Salam Sehati Sejiwa. Unique to Malaysia, we celebrate our national day twice within a year – 31st August and 16th September. The former is independence day while the latter is Malaysia day – the day to remind us when the federation of Malaysia was formed. This year’s national day celebration theme is “Sehati Sejiwa”, in English it means – one heart and one soul. The reason for singling out the 2015 national day celebration theme in this edition of 50 Best Malaysian Titles for International Rights 2015 is that if we ever want our book industry to prosper, all the players in the industry will have to work collectively as a single entity. Figuratively speaking, we will have to work together with one heart and soul especially where international rights trading is concerned. The domestic book retail industry has been very active over the past few years and growing, though not at the desired rate. The domestic retail market value stands at RM26 billion – not a lucrative amount if the industry is to contribute towards making Malaysia a high income developed nation by 2020. In this respect, the industry has no choice but to be more actively involved in international rights trading. Meanwhile, on the domestic front, the industry has to be more productive and expand its market boundary to include the new breed of readers – the Y-Generation. Malaysia is a land of cultural diversity, rich in some of the world’s most interesting heritage treasures. These are invaluable assets to Malaysia. However, it is up to the greatest asset that any nation could have, that would be her people, to document creatively the treasures that a nation possesses, and hence turning the assets into sustainable income generators for the country. The 50 Best Malaysian Titles for International Rights 2015 features a mere tip of the iceberg of the literary works Malaysia has to offer, but sufficient enough to reflect the content quality and diversity. The politics of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysia. Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence generate a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis and later in the post 2008 General Election), the project of nation-building remains a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. The book explores the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or ‘a united Malaysian nation’ enshrined in Mahathir’s Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991.
