reception/ retail design development Services Performed: • Material and Finish Selections • Custom Millwork Design and Drawings • Construction Document Drawings This project was truly a collaborative process. Beginning with the preliminary concept done by the Director of Design, I selected material and finish options for the client to choose from. The samples were grouped together to create three separate aesthetics, all falling into the “modern, organic, sophisticated” look requested by the client. With the preliminary concept rendering in hand, I created the custom millwork drawings for the client’s approval. This included drawings of the reception desk, retail display unit, and recessed storage. Once the millwork drawings were approved, I made the Schematic Plan, Wall Finish Plan, Electrical Plan, Reflected Ceiling Plan, Elevations, and Cabinet Detail Plans for the client’s build out. I collaborated with the Director of Design and design engineer to create specific sections showing how to create the built-in retail displays. The spa has now been open for a year and is receiving glowing reviews for their services and interior design.

new franchisee construction documents Services Performed: \ • Preliminary Floor Plan • Reflected Ceiling Plan • Schematic Plan • Floor Finish Plan • Reception Elevations • Wall Finish Plan • Custom Millwork & Restroom Elevations • Electrical Plan • Plumbing Plan One of my main design objectives at Michele Pelafas Inc. is the creation of floor plans and construction documents for each new franchisee. The franchise has very specific design details and standards, such as custom built-in retail displays, that must be incorporated and upheld in every location. The process starts with the receipt of the landlord’s drawing of the potential space. From there, the preliminary layout is sent to the client within two days, and the construction documents are completed within a week of layout approval.

This project began with a vacant office space in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. At the first site visit, the space had bad water damaged acoustical ceilings, torn and tattered carpet, and peeling paint. The client’s goal was to turn this long forgotten space in to the premeire luxury nail salon in the neighborhood. To acheive the client’s desired look - glamourous, warm, Old Hollywood- blush tones, white tufting, and hints of gold were incorporated with soft neutrals and warm lighting. A crucial part of the project was coordinating with the architect, landlord, and contractor to verify the on-site conditions and possibilities in terms of structure, ceiling, and engineering. By working together, we were able to maximize the design potential while working within the confines of the space’s unique restrictions. The design process took approximately two months from start to submitting the permit drawings. Throughout the build out, communication with the contractor and business owners was essential to keep the project running smoothly. After months of hardwork, Re’Luxe Nail Spa and Boutique opened to rave reviews.

trade show booth design Services Performed: • SketchUp Model • Elevations • Materials Sourcing • Construction Coordination • In-Field Installation Coordination Michele Pelafas Inc. had it’s first booth at America’s Beauty Show in McCormick Place spring of 2016. The whole design team collaborated on a floor plan that would best fit a wide range of products. With previous experience in theater sets and construction, I volunteered to take the lead on the design development and construction of the booth structure. I created elevations, models, and shop drawings based on the floor plan and coordinated with our production facility to create the structure in the lightest, most cost effective, and efficient to install way. For the trade show, I also was on the installation and tear down team; ensuring that the booth was constructed properly on site.

PEDICURE PLATFORM TOP VIEW

For this project, the client chose to build their own platform on site. In addition to a furniture layout and plumbing and electrical elevation, I made a platform layout for their contractors to follow on site. By coordinating with the client’s contractor, design team, and the manufacturing shop at Michele Pelafas Inc., the client’s installation went smoothly and their pedicure area achieved the desired look of luxurious tranquility.

nail salon dual purpose custom furniture Services Performed: • Furniture Concept and Design Development • Furniture Anthropometric and Functional Analysis • Furniture Layout and Installation Drawings • Furniture Material Selections Starting with the client’s own inspiration image and one of Michele Pelafas Inc.’s standard chairs, the client and I were able to achieve the mutual goal of creating dual purpose chairs that could be used for manicures and pedicures, while also giving guests a sense of privacy. The design of the dual purpose chair and its configuration in the space evolved over several months. Throughout the process, the client, her contractor, and I communicated though phone calls, emails, and labeled SketchUp models. Being able to communicate visually, through SketchUp, was a huge asset in the process. In order to ensure this highly customized order was completed successfully, I took personal responsibility following the order through each step of the production and test fitting process.

