MESSAGE FROM KEITH PARROTT

AMITA Health President & CEO Dear Friends,

My second week on the job here at AMITA, we had our first COVID-19 patient — the second patient in the U.S. I immediately began to learn about our team and organization in dealing with a healthcare crisis. A wise person once told me that crisis reveals character. I am seeing the AMITA character come to light in our response to COVID-19, and it is very encouraging. Our entire team has stepped up during a very challenging time to respond to the needs in our community and deal with this crisis with grace under pressure. Our caregivers are making daily sacrifices, putting themselves in harm’s way to make sure our community has the care it needs. Our leaders and support staff are working around the clock to support our patients and frontline associates while balancing concern for their own families and friends. And our foundation community has rallied around us, aiding our response and helping take care of our associates as they take care of the most vulnerable in our communities. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, there is a sense of fear about what our world is experiencing. But here at AMITA, I see people responding to this crisis in positive ways that inspire hope and that will move our mission forward. I am inspired by the dedication to our mission, and I am proud to be a part of this organization. One of the questions I heard often during my first few weeks on the job was “What is AMITA?” In our response to the COVID-19 crisis, every day our identity comes into clearer focus: caregivers from all disciplines providing selfless service; leaders working nonstop to ensure those caregivers have the resources they need to take care of our patients; a spirit of cooperation and teamwork that is growing stronger as we face the inevitable surge in patients; strong faith-based sponsors; and the unwavering support and partnership of our communities. AMITA is a truly integrated system of care based in faith and guided by an enduring mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus. Continued on pag ge 6 2

We May Be Apart — but We Are Not Alone

Thank you for rallying around our caregivers in the fight against COVID-19. As AMITA Health’s caregivers have responded to needs in our communities related to COVID-19, our communities have rallied around them. Thank you for your support! “As challenging as this is for all of us, and especially for those on the front lines, we are seeing our communities stepping up and at their best,” says Melanie Furlan, Senior Vice President and Chief Philanthropy Officer. “It’s important that we hold onto that.”

Support Has Poured In Since March 20, generous community members have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to help take care of the needs and challenges our health system and frontline associates are now facing as they take care of the most vulnerable in our communities. One community member contributed an incredible $150,000. Our medical staffs also have led the way. 4

Technology and Telehealth Are Pivotal Thanks to philanthropy, approximately 700 additional telehealth licenses are helping in the fight against COVID-19. TapCloud is playing a bigger role than ever in helping us connect with and care for patients virtually. Donations from physicians, community members and businesses are providing more tablets and other technology to allow more virtual patient visits. Past philanthropic funding for technology at the AMITA Health GlenOaks Therapeutic Day School Glendale Heights is even allowing students to continue their learning and therapies from home without interruption.

Compassion, Excellence, Community

Leaders from legacy foundations unite to set vision for philanthropy. Over the past year, leaders from our legacy Adventist, Alexian Brothers and Presence Health foundations have renewed our foundations’ commitment to our mission — to serve people who need help. And they have set a vision for how donors can continue to make an amazing difference throughout all communities served by AMITA

Health. That vision stems from the same principles that guided our religious founders: • C ompassion: Your gifts help us care for people on a personal level, meeting them where they are, getting to know them as they are, and providing understanding and support over the long term, whatever their individual needs. • E xcellence: Your gifts make the exceptional caliber of clinical care people expect from academic medical centers accessible to every individual and community we serve across greater Chicagoland. • C ommunity: Your gifts help address unmet needs, removing barriers people face to getting help and allowing us to work in partnership with other organizations to solve widespread community problems.

” Your Gifts Are Putting Compassion into Action The greatest investment — in human life “ They’re the only ones who understand. They’re amazing.” – Jessica Jessica and Ryan lost hope that they might ever meet their baby when Jessica’s water broke at 14.5 weeks. Yet, Talan’s heart kept beating. He was delivered via caesarean section at 29 weeks. For 96 days, his parents made the daily trek to their second home at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale’s level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Today, thanks to the excellent care he received, Talan is thriving.

A chance to pay it forward “ To know that there’s a place like this, all I can say is thank you.” – Nicole Nicole learned how to love herself thanks to the love she received at the AMITA Health Housing and Health Alliance. After battling addiction for years, she has regained her sobriety, moved into her own apartment and now works as a case manager helping women who, like her once, are beginning their own recoveries.

