When Will I Be F.A.M.E.ous? The Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence (F.A.M.E.) Team is a prestigious program dedicated to educating and growing the most talented young hairdressers in the Australian industry to an international standard.
And as we know, the team at é SALON are definitely a talented young bunch, and this was further endorsed when two of our very own apprentices were announced as members of the 2009/2010 F.A.M.E Team! In October, Leah White & Lisa Muscat were given an opportunity that many young hairdressers can only dream about! Their inclusion on the 2009 F.A.M.E team meant that in addition to creating a photographic collection under the guidance of renowned photographer Andrew O’Toole, they were given the chance to present live on the Australian F.A.M.E Team tour, and at Salon International in London! The announcement was made at the 2009 Hair Expo in Sydney, where both Leah & Lisa had presented a model on stage to be judged on hair, stage presentation, and live performance, before going into an interview process with the judges.
Leah White seen first hand the “ I’ve wealth of experience
stylists have gained from being on the F.A.M.E. Team, and how it really boosts your confidence as a person, a stylist, and as an on-stage presenter. To be included in the 2009 F.A.M.E Team is the ideal opportunity for me to explore, learn, have fun and pushing my personal goals and expectations to the limit.

The hair and fashion world in London is incredible; the one ultimate thing I was pleased to see was that Australian stylists really are right up there when it comes to what’s hot in hair. In between finding models for our 5 shows at Salon International on the street, our photo shoot with Akin Konizi, the current British Hairdresser of the Year, and a one-day demonstration at Vidal Sassoon, and we did our best to sleep, sightsee and take in the incredibly fast London lifestyle! The highlight of my trip was my photo shoot with Akin Konizi. I was very lucky to have serious oneon-one mentoring with him, and I now know what the difference is between someone who is an incredible hairdresser, and someone who is a master of their art. It was so beneficial to me to not only learn what works on a shoot and how to get that WOW factor, but also to learn what doesn’t. It’s invaluable information that I will never forget and will apply to every shoot in the future.
FAME Team 2010 After a busy end to the year for Leah & Lisa, their F.A.M.E Team commitments resume in 2010 when they continue to be a part of the “Ignite the Passion” tour around regional Australia. “Being a part of the FAME Team on tour means we are working with teachers and students who are studying hairdressing,” says Leah. “We can see that, along with our sponsors, we are contributing to creating a better future for education within the hairdressing industry, and helping to inspire Australia’s youth create a dynamic industry!”
Lisa’s London Life is made up of so many great experiences that involve a lot of work. But as long as you can walk away with a wealth of information, it will be an experience you will never forget!

Going to London with the Australian FAME Team was a trip of incredible opportunities, from presenting 5 shows onstage at Salon International, meeting and working with some of my idols and watching Vidal Sassoon unravel the secrets of their latest collection! It was so beneficial for me as a hairdresser to be given the opportunity to work with Akin Konizi, especially being exposed to his thought processes behind his photo shoots. Working with Akin and his colourist, Cristel Lundqvist, helped me to expand my creativity and knowledge of shapes and techniques, as well as the beauty behind clean colours in shades that you could only imagine!

Displaced
By – Marc Mendicino 2009 Australian Hair & Fashion Awards Men’s Hairdresser of the Year
Displaced captures the moment in a man or boy’s life where he finds himself detached from society. His entire look from the carefully styled hair to the carefully selected fashion isn’t the norm; it’s somewhat displaced. Inspired by the current and ensuing trends from men’s catwalk hair & fashion, men’s fashion magazines and men’s hair magazines, Displaced maintains a strong shape and feeling throughout each look. The societal detachment or displacement is further enhanced with hair that is individual whilst remaining wearable, masculine & technically strong, combining street-cool with sophistication.