studio Apartment design Services Performed: \ • Condo Association Renovation Proposal • Floor Plan • Kitchen Cabinet Layout • Elevations • Material and Finish Selections • Hardware Specifications Just shy of 600 sq.ft. this studio condo in the historic Printer’s Row neighborhood of Chicago, was completely lacking the charm expected of a historic building. Converted to condos in the 1980’s, this condo came with linoleum flooring in the kitchen and bath, lumpy brown carpet, iconic outdated cabinets, and one single light fixture in the hallway. After an extensive renovation application process with the property manager, the client was approved for nearly a full renovation. The project included replacing the existing flooring with reclaimed fir flooring, reconfiguring and replacing the kitchen cabinets and appliances, installing lighting throughout, and restructuring a hallway to create a walk in closet. White Shaker style cabinets with butcher block countertops add vintage character to the space. Stainless steel appliances, sleek bar pulls, and chevron tile pattern incorporate modern elements for a well balanced space. Double stacked upper cabinets provide maximum storage in this cozy kitchen.

Multipurpose footboard, room divider, and tv cabinet with curtains on either side. Raise height of overhang to create an eat-in bar, which wraps around the kitchen cabinets

residential open concept design Services Performed: \ • Preliminary Consultation • Concept Development • Material and Finish Selections • Furniture and Fixture Selections This family sought to bring their out-dated, Tuscan themed open concept living and dining area into the 21st century to go with their new custom kitchen. In the initial consultation, the homeowner expressed that they wanted to keep their existing floors and dining furniture, color scheme possibilities were built from there. The winning combination was centered around Benjamin Moore Fusion. Originally, the homeowners were hesitant of the name, but after seeing the other finishes and the complete concept, they took the plunge! The Fusion becomes a neutral backdrop in the dining area for the regal purples, pops of rust, and plays off of warm creams. Rich textures, industrial iron accents, hints of sparkle, rough stone, and warm wood tones balance the space. The mixture of materials and round and rectangular shapes creates an inviting oasis for the whole family.

zen master bath remodel Services Performed: • In-Home Consultation • Fixture and Material Selections • 2020 Drawing • SketchUp Model • Contractor Coordination These HGTV obsessed homeowners came into the Benson Stone showroom looking to turn their outdated master bath into a transitional, zen retreat on a $15,000 budget. After selecting materials in the showroom, an in-home consultation determined the design direction for the new master bath layout. The built-in whirlpool tub and acrylic shower were removed to make way for a new free standing tub and a custom tiled shower. The 2020 drawings were used select cabinets and to obtain a contractor bid. The SketchUp Model was used to create a detailed shower elevations and perspectives for the homeowners and tile installers to give a full picture of the finished product.

Services Performed: • In-Home Consultation • 2020 Drawings • SketchUp Model • Material Selections Space was at a premium for this homeowner and the main priority in the remodel. A custom vanity with door storage racks and tip out sink fronts was selected for the sink area and a 60”H recessed cabinet was designed to fit between the studs to make the real storage impact. Opening up the existing tiled in shower stall and replacing it with a new custom tiled shower with glass doors visually expanded the small bathroom.

These sun-loving homeowners had their kitchen and both upstairs bathrooms remodeled while they were in Florida for the winter. An initial in-home consultation and and design presentation meeting was done prior to their departure, but the rest of the communication was done with their contractor through picture messages, email, phone calls, and site visits. A soft-grey painted cabinet with a semitraditional door style was used to pull the kitchen out of the 90’s, but still keep with the style of the home. A large eat-in island fills a formerly vacant space and adds both functional storage and a place for the grandkids to help in the kitchen. The tall mullion doors add depth and visual interest to the appliance wall, by breaking up the stainless steel and deep cabinetry. The wood hood hones in the traditional look and provides the perfect frame for the mosaic tile insert above the stove. Overall, the materials and design create an airy family kitchen. 215 14 " 142 12 "
