New Year, New Style!
2013 was a great year for fashion, but it looks like 2014 is going to be just as, if not more, stylish and fun! Here are our tips to edit your wardrobe for the New Year. 1. Organize - If you’re anything like us, your bedroom probably doubles as a walk-in closet. What better way to see what you have than folding, hanging and organizing? Fold jeans, knitted sweaters and thin cardigans (to prevent stretching!), and hang blazers, jackets, shirts, and dresses. A closet organizer is your best friend! 2. Review - Now that your closet is organized you’ll be able to see what areas need attention. 20 dresses but only 1 pair of jeans? Monochromatic wardrobe? Consider all of this so you can… 3. Edit - Enlists some friends to help you decide what does and doesn’t work. Try everything on (yes, everything) and create “Yes”, “No”, and “Maybe” piles to sort it all out. 4. Donate - You’re a fashionista; anyone would be thrilled to own even one item from your wardrobe! Look at what you haven’t worn in the last year or what doesn’t fit to decide what is no longer necessary. 5. Play - Make the most of your fabulous wardrobe; break out that new blazer, buy that perfect pair of heels to match and try out some new fashion trends!

The Almighty Rhombus band of the month The Almighty Rhombus’ description of themselves: The Almighty Rhombus is a rock ‘n rollin’, beer drinkin’, bottle smashin’, heart throbbin’, J smokin’, coffee drinkin’, doughnut eatin’ pop band from Sudbury. Being from Sudbury this is pretty easy to picture. After releasing their self-titled EP in 2012, The Almighty Rhombus just released their first full-length LP, Lucid Living on October 29th through Cosmic Dave’s Recording Factory. The LP full of poprock jams does not disappoint. From being featured on NME and LostInTheSound, to being hailed as ‘pop-rock renegades’ by Rokline, these boys can only keep progressing to new heights. We caught up with A.R. to pick their brains on a few topics. 20SS: First things first. How did The Almighty Rhombus come about? Carter: Mike and I met whilst wading through the magical forests of high school. A common lack of interest in wood working drew us to the critically acclaimed Lasalle teacher, Mr. Lucano’s office, where he’d quiz us on music trivia. He’d ask us questions like, “what dynamic duo had the smash hit ‘bad boys’ in 1983?” The answer is Wham! I feel this training was integral to our band’s formation. Lucano to the Almighty Rhombus is like Chuck Berry to the Beatles. It shaped us. That and liking similar bands, like the Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age and Attack in Black. We started our first band together with our friend Ryan in grade 10, it was called Beam Cannon. At some point Mike started writing pop tunes that were a little outside the realm of what we wanted to do with Beam Cannon, so we started a new band with the same members, initially called just Rhombus. When my older brother Clayton caught wind of it, he muscled his way in, and soon after that Neil and Cameron were on bass and guitar duties. Since then things have been much more serious; we added the Almighty to our name, made t shirts, got matching tattoos, share clothes, walk the dog together, bake cakes together, y’know... We’re pretty TIGHT. 20SS: What’s it like having a bunch of family members in the band? Any home cooking from mom? Any Fights? Mike: Is it tedious having a famjam unit in the band? It can be. We’re all good friends though and it always ends up being a positive/constructive working environment. The only thing cooking is our skulls after ripping cones and doobies. No fights to report as of yet, we’re the five boyfriends. page

20SS: Your new LP Lucid Living just dropped. It definitely has a different feel than your EP. Could you guys explain the process, and why you decided to switch it up? Clayton: The idea behind Lucid Living is that people will be drawn in initially by the melodies and hooks, but we made sure to include a lot of subtleties in the mixing and arrangements that astute listeners will pick up on and that, I think, casual listeners will just feel. For instance, we recorded onto the same tapes that our pals Coast Redwood used when they recorded their EP. There were some artifacts left over from their recording session that you can hear clearly in two incidences on our album if you pay close attention. Of all the albums I’ve ever released, this is the first time I’ve felt like there were no more changes I wanted to make when the mixing process was complete. Our co-producer and engineer Chris Forth was a huge part of helping to achieve this vision, and this album wouldn’t be the same without his astute ear, creative ideas and insane work ethic. The main differences between the EP and the full length? Time, maturity, experience and ambition. The artwork, song arcs, title, everything fits together really tightly. I’m very proud of this release. 