Let’s Hear It for the Boy{s}!
this collection was “ Creating a truly enjoyable experience
and this win makes it even more enjoyable. It’s amazing to know it was judged the winner in such a strong competition by 6 of the best hairdressers in the UK, and this has really boosted my confidence in what I do. Marc Mendicinio
”
In his own words, our Style & Training Director, Marc Mendicino, specializes in cutting and styling but doesn’t necessarily favor one gender over the other.
With the announcement of Marc as the Winner of the 2009 Australian Hair Fashion Awards Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, it’s clear his talents for cutting & styling men’s hair are definitely outstanding! Marc’s winning collection, Displaced, presents styles that are individual whilst remainingwearable, masculine & technically strong, combining street-cool with sophistication. Can any bloke wear these awardwinning styles or are they purely for the photo studio or catwalk? “I definitely feel this is a collection that can be translated to our clients and every day wear whether directly done or with minor changes to suit a person’s individual lifestyle and needs. My favourite would have to be the look I call ‘Dean’. I love the combination of that classic barbering technique through the sides with the exaggerated length on top. I also love the versatility of the look; you can where it up, down or even tightly slicked back. I feel its something that can be easily translated to our clients.” So begs the question, if Marc had the choice, which male celebrity’s hair would he like to get his hands on? “Definitely David Beckham. I love his fashion sense and his hair always looks cool. Even when its completely shaved off. But I can also see Eric Bana with the look I called ‘Square’. He’s quite a masculine man

é Quarterly / Issue One / December 09
with a strong jaw-line and strong features, so I think giving him a strong, short haircut would really work well and enhance these features. And what products would the average guy need in his bathroom cabinet to re-create any of the Displaced looks? I used all TIGI products on the day of my shoot. The wet look was created with the ‘Power Play’ gel. If I needed to create texture I used a combination of the ‘Hard To Get’ cream and ‘Matte Paste’. If I needed to smooth the hair out I used the ‘Smoothing Lusteriser’ cream. Finally if I needed a little extra hold I would finish the looks with the ‘Hard Head’ hairspray.
Marc Meets Kerri-Anne We saw you on Mornings with KerriAnne and were wondering what it was like to be included in this segment? Did you think your award win would see you on TV? The Mornings with Kerri-Anne show was a fantastic experience. I’d never done anything like it before and it all happened pretty fast. My self and the other winners had 2 hours to prepare our model, but the segment itself was all over in 5-10min. I never expected anything after winning the award, especially not a segment on a national TV show. I’ve just tried to make the most of any opportunities that have come my way and not take them for granted. Tell us a little more about the experiences you have had since arriving at é SALON (shows, awards etc) I’ve been with the é SALON team a little more than a year now, and a lot has happened in a very short time. The biggest highlight was definitely winning Australian Men’s Hairdresser of the Year. I was also one of 10 finalists to be named in this years F.A.M.E Team competition and the most recent accolade though was being named a finalist in the international AIPP awards for Best Men’s Collection. I also had the opportunity to work backstage at Fashion Week, the Myer Spring/Summer launch, the ARIA Awards and the Whitehouse School of Design annual fashion parade. On top of all that I’ve presented on stage at Hair Expo as well as working alongside some of our industry’s best in Caterina Di Biase, Brad Ngata, Damien Rinaldo, Angelo Seminara and Alan White. Most recently I had the opportunity to teach my very first educational course in conjunction with one or our product companies, which was both challenging and very rewarding. Everyone has their own goals, dreams, and aspirations when it comes to their career -what are some of yours? I definitely want to continue to improve my photographic work albeit for competitions or to build my portfolio. Salon ownership has always been a goal since beginning my career and I want to continue to put the steps in place and learn as much as I can for that to happen. Being the é SALON’s Educational Director, along with Emiliano I want to improve the salon’s assistant training program, and see our juniors grow into successful hairdressers.

