K.Karma (aka) Joey King

20SS: Who are your influences? JK: Jimi Hendrix, Tupac, Marvin Gaye, Tracy Chapman, Amanda Marshall & Vado 20SS: If you could compare yourself to an already established artist who would that be and why? JK: I’d safely say J. Cole, for the blend of Soul & Rap within his body of art. 20SS: What do you hope to do with your music? JK: With time I hope to tour the world, at the moment I plan on expanding my skills and growing as an artist on an educational level. I have a seat in my program of choice starting this September at Cambrian College; I will be developing my production skills more so with Independent Music Production, a 1-year course. From there, I’m looking to establish my own professional studio, which will be available to the public, enabling the growth for all genres of music in Northern Ontario. 20SS: What is something people don’t know about you? JK: When I was only a couple months old I was pronounced dead due to lung failure, traveled to the hospital all blue and was revived. Then once again another lung failure when I was still under a year old, luckily I was already hospitalized at the time for a hernia and asthma attacks, I lived in a bubble haha 20SS: When did you write your first track and what was the title? JK: My first track, hmmm the title I honestly couldn’t remember, I wrote a lot of battle raps and poetry before I sat down and focused on song writing. But I know I was around 10, I remember being 8 or 9 bumping Wu-Tang’s : Enter The 36 Chambers album, and my Mom would always have to yell at me to turn it off by the time her show “Sliders” started. 20SS: Favourite song on your latest album? JK: “Just Let Me Be” off “Happiness” EP featuring: Pierre Cook & Ellie [Prod.By.Pierre Cook & K.Karma/Written.By.K.Karma]

page

20SS: Do you have any upcoming events or collaborations that you are excited about this year? JK: I have a Much Music captioned video to go shoot in Ottawa at the end of this month for my upcoming album “ 1996 “, no certainty on release date yet. But it will be available on I-Tunes when the time comes, with a proper campaign built around it, thanks to my big bro Doug Bright, one of my mentors and current business partners for my Northern Union branding. 20SS: What do you like to do when you’re not in the studio? JK: I’m only human, so spending time with family and friends is a must. But I enjoy being alone, listening to old records and classic tracks from my youth days, brings back memories. I get some cardio in daily, a lot of writing; beyond the studio I like poetry and free writing. I watch a lot of movies on down time and squeeze in some video games when I can. 20SS: What do you hope to do with your music? JK: I hope to travel the world, spread my message, and share my thoughts and feelings with the globe. 20SS: What made you want to get into the music industry? JK: I was pulled into the music side of things young, but the industry itself scared me growing up, honestly. Watching a lot of legends pass with no answers, left me cautious to jump at it. But within the last couple years more or less, I’ve felt like I have no choice mentally & emotionally. I’m built for the stage, built to socialize through hectic events and built to write, lucky enough to be a voice for my city at times already. youtube.com/NdotTeLeViSiON Facebook: Joey King (Joey Karma) Instagram: karmaisking OFFICIAL K.KARMA WEBSITE COMING SOON.

Industry Fave www.20somethingsudbury.ca

Industry Fave Where do you work? The Fromagerie on Elgin. Favorite part of what you do? I love the people I work with. I really enjoy informing customers about the cheeses we carry, where they’re from, and how it’s made. I also like the artistic aspect of putting together cheese platters. Something interesting people don’t know about you. I love making pottery. I’ve been doing it for seven years now, but I’ve been really busy this past year and haven’t had time to work on anything new. When you aren’t working what can you be found doing? I’m usually downtown somewhere enjoying live music. Or, working with friends on creative projects like upcoming burlesque shows, photo shoots, and short films. Best tip you’ve ever received. I had a regular customer when I was working in Toronto, she was a lovely lady, and sometimes she would tip me with books. It may seem strange, but I loved it.

blog! * Camping 101 Let’s just clarify that when I say “camping” I mean real camping. None of this “4-6 financial district wannabe brosiffs with a case of Corona and a GoPro at their parent’s cottage in Muskoka, taking a bunch of fun pics for their Tinder profiles.” I’m talking about the kind of camping where you wake up with a tree root sticking into your back because you thought you’d ball out and bring an air mattress but didn’t realize it was the one with the leak. The kind of camping that leaves dirt under your fingernails and bug bites on your ass.

