LeBreton Portal ARCS 3107B: Fourth Year: Professor: Location:

Studio 6 - Comprehensive Housing Fall Term, September - December 2017 Benjamin Gianni Ottawa, ON

Illumination LeBreton invites residents and guests to a community of vibrant activity on a once barren landscape. Moving East to West across the site, individuals are guided along Canada Drive; a commercial district leading them toward Ottawa’s newest event centre. As such, Canada Drive becomes a significant part of the circulation network which transports users from one moment to the next. The LeBreton Portal introduces a similar gesture running North to South, extending out from the light rail transit station toward Nation’s Park and Albert Street. The LeBreton Portal ultimately becomes a void within its surrounding urban fabric which carries residents and guests from park to aquaduct to light rail transit and beyond.

Bird’s Eye of LeBreton Portal Master Plan

Cutting through the existing Ilumination Lebreton massing fabric reveals a pedestrian portal running North to South.

The portal will draw people from the public park in the North, to the light rail transit station located in the South of the site, and vice versa.

The portal creates a more balanced circulation network throughout the site. It also opens up space for a more private park for the surrounding residential area located North of the Aqueduct.

Along with a reinvented master plan came new design directives. The triangular park space at the Northern edge of the site plays the role of a passage, meant to guide individuals down toward the aquaduct. As such, at the aquaducts edge are two new bridges forming a crossroads. Development along the park stemmed from the desire to emphasize and explore the new urban strategy. At the northern point of the park, stands a 33 storey residential building: The Gateway Building. This structure stands out from its proposed surrounding context of midrise buildings ultimately becoming an icon, distinguishing the entrance of the park. As individuals wander from the parks edge toward the aquaduct, they come to a crossroads of two bridges. Leading from a private residential development towards a lively commercial hub, these bridges act as an extension of the LeBreton Portal park space.

The design incorporates traditionally industrial materials elevated by a simple, yet rigorous design based on alternating circulation space with program space. Main entrances are each suggested by a shift in the rectangular form, revealing through passages into the building’s main atrium space. A framed view of Tokyo Bay presents itself here, with smaller hallways branching off leading to the various program elements. Each of the program spaces inhabits its own more separate area of the community centre, while all connecting in the atrium. This becomes a space which celebrates the merging of the arts, literature, sport and cuisine local to Japan. A sawtooth design brings light into the heavy concrete roof and illuminates the spaces which are heavily travelled.

Kinder Kanata ARCS 3105D: Third Year: Professor: Location:

Studio 4 - Comprehensive School Design Fall Term, September - December 2016 Eric Archembault Kanata, Ottawa, ON

A child’s first experience at school should be fun, educational, and most importantly comfortable. Kinder Kanata sits on a site surrounded by water and wildlife, a location perfect for learning about the surrounding environment. The design features four main program elements, which join in a ring to create a sense of community and welcome. A familiar pitched roof design covers the programmed ring to reveal a central gathering space where the students can play and interact with each other and with nature. The varying ceiling heights accommodate a variety of program elements such as classrooms, a library, a gymnasium and administrative areas. The kindergarten is designed at a scale for children to allow them to feel comfortable in their new school. Kinder Kanata aims to unite building design and landscape in a unique learning environment that can serve the surrounding suburban community. 17

Illumination Village

Located in the heart of Ottawa’s ByWard Market, Illumination Village strives to bring light to a formerly underdeveloped site. Bulbs of white light flood through a central plaza space, defining a network of pathways which connect to the surrounding marketplace in all directions. These pathways are used to integrate the plaza with the diverse range of attractions offered by the ByWard Market, while giving pedestrians a place to pause and engage with the unique atmosphere of their surroundings. The flexible design allows for a range of uses, depending on the occasion. The Plaza’s daily cycle begins to reveal playful patches of oversized flower bulbs during the day, and during the evening, the bulbs create a garden of light for pedestrians to float through.

The Carleton University Welcome Centre presents a public face to the city and its current and prospective students. It aims to showcase the university, its mission, and accomplishments in research and teaching. It also offers a space to hold events open to the public and spaces for student gathering and study. Located at the main vehicular and pedestrian entrance to the University, the pavilion shows a gently curving architectural expression that balances the private needs of an intellectual community and the public expressions of Ottawa’s citizens. The leaf-like form takes inspiration from the ever present natural environment of the campus. A comprehensive design shows natural wood and masonry construction used to display the materials native to Carleton’s campus with the surrounding river and wooded areas.

The recreation of working drawings and diagrams of the Baha’i Temple of South America, designed by Siamak Hariri. Various vector programs were used to update, and recreate a series of design and construction drawings intended for the publication, Embodied Light, a book that illustrates and explains the temple’s design through to its construction. The temple features a dome-like design with nine distinct leaf-shaped sections. The nine leaves converge at the apex of the dome to reveal a central oculus. Many of the drawings are meant to show the design development and construction development of the sections, as they contain complex framework and cladding systems. I helped to recreate and update these drawings and diagrams.

The Tom Patterson Theatre is designed to act as the jewel of Stratford, Ontario. Its luminocity was brought to life with the use of various CAD and Adobe programs to create rendered elevation and section drawings. The theatre is nestled into the shoreline of Lake Victoria, surrounded by an expanse of lush gardens. In addition to rendered drawings, a physical model was used as a medium to convey the organic building and landscape design to the design committee and to the citizens of Stratford. I excecuted the rendering of the elevation and section drawings, and assisted in the making of the physical model.
