film Festival, draw renowned filmmakers, actors and industry professionals to town.

“Our mission is to showcase independent voices from around the world and we are able to marry Hollywood and the independent film world,” Chaisson says. “At the very first festival, we had Martin Scorsese in conversation with Steven Spielberg, because they were both out here. We can reach all levels of the movie business.”

Chaisson proudly reveals that the HIFF can help amplify films that may not have gotten enough of a show previously. “We were first stop for Everything Everywhere All at Once—we gave Stephanie Hsu a Breakthrough Award and then fast forward, and we see [the cast] up there at the Oscars.” (The film went on to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay at the 2023 Academy Awards.)

The Hamptons have also been the preferred destination for industry professionals during the summer months. The region's social scene comes alive during this time, with numerous high-profile events, galas and parties. These gatherings attract a wide range of celebrities, creating opportunities for networking and establishing connections within the entertainment industry. Additionally, the Hamptons have hosted numerous charity galas and fundraisers supported by Hollywood figures, highlighting the philanthropic efforts of the entertainment industry.

“The proximity of Hollywood to the Hamptons is really due to all of these people living out here, and celebrities willing to help and support as best of they can,” says Chaisson. “Once, Hugh Jackman had one day

JAWS Even though Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic Jaws was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard, the story was actually set in the Hamptons. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND Fans of the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will remember the memorable Montauk scene when stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet lay in a bed on the snowy beach. SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE Nancy Meyers’s 2003 romantic comedy Something’s Gotta Give starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicolson was filmed in a gorgeous mansion in the Hamptons, which sold in 2014 for a whopping $41 million. THE GREAT GATSBY F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved 1925 novel The Great Gatsby (which was turned into two movies in 1974 and 2013) enthralled readers with tales of hard-partying Long Island millionaires in the fictional town of East Egg, which was inspired by Hamptons soirées the author attended. Ed Harris’ 2000 film on the late American painter Jackson Pollock was appropriately filmed at the artist's home and studio in Springs, East Hampton. off from a Broadway show he was doing, and he came out for the day to do an event.”

The reach of the Hamptons even extended into other arts, including theater, dance and painting—much in thanks to a benefactor living out East.

“An East Hampton resident named Mary Woodhouse had a beautiful barn that she turned into a theater,” explains Chaisson. “She brought people out from Broadway and The Met and really started that migration of the industry. Word spread and next thing you know there is a connection between both coasts and out East. Everyone wanted a spot out here.”

In 1930, Woodhouse, a philanthropist and lover of the arts, anonymously dedicated land and an initial financial gift toward building one of the country’s first interdisciplinary centers: Guild Hall. Her vision was “to heighten the importance of the arts” and provide a building that would “serve as meeting place.” The community rallied to secure additional funding, as well as manage and oversee the development and maintenance of a new facility.

In August 1931, Guild Hall opened, boasting a jewel-box proscenium theater and fine art galleries. The much-loved institution has been a cultural cornerstone of the Hamptons ever since.

The world-class artistry presented at Guild Hall is uncommon for a small town. Artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Roy Lichtenstein, Jane Freilicher, Willem de Kooning and Larry Rivers, among many others, were early exhibitors in the galleries.

Edward Albee, Bob Fosse, Olivia de Havilland, Jerome Robbins, Tennessee Williams, Kurt Vonnegut and Thornton Wilder were just a few of the accomplished talents to have worked in the John Drew Theater. The Fantasticks became one of Broadway’s most successful shows following a run at Guild Hall, and Nora Ephron and her sister, Delia Ephron, debuted the play Love, Loss, and What I Wore at Guild Hall before it premiered as an Off-Broadway production.

“Guild Hall couldn’t have happened just anywhere. It needed the kind of land and seascapes that could seduce artists,” Enez Whipple, Guild Hall Executive Director from 1943–1991, has said. “It needed a city like New York nearby to nourish it; and, most of all, it needed the dedicated people who make the exemplary cultural center it is today.”

Modern Oasis

PARADISE FOUND

Guests at Nayara Bocas del Toro go off the grid and connect to the world around them

While Costa Rica, with its pristine rainforest and beaches, takes center stage as a coveted Central America vacation destination, its underappreciated, uncrowded neighbor to the south, Panama, is positioned to steal the spotlight—and with good reason. The beautiful country on the isthmus linking North and South America enjoys a prime location between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, just a short plane ride away from the United States (Copa Airlines offers direct flights from several cities).