2) There’s no such thing as too many hot dogs. They make a good breakfast. They make a good lunch. They make a good “Hey I Haven’t Had a Hotdog In a While” snack. They’re cheap, they’re quick. You can share them with friends and make inappropriate jokes about their phallic nature. Bonus points for bringing condiments and cheese. Extra bonus points for bringing bacon.

I consider any camping trip that doesn’t involve someone getting badly injured, someone throwing up in a tent (especially mine) or having to set up/tear down your tent in the rain a booming success. So I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to these excursions. I don’t find there to be much more to complain about when I’ve so willingly stranded myself many moons from my comfortable bed to “embrace the outdoors,” and by outdoors I mean 5,000 bloodthirsty mosquitos, a long journey to a faraway tree every time I need to pee, and 2-3 nights with a band of drunken nincompoops.

3) Bring the right people. I can’t emphasize enough how easily a good trip can be ruined by the wrong people. Not everyone’s going to be camping-compatible with you (and that’s just fine), so make sure to bring people who aren’t going to poop on your party. Small trips call for the very best of friends, but once the trip gets big enough that people can group off and do their own thing it’s fair game and you’re free to go ahead and invite your mailman/drug dealer/local hobo/etc.

That being said, I will now offer my spectacularly expert advice on how to really get the most of your real camping experience. 1) Bring Ice. Like a buttload of ice. Like maybe leave one of your friends at home so you can use their spot in the car/boat to pack more ice. Everyone wants to drink beer while their camping, but no normal human being wants it to be warm. Gotta keep dem brewskis cold somehow, and trust me, a snubbed bff is far more forgiving than a belly full of warm PBR. page

10

4) For the love of God, charge your phones. Charge them twice. Bring a generator just to charge them. I’m not concerned with being able to make calls/text; what do I care about is if you lose an arm or a leg because you had no way to call for help? I can assure you, however, that you’re going to be really upset when you lose the ability to take pictures of your aforementioned drunken nincompoop friends when they’re running around naked or sitting in front of the most perfect sunset because your iPhone is dead in the tent. Make sure you’re at a hundo-p before you leave, and definitely invest in one of those portable chargers!

WHAT’S THE BUZZ WITH YES THEATRE IN JULY? In 2013 Sudbury’s YES Theatre brought us a phenomenal production of Jesus Christ Superstar, we caught up with founder Alessandro Costantini to talk about the show. 20SS: This is a remounting of the 2013 performance, what made you want to do it again this year? AC: Well, last year Jesus Christ Superstar was our biggest success to date. It blew people away, I think because of the depth of the performances and the scope of the production. After it closed I was getting emails from people saying that they wished they had seen it but couldn’t get tickets in time. We’re giving Sudbury another chance to come and drink it in.

20SS: For those who are not familiar with JCS give us the plot. AC: It’s the story of Jesus of Nazareth’s last few days before his crucifixtion, as told in the Bible. But rather than being a ‘passion play’, you get to see Christ’s story from the perspectives of the people surrounding him, especially Judas Iscariot. You get to hear everyone’s private thoughts on the matter and understand how they feel about Jesus’ fame.

20SS: What else does YES have coming over the summer? AC: We have SO much planned! Our fifth-season production of In the Heights kicks off in August and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever done. Leading up that we’ll be doing many public performances around the city, starting with the Relay for Life (June 20), as well as the city’s Canada Day celebrations, plus expect to see us opening the Market on June 28th. YES will also, for the first time, be holding a one week acting workshop for students in July.

20SS: Where can I find more information? Photographer: Tarari Anthony

Where can I get tickets? AC: All info can be found on our website, www.yestheatre.com. There you can buy tickets, sign up for our newsletter and become a YES subscriber. You can also call the Sudbury Theatre Centre for tickets at 705-674-8381. It’s an exciting time for the city, we hope to see everyone this summer.