20SS: Tell us a bit about The Big Basement Show! Clayton: First off, people need to understand that to miss the Big Basement Show is to miss the most important cultural event in Sudbury in most of your readers’ adult lives. You need to come to this show. I can’t express how excited I am for the Big Basement Show. It’s going to be f*cking dope. Straight up. All of the bands are astoundingly good, and I can hardly believe we were able to pull together such an insane lineup. We are doing our best to make this thing look and feel like a large basement party, complete with your drunken dad telling you to keep it down and two fully-featured living rooms. I could write more about it, but ultimately you all need to trust that The Almighty Rhombus is going to deliver you a concert going experience the likes of which you’ve never felt before. People need to buy their tickets NOW cause it will sell out. Physical tickets are currently on sale at Cosmic Dave’s Record Factory on Kathleen Street. Get yours before Jan. 1st and enjoy the early bird price of $25 for 20 bands! Just search “Big Basement Show” on Facebook to find out more. We’ll be announcing two bands every week until the end of December so keep your eyes peeled! The Spotlight www.20somethingsudbury.ca
20SS: Who is behind Let’s Scrabbalatte Board Game Café? Erik and Lawrence Van Beek. 20SS: What kind of experience can we expect from Let’s Scrabbalatte Board Game Café? The games are what are special. Customers have access to a table and the entire game library for a $6 admission, tax included. The rest works like a café: we serve custom espresso and steamed milk drinks (lattes, cappuccinos, and more); we serve organic coffee and organic and fair trade loose leaf teas; our desserts are freshly made, never factory by a certified red seal pastry chef. 20SS: Where did this idea come from? A few ideas made up the business: Cash Flow (the board game by Robert Kiyosaki), our passion for board games, Snakes and Lattes in Toronto, and making a smart move in the current economy.
page
14
20SS: How has the response been so far? Absolutely fabulous. All smiles. Facebook went crazy and the feedback we are getting from customers is proof that the simple yet unique café idea has what it takes to live up to the hype for years to come. 20SS: You have more than 300 board games, how did you decide which ones to bring in? Will you be bringing in new ones? We brought in ones we love and ones we know people love. Table Top, the YouTube board game entertainment channel starring Wil Wheaton is a hub for all of us. All the Table Top games are super popular. We have the classics and the contemporary. Our collection is definitely expanding. We bring in new games all of the time and customer feedback has much say in what we get. 20SS: Favourite board games? Hero Quest for Erik. Cash Flow for Lawrie.
The Spotlight www.20somethingsudbury.ca
20SS: You also serve food and beverages, what kind of food and drink can we find in the Café? (Do you serve takeout coffee/tea, food to go etc.?) When it is busy, you have to buy an admission wristband in order to sit at a table, but you never have to buy admission if you just want to grab a drink or snack to go. We have a creative and unique selection of foods: chips, chocolate bars, candy, popcorn, cereal, desserts, sandwiches, pop tarts, dunkaroos, fruit by the foot, and evening pizza options. Drinks mentioned above. 20SS: What kinds of events will you be hosting? Over the next year, people can expect to see theme nights, tournaments, mixers, family nights, ladies’ nights, charity events, events involving other community organizations, live music, make your own board game nights, and more. 20SS: Anything you would like to add? It is all ages. We have served numerous families, and as well seniors. There is something for everyone. It is a melting pot in the café. The board games bring people together in a way that not much else can right now. Gender, age, race, social status, financial status, sexual orientation, physical condition, and mental condition are all acknowledged in the space and are appreciated on more levels than we have ever seen in Sudbury. All different types of people are playing
together and the games act as a social lubricant, bringing people together in a very real way. Many new friendships will be made in the café. It is like adding a friend on Facebook, getting to know them and then becoming friends in real life. Except, this way is much less risky and real friendships develop 10-100x faster. 20SS: Any plans for the future of Let’s Scrabbalatte Board Game Café? Well Lawrie wants a documentary crew in there. That’s another conversation though. People can expect more and more refining of the services we provide. The game library will continue to expand. Let’s Scrabbalatte Board Game Café 66 Elm Street 705-674-8888

20SS: What inspired you to get into hip hop and performing? JB: The first time I was exposed to hip hop I was hooked. As a child, the whole culture just put the zap on me. 20SS: What is your favourite scene or venue to perform? JB: I love performing anywhere with a crowd. Speakeasy is a great spot because it’s got a very intimate feel to it.

