La pregunta de sus ojos
“La pregunta de sus ojos” comes from a fascination for “acheropoietic” images, icons that are believed to have appeared miraculously, not painted by anyone but directly imprinted: ideally, sort of anticipation of photography before its invention. This work is based upon the legend of Nuestra Signora de Guadalupe, in particulary on its eyes, where there are impressed two small glows. Throughout the 20th century a lot of pseudoscientific studies were conducted, but only thanks to the latest technology it is possible to enlarge the eyes of the painting. It is believed to recognize in them the presence of different human figures, like the crowd of indios the witnessed of the apparition. Eyes enlargements were processed with the help of a 3D software, that generated two surfaces remembering ancestral landscapes of water and ice. In order to have the tridimensional analogon of the scene reflected in her eyes, the result is not an image of reality: two peculiar objects came out from the mysterious icon, and further landscape from the concrete prints. This is how two technological sculptures came to the world, cast of a supernatural event, using the automation of a software as a revealing agent.
The work, using a scientific method to deal with an emotional and spiritual dimension, creates another kind of miracle, the technological one. Science, magic and religion are mixed all together to create a totally unexpected and ambivalent result. In modern society, each aspect of human life is subjected to scientific analysis, the spiritual sphere is just banished as irrational; on the otherhand art makes possible to bring together the opposites with no trauma or collisions, materializing
Sive mas sive foemina
Sive mas sive foemina, Church of the Saints Fermo and Rustico, Martinengo (BG). Iron sculpture. The discovery of a Roman marble base dedicated to the Minerva, attests that what is now a church was once a pagan temple; “Whether male or female” it was the expression that accompanied the invocation to the spirit of the place, since its genre was not known. ‘‘Sive mas sive foemina’’, it is the skeleton of that basement, emptied and visible only in its contours, integrated with material collected on the site, to symbolically reconcile Martinengo’s past and present.