They have three unique Caesars – The Beefy Caesar – made with Beefeater Gin, this Caesar was our Publishers favourite of the three. Olive juice and garlic stuffed olives gave this a unique flavor.

MADE BY: Kate Laface

This Caesar is HUGE. Garnished with lemons, limes and olives that they import from Spain, we definitely recommend checking it out.

Most unique flavour!

We tried three of Casey’s amazing caesars. The Classic, the Smokehouse and we were lucky enough to try one of Casey’s newest Caesars, the Cucumber Caesar.

Crunchy pickles are the key to a good garnish. Oscar’s pickles passed that test. This Caesar was made with tequila and just the right amount of spice. Perfect size and a very good presentation. MADE BY: Michael Milad

The HourGlass If you haven’t been to the HourGlass yet, we definitely recommend checking it out. Made with Finlandia vodka, this Caesar was another classic. The olive and lime garnishes were great and the rim was really good.

Caseys Classic Caesar: made with Smirnoff vodka and garnished with a spicy bean.

Cucumber Caesar: Get over there right now and check it out! If you want a refreshing patio drink, this is the one for you. Garnished with cucumbers, it really was the most unique Caesar of our taste test tour. This Caesar wins for being the most unique!

Most unique garnish!

The Beezer: If you like caesars but are getting tired of the typical Clamato juice and spices, this Caesar is for you. Mixed with Molson Canadian, the combination is out of this world.

The Backyard BBQ Caesar – if you are a whiskey drinker, this Caesar is for you. Made with the right amount of spice and garnished with bacon. The Feisty Ole Cesar – Buzzys has a Caesar for everyone. MM: Cleaning, eating and spending time with my family. 20SS: What first got you into cooking and when did you first start? MM: Food got me into cooking! I have loved food since my first delicious bite of my mother’s cooking. I wanted to cook just like her! 20SS: What is your favourite dish to eat? To cook? Sudlebs www.20somethingsudbury.ca 20SS: What inspired you to teach yoga? ER: Yoga kicked my ass and when I found hot yoga 7 years ago in Australia, I loved how every component in fitness was targeted through just one class. I also saw a business opportunity instructing something I love - Yoga and all types of fitness. 20SS: What can you be found doing around town when you’re not teaching yoga? ER: I love Sudbury Summers on the lakes, even just being out everywhere, shopping, restaurants, pubs and clubs. In the winter I like to hibernate and leave this cold country. 20SS: What is something people don’t know about you? ER: I’m one of 6 children and my father is one of 17 children...WILD!!! Oh and I have 14 nieces and nephews. 20SS: What are you really excited about doing this summer? ER: Being in Sudbury and on the lakes. I never want to leave Sudbury in the summer as I really enjoy the happiness in everyone when the sun is out. Winter comes and I’m outta here! 20SS: How many years have you been teaching and where can people find your classes? ER: I’ve been a personal trainer for 9 years and instructing yoga for 4 years. You can find a variety of yoga and fitness classes at zenlife.ca 20SS: Research shows that yoga can improve sex, orgasms and premature ejaculation what is your opinion about the benefits of yoga? ER: Wow!!! Sexxxyyy. I guess increased flexibility could make things fun? Just like any other form of physical activity, yoga will improve stamina, and better flow. Maybe with the focus needed in yoga you learn to control and move with your breath. I guess feeling in control and confident will enhance your sex life… I expect 20 Something Sudbury readers to sign up after reading that statement! 20SS: What is the ratio of girls to guys that attend your classes? ER: I would say 20% of the membership is men, which is way too low. Possibly a little outdated? In Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and many other large cities there are tons of guys that do yoga. I encourage more men to come to classes because they are most commonly the ones that need increased flexibility. 20SS: What types of yoga do you prefer? ER: Hot Yoga is the majority of my classes. We have pole dancing and I find myself super impressed when a dancer can walk around in crazy high heels then flip upside down on a pole holding herself up with her right knee like whhhhaaaaaaaattttttt?!?! I LOVE hot yoga, I like our wall and aerial yoga but I’m very interested in Acro Yoga.

