Stompin’ Tom Connors It seems Mr. Conners is going to be getting his wish, as “the stompin man” will be making one last tour to Sudbury. However, it’ll have to be for good this time, as a group of Sudbury artists are looking to immortalize the folk singer as a bronze statue to be displayed in the city’s downtown core. A non-profit group of local Sudburians are looking to honour Stompin Tom Connors with a life size bronze statue. Local sculptor Tyler Fauvelle has finished creating the life size replica of Stompin Tom and the artwork has already been sent to the foundry for the bronze

casting. The final resting place of the statue has yet to be announced but many downtown locations are being considered. Stompin Tom has been a Canadian music staple for the good part of half a century, from his early days of hitchhiking across the nation and playing folk tunes, to his later years of sold out crowds and national recognition. Many of his songs, including the widely popular “Sudbury Saturday Night”, come from Tom’s days of travelling the

“Maybe Next Semester…” Each semester I tell myself and anyone in the vicinity that has ears, “Okay, this is a fresh start. New subjects, teachers, boys to scope etc. I will buy/borrow/steal the textbooks and actually read them. I will stay up to date on my projects and make notes for my exams prior to the night before.” HA.

But don’t even try to lie, we’re all guilty of this biggest of lies to ourselves, because we think we’re awesome and great and fresh and new and will be able to resist when a stranger knocks on our door on a Tuesday night and asks if we want to go play beer pong. We know they’ll probably play by different rules (if the ball’s off the table, seriously guys, no trick shot) but hellz to the YEAH we want to play! Procrastination is a student’s favourite drug, next only to Adderall I suppose. I mean, I once saw a girl take Adderall just to get through a day that didn’t even involve homework. I’m going to stick to procrastinating, thanks. It’s cheaper.

My favourite form of procrastination has got to be mindless productivity. I can think of a million things that absolutely need to get done before I can even begin to think about cracking a book. Vacuuming my room, eating the contents of my fridge, going for a walk, organizing my inbox, looking at all of my tagged photos on Facebook… All very pressing and all completely necessary, because there’s no way I could focus on The 5 Ps of Marketing (at least I think there are 5) when I know that my underwear isn’t all folded and organized by type. So here we are, all sitting in the same sinking boat, contemplating literally any way to get out of that group meeting/8am class/leaving bed in general. I’m talking “Maybe I’ll change programs. Maybe I’ll move to Asia and live off the land. Maybe I’ll drop out and live on my mom’s couch forevs and forevs.” All are valid, and all have crossed my mind in the last 20 minutes or so. Alas, we must barrel through, trying not to slit our wrists with our cue cards, and inadvertently making new friends in the library at 3am... preferably the kind that share their study snacks and will teach you the newest and trendiest way to hide a cheat sheet in your underwear or WHEREVER. They suck, you suck, we all suck. Let’s get some pizza and do this case study some other time. So cheers to the beers we should probably be waiting for the weekend to drink, and better luck next semester!

CELEBRATE PRIDE AROUND THE WORLD THIS SUMMER 20SS: What is World Pride? Shiva Kanhai: World pride is the hugest celebration of the LGTB around the world! There are events daily for the entire week of June 20June 29, including parades, parties, shops, live bands including Melissa Etheridge! This celebration brings in family, friends, supporters and members of the LGBT from all over the world! 20SS: Who can come? SK: Anyone regardless of age, gender, orientation can come! It is a huge celebration that has activities for everyone. There is a family zone, a sober zone and of course many party options for those who would like to partake. SK: You can expect to see a wide range of diversity and people being happy with who they are! The streets will be painted, there will be decorations everywhere and it will be a great place to meet new friends and celebrate with the ones you already have. Like I said earlier, parades, parties, shops, live bands and so much more. Its hard to explain what you will experience if you decide to join us, but there is an amazing spirit and energy that you feel when you get there. 20SS: Where do I sign up? When is it? How much? Q: What inspires you to keep taking your music to a higher level? A: I had always wanted to pursue my music, but for many years I kept it on the back burner, mostly because it does take so much time, effort and energy, and the life of an artist is quite challenging. It takes a lot of courage as well, but I’ve taken a leap of faith.. Though, I have been on stage since I was 4, performing in school plays and such so it’s not that far of a stretch for me to fully step into the role of an artist. Music is something that has helped me get through some tough battles over the years, and it’s a healthy way to cope with any kind of pain. It astounds me that I feel so comfortable in front of huge crowds being completely raw and vulnerable with my music. People can relate to that, and the fact that I can create art, be genuine, share my experiences and be able to help people in that way is super inspiring. When I create and share music, I don’t feel alone. And the people listening to my music feel like they’re not alone. So it’s really a beautiful way to connect, it’s a dance of giving and receiving that lights me up. Q: Many people are aware that the music industry can be quite intense, what keeps you grounded and focused? A: I’m just stepping into being an official artist, and there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes both in the recording studio, the post processing, and even with paperwork and taking care of copyrights. This is really just the start of my music career, so it’s going to get more intense from here on out. But I’m as prepared as I can be, a lot of things in life are unexpected and we can choose to live in fear and not make any decisions or we can choose to go after what we love, and deal with what comes up as it comes up. I’m ready to dive in and I’m really grateful to have friends and family that keep me grounded. I have friends in this industry which really helps because not everybody understands what goes on in a business sense with music. I also like to have quality time alone to read, write, take relaxing walks, practice yoga etc. Taking care of myself and my health is really key to keeping my mind clear and focused. I’ve been learning that there’s a direct correlation between grounding and feeling into my physical body (ie through exercise) and feeling a sense of grounding and security in my mind. Q: Where can we find you on social media? A: I’m working on updating my official site right now justinegiles.com so that will be up and running very soon. You can also check out my facebook page, facebook.com/ justinegilesmusic to stay up to date with gigs and other exciting releases. And of course as I mentioned earlier, you can find my first single on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.