Johnny B
20SS: Who are some of your favourite artists/influences? JB: Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Biggie, 2pac, Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest. Present artists: Schoolboy Q, Joey Badass 20SS: What is your typical Sudbury Saturday night? JB: A typical Stompin’ Tom Connors Sudbury Saturday Night to me is getting together with some friends at Peddler’s Pub for a couple brews and live music. 20SS: What are your plans for the future? JB: I have a couple videos in the works and I’m planning on throwing down a video release party sometime in early 2014. Until PRIMETIME Pt. 2 comes out this summer, I’m looking to release some new material with my new DJ/ beat maker Uian Fenton aka UZ. I also plan on collaborating with more local artists this year. 20SS: What is your most memorable experience as a musician? JB: My cd release weekend was probably the most memorable experience. Just being able to perform at all my favorite bars and help promote some new downtown business (Black Apple Studio, the Seven 0’ Five) was a great opportunity for me. The response was amazing. 20SS: What is your favourite thing about Sudbury? JB: Sudbury is a tough city with tough people. We’re still behind the times but act like we’re ahead of the game and that’s what I love. The downtown core is full of great musicians and great businesses who actually care about the progress of our city. 20SS: What are your interests outside of music? JB: I only have three passions in life; music, food and women. 20SS: If you could pick the song to play at your funeral, what would you want it to be? JB: Hypnotize by Biggie Smalls. (You heard it here; I don’t want any cheesy ass depressing funeral music to be played upon my death) 20SS: What was the first piece of music (cd/vinyl/cassette) you bought? JB: Cassette - Nirvana-nevermind. CD - Wu Tang Clan-36 chambers. Vinyl - Gangstarr-Full Clip Lp 20SS: Tell us a bit about your latest CD release, PRIMETIME. JB: PRIMETIME is basically a look into my life during my mid-twenties; the glitz and glamor, the rags to riches, the anxiety of growing up. It’s about a man trying to find himself in this chaotic world of sex, drugs and social disarray.

20SS: What influenced you to open your own studio? AL: I come from a very entrepreneurial family, so I have always known I was going to be my own boss one day. Working for someone else was never an option in my head. I simply took my passion and made it into my career. I’m definitely grateful that this opportunity came to me six years ago. I know that some people switch jobs three to seven times before they’re able figure out what they really enjoy doing. I’m lucky to have found what I’m happy doing on my first try. I’ll never take that for granted. 20SS: What is your dance/educational background? AL: Feels like I’ve been dancing my whole life. I started dancing at the age of 6 at the Ida Sauve Dance Studios. I trained with Ida until I graduated high school and I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of her teachers in training. The teachers’ training was a two year process. I had more notes in dancing than I did homework in high school. I told Ida that one day I wanted to take over her studio but I needed to go to school first and get an education. I went to Wilfred Laurier University and Conestoga College and when I graduated from Communications and Business Management I felt I was ready. It has now been six years since I bought Miss Ida’s studio and I haven’t looked back once. 20SS: As a studio owner, what has been your greatest accomplishment? AL: My greatest accomplishment as a studio owner was being able to watch some of the most shy and timid young dancers turn into beautiful confident young ladies or men. It’s crazy to think about it, but I have been teaching dance for over 13 years now, so some of my beginner dancers are now graduating from high school! In many sports your coaches always change, I get to watch all my dancers grow from toddlers to teenagers.
