To Whom It May Concern
To me You are perfection and it’s in your flaws that need no correction I place all of my love and affection and if you
Didn’t have a Valentine this year so I called Hallmark They sent me an I.O.U It looked like Wonka’s Golden Ticket so I just smiled What was Cupid’s reject to do? Describe your dream girl and redeem Read the inscription
Just find me by next Valentine’s day So we can send Hallmark A big Fuck You. Missing You
Where have you gone? Do you remember me?
Your the daydream making time stand still But this is crazy!!! We haven’t even met or maybe we did... Your better than the toys I got as kid Because every girl that could be you is a gift And when I think I found it All my gears shift into nervous anticipation for moments with you And every heart palpitation makes me write this poem without even knowing your name Just stringing out words trying not to sound lame This is the plea of a romantic thinker Turned cynical drinker who is tired of hitting the club Trying his luck
Ahhh...Love...ain’t it grand? Well it can be when you are in it. You feel untouchable and capable of so much more when you are imbued by the energy of a great partner. When you are in it, love can be a warm blanket on a kingsized bed that you just don’t want to leave. When you aren’t in it and everyone else around you is, love can be like Nelson from the Simpsons, pointing and laughing “haha, haha” repeatedly. Below are two poems written in my 20’s that express two sides of the love debate. One is from the point of view of the hopeless romantic. Other from the point of view of a guy who is sick of hearing about all the sex everyone is having without me. I am working on the middle ground poem now. That one is entitled, “Your Loss, I am Awesome.” Cheers!
I don’t care what you do
Dear sex,
With the butterflies you give me
*SHAWN MCLAREN*
Tempt fate or bribe destiny
You defy description
Only my stomach will
I AM AWESOME
Could you hurry up Day maker?
So I laughed because you dream girl
Words don’t do you justice
YOUR LOSS,
have no objection
I’ve been looking for you But only finding a fuck
The last time we met you made it burn when I pee But I miss you so much, I forgive you for that STD We used to have some good times and so much fun Do you remember once when she had came and I wasn’t done I know she probably faked it but I didn’t care Because those were the best 30 seconds I have had without underwear It has been so long sex that I don’t know if I am doing it right I have been practicing a lot but my wrists are getting tight and think my room mate can hear me at night It is like I am in high school again. Hiding my bone with book over my crotch and running out of porn to watch. I know I should wait for that special girl but right now I just want to see you again and give it a whirl So many things race through my head when I think of you Do you miss that thing that I do
So hit me like a ton of bricks
With these fingers and that one too?
Or a thunderbolt from Zeus’ palm
What about the time we missed with
However you hit, just know
a lack of grace
I’m jealous of your lip balm
When hit her cat and she pulled out her mace
And its like I’m in grade 8 when we danced
Or when we met those twins with
like this...
the crazy blue eyes
Or on a first date when we... Damn!
We took them home and found out
I’m gonna miss...
they were guys?
So please understand I’ll be a geek when we first speak I’ll be incapable of speech But don’t turn your back I’m not your Samuel Screech I’m your John Cusack Who doesn’t care if your Scarlet or Beyonce Their too high maintenance anyway
You know what sex? Now that I think about it, our times were never all that great Actually, looking back I think would rather masturbate You have brought me nothing but trouble and grief You are nothing but a big wet queef Never mind sex, you are a jerk
All I need is a laugh I get lost in
and I don’t miss you at all
And a smile that would lead angels to sin
I have to go
Once I break out of my haze
I have to go check out the high school girls
You and I can celebrate Happy Wednesdays
at the mall.
Because we don’t need a card company to tell us when to say... I love you

Health www.20somethingsudbury.ca
Exercise 1 - Squats 1. Stand with your feet shoulder with apart. 2. Bend your hips and knees. You can stop when your thighs are parallel to the floor. A lot of people tend to lean forward while performing this exercise. Try to picture yourself sitting on a chair. Your shoulders and hips should be in a perfect line. The deeper you go, the more muscles you will activate. I strongly suggest going real deep to burn those extra calories. Rise to the start position once you are at the bottom.
20 MINUTE BEACH BODY BY KEVIN ROY
Now that summer is here, you are probably starting to think about the beach a lot more than usual. If you don’t have a lot of time for the gym, this is no time to make excuses. With this 20 minute home workout you can burn fat, build muscle, and get ready for the beach in no time.
