ABOUT ME

I AM EMIEL

I AM A DESIGNER

MY WORK IS MY PASSION

I AM ACTIVE

I was born in Amsterdam and I studied at the University of Technology in Delft. I have finished the bachelor of Industrial Design Engineering and did an Entrepreneurial minor in my third year. I completed the master Integrated Product Design and I am looking forward to start working at a design related company.

I have learned to design from a company´s vision to a detailed elaborated product. Integrating all aspects in product design, from strategic point of view until the market introduction. I start my projects well structured and by systematically making use of methodologies I work my way to the final detailed product, ready for production.

I have been teaching children and adults to surf for eight years and I still love to share the experiences and skills I have learned in surfing.

Surfing has been my passion since I was young and traveling is my way to discover the world while searching for new experiences in cultures and nature.

I would love to combine my passion and my work in the future.

I started as a gymnast when I was 6 years old and competed in the national team from my 12th being 13th at the European championships of 2007.

WHAT I DO

I CAN SKETCH

I CAN ILLUSTRATE

I CAN MODEL 3D

I CAN RENDER 3D

I CAN PHOTOSHOP

I CAN PROTOTYPE

During my study I have learned to show my idea’s and concepts by sketching. Drawing techniques provide me to make quick 3D illustrations including material use, texture and user interactions.

To show my thoughts I use Illustrator to create clear visuals of concept idea´s and user interaction. This tool is mostly used during idea generation and concept design.

For a detailed elaboration of a product design several 3D programs are used. Quick adjustments can be made in this 3D model to refine the perfect final design. Product simulations can be done for optimization of product properties and features. Technical drawings can be made for manufacturing and productuction details.

Another feature of this 3D modeling programs is rendering the product in its final appearance. These 3D images can be used for presentation. Also short movies can be made for product functions and productuser interaction.

With Photoshop I can create any context and user interactions to a product. Products can be easily adjusted and pictures can be optimized for presentation.

Prototyping is always used to test a certain element of the product, weather it is its function or its apearance. This detailed elaboration is time consuming but really valuable to convince a client.

MY QUALITIES

I AM DISCIPLINED

I AM CREATIVE

I AM STRUCTURED

I AM DEDICATED

Gymnastics is a sport which requiers a lot of discipline. Training 6 days a week 4 hours a day have leared me to be determined and persistant in everything I do. Training to perfection and daily routine have thought me to be a perfectionist.

Since a young age I have been creative in sketching and painting art. Later on this led to other hobby´s as building my own skateboard and making a wall clock using a laser cutting technique.

Working on a design project requires a structured, planned and organized approach. I learned to make use of methodologies to create clearance and guidance throughout a project.

The start of a project is a goal, a target to achieve. During the past I have learned to be determind to meet acertain goal.

Daily training from a young age have made me healthy, both physical and mental. Being active gives me energy.

The methodologies I have learned during my study are tools I can use to decompose and solve complex problems. In this way I am able to solve any assignment or design problem I come across.

At the age of 18 I qualified for the European Championships in Greece. A reward for a long journey of training and preperation. This experience learned me to be able to achieve high aims with the right amount of commitment and perseverance.

HOW I WORK Design brief or problem

Establishing the goal

Specify target group and context

Idea generation and concept phase

Detailed elaboration

Market implementation

All of my project starts with an assigment or a problem of a company. I use methods to gain a clear vision on the design problem and I make a structured project approach.

A clear project goal needs to be established as a guideline for the entire process. Specific sub-goals can be set to achieve certain targets for the main goal. All decisions and methods used should align this main project goal.

Two important aspects in product design are the specific target group, and the context to design for. I use research methods to analyze the user and its usage, the market, developments, direct competitors etc.

During this phase I start to generate idea’s and concepts using the appropriate method to get the most valuable results. In this phase it is important to collaborate with users and the client for a suitable and feasable final concept.

I work out the final concept into a detailed 3D model where all parts and assemblies are designed. The product is now ready for production. This model can be easily adjusted and used for presentation.

During the project I work to a feasible end result which expresses the vision of the company. Price and feasability are two aspects I take in mind for a successful market introduction.

WAVE BENCH INTERNSHIP PROJECT AT STREETLIFE During a six months internship I have been working on a furniture project for Streetlife. The goal of the project was to integrate the dynamics of water into a new street furniture design. The product should fit to the company’s materials as well as their product portfolio. The company is specialized in products with straight hardwood beams combined with rusty steel. Current product, and my starting point, is this:

I started my approach of the project with natures most dynamic phenomenon; the sea. A rough sea consists out of waves created by storms. These waves were my inspiration for product idea’s and sketches which resulted in a succesfull final design. The product is now added to the companies product portfolio.

The inspiration of the wave is translated into the design as following; first is concducted how they build up, how they break and how the energy is moving.

These aspects are integrated in the shape of the street bench. This resulted in a dynamic shaped, wave formed bench with a wide variety of seating positions, creating a flexible and dynamic street furniture design.

THE PERFECT FIT A DESIGN PROCESS OPTIMALISATION - GRADUATION PROJECT AT MYSTIC In this graduation project I helped the company to understand the complexity of wetsuit design and give them control over the wetsuit design by adjusting simple parameters, the body dimensions. This new design process will help the company to optimize their wetsuit and create a more valuable product for their customers, a wetsuit with a perfect fit.

Wetsuits are designed to keep the user warm in cold environments. A functional requirement is that they have a good fit to the user his body. Due to the wide variety among customers it is hard for wetsuit companies to find the perfect fit for a certain target group. The complexity of the design problem is thoroughly analyzed and has led to a whole new design process for the company, showed at the left.

