ARTIST RESIDENCES
The site was once an industrial zone which lost its relevance in a changing world. The buildings were abandoned and fell into disrepair, depressing the entire area. The movement of artists into Fort Point searching for cheap spaces with high ceilings spurred development which has brought vitality to the area along with a burgeoning residential and business community. The typology of a library is faced with a similar fate. Losing its relevance in society, there must be a driving force which transitions the library into a new era. Just as the factories are still standing, the foundation of physical media (i.e. books) must remain. However it is through the repurposing and integration of new programs which will bring the library back to its once vital state as the pillar of the community.
TERMS OF CRITICISM Does the design represent the idea of abandonment and renewal, as defined by the thesis? Does the programmatic layout encourage people to become aware of the media cube and interact with it? Does the library encourage community education and interaction? Does the bridge both continue the pathway of the greenway and encourage pedestrians to enter the library?
GENERATIVE DRAWING This sketch represents the method I used to obtain the forms. After placing the rotated cube onto the site, I mapped out the zoning setbacks and drew lines from points on the site, the line of the greenway and proposed pedestrian pathways.

INSPIRATION TWO THE ‘AHA’ MOMENT The point at which everything suddenly comes together and makes sense. The wrapped wires in this model seem randomly placed but look at a different perspective and see the pattern.

These two collages represent the atmosphere I want the users to experience. The first one focuses on that narrow corridor between two buildings with very different character. The second represents the view from the Harborwalk of the proposed pedestrian bridge extending across the channel.
