ABOUT ME

Hello, my name is Emily. I am a visual artist and illustrator with experience in both hand-drawn and digital media. I create realistic yet whimsical artwork that celebrates the everyday - the buildings we inhabit, the food we eat, the people we do life with.

My favorite mediums are watercolor, pen, and ink, and my work is largely inspired by my background in architecture and lifelong love of food.

Architectural Drawing

What started as a high school hobby has developed to be a long-time source of inspiration for my artwork. I now seek to illustrate the intricacies of the built environment in several different media, including pen and ink, watercolor, and collage.

Travel Journals

Drawing my way through the world allows me to take in new places and experiences in profound ways. I capture details of buildings, food, logos, and more, then fill in the pages with notes and data that help me remember the time as well as share it with others.

Food Illustration

I have always loved food, but working as a professional chef has heightened my awareness for all of its intricacies - in taste, texture, and presentation.

Those are the aspects that I have captured through these illustrations. I combine various mediums with hand-lettering to create a uniquely realistic style.

Collage

This series of collages centers on food and its packaging. I used recycled wrappers and magazines in conjuction with drawing to explore this aspect of everyday life.

Prof. Lapunzina is a full-time faculty member of the University of Illinois; other faculty members include specially invited visiting instructors from Europe and the United States. Magalí Veronelli serves as the Program Coordinator, working directly with administration, housing, and health-care issues. She joined the School’s Study Abroad Program in Versailles in 2007.

LOCATION

IASAP-BV is hosted at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Vallès (ETSAV), one of

ACADEMIC STRUCTURE All courses are taught in English. Courses are offered at both junior and senior levels. Fully equivalent to the curriculum on the Urbana-Champaign campus, the courses take full advantage of the program’s extraordinary location in Barcelona one of the world’s richest architectural cities. Courses are offered each semester in these four areas: Architectural Design, Structures, Architectural History, and Overseas Architectural Studies. Additionally, a Spanish or Catalan language course is offered during the Fall semester.

The ETSAV is located in Sant Cugat del Vallès, a beautiful, historic city within the Barcelona metropolitan area. CALENDAR dynamic and creative calendar includes a wide range of curricular and extracurricular activities. In addition to the required courses, few 4-8 day study|travel periods are built into the schedule for each semester. There are also guided field trips to historically and architecturally relevant sites. specially invited instructor leads weeklong Traveling Workshop at the beginning of the Spring semester. Students may also elect to travel throughout Europe during winter break. 16
As part of the Illinois School of Architecture graphic design team, I collaborated with faculty and staff to create graphics for the school and its programs. My teammates and I worked to redesign marketing materials, aligning with rebranding the University of Illinois as a whole.

ISoA Graduation Graphics

As the leader of this project, I created both the ticket and program booklet for the Illinois School of Architecture’s convocation in 2019.

I combined the School’s graphic style with a photograph of an iconic building on campus to provoke fond memories of the students’ time in the architecture program.

Postcards: Hand-Drawn, Digital, and Collaged

From celebrating a holiday to saying thank you to relaying information about an organization, my postcards combine lettering, drawing, and graphics to share each specific message.

At first, I simply wanted to teach myself to watercolor in a practical way. Soon enough, I found myself creating cards regularly as a way to keep in touch with friends and family while sharing my love of art and design.

Rather than photographing people or pets like much of my generation, I found myself capturing the built environment around me.

This soon became more than a hobby, as I received training from an architectural photographer during my year abroad. Today, I still find myself capturing built space, but with the principles of design in mind.

Design

Amidst my formal art classes in high school, I became intrigued by the elements of art. I soon started noticing the world around me much more vividly, like the color schemes of a ceiling above my head or the repetition of pillowcases on my bed.

This curiosity revealed a whole new world of photography to me, and continues to reveal how simple concepts can lead to impactful design.

East African Cultural Center | spring 2019 | cultural Casa Mitosis | fall 2019 | residential

Located in downtown Champaign, Illinois, this project aims to create a versatile space for community members to use year-round. The “folded” motif found in the roof and entry doors allows the indoor and outdoor environments to interact.

The trapezoidal site is embraced by a large, open space that captures its unique shape. Visitors can approach the market from multiple facades.

East African Cultural Center

Situated in the South Loop of Chicago, this project expanded my knowledge of urban architecture and revealed the importance of culture in design.

Through site visits, demographic resesarch, and an iterative process, this project challenged me to consider my “client” while implementing technical design strategies.

32
Model Detail

To incorporate a unique form into this urban site, a void in the shape of an East African drum is subtracted from the center of a regular volume. The facade, with its culturally-inspired pattern, becomes an exoskeleton to eliminate the need for extensive interior structure.

Casa Mitosis

Located in Barcelona’s Les Corts neighborhood, this residential project engages an existing city square to create a sense of community among neighbors.

The two adjacent buildings respond to the challenges of its urban site, with internal courtyards that bring natural light and ventilation into nearly every space.

Working as a pair, my partner and I developed a complete set of drawings and models while embracing our urban, European context.

Overall, this collaborative project taught us the value of teamwork as we considered the relationship between living and working.