SEASONAL TRENDS
Short Hair Styling The shaggy bob is back this summer, though it isn’t pin straight rather it’s a wavy, curly or just roughed up lived in interpretation of the classic bob. Alternatively for shorter hair it is grown out but still cropped. Think Natalie Imbruglia short.
BLONDES With blondes aim for fine to medium highlights, using colours that compliment each other, depending on whether you want more of a golden blonde or cooler blonde. Keep it natural and soft looking but work with your skin tones
Spring 09
Mid-length Styling Kate Moss has the perfect midlength style. It is sitting on the shoulder and has the ability to be either straight or with a natural wave. Like all the other looks this summer, it’s about having the roughed-up, lived-in look.
‘Roughed Up Romantic’
REDHEADS With reds and coppers this season we love the all over look of rich, vibrant colour . If bright and vibrant colours aren’t your thing but you still want that hint of copper, go for either feature highlights or softer, copper tones. One person we love at the moment is Isla Fisher. She wears a soft copper blonde beautifully, capturing the true essence of a redhead with her complexion.
Romanticism is definitely making a comeback; think 1920’s to 1940’s waves, mixed with the 1980’s curl and you have your theme for Spring/ Summer 2009. Side parts with tousled curls, waves and texture is the girly look of the moment. This is a great anytime easy to wear look, seen on many 2009 catwalks, especially Proenza Schouler, Ellery, Karla Spetic, and Lisa Ho. French rolls have been a major hit on the international and local catwalks, with every designer giving it their own take. At RAFW 2009 Willow featured a flat French roll, that was beautiful modern and now! DION LEE featured another take on the classic, with a real roughed-up, tough, futuristic, edge.
Medium Roughed Up Apply small amount of texture spray to give the hair a little bit of strength. Blast your hair dry with your dryer. Once the hair is dry, apply a light spray and taking 2 inch horizontal sections starting at the back and working forward, taking your VS SASSOON 25mm Curler and curling your hair, leave out 2 inches from the roots, and only curl the mid lengths and ends. Finish with a light blast of cold air.
Short Wavy Apply a small amount of your chosen curl relaxant or smoother. Taking one inch sections twist the hair around your fingers working down the hair shaft. Once you have done the whole head, using a diffuser on your hair dryer, dry your hair to 80% dry and allow the rest to dry naturally
BRUNETTES Brunettes should be rich in colour, with luminous shine. You can also go for splashes of soft highlights using colours like caramel and honey tones. By doing this you will create that sun-kissed look, while maintaining your rich, beautiful colour.

2009 Australian Hair Fashion Awards
the year so far
And The Winner is..? what a year 2009 was for é SALON and our brilliant stylists! At the industry level we have been active and involved in many different events and awards ceremonies, and the successes of Emiliano, Marc and the é SALON Team have ensured 2009 is certainly a year to remember!
14
é Quarterly / Issue One / December 09
This is always the first stop on the calendar each year for any hairdresser! é SALON went into these awards having entered 5 categories and we were expecting big things this year! We were rewarded with a staggering 4 Finalist nominations - one from almost every category we entered! In April, the Sydney Town Hall was the setting for the gala event where the award winners were announced, and while we had to be content with missing out on 3 of the winning gongs, we were over the moon when Marc’s name was read out loud and clear as the 2009 Men’s Hairdresser of the Year! What a fantastic achievement.
F.A.M.E. Team Each year at Hair Expo, the Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence (F.A.M.E.) Team chooses 10 new members from around Australia to continue their proud tradition of educating and growing the best hairdressers in our industry. It’s been 3 years since é SALON had the excitement of having a member of staff on the F.A.M.E Team. In 2009, not only did we have 4 finalists in the selection process, two of our brightest young stars were chosen to be members of the 2009/2010 F.A.M.E Team. Read on in the magazine to discover who were the deserved winners!
Association of International Professional Hairdressing Press (AIPP) Each year, hair salons from around the world are called upon to enter their best photographic collections from the year into the Grand Trophy awards. There are 5 eligible categories, and in 2009, é SALON found themselves nominated in 3 of them! A HUGE achievement! Congratulations to Emiliano, Marc and the é SALON team for their finalist nominations in the Best Photography Award, Best Men’s Collection and Best Video categories. We’re very excited to announce that Emiliano was placed SECOND (from a possible 209 collections received) in the Best Photography Award! We would also like to extend our congratulations to Kylie Coutts, the talented photographer behind the shoot. The AIPP Grand Trophy Awards were established in 1997, with the intention of the Grand Trophy Award being to recognize outstanding achievements by professional hairdressers in photography and presentation of their work. A panel of hairdressing magazine editors, world-class hairdressers, and fashion photographers judge all AIPP entries.
The Tools To Use…VS Sassoon In 2009, Emiliano became a brand ambassador for the VS Sassoon range of styling tools, including Jilbere de Paris, a high-end range of hairstyling tools, consisting of curlers, irons and blow dryers. Emiliano and the team were responsible for the styling of the hair for all the VS Sassoon online commercials and directed the hair for the Australian launch of the step by step videos as seen on their website. As brand ambassador for Jilbere de Paris, Emiliano’s been involved as the ‘expert’ in product development and research, giving invaluable feedback for the launch of the Jilbere de Paris range in Australia. This saw Emiliano go to Melbourne for the launch of the range giving “tips and tricks” on how you can get the best out of these tools in your own home!

