Industry Fave Where do you work? SRO Nightclub & Lounge. Favourite part of what you do: I love everything about the job and the service industry in general, from developing new and delicious Martinis to planning out a serious party. But I would have to say my favourite thing is putting a smile on people’s faces. I love to serve and through that medium, to be able to have a positive impact on someone’s life. The best thing in the world is to see the transformation from when a person walks in the door in need of fun, perhaps feeling the pressures of life or work, to when they leave after. It really does make my day to be able to make yours. Upcoming events at your work: We are hosting a serious Valentines Day party in conjunction with Spotted at Cambrian and Umentioned Laurentian!! It’s going to be Sudbury’s first interactive party with posts and comments being posted directly to our 180” Screen!! Something Interesting People Don’t Know About You: I’m a huge nerd and spreadsheet my ENTIRE life!! Craziest thing that has ever happened to you while working: That’s a hard one to answer as it seems like the craziness never ends…to say there’s just one wouldn’t be fair to all the other crazy candidates!!! Lets just say that bar life stays in a perpetual climate of organized chaos!! When you aren’t working, what can you be found doing? When I’m not at SRO I can be found teaching Muay Thai at Sudbury MMA!!!

UP THEATRE PRESENTS THE REASONS WE FIGHT TO PAY TRIBUTE TO HISTORIC ANNIVERSARY Our new Arts & Culture editor,Jessica Lovelace, caught up with Megan Kolppanen, Founder and Artistic Director of UP Theatre, to talk a bit about their upcoming production, The Reasons We Fight. 20SS: For those who don’t know about UP Theatre tell us a bit about the company. MK: UP Theatre is Sudbury’s only For-Charity Musical Theatre Company. With each production, UP Theatre pioneers new original productions, gives its participants a chance to be involved in

every aspect, and donates proceeds to great causes in Sudbury. 20SS: Your latest production The Reasons We Fight is an original, are all UP Theatre’s productions originals? What’s the process like? MK: Every production UP Theatre produces is all original. I’ve written all of the productions thus far, I start with an idea. This year I researched what upcoming anniversaries there were in 2014, and WWII stuck out big time. My process is an ever-changing one; still to this day in rehearsals we are changing little things to make the story better. I really couldn’t have done any of these shows without every one of my cast members. 20SS: Can you give us a synopsis of The Reasons We Fight? MK: The Reasons We Fight is a story of 4 women whose husbands have all gone off to the war; it is a story of how they have to continue in their everyday lives even though the biggest part of them is no longer around. These women bond over the simplest of things - going to tea every day. The story is set in London, England from June 1943 - June 1944 20SS: What else can we expect from UP Theatre this year? MK: UP Theatre will host our last Cabaret of the season April 26th at The Little Montreal, and our Spring Production Tiny Dancer runs May 29th - June 1st. We are also working on a Classical Concert, early spring. 20SS: Now that we know all about the production when/where is the show and where can we get tickets? MK: The Reasons We Fight runs February 13-15, 20-22 at 7pm at Sudbury Secondary’s Sheridan Auditorium. Tickets are $17/Adults, $15/Students & Seniors and $13/Children 13 & Under. You can purchase tickets by calling 705-562-7844, or by visiting www.uptheatre.com, or at the door!

REVIEW: GRAND NIGHTCLUB WHEN WALKING INTO THE NEWLY RENOVATED GRAND NIGHTCLUB MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS HOW SOMEHOW EVERYTHING LOOKED SO NEW AND FRESH. I SPENT A GOOD PART OF MY EVENING DOING DOUBLE TAKES AT ALL THE FIXTURES AND DECALS AND EXCITEDLY POINTING THEM OUT TO MY FRIENDS WHO WERE MUCH LESS IMPRESSED (APPARENTLY I WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO DIDN’T REMEMBER THESE DETAILS FROM BEFORE). AS I WAITED AT THE BAR I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THE CAGES IN ALL THEIR INFAMY WHERE NO LONGER THERE. HOW COULD A STAPLE OF SO MANY SHAMEFUL 19-YEAR-OLD BLURRED NIGHTS BE TAKEN AWAY? I WALKED ONTO THE DANCE FLOOR AND THERE SHE STANDS, ONLY NOW AS A CENTREPIECE HIGHLIGHTING DJ JACK3D (WHO WAS KILLING IT BY THE WAY) WHICH REALLY ADDED TO THE ATMOSPHERE. BETWEEN THE NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM, SCREENS, MORE SEATING OPTIONS (IF YOU NEED TO TAKE A BREAK FROM WALKING IN HEELS ALL NIGHT) AND OVERALL SPRUCING OF THE VENUE I GIVE THE NEWLY RENOVATED GRAND NIGHTCLUB A THUMBS UP! IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD A CHANCE TO CHECK OUT FUSE NIGHTCLUB (PREVIOUSLY COYOTES), WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GET ON IT. LIKE COYOTES, FRIDAY NIGHTS AT FUSE ARE FOR 19+ AND SATURDAY IS RESTRICTED FOR EVERYONE OVER 25.