sudleb

Edwina Rudolph Owner of Zen fitness

20SS: The Guinness World Record lists an 85 year old Australian woman to be the oldest yoga teacher do you think you’ll be teaching as long as possible? ER: The 85-year-old yogi is amazing! Sometimes I feel people are naturally gifted with insane flexibility. I love yoga and am good at guiding a class, but I’m by no means a pretzel. I do hope to be good and healthy and feel that yoga would be the best option for all of us to keep our range of motion, balance and to avoid muscle tightening that naturally occurs. I would like to teach until I’m 60. 20SS: Do you have any special events coming up at Zen? ER: We just had a 4-hour Yogathon at Science North where we raised $4800 for SN and the YWCA. We plan to do that again in the near future. We will most definitely have our FREE Bell Park yoga session. Last summer we had 99 people show, it was amazing! We also have a Summer Special3 months unlimited for $300. So you can come to yoga, hot yoga, boot camps, kangoo, and all of our other yoga and fitness classes. zenlife.ca zensudbury.ca Facebook.com/ZenFitness

Athlete of the Month 20SS: Why did you choose cross country/ track, how did you get into it? CC: At the age of 10, I originally started running as part of my preseason-conditioning plan to prepare for my winter season as a figure skater. 20SS: What do you feel has contributed to your success as an athlete? CC: The support of my family, teammates, and the excellent coaching staff at Laurentian have contributed to my success and my enjoyment of cross and track. My parents allowed me to participate in many sports such as downhill skiing, horseback riding, and figure skating so the training and dedication required to succeed have been instilled in me from a young age. 20SS: How do you keep your student, athletic and social lives balanced? CC: Balancing academics, a hectic training schedule, and social activities is difficult but I try to stay focused and prioritize my daily routine. A heavy course load and lengthy cross/track season limit my socializing time but this makes it even more fun when I can get together with my friends. 20SS: What are your plans for the future? CC: I am currently enrolled in the B.Sc. Radiation Therapy program at Laurentian and since I am a Northern girl at heart, I hope to eventually work as a Radiation Therapist at a cancer centre in Northern Ontario.

Carly Charbonneau sport: Cross country/ indoor track

20SS: What are some of your favourite things about Sudbury? CC: I like the campus and smaller class sizes here at Laurentian and I especially love running on the many scenic outdoor trails. Sudbury offers great shopping (I’m a Roots fan) and many unique places to eat.

Come enjoy a cold one on our patio!

We caught up with Chris Gainer of

Peddler’s Pub to find out more about their awesome new patio!

20SS: What gave you the idea for adding a patio to Peddlers? CG: The idea for our patio comes mostly from the love of drinking and eating delicious sandwiches with the breeze blowing your napkins all over the place! People tend to go crazy for patios all over the province so we said, “Why not us!?” Once we got the wheels in motion there was tons of support from patio fans and Peddlers fans all over. Now if only the sun would start shining on a regular basis we’d be set!

20SS: Are there any exciting performers coming up this summer your looking forward to seeing at Peddlers CG: We’re bringing in great bands every Friday & Saturday with acoustic performances on Thursday nights. We’re most excited to be a part of Admiral Entertainment’s New Music Fest 2014. The first weekend in July we’ll be having an indie hip-hop night featuring our favorite emcee Johnny B & UZ on the tables.

20SS: Does this mean there will be live music outside as well?

20SS: Any up coming specials for the summer?

CG: Hopefully we will be able to let it rock outside.

CG: Summer specials include Corona buckets for $20 (4 bottles) and as always our wings are an awesome deal at $6.99/order all summer. $5 bottles and $15 pitchers Bud/Bud Lite all day.

20SS: As always the food at peddlers is amazing, anything on the menu that someone who has never been there should try? CG: I swear by the Super Steak Sandwich. For those of us who aren’t into beef, we’ve got the best fish & hand-cut fries in town, along with several vegetarian options.