Exercise 2 - Split Squats 1. Stand with your left foot 2 to 3 feet in front of your right. 2. Lower your body until your left knee is bent 90 degrees and your right knee nearly touches the floor, and hold. Repeat with your right leg forward. Also, you can also perform this exercise by jumping and switching your legs mid air. Only if you really think you can handle it. Exercise 3 - Mountain Climber 1. Kneel on all fours like a plank position with your hands shoulder width apart. 2. Raise your legs one at a time. Imagine the motion of a person cycling. The kicking motion recruits different muscles in your core. It challenges your body to stay balanced and fry extra calories. Exercise 4 - Flutter Kicks 1. Lay on your back and raise your legs about 1 feet off the ground.
Slim down your body as well as your workout time with this 20 minute intensive resistance workout using only your bodyweight.
2. Hold one leg stationary while one leg is going up and down without touching the ground. Make sure you breathe!
Perform these exercises 5 days a week with 2 resting days. You can choose where you would like to put the resting days and also switch around the exercises so your body will not get used to them. After all, you want to confuse your body so it never adjusts and gets used to the same workouts. These exercises are made up of bodyweight exercises in a circuit style without rest in between the movements. This will raise your heart rate, which will help you burn fat. You can perform these exercises anywhere you go.
1. Lay facedown with your hands shoulder width apart and your feet together. 2. Keep your arms straight but not locked and lower your body towards the ground. If you have difficulty doing a push up, get on your knees and do the same exercise. Exercise 6 - Crunch Twist 1. Sit with your legs bent at the knee and raise them a few centimeters off the ground.
Set # 1 Warm up with 2-5 minutes of running. Do each exercise for 45 seconds and rest 15 seconds in between then move to the next exercise. After that, rests 1 minute after you’ve done them all once. Repeat the circuit 3 times. Set #2 This set will be 1 minute for each exercise and 30 seconds rest in between then move to the next exercise. Set #3 This set will be 1 min for every exercise and rest for 20 seconds. Proceed to the next exercise once the 30 seconds rest is done.

Exercise 5 - Push Ups

2. While your legs are up, put your hands together and touch the ground on the right side with your elbow and then rotate to the left. Make sure you squeeze your core! Industry Fave Favorite part of what you do? Working at RiB, I have met some of the most amazing people. My coworkers are some of my best friends; loving who you work with makes all the difference. Upcoming events at respect. The Supperclub is always hosting exciting events….we’re currently looking forward to a RiB crew Canada Day party….off the clock, of course. Something interesting people don’t know about you. I have a ‘No Matter What Club’. It’s for people who I’ll love and do anything for, no matter what. Not even the people in the club know it exists. Craziest thing that has ever happened to you while working at Respect. The list of normal things that have happened at Respect is probably shorter than the list of crazy things…..every day is a new, crazy experience…that’s what keeps me going back. When you aren’t working at Respect, what can you be found doing? I also work at the Jazz Sudbury Festival doing marketing and promotions. When I’m not working, I’m enjoying the sun or spending time with friends and family….or my puppy, LOLA!

Throughout the years, it has expanded to include acts from a wide variety of musical genres. Bluesfest is located in downtown Ottawa at the LeBreton Flats. There are 5 stages in this area, as well as acts performing at the Barney Danson Theatre, and Casino du Lac Leamy, across the provincial border in Hull. Yes Theatre www.20somethingsudbury.ca
YES Theatre 20SS: YES Theatre – give us some background information YES: The Company started back in 2010 with our inaugural production of HAIR. I just really wanted to produce that show because I loved it and magic happened and we assembled a team of people who worked incredibly hard, raised a ton of money and produced a sold out show. It was pretty wild!
20SS: What influenced you to start YES? YES: At the time I was fed up that there wasn’t a place for young people to come together and create without the boarders of things like what school you went to, or “adults telling you what to do”(I was 17 and feeling righteous I guess). But mainly because I wanted to create. I knew that the people in my life who I enjoyed spending most my time around were artists. I thought that this could be a place where we could all come together and have beautiful summers making Music and creating Theatre.
20SS: Over the years you/your cast have put together an amazing show. What do you have in store for us this summer? YES: The scary thing about doing a show as huge as Jesus Christ Superstar is that so many people love it, which means expectations are high. My team and I wanted to create a version of this show that no one will have seen before. We wanted to highlight themes in the story that usually were secondary and bring them to the foreground. Everything you know and love about the show is there but we have tried to take it to another level and bring new meaning to the piece. I want the audience to walk out and have fallen in love with a new Jesus Christ Superstar. I also think it is very important to create conversation within an audience. By having people talk about the work they will be more interested and opinionated when it comes to theatre. What you see on stage should and very well can stay with you for weeks, months and even your lifetime. We are trying to show the “human” in all these characters that by this point in time seem like distant “gods”.
