Lebbeus Woods describes his works:”What these structures do is plant themselves in the buildings. Introduce them in to the partition cubical spaces in the city. “ On the other hand the space is seducing people to getting close. We decompose the word”seductive”to several minor and more concrete meanings in order to find the perspective of visualizing.

Parametric Development of the Idea Music can be made static and in a form that could be fabricated as sculptural or architectural elements. We used the logic of music of Carmen as the parameterization method. Grasshopper plug-in Firefly is the tool of collecting frequency spectrum and convert it to data that used as coordinates of points. At one end is the curve generated from human voice, while the other is electronic MIDI format tone.

Seductive & Carmen Habanela by Carmen L’amour est un oiseau rebelle is a song that shows her character. The lyrics are a selfrevealing account of Carmen's concept of love. As a stubborn gypsies, Carmen would rather pay her life than restrain her love freedom. Characteristics such as repeated continuous downward slide phrase, tonal transformation between D minor and F major, and wandered melody within the octave of the bass and median tone, show Carmen‘s enthusiasm and unrestrained charm image.

Fabrication We focus on how the same music transform from unappealing to seductive, such as influence of adding tune and rhythm. In the fabrication phrase, we printed the cross-sectional view of the surface. Foam was cut accordingly and connected to

construct the surface mold. Four thousand straws stick into the red acrylic pore plate at different depth in order to simulate the curved surface. However we also have a regret. We initially intend to decode MIDI format music into hexadecimal format to control

relationship between data and elements of music, but unfortunately it failed for we cannot solve what each figure means corresponded to music element. So the data we got finally from Firefly may not necessarily be very accurate.

——Tokyo Culture Display Design on Airport Automatic Sidewalks Acadamic Work Department of Industail Design Instructor:Fan Yinliang 2013/Fall Individual Work

Exhibition Design Work”tokyo Stroll” was exhibited in “City·Museum·Tokyo” Design Exhibition at Gallery LE DECO Tokyo Utilizing the space besides automatic sidewalks at airports, the exhibition displays and promotes the exquisive culture of Tokyo. The inspration of the design came from keywords— fine, sophisticated and pile — extracted from Japanese Sakura, Kanji and food culture. The show is divided into three parts: food culture, kabuki culture and religious culture, located on three stretches of continuous automatic sidewalks. People could watch the exhibition freely when waiting or standing on automatic sidewalks.

Inspriations The theme of the Exhibtion is Tokyo City Museum. In the first design phrase of researching different aspects of Tokyo, I tried to explore into the interesting and unique feeling that Tokyo brings to visitors. Tokyo's features include small shops with large and small signs, ubiquitous vending machines, romantic cherry blossom season, and the delicate food. They all give a person a sense of delicacy. Just like a exquisite variety of sushi represents Japanese culture perfectly. And on this basis I determined two key words—Sophisticated and Refined—as the theme that I want to express.

Airport Automatic Sidewalks

Key Words The Site

Japan has long been a busy city. But hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties show a romantic aspect of Tokyo. Sakura holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture. From March 15 to April 15, the Japanese are out to watch the cherry blossom. I choose the site besides automatic sidewalks in airports to illustrate the feeling of strolling under sakura trees.

Tokyo will be the host of the 2020 Olympic Games. Athletes, visitors and the head of countries all over the world will gather in Tokyo to attend this world event, so a small-scale lightweight display on automatic sidewalks in airports could be a good method to promote and display city culture of Tokyo.

Formalization Based on the theme of “sophisticated and refined”, I composed small units into the overall form of the exhibition. And as airport sidewalks are often divided into parts and often continuous, it facilitates a continuous content parts of an exhibition.

Formula-E Challenge Formula-E Design Championship 2nd total score, Best Vehicle Design Award,1st Drag Way in China Went to the finals held in Art Center College of Design representing Tsinghua University 4th Hill Climb in Finals Group of 4— In charge of promotion, structure design and prototyping 2013/Summer The Formula E (elastic) challenge is held anually in Art Center College of Design's Graduate Industrial Design Department. The 13 Week long design project culminates with student teams competing in a variety of events with their uniquely designed remote controlled race vehicles propelled by energy stored in 16 feet of rubber band.

Ashtray Alley Drag way A classic drag race layout emphasizing, acceleration, top speed and straight line stability. Vehicles race one at a time against the clock on the 136 foot long straight. Sinclair

Masters Hill Climb This course is 228 feet of uphill grade with one 90 degree left turn midway. The event puts emphasis on vehicles to have sufficient torque and on driver skill to navigate the turn without losing too much momentum.

Sculpture Garden Flats A figure 8 with obstacles. At 322 feet this is the longest of the formula e tracks. This event puts emphasis on driving skill and ability of the vehicle to accelerate, brake and corner. Vehicles race one at a time against the clock.