20SS: Who are your favourites in the dance world? AL: I think you’re looking for a professional name here, but the truth is, my favorites in the dance world are the 2 and 3 year olds in their first year of dance. They say and do the funniest things! I get to say things like, don’t lick the mirrors and save all your hugs for the end of the class! 20SS: What do you like most about owning and running your dance studio? AL: The best part by far is being able to share your passion with hundreds of kids. There are also the normal benefits of being your own boss. Making your own schedule and not having to report to anyone. The career wouldn’t be the same without all the amazing families we have at our studio. We truly have something special going on. Everyone is proud of one another and we have a really happy atmosphere. My faculty members and dancers are like my family and everyone works so well together.
20SS: What is next for Dance Evolution? AL: This month we’ve just launched our third location in the Valley. We’re really excited to be able to bring Dance Evolution closer to families which will make it more convenient for families in these outlying communities. We have a great product to give and a very family oriented atmosphere. Some people spend more time in the car getting to and from the studio than they do actually dancing at the studio. If people are willing to drive in from Markstay, Onaping Falls, Manitoulin Island etc... for an hour dance class, then why not bring the classes to them to allow more families in their communities to enjoy the benefits of dance. We will be launching our fourth location in the Summer of 2014! 20SS:When you aren’t dancing, what is something you enjoy doing? AL: I’m a true Sudbury girl, you can find me enjoying my summers on the lake at camp. On my time off, if I’m not at the lake I am most likely travelling the world. I’ve been to 25 countries so far and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Some people save up for a house. I save up for my next trip. page

no excuse winter workout Getting to the gym can be a challenge at times! A busy schedule can leave you pressed for time. To make matters worse, frigid Sudbury weather and treacherous road conditions can leave you stuck at home. Fortunately, we’ve come up with a routine you can perform at home with absolutely no equipment – for those days when making it to the gym just isn’t possible. The following exercises should be performed as a circuit. Perform five to twelve repetitions of each exercise to complete one circuit. Repeat the circuit as necessary according to your goals and fitness level. Shoulder Press Push Up Begin in the “A” position shown. Bend your elbows until your head is just above the ground, then push up until your arms are fully extended. Lower slowly to starting position. Repeat. Wide Grip Push Up Begin in push up position with hands roughly three feet apart. Push your body up using your arms until they are fully extended. Slowly lower your body until your face almost touches the ground. Repeat. Dynamic Plank Begin in standard plank position with your forearms on the ground. Push up with your right arm until it is fully extended; then push up with your left arm until it is also fully extended. Lower your right side, until your right forearm rests on the ground in the starting position; then lower your left side, bending your left arm until it rests on the ground in starting position. Repeat alternating your starting side. Leg raises Begin on your back with your hands to your sides for support. Slowly raise your legs off the ground until they form a 90 degree angle with your back. Slowly return to starting position, without allowing your feet to touch the ground; repeat. Supermans Lay on your stomach with your arms fully extended in front of you. Simultaneously raise your arms, legs, and chest off of the floor and hold this position for two seconds. Slowly lower your limbs to the floor. Repeat. Lunges Begin standing with your feet shoulder width apart. Step forward with one leg; lower yourself until your back knee almost touches the ground. Extend both knees to raise your body to a standing position. Step forward with your back foot, repeating this sequence with the opposite leg.