20SS: You own The Gym, what influenced you to open your own gym? TT: Fitness has always been part of my life, ever since my first time going to a gym. When I was a 12 year-old boy, the moment I walked in there, I knew this is what I wanted to do, and where I wanted to be. 20SS: What is your fitness educational background? TT: Back in the day there wasn’t very much to study about this industry like there is today, so I took every possible program and course and read every piece of literature I could get my hands on. I’ve travelled to meet experts all around the world. People like Dorian Yates, Scott Abel, Arnold Louie Simons, Ronnie Coleman and even Dr. Scott Conley. 20SS: As a gym owner, what has been your biggest accomplishment? TT: My greatest accomplishment would be owning my own gym, I’ve wanted to be an owner since I was 12 years old. Another accomplishment would be being a coach and mentor, to influence and motivate people to be the best they can be – from soccer moms to professional athletes. With my T2 Training System, I am able to train anyone to reach their goal, whether they want to compete in bikini, figure, and bodybuilding or just look good. A few things I am proud of accomplishing in my life would be winning the Best Overall Man, becoming a member of the 300 bench club at 14 years old, All Ontario Heavy Weight in 2000 and also acquiring a gold medal at the World Junior Olympics for 4x100. 20SS: Who are your favourites in the fitness world? TT: Ron Hache, OPA President and former gym owner, fire fighter and body builder. My favourites are of course my T2 clients. 20SS: What do you like most about owning your own gym? TT: I love the atmosphere at the gym and the wonderful members we have. I enjoy being able to accommodate everyone and their fitness goals with our team here. Being able to help, change and influence people to be the best they can be, inside and outside the gym is really rewarding. Coming into work doesn’t feel like work, I love what I do. 20SS: What is next for fitness evolution? TT: T2 or Trained by Troy is expanding the gym and methods I’ve learned over the years to push the limits of this industry. T2 is a 30 minute workout customized for every individual. It consists of finding the perfect program suited for the individual and what their goals are. No matter your shape or size, T2 is designed and built for you. 20SS: When you aren’t at The Gym, what do you like to do? TT: I love watching football, spending time with friends and family. Driving my hummer, and always meeting new people and making new friends.

Adriana Roque 20SS: How did you get into photography?

20SS: Who are some photographers that inspire you?

AR: I got into photography back in high school. I joined the yearbook committee and it was my hobby more than anything. My sister and I always had crazy themed photo shoots at home. In grade 12 I decided to follow my passion to the Sault where I studied photography for three years.

AR: One of the photographers that inspire me would be Chase Jarvis. His work is very creative and one of a kind, he likes to go out of his box for that one great photograph. Another photographer that inspires me is Joel L; he is now 19 and one of the biggest photographers in the world. His personal work is breathtaking just looking at those images you want to change the way you live. I would also say my teachers and my classmates from college inspire me. Working beside them for three years, learning and growing from them, I’m very blessed to have that. I still keep in touch with them all so they do still inspire me.

20SS: You recently opened your own studio, how has the response been so far? AR: I just recently opened my own studio last month. The outcome has been great. This month is very slow since Christmas just ate everybody’s money so I’ve decided to do a mini shoot, which is a photo shoot but with special prices. Just so I can keep on shooting 20SS: Greatest accomplishment? AR: I actually have two big accomplishments; one was mainly graduating from college last April. It was a long three years in a classroom filled with amazing photographers, and teachers. To graduate from that is 100% hard to do. The second big accomplishment would be opening a studio at 22 years old I still feel so young to be opening my own business but I love being my own boss. 20SS: Is there any hidden photography gems in Sudbury? AR: There are a lot of different hidden photography spots in Sudbury, but any place can be a beautiful spot for a photo shoot. To be honest, you can set up 50 photographers that are based in Sudbury in one spot and tell them to shoot the same thing and edit it and in one hour show the world what you have done, and I promise you those 50 photographers will have 50 different styles of the same object or model. That’s what I love about photography you can be creative, and some people might hate it, but others might love it. 20SS: How would you describe your photography style? AR: I love shooting series. I love making a huge difference in the world. Yes I shoot families and weddings and so on, but my personal photography shows who I am as a photographer more than doing normal work with clients. I love telling a story, in your face out comes of my photography.