20SS: How do you decide what you will perform each year? YES: The way we pick shows is usually based on a couple of things… Do we love this show? Is it or can it be politically active and relevant to today’s times and specifically young people? Do we have the cast for it? How can we do it differently than its ever been done?
20SS: Favourite play/musical? YES: Hands down my favourite show is HAIR. It’s pretty beautiful and it was the best experience of my life to be apart of.
20SS: Tell us about your artistic background
PAGE
16
YES: I started performing in my back yard… with neighbours and friends. I did some plays with Theatre Cambrian, The Sudbury Theatre Centre, and at my high school. I started working professionally in grade 8. I’ve done 3 films, 3 series, appeared on YTV and the Family Channel. Recent credits include the World premiere of a new play called HOCKEY DREAMS with Theatre New Brunswick where I toured the province with the show. I made my Toronto stage debut last year in a play called “Lost in Yonkers” with Marrion Ross from the TV show Happy Days and Linda Kash from waiting for Guffman and Second City. I am currently entering my graduation year at the George Brown Theatre School Acting Conservatory. Which is one of the best programs in Canada for actor training. In 2011, I won the community builders award for young leaders in the City of Greater Sudbury for my work in the Arts and with YES. Now I’m planning to finish school and continuing my career. I want to work all over the world, travel as much as I can, meet new people and bring my Art to people everywhere!
Yes Theatre www.20somethingsudbury.ca
20SS: What has been YES’s biggest accomplishment? YES: I think our biggest accomplishment would have to be the magnitude and calibre of which our shows are produced. We raised almost 40 thousand dollars in our 1st six months. We were a group of kids all under 22. It was an incredibly feeling to know that we could do something so huge. We have continued to produce professional work that is compelling year after year. Most importantly I like to think the biggest accomplishment is that we give people a place to come together and be loved through and through. There is no negativity in our shows. There just isn’t room for it. We are a family and the respect that each artist has for each other is astounding. That is something that is difficult to achieve in a world where ego’s run wild. At YES there is none of that. One of the most positive compliments I ever received about one of our shows was a audience member saying to me,”I cant tell you exactly what I loved about the show, but all I could feel was love surging from the stage directly into my heart.”
20SS: Thoughts on Sudbury’s art/culture community? Is there room for growth? YES: I think Sudbury needs more Arts groups. However, it has been very wonderful to see so many new groups sprouting up in the last couple of years. There is so much talent in the city and so many people who need to be given a chance. The people in the city need to be more open to new things and different types of Art…after all, it is all around us always! In the smallest and biggest ways.
20SS: What are they future plans for YES? YES: We are hoping to start to bring our work to different cities. Tour things across Canada and even over seas! My big dream is to have our own theatre some day. That is a goal that we are working at, slowly but surely! Jesus Christ Superstar runs August 9-24th at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. frank chartrand, r.g.D. 20SS: As a graphic designer and entrepreneur, what or who has been your biggest influence? FC: As a designer my biggest influences have been Italian designer, Massimo Vignelli, and Canadian designer, Bruce Mau. Vignelli is responsible for timeless branding and design work that we still see today, such as the New York Subway guide. One of his design principles is: “If you do it right, it will last forever,” which is a principle I strive to pass on to the design work for my clients. Bruce Mau is known for more radical design principles and use creative use of technology, which has lead him to work with companies like Coca-Cola and Indigo, who are always embracing change and growing with the times. I am also highly influenced by marketing mavens such as Seth Godin and Mitch Joel, as well as renowned businessmen like Warren Buffet and Robert Herjavec. 20SS: How did Bureau come to be? FC: My business partner Nico and I had both graduated from a 3-year Graphic Design program at Cambrian College. At the time I was halfway through achieving a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies at Laurentian whereas Nico chose a different route, working as a Junior Designer at 50 Carleton. We came together and started Bureau out of necessity—being in the midst of a recession, and it was a sink or swim situation. Nico had been laid off due to slow economic times, and I was looking for work. Work was available in Sudbury, but most entry-level jobs didn’t show much room for growth. There were jobs as junior designers, but Nico and I were more interested in laying down a strong foundation and building up a more rewarding career, rather than working for someone else.
20SS: What would you consider your biggest career accomplishment? FC: I’m proud to say I’ve never worked a job for anyone but myself. I’m also proud of becoming a Registered Graphic Designer (RGD) at the age of 25. Being able to start a business with Nico, which has doubled in growth every year, is also high on the list. Oh, I also got to deliver the Alumni Address at the Cambrian College convocation last year. I guess you could say those are all of my biggest career accomplishments. 20SS: Creative trends, specifically online, change so quickly. Where do you find inspiration for new designs? (Web or print) FC: Believe it or not, I get most of my inspiration for new design by looking to the past. Many of the most influential design works you see today from companies like Apple and Google have been lifted from designers like Dieter Rams and Jacob Jensen. Rams and Jensen were pioneers of clean, minimalist design. If you take a look at their work you can likely see how they have influenced a lot of the design work we produce at Bureau.