This new process consists out of several design tools which the company can easily use to create a perfect fitting wetsuit for a specific target group. As input for these tools the wetsuit dimensions are analyzed and redesigned using different methods and technologies such as a product- and target group analysis, 3D-scanning and material stretch analysis.

The wetsuit pattern, which the supplier uses for manufacturing, can be created by entering customer input, 17 different body dimensions in an Excel sheet. This Excel sheet is communicating with design software to adjust the flat parametric pattern. The company is able to generate a pattern which can be used for design optimization, target market approach or even personal customized wetsuits.

A NEW STORE CONCEPT INTERIOR REDESIGN - JOINT MASTER PROJECT FOR SUITSUPPLY Suitsupply had a problem with their interrior design as the stock may vary and the kind of products change over time. Styles are rapidly following up eachother and the brand want to show customer the quality of their products.

by focussing on flexibility of space and enrichment of shopping experience where every kind of shopper could find their way in the store. The design should suit the dynamic environments at all Suitsupply stores.

The challenge of the project was to redesign the current retail concept

his way to a inpriring and successful shopping journey. A new store lay-out is created for a new Suitsupply store in Manhattan. Floor maps and routing are designed to fullfil consumer needs. In collaboration with the company several concepts are developed which could be implemented in the

new store design. One design is elaborated into a functional prototype to test the new shopping experience in-store with real costumers.

KAYAK FOR CHILDREN EMBODIMENT DESIGN: FROM IDEA TO WORKING PRODUCT The assignment of the company was to design a user friendly kayak for children in the age of six to twelve. In-depth user tests, market research, user analysis, material and production research have been the main focus of the project. This multi-disciplinairy project has been performed by six students working on seperate tasks and together as a design team.

The challenge of this project was the complexity and the broad scope of this design. Several factors are defining a certain decision, which makes it an integrated design process where all choices are influencing each other.

The project was for a client who was actually planning to start a business so price and feasability where two important criteria. Multiple feedback sessions with the client were needed in order to design a suitable product for his business.

The final result was a full functioning model as the product should finally look like. Suppliers, manufacturers, production costs, and business scenario’s are worked out to give the client a realistic product proposal and advice for investments and future research.

USER TESTS

One of the major challenges was to design a stable kayak. Form and user dimensions were optimalized for the right stability.

The strength of the materials were analyzed using calculation software for a reliable product usage.

The user interaction ideation was the start of the functionalities of the kayak. This were determining criteria to design with.

The kayak has been elaborated into the smallest detail, ready for production. Also an assembly and costs analysis is done for manufacturing.

A test kayak is designed to research user dimension, user preferences on form, stability and functions of the new kayak.

Several user tests have been conducted to verify all design choices made during this high complex development process.

COMPOSITE FURNITURE BACHELOR THESIS: FROM MATERIAL TO MARKET OPPORTUNITY This project started with a new developed composite material with unique transparent lighting possibilities. The goal was to design a product in a new market segment for the company where the material should be the unique selling point. The properties of this new material were strengtness and lightness but still translucent, a unique combination.

During the ideation phase I tried to solve the problem of being unconfident at night at the streets, which is a major problem in dark parcs, bouleveards, city squares and streets. By placing enlightened benches in the street sceneries at night, a more clear and pleasant environment is created which should attracht people to be outside.

MODULAR LAYOUT

LIGHTING

DIVERSITY

The arrangement of this product will vary along locations. An appropriate layout can be created for every destination.

LED bars are placed inside the edges of the seats to enlighted the product at night.

This design can suit anywhere a rest area is needed. The diversity of modular products will fit to the desires of the location.

USER CENTERED DESIGN

LIGHTING DESIGN

This dinner product is designed with the use of a product intercation vision. The product can be places on the dinner table to display food. The center of the product can be lit and keeps the food warm. The plate can be taken off after dinner and the center part functions as a small fireplace on the table for cozy after dinner conversations.

The fire burns on bio ethanol which is more user friendly than wood, oil or gas and it will not smoke or soot.

A desk lamp is constructed out of wooden multiplex parts. The design of an antique lamp is converted into a modern design by using its shape and changing the material into wood. The combination of the material and shapes results in an modern and warm light effect.

Light reflects in the inner construction and will illuminate the upper and lower surfaces.

PHILIPS LIGHT UP

HEMA BOOK

IMPROVING OFFICE COMFORT

DESIGN COMPETITION

During this five months project for Philips Research & Development I worked on this office furniture to increase comfort and productvity. Comfort at the office is a growing issue in our society. A productive and comfortable working environment depends strongly on user preferences. This product makes it possible to create and adjust your own preferred comfort zone with personalized lighting and acoustic comfort.

This product is integrated with a smart system using several sensors to optimize the working environment and save power as well. A motion sensor detects the presence of a user, otherwise it will turn off the lighting to save energy. A lighting sensor detects the amount of light on the desk and will adapt to the preferred setting, when outside light sources fluctuate due to sunshine or darkness. Increase comfort and productivity while saving energy and money.

This product is designed for the HEMA competition in 2011. An interactive book for children in the age of four to six to learn about colors. Every page displays another color with a corresponding colored element to learn about the the environment. A small poem describes the story on every page.

Different techniques as 3D folding elements, puzzle parts, transparent overlays, moving elements and half cutted pages are used to interact with the reader to create interest and having fun while reading.

I USE sw PHOTOSHOP ILLUSTRATOR
