What’s In This Issue www.20somethingsudbury.ca WHEN YOU ARE NOT TAKING PHOTOS FOR 20SOMETHING SUDBURY WHAT ARE YOU UP TO? I work, work, work, and when I’m not taking photos for 20something Sudbury, as a photographer and I also work for Aldo.

Q &A

WHAT IS YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN THE NICKEL CITY? My favourite thing about living in Sudbury is there is no traffic at all here; if you come from where I do, you would understand.

NONA ANGELINI-GARDNER 29 - Nightlife Photographer “pg. 22”

IF YOU COULD GO ON A DATE WITH A CELEBRITY WHO WOULD IT BE? If I could go on a date with celebrity it would be ... hmmm Jared Letto . IF YOU WON A MILLION DOLLARS TODAY WHAT WOULD BE THE VERY FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO?? I would fly back to Bali (Indonesia) and take pictures around the island and just relaxing drinking beer by the beach, enjoying life to the fullest for one month and then back to work.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT WRITING FOR 20SOMETHING SUDBURY WHAT ARE YOU UP TO? I am working on stand up, writing other things that I promised myself I would finish some day and concocting schemes with elaborate death traps. WHAT IS YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN THE NICKEL CITY? The People! I have some great friends and family here. As the city grows, so does the amount of awesome, creative and caring cats living here.

SHAWN MCLAREN 29 - Contributor “pg. 21”

IF YOU COULD GO ON A DATE WITH A CELEBRITY WHO WOULD IT BE? Define “date”…If it were a date in a romantic comedy, I would say Scarlet Johansson. If it were a date in a porno, I would say Scarlet Johannson and Jessica Alba. IF YOU WON A MILLION DOLLARS TODAY WHAT WOULD BE THE VERY FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO?? Count it.

Dear 20Somethings, Welcome to SUMMER 2013!! I was recently out with our publisher, Kelsey Cutinello, on a tear through downtown (ok, it wasn’t that wild – Kels and Kels’ assistant, Kelsey, were pretty “tired” from their party the night before that involved a mechanical bull at the Nightclub and I had just singlehandedly devoured an entire Laughing Buddha pizza.) However, it was really neat to see what was going on and somewhat shocking because it was a long weekend and downtown was like an anthill, bustling with activity; not the usual for our very “go to camp” for the long weekend culture. We also ran into Angela, our resident paparazzi, on our adventure who showed us a rather incredible photo of a girl’s vagina that she shot on her camera (don’t worry young lady, it’s safely deleted) and I also witnessed a very young man (20ish??) take home quite the cougar (50ish??) from Peddlers – impressed my dear sir, good for you. Anyway…that was my adventure in May. As promised, we have got some things up our sleeves for this summer and we hope you are excited! We are on the hunt for our first 20Something Sudbury Swim Suit Edition Cover Model! Ladies, if you think you have what it takes, send me an e-mail, with your photo attached to contest.20something@live.com. We also have some new articles this month that you MUST check out! Shawn McLaren gives us a look into his 20’s on page 21 and on page 19, we get to look at an intimate talk on sex between some 20Something’s on their girl’s night out at the Speakeasy. As always, wishing you all the best this month, enjoy our magazine and spread the love…and ladies, guard your private parts, you never know who might see them. Much Love, Ashley Sidun Editor in Chief 20Something Sudbury

Now that summer is here, its time to get in the best shape of your life!

There you have it!

First off, you will never get abs if you don’t eat well. ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN! Make sure you consume a great balance of Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates.

A complete guide and training program to develop

Abdominals are the area on the body that most people feel most self conscious about. It’s the first spot where people will notice weight gain. The reason for this is that there are a large number of fat cells that exist in that area. One reason for this is that fat cells will provide protection and insulation for the internal organs. It’s not possible for someone to reduce the number of fat cells, but it is possible to reduce the size and mass of the fat cells. The best way to reduce the excess fat and body weight is to eat really clean and exercise regularly. With the attached program, you can still incorporate weight lifting and cardio. If you eat clean, weight train, and do cardio, you will see results quickly. There are hundreds of abdominal and core exercises that you can perform. Some work, some don’t. That’s why I made a 1-month abdominal and core-training program.

and strengthen your core. I can’t push enough how important a good diet is. In all my experiences with competing and training, diet is everything. I don’t believe in the 60% diet 40 % training. Its 100 % diet and 100 % training. Also, if you have any questions make sure to ‘‘Like’’ my Facebook page Kevin Roy –Natural Bodybuilder. Enjoy your summer everyone! -Kevin Roy