The competition is divided into 3 parts which give an integrated test on all features of the vehicles.

Materials make a huge difference on the performance of the car. We conducted experiments and made decisions about materials along our design process. Though thinner than ball bearings, needle roller bearings generate more friction. Experiment models used simulation materials including ABS plastic tubes, density boards and aluminum while our final outcome uses carbon fiber tubes as main material to reduce weight while guaranteeing intensity. Metal was used on key position to ensure reliability.

Molding & Experimenting

V1

Without any experience on making a rubber band car, our first car made cannot even run. We connected the wheels and rubber bands together directly. Elastic torsion drives the back wheel to rotate. However high resistance between the wheel and rubber bands harmed the rubber bands. Besides the rubber can not hold the wheels as there is no fixed axis.

V2

Geared drive This draft model used geared drive which is a totally different approach from the previous version. The body of the car bent under tension which prove that there are problems with the choice of the material of nylon. Besides the structure requires a more precise match as the gears will bear a very strong tension. Problems would easily come up because of imprecise gear matching.

Experiments

The rubber bands would knot under torsion, and therefore they would become shorter and thicker. In this experiment, we winded the rubber band to see the relationship between its length, roughness and number of winds.

Version 3 Model Explorations

In this design phrase, we keep our attention on the direction of direct drive. We have made in total of 6 draft models to modify our design and solve the problems of gravity and weight of the car while testing factors that might influence the speed of the car.

This time we study the detail structure separately. The rear wheel serves as driving wheel. Half of the tube is dead fixed to the body directly, while the other end rotate with the rubber bands to drive the driving wheel. This version of the car let us realize the gravity problem. We had to add additional counter weight in case the car turns over because the front was too light. This edition focused on driving system without consideration of steering and braking systems.

Further improve the driving system. According to the previous research on the relationship between elastic torsional force and the length and weight ratio of the rubber bands, we bolder and shorten the drive pipe to solve the left problem of Version 3.0.

Way to further optimize the structure of the front wheel steering gear and motor fixed position in order to balance the car

This structure is so close to the sheering version of the final out come. We used the research results of Ackermann Angle, which means when the vehicle turns, steering wheels incline in order to get a better grip, because we know that the road condition of the competition site is not optimistic. This was the version that most close to the final outcome. We used drilling and milling machine to drill hole of the work piece. The rear wheel is made of a one-piece nylon material.

V3.5 This version is significantly lighter that Version 3.4. The car body is made up of simplest and lightest parts which only weighs 100g. Added to wheels, the whole car weighs 316g. In our opinion, heavier wheels could provide better stability and grip. Using CNC machining technology, we can get a more precise control of position of bearings and fit and then ensure the rear wheel is arranged coaxially with the driving tube.

The Competition Other team members track and protect vehicles while one of the members control the car.

Our car got the championship of Drag Way at 6'53'' in China and the forth of Hill Climbing in Art Center. Better control conflicts with high speed. With a lack of grip, our car bumped when facing corners and rough road condition thus resulted in a not good enough performance in the figure 8 competition. Hegii Sanitary Flagshop Design Hegii Sanitary/ Department of Industail Design Instructor:Liu Qiang Research with Wang Bin/ Xueke Independent Design Solution 2014/Summer-Fall In this project, we cooperated with Hegii Sanitary—one of the top ten Chinese sanitary companies. The pre-project research lasted for one month. With a focus on sanitary market and exhibition method of sanitary products, we visited all the Hegii shops around Beijing. Study has found that a simple space reconstruction of one store can not fundamentally solve the problem existed in the sales of Hegii Sanitary. The research provides reference for a new sales mode and the shop distribution and the strategy of branding shop in Beijing. The solution is a 600 m2 flagship store cooperating with close-to-user community stores that covers the whole Beijing.

Hierarchy of existing stores of Hegii

Investigation of existing situation Current stores of Hegii design is roughly classified into three levels according to the size and location of the stores. We visited all the 25 Hegii retail stores in Beijing, only to find a mess in home furnishing market. We found that under fierce competition

and cost restraints, enterprises care little about how to improve their design to meet the needs of its customers. From the distribution map of Hegii stores, we can see most of them distributed in the southern city of Beijing, the northwest suburbs and north-central household areas.

Plans of Current Store When we draw floor plan of every Hegii stores in Beijing, we found that all of the 25 stores are very similar in terms of exhibition method. Intensive show is the main method with only one out of 25 stores have scenarios show. The aisle width is about 90-120 mm. Even if the largest stand-alone store, there is no large difference with general stores.