the year so far
In June this year we where asked be a part of the final leg of the TIGI Rockaholic Roadshow, a stage spectacular to launch their newest product range. The brief was to produce a high-impact, inspirational and educational one-hour show.

é Quarterly / Issue One / December 09
Rocking out with TIGI Rockaholic
Hair Expo
On-stage, é SALON styled 9 models, combining three editorial looks, three high fashion haircuts, and demonstrated two directional haircuts. We used our Transelement collection as inspiration, and true to our brief, produced a high-energy show. “The TIGI Rockaholic show in Luna Park in Sydney was the grand finale of the nationwide tour, presenting our new and innovative range of products. We were extremely proud and honoured that Emiliano and his experienced Team from e-salon were able to support us with their expertise and enthusiasm,” says Mark Thompson from TIGI. “Emiliano once again proved that he is a talented hairdresser and knows how to excite and motivate people around him. É SALON’s presentation had a very eclectic vibe and it was easy to see why É SALON are top contenders in nearly every Australian Hairdressing competition.”
Sponsored by TIGI Haircare Australia, our Creative Director, Emiliano, and the é SALON team presented to over 300 audience members at this year’s event. The show blended the collections Elements (judged as a Finalist in the NSW/ACT Hairdresser of the Year category at the 2009 Australian Hair Fashion Awards) and Transcendence. To give you some idea about how a show like this comes together, we start with our influences and inspirations. In this instant, Transelement was inspired by architecture; museums of contemporary art and the materials used. We wanted to express the fusion of unique, asymmetric and disconnected shapes and how they can be incorporated into styling and haircuts, all emphasised by the emergence of Copper in the Spring/Summer colour trends. And as we’ve seen recently, the colours of Africa were behind the influence of copper hues in our presentation. Variations of copper, from fiery reds to beautiful soft copper blondes were used to complement the shapes from modern architecture, in particular referencing the colours one may see in African tribes. Head to our Seasonal Trends to view the influences of coppers, reds and blondes for this Summer season!
Fast forward to June, and with the who’s who of Australia and the world’s hairdressing elite present at 2009 Hair Expo Australia, the é SALON Artistic Team encouraged everyone to be inspired with their presentation on the Look ‘n’ Learn stage of Transelement; a collaboration of two creative collections.

Staff Profile Bianca mancini Senior Colourist
me as a hairdresser, “ For it’s about giving my clients
what they desire as well as giving them the information to help maintain their hair colour. Bianca Mancini
What do you love most about being a colourist? What I love most about my job is how creative and challenging my work is from day to day. No head of hair is the same colour, texture or style - every individual is different. What I really love most is when a client comes in and says to me “go for it!” What’s been your most amazing experience at é SALON? I absolutely loved working on stage during the Hair Expo weekend. I worked with the TIGI Team for their Rockaholic show at Luna Park on the Friday Night, and on the Monday we did a show for the Look ‘n’ Learn Stage. Being on stage in front of so many people made me realise how exciting hairdressing is for me. Who is the biggest influence on your life and why? I would have to say my family and my partner are the biggest influence in my life. They are continually supporting me in everything I do and get excited when I am! With my Mama being an exhairdresser she knows all the ins and outs, ups and downs that are involved with being a successful hairdresser. As for who influences me in the industry I would have to say the team I work with. They are a talented and unique team that inspire me everyday. Most valuable hair tip when it comes to colour? The most valuable hair tip I could give someone when it comes to colour would be “don’t do it yourself”! We are the experts and that’s what I’m here for. For me as a hairdresser, it’s about giving my clients what they desire as well as giving them the information to help maintain their hair colour.