20SS: Photography goals? What do you hope to accomplish? AR: My photography goal is to open a bigger studio that has more space so I can rent out some space to other people who would like to be a photographer but have nowhere to do their photography. I would also love to have my own gallery all year round in Sudbury. Where I can put up my personal photography and have a little space for others to post their photography with no catch and no waiting list. 20SS: Plans for the future AR: I have a gallery opening in April at the library in the South End. I hope everybody can come out and support the Gallery. I also have many plans for the future, new fresh ways to help Sudbury grow with artists and photographers. Website: www.adrianaroquephotography1.redframe.com Facebook: Adriana roque photography Contact: adrianaroquephotography@hotmail.com studio: 2008 Lasalle Boulevard, Sudbury on (studio right across from good life fitness) studio Number: 705.805.0992 leave a voice mail with your name and number if I’m out of the studio thank you.

20SS: Favorite types of photos to take? AR: To be honest, I don’t have just one favorite; I enjoy doing any type of photography that comes my ways. I like a challenge.

THE SEXIEST THING YOU CAN DO IN THE BEDROOM

You’ve just picked up a hottie at the bar, or maybe you’re involved in a new relationship; either way, things are moving quickly. You feel a twinge of nervousness; you want your interactions in the bedroom to be nothing short of spectacular. You want to impress your partner – so what is the sexiest thing you can do in the bedroom? The Problem The Sudbury and District Health Unit (SDHU) has recently reported that Sudbury is experiencing growing rates of sexually transmitted infections, primarily chlamydia and gonorrhea. Furthermore, the SDHU reports that the 20-24 year old age group has the highest incidence rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea infections of all age groups. A recent report by the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada revealed that fifty percent of sexually active college students aren’t using condoms. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the leading causes of preventable morbidity. Preventing the spread of a sexually transmitted infection can be as easy as effectively using a condom; however many twentysomethings are simply choosing not to use condoms. Many twenty-something’s have been lulled into false sense of immunity; their perceptions of risk have been skewed leading them to believe their chances of contracting a STI is quite low. Others choose not to use condoms thinking that the risks associated with contracting a STI are low; this is simply not true. While some STIs are very treatable, failing to use a condom can increase risk for more serious long-term consequences such as: HIV, hepatitis, infertility or an unplanned pregnancy. The Solution It’s time to move past preconceptions about condom use. Twenty-something’s need to be proactive in protecting their health. Insistence on using a condom should not be insulting to one’s sexual partners; rather it should be commended. The sexiest thing you can do in the bedroom is to make the responsible and considerate choice to use a condom; safe sex is sexiest.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Name: Samantha Demers, 21 Hometown: timmins, Ontario Degree/Year: 3rd Year Sports and Physical Education Sport: Laurentian University Varsity Wrestling

20SS: Why did you chose wrestling, what influenced you to get into it? SD: It’s actually kind of a funny story. In high school my locker was next to a guy who was on the wrestling team, and I was on the track and field team. He thought wrestling was harder and I thought track was harder; so we each bet that the other couldn’t make it through three practices of the other sport. When I tried wrestling I really enjoyed it and I’ve been doing it ever since. 20SS: Who is your biggest role model, in or out of sports and why? SD: My dad is my biggest role model. I guess it’s because he always pushed me to go farther and he has always been there for me. He has always wrestled with me and pushed me to do better in sports. 20SS: What are your plans for the future? SD: Right now my plans are to graduate next year from Sports and Physical Education. After that, I plan on working in some aspect of fitness and health as a career. 20SS: Can you name a couple things that you think have contributed to your success? SD: I’ve had good coaches, which has definitely been a huge help. My parents have also been a key factor, they’ve always supported me. Beyond that just working hard and having determination has been important. 20SS: What is your favourite thing to do in Sudbury? SD: I like doing anything outdoors: fishing, cross country skiing, biking, and snowshoeing. I love the outdoors and am glad I can still enjoy these activities in Sudbury while I’m at school.
