MESSAGE

Salam Sehati Sejiwa. Unique to Malaysia, we celebrate our national day twice within a year – 31st August and 16th September. The former is independence day while the latter is Malaysia day – the day to remind us when the federation of Malaysia was formed. This year’s national day celebration theme is “Sehati Sejiwa”, in English it means – one heart and one soul. The reason for singling out the 2015 national day celebration theme in this edition of 50 Best Malaysian Titles for International Rights 2015 is that if we ever want our book industry to prosper, all the players in the industry will have to work collectively as a single entity. Figuratively speaking, we will have to work together with one heart and soul especially where international rights trading is concerned. The domestic book retail industry has been very active over the past few years and growing, though not at the desired rate. The domestic retail market value stands at RM26 billion – not a lucrative amount if the industry is to contribute towards making Malaysia a high income developed nation by 2020. In this respect, the industry has no choice but to be more actively involved in international rights trading. Meanwhile, on the domestic front, the industry has to be more productive and expand its market boundary to include the new breed of readers – the Y-Generation. Malaysia is a land of cultural diversity, rich in some of the world’s most interesting heritage treasures. These are invaluable assets to Malaysia. However, it is up to the greatest asset that any nation could have, that would be her people, to document creatively the treasures that a nation possesses, and hence turning the assets into sustainable income generators for the country. The 50 Best Malaysian Titles for International Rights 2015 features a mere tip of the iceberg of the literary works Malaysia has to offer, but sufficient enough to reflect the content quality and diversity. The National Book Council of Malaysia is committed to promoting all Malaysian works of quality. We dare say that, “Anything worth trading, it’s Malaysian works!”

Abd. Wahab Ibrahim Director of the Permanent Secretariat for the National Book Council of Malaysia Ministry of Education Malaysia

Rumah is a collection of old Riau-Malay rhymed sayings originally gathered and published by Tenas Effendy. Referred to in Malay literature as ‘Ungkapan’, these eloquent stanzas depict the Malay house as a metaphor for the passage of life, the responsibilities of parenthood, the social observances of communal living, and the obligations of existing harmoniously with nature. Together, they form a complex work that vividly illustrates the values of customary law, etiquette, cultural protocols and religious tenets as cherished within a Malay home. The sayings themselves beautifully capture and radiate the warmth of a graceful Malay kampong house in tropical setting.

This collection of 250 pantun consists almost entirely of traditional Malay poetry, that is, poetry without an author that was produced in the past, with the exception of one or two of them. Pantun represents a storehouse of poetry, as poetry is universal while at the same time it is a reflection of Malay poetry. The pantun is divided into two parts, namely the pembayang and the maksud. The pembayang connotes the context, background or certain objectives that are usually implied. The maksud usually ‘translates’ the connotations that cannot be explained by the pembayang, in addition to conveying the message clearly.

However, the union of different elements, both man-made and natural – the rubbish dump, effluent ponds, intermittent semi-submerged skeletal trees, a mangrove estuary – somehow works in harmony to attract a number of bird species to such a small area. Famously known to avid bird watchers as the Pulau Burung Landfill Site, this semi-aerobic landfill is located in the Byram mangrove forest. Byram mangrove forest is part and parcel of this unique ecosystem.

RETHINKING THE MOSQUE IN THE MODERN MUSLIM SOCIETY author

The mosque is the most important building in Islam. In the early days of Islam the statement was true in every aspect of the Islamic culture but in the present day it is true only in the sense that the mosque is an architectural symbol that caters for the religious rites of the Muslim society. There are two main problems related to the planning and design of mosque. First, the present design guidelines used for this purpose are valid only for traditional society of the past. Second, the clients and architects of mosque at the present time subscribe to the idea that the mosque is a sanctuary or a piece of religious architecture as defined by modern historians of the West. Therefore, this book is an attempt towards providing a solution to the question about the design of mosque to meet the needs of the present Sunni Muslim society.

Nation-Building in a Multiethnic Society MohaMed Mustafa Ishak

I am sure the book with its academic inputs and extensive research will provide readers a better insight and understanding of what the Bangsa Malaysia is all about, its concept and its objectives…We can hope, dream and even pray for it.…

The Politics of

The politics of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysia. Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence generate a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis and later in the post 2008 General Election), the project of nation-building remains a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. The book explores the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or ‘a united Malaysian nation’ enshrined in Mahathir’s Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991. It discusses the underlying sociopolitical parameters that shape and influence the politics of nation-building in the country and the construction of Bangsa Malaysia. As such, the book provides an alternative perspective in the analysis of ethnic relations and nationbuilding in Malaysia, thus broadens the understanding of Malaysian politics and society.
