BIO #3

EMILY LEYLAND After entering into the major of interior design without much long-term thought, it only took one class to convince me that I had made the right choice. I realized that improving our surrounding environment is a job that requires deep thought and creativity, two characteristics that give me great pleasure. Dissecting a project to create its best incarnation is something that I enjoy doing. Through my years of learning, I have grown into a designer that is defined by a concept. Buildings cannot just be the shell that contain us but an artistic representation of an idea with the added bonus of being completely functional. Sustainability has also had a large role in my education. We are living in a world where there is much excess. As a designer, I have the opportunity to minimize our waste and find ways to avoid creating unhealthy habitats. Sustainability should not be an option, but a requirement. It is the way of the future that needs to take root in the present.

YEAR SENIOR PROJECT DESCRIPTION In Thesis 1, students research a topic that is explored within the realm of interior design during Thesis 2

DESIGN DESCRIPTION This thesis addressed the role of technology within public environments. Through the use of integrated technology, users of this space are inspired to create face-to-face connections rather than connections created in the virtual reality. The concept these ideas stemmed from was the spider web, relating to the internet and its ability to connect people much like a natural web does.

HEALTHCARE #11

DESIGN DESCRIPTION This project resonated with me, as my mother was diagnosed with cancer during my college career. I used my experience accompanying her to treatments to create a cancer center that could better serve the patients as well as visitors and employees. The concept for this cancer center was the rain forest, as 70% of all cancer preventing medicines originate from that habitat.

RENOVATION #15

YEAR JUNIOR PROJECT DESCRIPTION A GROUP PROJECT TO DESIGN TEMPORARY HOUSING UNITS WITHIN AN ABANDONED TRAIN STATION IN FLORENCE, ITALY.

PERSPECTIVE//DESK

DESIGN DESCRIPTION This was a group project and our concept was based on the connections found in industrial environments. The apartments were intended as study abroad housing, and the concept of industrial connections is a metaphor to the connections created while abroad. My section of the project included the layout of the apartments, and the design was based on the interiors of antique trains.

LIGHT DESIGN #19

YEAR JUNIOR PROJECT DESCRIPTION DESIGN A CUSTOM LIGHT FIXTURE THAT INCORPORATES AT LEAST ONE LIGHT SOURCE

PERSPECTIVE//REVIT & PHOTOSHOP

DESIGN DESCRIPTION My luminaire is called switchboard. Switchboard is an interactive luminaire that allows the user to control the amount of light needed through touch. It is multi-functional and can be used to create division with a space or as a customizable art piece. The lighting is up to you...

SCULPTURE #20

YEAR SOPHOMORE PROJECT DESCRIPTION DESIGN A UNIQUE SCULPTURE USING CONCEPTUAL MASS IN REVIT TO BE PLACED WITHIN A LARGER SPACE.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION My sculpture was inspired by the waves to the ocean, relating to it’s location in Salem, MA, near the coast. It is constructed completely of textured glass, giving the feeling of moving waves. The intent was for it to be an interactive sculpture that could be walked through and observed from every angle.
