Ever since I was young, I was constantly told stories of

my Omi and Opa growing in Munich and the surrounding

countryside. I heard stories of my grandfathers daily life in beautiful countryside of Germany, and stories of my grand-

mother surviving life in a war torn country. These beautiful stories, and my last name, were a constant reminder of my German heritage. 12

THIS MONTH’S CITY

Three Must Things To Do In

MUNICH, GERMANY 1

WATCH THE EISBACH SURFERS Scared of sharks? Do oceans freak you out? Try surfing smack in the middle of Munich, Bavaria’s capital city.

This is the Eisbach, a small channel of the Isar River

that runs through Munich’s big, central park. Every day, more than one hundred aspiring river shredders line up to

surf the continuous, ice-cold wave that rolls through the channel all day long. Not even snow holds them back!

2

VISIT THE MUNICH RESIDENCE The Munich Residence served as the seat of government

and residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. .

The rooms and art collections spanning a period that

begins with the Renaissance, and extends via the early

Baroque and Rococo epochs to Neoclassicism, bear witness

to the discriminating taste and the political ambition of the Wittelsbach dynasty.

3

DRINK BEER IN A BIERGARTEN For centuries, beer is and has been an important part of the

culinary and cultural heritage of Bavaria and Munich. The

best choice for having an authentic “beer experience” are the

traditional beer halls (indoors) and beer gardens (outdoors). The Augustiner Braustuben is one of the best biergat-

ens Munich has to offer. Off the beaten tourist track, this huge beer hall provides good atmosphere, great booze and cheap food. ·