On a recent afternoon, I took a 50-minute flight from Panama City to Bocas del Toro Town on the southern tip of Isla Colón. Locals and visitors were already dining at candy-colored restaurants and whooping it up in waterside bars to celebrate what’s locally known as “filthy Friday.” The vibe was relaxed yet lively—but I was looking to disconnect completely and discover bliss of a purer nature. I was greeted with a glass of bubbly at my water taxi and climbed in for the short 20-minute ride to a destination that felt a world away: Nayara Bocas del Toro. The private nine-acre island paradise is dotted with several elaborate towering treehouse accommodations. My home, however, was one of 18 overwater villas flanked by native mangroves arching their roots into the tepid Caribbean Sea. I couldn’t wait to join them.

Life here, naturally, revolves around the water. A day is well spent exploring the island setting aboard a kayak while frigatebirds circle and play in the thermal updrafts overhead. My snorkeling adventure off nearby Bastimentos Island included a pit stop in the shallows of a small mangrove island in an area that my guide referred to as Hollywood. The reason? Rather than celebrities, orange starfish lounge beneath the sparkling surf, an underwater Walk of Fame lining the sandy seafloor. In such a relaxed aquatic environment, it didn’t come as a

surprise when one barefooted guest showed up to dinner that night in a wet bathing suit. “You’re not going to get judged here,” Nayara Bocas del Toro Founder Dan Behm reassures me. “We strive for casual elegance.”

This part of Panama still has the feel of a new frontier, and Behm is working hard to make sure it stays that way. While guests’ comfort is key, the two-year-old property is equally focused on preserving what makes this area so special. Behm understands both the urgency of sustainability and the economic importance of ensuring others like me that they can continue to experience the area as it should be—unspoiled. That’s why Nayara Bocas del Toro is working with Caribbean Coral Restoration to regrow critically endangered coral around the island, including on artificial reefs that can be viewed through windows set into villa floors. “We built on this island because of the crystal-clear water and the coral reefs,” Behm says. “If we lose that, we’ve lost.”

On my final night, I enjoyed a sunset cruise through Dolphin Bay with my fellow intrepid explorers: pods of dolphins returning from a day spent in the surrounding sea. As my boat glided past a pair of the playful mammals slicing through the water, I took in the distant hazy purple rainforest beneath a sherbet-orange sky aglow from the setting sun. I had mere hours left to enjoy these dreamy surroundings. “Our goal is to have this be the best experience of our guests’ lifetimes and something they’ll always cherish,” Behm says of Nayara Bocas del Toro. He adds that a success for him is when those who visit here cry when they have to go, as they often do.

There were no tears in my eyes when I hopped aboard the boat to head back home, but I felt better off—for there was a big smile on my face.

The new Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo transformed the former Union Club in Panama City into a chic waterfront getaway

Sofitel Legend properties are known for creating luxe environments in historic spaces and earlier this year, the brand expanded its offering with the new Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo in Panama City. The hotel—an UNESCO World Heritage site on the edge of the historic district Casco Viejo—was once the Club Union of Panama, a destination visited by Albert Einstein, Queen Elizabeth II and other boldface names. The property sat empty for 30 years before Panamanian architect Manuel Choy revamped the sprawling space into a 5-star getaway—only the original French colonial façade remains. The décor's nautical touches, like navigation instruments and a large mural in the lobby, are a nod to the area's most famous marvel, the Panama Canal.

The hotel’s location on the Pacific Ocean translates to some of the best waterfront views of the city and the soaring skyscrapers in the financial district. Stellar service and luxe amenities await guests thanks to meals by Michelin-starred chef Lorenzo Di Gravio at the Mediterranean brasserie, Caleta. Treatments are offered at the spa or for an even more luxurious pampering experience, Sofitel butlers (called majordomes) can draw an in-room bath with specially scented salts and oils. Staying true to Sofitel Legend roots while bringing resort-level relaxation, a truly rejuvenating stay awaits.

Night at the Museum

Walking through the doors of Hotel La Compañía in Panama City’s colorful Casco Antiguo neighborhood is like stepping into a history book. “The Hotel La Compañía is more a destination than a hotel,” General Manager Fidel Reyes explains of the sprawling property that took nine years to complete and just opened last year. Known as the “Living Museum,” the hotel takes up a full city block and is divided into three sections that reflect the area’s multicultural roots: the American wing played host to the American Bazaar clothing store in the early

20th century, the French wing housed Central America’s first university in the mid-1700s, while the Spanish wing was a convent in the 1600s. Even the gnarled avocado tree in the hotel’s expansive central courtyard dates back 150 years. A tour of the hotel’s gorgeous inner spaces reveals even more thoughtful historical touches, including framed Panama Canal documents, a vintage photo exhibition and massive marble reliefs showcasing buccaneer Sir Henry Morgan and explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa. -AR