Industry Fave Favourite part of your job: Being out in the sun getting my tan on and making money. Upcoming events at Cedar Green: We have tournaments regularly at Cedar Green but there are new events that we will be holding such as bridal showers, business meetings, stag and does, and baby showers. What is it like being a beer cart girl at a golf course? Everyone thinks that it is the easiest job being a beer cart girl however; at times it becomes challenging dealing with drunken men on a regular basis and being out in the sun and fresh air for multiple hours a day. Overall, there are many perks about my job that I love which is why this is my fourth year returning to Cedar Green. Something interesting that people don’t know about you: I watch TSN highlights while getting ready in the morning. When you are not working at cedar green what are you doing? If I am not working at CG I am at placement at the Women’s Centre or working at Enviro Trends. For leisurely fun I love getting together with my girls and going to the beach, having girl’s nights, and drinking wine. How is the food at the golf course? This year we revamped our menu. We have a lot more home cooking and new recipes being used. The food is delicious this year. People should come to the club house and try our new and improved menu. If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? Khloe Kardashians personal assistant.

City’s World www.20somethingsudbury.ca

Not that anybody ever needs a reason to go skateboarding, but June 21st provides the best reason of all: Go Skateboarding Day! GSD is a day where skateboarders from all around the world hit the streets, the parks, and anything else skateable, to shred and have a great time.

The greatest thing about skateboarding is that it’s just you and your board. You are your only opponent, your coach, the referee, and the cheering section. There’s nobody telling you where to ride, or what trick to do. You can spend hours focused on a trick until you nail it, and when that moment finally arrives, you enjoy a tremendous feeling of triumph. It’s a boost that stays with you for the rest of the day, and elevates the mood of your entire surroundings.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TODAY? GO SKATE (DAY)! KRISTOFER CACCIOTTI : CITY’S WORLD

Go Skateboarding Day is not only about having a great day skating, it’s a movement to raise awareness about skateboarding and the skateboarding culture. Go Skateboarding Day aims to bring attention to issues surrounding the sport, and to improve and maintain a positive image amongst the global community, while staying true to its origins as a quasi-rebellious outlet to express creativity and imagination.

So, on June 21st, you know what to do. Even if you don’t skateboard, get out to the park, find a skate session, take some photos, shoot a vid. PARTICIPATE! Get outside, get active, and most importantly, have an amazing day… because that’s what skateboarding is all about.

20SS: How did 6.8.2. Records come about? 6.8.2 Records came about because I saw a void in the music industry with what was being released. I could see that old major labels were having a hard time adapting to the digital age, (and still are) whereas we, an independent record label, have the freedom to release music we believe in, and our fans want to hear. Music is polluted with what’s hot right now, in two weeks that hit is over. We are about the albums, the music, the artists, and the art form, what the major labels have failed to pay any attention to. 20SS: What’s in the name? 6.8.2’s name comes from the phone number exchange (682) in Copper Cliff, representing where the President (Trevor Johnston) was born. 20SS: Who Do you Currently Represent? Some really legendary hip hop artists! KRS-One, Bumpy Knuckles, Sadat X, Grand Puba, Dead Celebrity Status and Sudbury’s very own, Kill The Autocrat! 20SS: What is a normal week like for your record label? What kind of things do you do? I don’t have what most people would call a “normal” week or a fixed schedule. When we sign a new artist and release their album, I work the project from beginning to end. I get most of my work done from Sudbury; however I do travel quite a bit to New York and LA for business. I take care of our publishing division, administering and protecting our copyrights and work closely with TV and film for music placement. Aside from the label and the publishing, I also manage our recording studio Six82 Studios, scheduling recordings and keeping all our computer systems and recording software up to date. 20SS: What direction are you headed in? We only release music we absolutely believe in. There’s a huge void in hip hop right now with the artists who pioneered it, Like KRS-One, Sadat X, Grand Puba etc.. So we headed in that direction. 20SS: What is the neatest thing you have experienced as a record label owner? So many great things have happened; it’s hard to pick just one! Everyday in our business something great happens. One of the greatest things would be the people I work with. I am so blessed to work with amazing people and super talented artists. It’s hard sometimes to call this work when I love what I do. It’s a great feeling and it is very rewarding to release music, you choose should be heard. I was very honoured to be asked to be a feature on Sadat X Album, “Love, Hell or Right”. We did a song together called “Cancer” and I had the opportunity to spread my message worldwide and on record forever with a legend. And salute to the Fans, the ones that buy the music, the ones that support the artist and keep the music industry going. 20SS: We have seen a lot of hype around Dead Celebrity Status lately, what is in store this year for them? After a seven year hiatus, Dead Celebrity Status is coming back with a new album, “The Throwaway Kids” which 6.8.2 Records will be releasing August 06th 2013. Big things will be happening this year for 6.8.2 and DCS.