Athlete of the Month Name: Celine Loyer, 24 Hometown: Chelmsford, Ontario Sport: Indoor 50m/60m Outdoor 100m, 200m sprints
20SS: Why sprinting? How did you get into this sport? CL: I had always gravitated to sports in general. When I was in grade 11, my high school coach realized I had potential and asked me if I would be interested in working with a worldclass sprint coach. I decided it was something I wanted to do and made a commitment to dedicate myself to sprinting and train all year round. That was when I began training permanently and professionally. 20SS: Who is your biggest role model or inspiration in or out of sports, and why? CL: My coach, David, without him I wouldn’t be in this sport. And my family – they never questioned whether I should be doing this. They always told me to follow my dreams. Also Narada Michael Walden; he is a hard worker and has accomplished great things. He’s funny, a wicked drummer and a great supporter.
And You Thought Exercise was Boring How many of you want to get in shape, but dread the idea of going to the gym and putting up reps on the machines? I feel the same way. The whole concept of a repetitive routine has been keeping me out of the gym (and out of top notch shape) for years. Last week, I found what I have been looking for. Team Shredder! Located behind Part Source, on Lorne St., Team Shredder Martial Arts has a circuit training program that has been whooping my ass for a week. Before last week, I considered myself to be in fairly decent shape. This illusion came crumbling down when I completed my first session. The circuit involved nine stations, ranging from burpies, to slamming and picking up a medicine ball, to pushing a weighted sled across the gym floor. The circuit started at twenty seconds per station, and incrementally increased to fourty-five, before dropping back down to twenty. If you’ve never wanted to die before, the twenty second mark of a fourty-five second session pushing 150 pounds across the gym floor will make you want to collapse on the spot. But that’s where Chris Oliver comes in. Him and his colleagues don’t let you quit. The second you stop, they’re there to pick you up and push you to persevere, and blast through the proverbial “wall.” I’ll be honest, when I strolled in for my first session, I thought it was going to be walk in the park. I mountain bike, snowboard, skateboard, trampoline, cliff jump, rock climb, and any other extreme activity I can, so I thought that I would be able to handle a couple of pushups and burpies. No, no. The way the circuit is designed (it’s different every time) and the minimal breaks throughout the hour-long session make life extremely difficult. After my first session, I was trembling on my walk to the car. I just got home from my second session, and it’s near impossible to keep my arms extended to finish this article haha.
20SS: You are a registered massage therapist – tell me about how you balance work with training. CL: People think I’m crazy! I always had the mindset that education wasn’t an option and so I pursued an education in massage therapy. My main focus is on training right now, but I’m balancing my career as well. I train five hours a day and I see patients in the afternoon. Having a life outside of training and working helps too. 20SS: Can you name a couple of things you think have contributed to your success? CL: Perseverance, just pushing through the hard times and never quitting or giving up. Having patience has helped too, especially in dealing with injuries. Trusting my coaching and having confidence in what he is doing has been key. I also wouldn’t be where I am without my corporate sponsors. They have been a huge part of my career and I would like to thank them greatly. 20SS: What do you like to do in Sudbury? What do you like to do when you aren’t training? CL: I like to make people laugh and I like to joke. I also like to eat! I love the Food Network and cooking. I am very meticulous about my cooking. What do I like to do in Sudbury? I like playing pool, bowling and dancing. I really like a DJ that can make you dance. 20SS: What is your proudest accomplishment in or out of sports, and why? CL: I am proud that I was able to complete my education while training. It was very challenging at times, but I am proud I was able to balance both and graduate with honors from massage therapy. 20SS: What are your plans for the future? Any specific goals you are working towards? CL: Everyone always brings up the Olympics and that is a possibility but there are also many other competitions I am training for. Right now I’m working on my brand while training. I want to be known for what I do in sport as well as in my career. I would like to be the massage therapist of the stars one day.
So to all people who have been telling yourselves to buff up a little and get in better shape but don’t want to hit the gym, Team Shredder is for you. The circuits are fun, the atmosphere is not intimidating and the team is extremely motivating. I have a honeymoon in Costa Rica in less than a month. What’s your motivation?