”
What are you listening to on your iPod at the moment? I like a variety of music artist, but they are all either soul artists or R ‘n’ B artists. Whose hair would you most like to colour? For me it’s the people I see everyday on the street that either have not had colour before, or the colour they have could use some creative input. Sometimes I feel like stopping them and saying “hey, I’m a hair colourist and I would love to do this to your hair”! I want to make people feel more beautiful and good about themselves. In your mind, which celebrity has the best hair colour at the moment? At the moment I would have to say I love Gisele Bündchen’s hair colour; the rich warm tones that she has throughout her hair, especially coming into summer. There looks to be a mixture of 3 tones that complement each other and work really well with her skin tone. Describe your individual style? Does this influence the way you colour hair? I love the fashion trends at the moment, but for me, my number one need for style is comfort. My individual style suits me and I can still look good but at the end of the day I want to feel comfortable. I believe you should work with your features because they are what you love and what everybody loves about you. When I’m working with my clients and making colour choices I want them to feel comfortable. I believe don’t fight it, work with it!

Transcendence By – Emiliano Vitale 2009 AIPP Gold Trophy Awards Best Photographic Collection 2nd Place
Inspired by the relationship that light and shape have in the creation of a total image, Transcendence is not about what fashion is, or what fashion is going to be; Transcendence is about who you are right now in the moment. Transcendence salutes the definition of the noun - the state of excelling, surpassing or going beyond the usual limits. Hair has become the medium that interlinks light and shape, thus transcending the image beyond that of fashion; a momentary thought that has been captured in time. Transcendence takes us beyond the limits of thought, to connect on an intimate level with the very core of the hair as a fibre. It is modern contemporary with a touch of Avant Garde.

Inspired by geometric shapes and textures, Electromotive is a collection that binds different eras and cultures into one. It fuses elements from the 90s and underground culture and fashion of today to create an homage to the likes of Grace Jones. TANGLE FREE HAIR IS POSSIBLE! We’ve had quite a few mums leave our salon this year with a secret weapon that banishes tangles and knots easily and painlessly in their grasp!
That secret weapon is the Tangle Teezer brush, which é SALON is proud to be distributing exclusively in Australia. Comments from clients about the brush have been a great endorsement for the Tangle Teezer – one mum was so impressed with her brush that she returned to the salon the next day to buy one for each of her 3 daughters! Another Mum in Melbourne couldn’t believe there were no tears when brushing her 4 yr old’s curly hair – “That brush is excellent! No tears this morning.” But just what is it about the Tangle Teezer that sets it apart from any other brush? The way the specially designed “teeth” are positioned on the brush means they flex just the right amount when you brush, helping to detangle and smooth your hair, even hair extensions, protecting it from damage.
36
é Quarterly / Issue One / December 09
So what this means for your hair is: • Used over a period of time, hair will be thicker and healthier • It’s great for maintenance of wigs, wefts, weaves and clip-on hairpieces, leaving them looking like new • Excellent results are delivered on even the tightest curls and afro hair • Daily brushing refreshes sleek styles, helps to smooth the cuticle which increases the shine, giving a professional look. If you haven’t already invested in a Tangle Teezer, you’ll want one everywhere you are - at home, one in the office and one at the gym – you will never want to be caught without it. In other words, the Tangle Teezer is an excellent way to extend your salon visit at home – ensuring strong, healthy hair, and a professional look, not to mention a great scalp massage!
Call é SALON to find out more about Keratin Smoothing Therapy – your hair will thank you for it!
NEW TREATMENT! Fresh From thE SALON Hair – for 4 Months?
It sounds impossible but we’ve discovered a treatment that delivers smooth shiny hair…and guarantees frizz-free results in rain and humidity for up to 4 months! Developed in Brazil, Keratin Smoothing Treatment is a revolutionary hair treatment service that infuses Keratin Protein into the cuticle layer of the hair shaft. This infusion promotes healing to the hair, blocks the effects of humidity and prevents environmental toxins from entering the hair.