From hopelessness to hope “I’m grateful beyond any measure of words.” – Paul Paul’s CT scan showed tumors throughout his body. Unbeknownst to Paul, someone at AMITA Health Saint Francis Hospital Evanston applied for a grant to get him a clinical trial medication he needed. After completing the treatment, his body was cancer-free. Paul gives total credit to his physicians and caregivers at AMITA Saint Francis for caring so much about him that they applied for a grant that saved his life.

” With Your Help, Saving More Lives Like Skip’s Through philanthropy, a new hybrid Cath lab will enable AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center Joliet’s nationally recognized team of heart and vascular specialists to launch Will County’s first structural heart program. “It would be better to keep patients within their community for their families’ sake and their sake, and to do these procedures close to home,” says Chris Kolyvas, MD, Interventional Cardiologist.

Judy and John “Skip” Moroz with Interventional Cardiologist Chris Kolyvas, MD (center), at AMITA Saint Joseph Joliet.

The Life You Save Could Be Your Own Help keep advanced heart care close to home. John “Skip” Moroz was driving to the bank with his wife Judy when Judy noticed the car was veering into oncoming traffic. When she alerted Skip they were in the wrong lane, he didn’t respond. Judy powered off the car. An off-duty nurse passing by started CPR. When the medics arrived, they took Skip to the nearest hospital — AMITA Saint Joseph Joliet. By the time they got to the Carolyn J. Czerkies Emergency Department, about 18 minutes had passed since Skip had taken a breath.

We’re thankful to God and to the little angels who took care of him. — Judy

“They didn’t know at that point what was going to happen,” Judy says. Skip was taken to the Cath lab, where Interventional Cardiologist Chris Kolyvas, MD, and his team worked to determine what had caused Skip’s cardiac arrest. From there, Skip was taken to the Intensive Care Unit, where the care team initiated hypothermia protocol — a process of slowly cooling down the body over 24 hours to try to preserve brain function and alleviate some of the strain on the organs before very slowly bringing the body temperature back up to normal over another 24 hours. What they learned after 48 hours shocked Judy: Skip had retained almost all his brain functioning. After a series of tests and consultations to ensure his heart, brain and body were okay — and only six days after he first arrived unconscious and unresponsive in the emergency department — he got to go home. Skip and Judy credit the exceptional care he received with saving his life. “We were really blessed,” says Judy. Watch this video to learn more: https://youtu.be/TNar-ptlzUk Thanks to philanthropy, local middle-school students will benefit from the new 24/7 app and pilot program.

24/7 Offers Connection at the Tap of Students’ Fingertips Thanks to Foglia Family Foundation, new app helps local children cope. Even before COVID-19 disrupted life, mental health had been a growing concern among young people across the country. Concerned about how this trend was playing out in our local communities, the Foglia Family Foundation funded a three-year pilot program that will make it easier for students to share their feelings and get help when needed.

This is a way for self-care. This is a way to help you help yourself.

— Local middle-school student, describing the need for 24/7 app In focus groups last year, more than 100 local middleschool students responded unanimously that they would use an app designed to help them express feelings and connect them with support when needed. “There are honestly some days where I’ve experienced I don’t know how to deal with this and I need to talk to somebody,” says one middle-school student at a participating school. As a result of those focus groups, the 24/7 pilot program

10

is being rolled out in four local middle schools. Available for download free of charge on smartphones and mobile devices, the app is being developed by TapCloud with young people in mind. “We knew from day one that if we were going to develop a program to help kids, we had to meet them where they are. And wherever they are, their phone is in their hands,” says Tom Riley, Founder and Chairman of TapCloud. Through the app, students will be able to check in every day on how they are feeling compared to the day before. The app will track their responses and share tips to help them cope. A licensed mental health professional employed by AMITA Health will monitor responses 24/7. “There’s somebody there all the time who is employed by the hospital, who has experience and knows what to do should there be a crisis,” says Sara Mathews, Vice President of Operations for AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital Hoffman Estates. All information submitted through the app is confidential. “Everything is deidentified,” Mathews says. “It’s discreet. It’s private. And it also allows them a way to share those feelings in a way that feels natural to them.”