What made you move from being a solo artist to being part of a band?

Sudlebs www.20somethingsudbury.ca

Yeah, I used to perform as Jessy Brunette. I was playing the music scene and Steve Kraus sent me a message saying he really liked my music and he wanted me to come on CKLU. So I decided that would be fun, so we had a great time on his show, Six Degrees, and he asked me to jam. Ever since then we have jammed and then we decided to get serious about it and start a band. Tell me a little bit about the Stampeding Buffalo, and where the idea came from. Well, we are an alt country band. The name came from a coworker. I told him I was starting a band, and the first thing that came out of his mouth was ‘stampeding buffalo.’ I thought it was perfect, because Steve loves buffalos, and I am stamping all over the place. He is the buffalo. What are the next steps for Stampeding Buffalo? We are looking for more band members, a bass player and a drummer. It is hard to find in Sudbury, especially among musicians who want to play country. Also, we want people who want to work together as a band and not just make money, we do it because we love it. What is it about the Townehouse that makes it your favourite venue? I love the history here, so many of my favourite bands played here, like Blue Rodeo and Cuff the Duke. Everyone is Canadian music has played here, Stompin’ Tom Connors wrote Sudbury Saturday night here. It’s a very famous place, and my dad played here when he was younger so I’m a second generation musician here. I can be myself here. You have a special anniversary coming up with the Townehouse, could you tell us about it?

I’ve been playing shows at the Townehouse for nearly five years now. The first performance I played was an open stage put on by Matt Moskal, and it was the CKLU open stage. I still remember the first song I played. It was about sleeping with someone and wanting a relationship with them, but it didn’t work out. How did you become a regular musician at the Townehouse? Everytime I played here, I would play an original and two covers. I guess I impressed Paul Loewenberg, who owns the place. It took me a year and eight months to get a regular gig. I played the third Monday of every month usually. I’m filled with a lot of pride about that. I worked for it so hard, for so long. This place is the Grand Old Opry to me.

Program: Health Promotion Sport: Bodybuilding

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Name: Crystal Kenny

Lifestyle www.20somethingsudbury.ca

What got you into bodybuilding, how did you choose this sport? Initially I was doing my degree in police foundations and criminology. After having my first child at nineteen I decided that policing wasn’t going to work for me anymore. I still loved the aspect of being in shape for your job so I started working out at a gym; then I realized that I could take it to the next level. I became more passionate about it, and that’s when I came into health promotion and studying nutrition. What would you say has been the most challenging part of bodybuilding? Definitely balance. Bodybuilding can be obsessive to some degree. You get into it and you always want to keep up with everything. You always have to be planning, getting yourself out there and marketing yourself. So trying to balance that with school and family life is the biggest challenge. What advice would you give to someone who is looking to get started in bodybuilding? First of all, set some small goals. Research and educate yourself, talk to people that are in the industry; it’s really important. Always be aware, but don’t compare. Definitely don’t be looking at people and be thinking, I need to look like her - everybody is so different. At the end of the day it’s the judges’ decision; it’s not like you’re racing for the finish line, trying to beat a specific time. How do you stay focused and motivated? I set small goals. I’m always planning; I’m a list maker. However, I also try to make time to live in the now as opposed to too much planning. If you’re planning too much then you don’t get to enjoy the moment you’re in – you’re always thinking about the next moment. What do you consider to be the most important thing you have learned from bodybuilding? I’ve learned that you can accomplish anything as long as you’ve set a goal, you plan and you have the right support system. It takes a village to create an athlete and it helps to have people who have your back. Empowerment is also really important; this sport is all about empowerment, empowering other women and paying it forward. Which of your achievements are you most proud of? I did a Mommy Fit calendar for Right to Play with my kids last year. All the proceeds from the calendars went to Right to Play. It was nice to be able to be able to give back in that way.