20SS: Favourite part of what you do? FC: I enjoy making a difference more than anything. I get tremendous satisfaction out of knowing I helped grow a client’s bottom line by creating a piece of design that helps them to communicate better with their audience. That’s what counts in our business, and really all that matters in the marketing world. 20SS: What are your future plans for Bureau? FC: Our plans are to keep growing at our current pace and to continue expanding in other markets. Over the past year, we have had the opportunity to work for clients in Manitoulin Island, Espanola and the Greater Toronto Area. We intend to continue working with new clients in these areas as well as Sudbury. Most importantly, we plan to continue our track record of never putting out a product we’re not fully satisfied with, and to keep loving what we do every day. 20SS: When you aren’t working at Bureau, what are some things you can be found doing? FC: Outside of Bureau, many of your readers have probably seen me promoting shows for alternative music acts that tour through Sudbury. Most recently artists like Silverstein, Protest the Hero and August Burns Red. I also run another business called Halftone, which specializes in screenprinting and merchandise. I’m an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan, so when I’m not working I can be found watching hockey and occasionally yelling at the TV screen. But mostly I love being able to spend time with my fiancée Terrie, and our dog Pomme.
20SS: Thoughts on being a 20Something business owner in Sudbury?
20SS: Tips for young entrepreneurs?
FC: I feel very fortunate and privileged to be a successful business owner in my 20s, especially in Sudbury. Since I was born and raised here there’s nowhere else I’d rather work. It humbles me each day to wake up and be able to do what I do. I try not to take anything for granted, I’m extremely grateful for every opportunity.
FC: My advice if you’re going to start a business is to make sure it’s doing something you truly love. As an entrepreneur you’ll put in more work hours than you ever imagined, so you have to love it or else you’ll get burned out in no time. A successful entrepreneur is one who is excited to wake up and get to work every day. www.bureaugroup.ca

20SS: What is your photography background – how did you get into it? AT: When I was young, my dad was constantly snapping pictures – whether they were of my sister and I, the dogs jumping off the dock, or a beautiful sunset at camp. Having that exposure to his passion for photography sparked my interest, and when he gave me my first camera for my high school graduation in 2010, I never stopped shooting! 20SS: What technology/ software/camera gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best, as you photograph? AT: This past year I upgraded to my baby: the Canon 5D Mark ii. My favourite lens for shooting portraits is my 50mm f1.4, but for any kind of landscape, I love using my wide angle! To edit, I like using Adobe Lightroom and a bit of Photoshop. 20SS: Greatest accomplishment so far? AT: I think my biggest accomplishment so far would be actually coming out as a photographer – I practiced for years with friends and family, but once I finally built a website (which was way more difficult than I thought it would be!) and Facebook page, I felt I had made a huge personal accomplishment.
20SS: Photography goals? What do you hope to accomplish? AT: Photography-wise, my goals are to continue developing my skills and become the best photographer I can be. As I also dip into videography, I aim to master the art of both –mostly for my personal enjoyment, but hopefully for the enjoyment of others as well!
20SS: Is there any hidden photography gems in Sudbury? Favorite places to photograph/ use as a backdrop. AT: I love shooting in Sudbury! I feel lucky to have such a great variety of locations to choose from that convey different moods or themes with my photo shoots. My favourite spots include the shadows in the alleys downtown, the sunset above the water at Moonlight beach, and the unrecognizable little streets or bush in the back of Garson! 20SS: If you could take photos of just one thing (item, person or place) what would it be? AT: If anyone has seen my photos, I think they’d know that I am completely OBSESSED with taking photos of my dog, Mac. I literally have hundreds, maybe thousands. He’s so funny looking and stares right into my camera, which is exactly what I like!
20SS: Plans for the future
20SS: Favorite types of photos to take? AT: I love working in natural locations, doing fun and light themed shoots. Getting great candid shots of people acting themselves is what I always strive for! 20SS: Best part of what you do AT: Making people happy. I love getting positive feedback from people! Knowing that they’ll admire their photographs for years to come is a huge honour to me.
AT: Honestly, I’m not quite sure yet. As a student, my plans for the future are still unclear. Balancing school, work, and photography has me quite focused on the present right now, with high hopes for whatever comes my way in the future. www.amandathirkill.com facebook.com/ AmandaThirkillPhotography email: info@amandathirkill.com
