EMILEE MARIE OLSON

ABOUT ME I believe in creating environments that make the lives of everyone more beautiful, functional, and enhance the lives of the people that occupy those spaces. I am truly passionate and excited by good design. Design has tremendous possibilities, and can help benefit society in so many different ways. As a designer, I strive to approach each project with a unique perspective and an open mind - no two projects are alike. I find that the most successful interiors are achieved when design is well thought out, detailed, and creates a memorable or impacting experience. The details are essential, but its the memories created from the details that create the biggest impact on people and their experiences in whatever space they are in.

LACROSSE ROCK HOUSES This project was done in collaboration with the Rural Communities Design Initiative (RCDI) to help the rural community of LaCrosse, Washington create new and exciting design ideas to re-purpose their historic basalt rock houses. Many community workshops were held to gain insight into the interests of the local community, as well as develop ideas based upon their opinions and ideas of what should be done with the rock houses. It was determined that the houses should be multi-functional and promote local businesses. It was determined that the old houses should be transformed into LaCrosse’s new Agricultural Education Center, Farmers Market, and Community Garden. This new proposed design would help bring the community together, provide learning experiences, and also help small businesses. The old rock houses will be turned into something new for the entire community to benefit and grow from for years to come.

Brand Design

F R E I TA G R E TA I L EXPERIENCE P L AT F O R M Focusing on the brand and its most basic components, this part of the overall project was the essential first step in the flagship store’s design development process. Cognitive maps, sketching, and brand research was a part of this process to really understand the brand, its customers, and its products. Final delieverables included visual positions, customer descriptions, product and brand analysis, as well as key design considerations, which in turn helped guide the development of the atmosphere and experience of the new store’s design.

F R E I TA G R E TA I L EXPERIENCE POP UP This project’s main purpose was to design a deployable pop up retail experience. The pop up retail experience needed to be easily transportable and withstand the elements. This deployable retail experience will travel across the country on a semi-truck and park in local parks, downtown, or even on the beach. This pop up will create excitement for the brand and allow visitors to experience the brand all at the same time. The Pop Up is divided into two sections, a lounge and bar. Between the two sides, stacking platforms will create flexible seating areas and display for FREITAG products. Decorative walls made of truck tarps add color and visual interest to both spaces. Visitors will also have areas to take pictures to post on social media, further creating excitement and buzz for the brand.

F R E I TA G FLAGSHIP STORE The purpose of this project was to design FREITAG’s new flagship retail store in downtown LA. Designing the 5,000 square foot building proved to be a challenge because FREITAG has such a limited amount of product. To fill the space and enhance the customer experience, a lounge and bar were added. Guided by the concept of the Urban Oasis + Outfitter, the new flagship store is designed to create an atmosphere that is green, simple, engaging, and inviting. The store will be a place where customers can gather, discover, and experience what makes the FREITAG brand and lifestyle truly unique and innovative.

D E LT A G A M M A REMODEL The purpose of this project was to design the formal living room and small sitting room in the Delta Gamma chapter house at Washington State University. Working with other designers, we focused on creating a bright and more welcoming space that the collegiate sorority women would love to be in. The main challenge of this project was bringing in plenty of natural light, which the space lacked due to a large partition in the middle of the room. Along with bringing in plenty of light, choosing durable materials and furniture that would withstand daily use was also important. We chose a more contemporary color palette of teals, yellows, and greens to reflect the interests of the women in the chapter and to add brightness to the spaces. The new spaces should reflect the atmosphere of a relaxed, yet stylish, living space that the women requested their new space.

PHI MU REMODEL The purpose of this project was to design the entryway, formal living room, dining room, and TV room for the Phi Mu chapter at the University of Washington. Working with two other designers on a design team, we focused on designing the ultimate “home-away-from-home” for 90 collegiate sorority women. The main challenge of this project was making sure that every design decision from the materials to the furniture was durable and functional, but did not sacrifice style or comfort. We also chose pink, blush, and fuchsia color palettes to pay tribute to the sorority’s colors. These colors were used throughout the 4 spaces and designed to mix seamlessly without clashing. The new spaces should reflect the atmosphere of casual, contemporary, and elegant glamour.