Channel length Through short channels, manufacturers can master the consistency of the retail price of final channel and a good store display environment to improve brand reputation and to guarantee the service level of channel terminal. On the one hand, because high-grade sanitary ware products have a higher value per unit, long channel distribution costs more which results in losing of competitiveness.

I have spent half an year before my renovation searching for furniture to make sure that I get enough information about the product. I have been to 7-8 furnishing markets to make the final decision. I was seldom influenced by the decoration of the store itself, because the only thing the decoration does is telling me that the brand is reliable.

Design Phrase The Site The flagship store is located in the forth ring road of Beijing. The north part of Beijing is the center area of furnishing industry. Surrounded by Easy Home Furnishing store and neighborhoods, this store has a cluster competitive strength. The flagship store has an area of 490m2.

The role of the flagship store As the largest shop in Beijing, the Hegii flagship store is a coalition of product exhibition, office area, negotiating, promotion events and after sale service. I started form planing the circulation,following the recognition process of people. The product density increases through the path. Design office and office area are located in the back part of the exhibition as part of the branding promotion plan.

The Theme: Renew In the design phrase, I did brainstorming about brand experience should be conveyed to costumers besides solving the current problems. After searching about history and user experience of sanitary products, I decided that the sanitary system should give a renewed life experience to customer. And the design principle is to bring the feeling of refresh and renew to customer as well as express Hegii’s brand identity of responsibility.

Children need to develop a sense of personal control over physical skills and a sense of independence.

Needs and Requirement survey

In the first stage, I looked into the physical and mental development of children aged from 2 to 4 and put forward several key points as the principles for future design. Attention were given to many factors includ-

ing the children’s height, their recognition of color and sound, and their attention development. As for the choice of material, I decided on the soft and safe stuff to avoid danger.

Working in a preschool education center, Clivia is responsible for 0-3 years old children's music course. She said, in her preschool education center, the class consist of art, music, dancing and cooking class. She is usually give classse to 8-10 children and parents at the same time. Music form different countries and regions made up all the themes of the courses. Based on different themes of the subjects, different musical instrument is employed. The children are not required to produce a piece of music with tunes. The more important thing is that they can emit sound and feel different sounds. However, there is usually no intheraction on the class among children in such a young age. Sometimes if there is only one instrument, the teacher will encourage them to share. 45

only through 1:1 modeling and experiment can the sounds be really captured. Some of the routines have a good starting point—like the hanger frame that could allow parents and children create their own

instruments— but failed in creating appealing sounds that would draw children’s attention. Finally I decided to use discarded badminton packaging and PE plastic pipes to produce a rich resonant sound.

Made of PE pipe, the final solution, with the increase of the pipe length, in the process of pulling long pipe can produce novel and interesting sounds. They have the advantage of being able to constantly stretch and retract, and they can be bent into different shapes. The characteristics of the pipe itself can encourage imagination and nurture family connections of children.

Materials and Adaptability The activities of 2-4 year-old children are mainly at home and in the community, so I decide to use easyto-get recyclable materials for the assembling of new products. One unit of a resonance tube can serve ten children to play simultaneously with good sound effect at the same time. It can be brought home and also can be assembled easily in a public space of a community.

Field Testing In field testing, we had the pupils from the Tsinghua elementary school as subjects. They voted on all the products and my product had the most votes (13 out of 14 students). Attracted by the novel sound produced by the tubes, the children loved to fiddle about with them.

In the first stage of research, we observed for three days the condition of bus stations outside Tsinghua Park, and found that they were not designed properly and adversely affected the stream of people and their safety. Through minute observation, we found people's behaviors include requiring info, waiting, seeing the bus, getting in line and getting on the bus. These behaviors directly affect how the function planning impacts on the form when designing the bus stations.

Motion principles

When he came to the world, winter began to change its color. The entire model is a three-layer cube. The ball impacts on translucent plastic boards that connected on the frame by bearings when rolling drown along the track. Colors show when the boards rotated 90 degrees from perpendicular position to the audience. The first ball triggers the next one to move at the end of the cube and makes the color darken and warming as layers overlapping one another.

Color Analysis Through color analysis, we found spring is a process of changing colors, from the cold colors in early spring to the warm colors in late spring. The color changes from blue to olivine and finally to green. We applied the result of color analysis in the test on translucent acrylic to develop a color scheme. 68

Professional Work Qingtie Signage Design 2014/Summer Group of 5/ Design team leader in charge of the organization of final result presentation, distribution of tasks, stream of people analysis and distribution map

This project emphasizes on analysis of the site and its user and a systmatic plan of the signage system. Research and development center of CRSC consist of 4 buildings, outdoor spaces and 3 floors of basement parking lot. Our team believes that only with a full understanding of the center's operation and management system, can we make a reasonable and easy-to-use guide system. In this case, peopleoriented design means rational planning.