20SS: Describe what being a spiritual mentor involves?

sudleb

Justine Giles 20SS: Describe your musical style for us. As a singer/songwriter what has been one of your major accomplishments? JG: I get this question quite often! I try not to label things too much, everyone has a different interpretation. But if I had to describe my musical style, I would have to say it’s a mix of folk and pop. In some songs I add a hint of reggae and country. Experimenting is fun! I’m so grateful for all of the music opportunities that I’ve had especially over this past year or so. The main highlights for me were appearing on The Episode and the TEDx Nickel City event. I’m currently working on my first album, which is set to come out later this year! 20SS: What are your thoughts on Sudbury’s music scene? JG: I love the Sudbury music scene and am so proud to be a part of it. I have met so many local musicians and each of them have welcomed me with open arms and have allowed me to share the stage with them. I have also met many amazing musicians touring through Sudbury. It’s so great to be able to connect with so many artists.

20SS: Why did you decide to get involved in extreme sports? CP: It was the friends I grew up with, we all enjoyed the same things and were always competitive towards each other, and that moved from bicycles eventually to dirt bikes and snowmobiles. 20SS: You have a YouTube channel, what kinds of videos can we find here? CP: Mostly motorsport videos, these include motocross, snow cross, and wake boarding. 20SS: What is the most extreme thing you have ever done for a video? CP: I’m in school to become a pilot and for one of the lessons you have to do spins in the plane. I decided to put a camera on the back of the plane and film that.

20SS: Not only do you perform and write your own music, you also design your own jewelry. What kind of pieces do you create and where can we get our hands on some? JG: I’ve always been super crafty, but jewelry making is pretty new to me. I’ve been experimenting and working with wire, gemstones, and crystals. I find it so interesting that stones and crystals have so many healing properties for the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual body. I’ve been studying these healing properties with the help of the Internet and some awesome textbooks! I’m thinking about creating an Etsy shop, but for now my creations can be found on my Facebook page; Creative Articulations by Justine Giles. 20SS:The owner/editor and graphic designer for coffee news how did this come to be? JG: In early 2011 I was finishing up the Art & Design Fundamentals program at Cambrian College, and my dad had mentioned to me that one of his best friends was selling the coffee news franchise for the Sudbury area. I didn’t hesitate to tell him that we should absolutely invest in the company. The timing was so perfect, as I was learning about graphic design at the time. So when we took the company over I was able to design new ads with great ease, and apply my new skills and knowledge. Truly meant to be!

20SS: Best part of what you do? CP: The best part about making YouTube videos is having fans that look up to you. 20SS: Who or what influenced you to get into filming videos? CP: YouTube is such a popular website and five years ago I wanted to become a part of it. A cousin of mine helped me start uploading, and after that family and friends encouraged me to continue.

JG: Being a spiritual mentor to me is just about sharing my insights openly and genuinely. I love to help others reconnect with their higher selves, and remember the inner strength that lies within each and every one of us. As a pre-teen and teen, I greatly struggled with self-acceptance and self-love. Over the years, I’ve realized my strength and potential, and somehow healed many wounds on my own. I feel so honoured to be able to help others along their healing process, and even if someone’s not dealing with an intense self-battle; I still enjoy sharing my light, love, and positive messages! 20SS: You are a singer/songwriter, jewelry designer, owner/editor of coffee news and a spiritual mentor; what influenced you to jump into all of these endeavours? JG: Everything honestly just comes naturally to me. I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason, at the right time. That’s something that I have experienced time and time again and when I just tune into my intuition, I’m lead to where I need to be. I’ve had many positive influences and mentors along the way, which I’m so grateful for. I continue to attract amazing people into my life, and I hope that I can be that inspiring person for others. 20SS: Favorite part of doing what you do? JG: I absolutely love being able to connect with people. The most freeing feeling is being myself, and having others deeply resonate with what I write (both musically and in articles). It’s such a powerful thing to be able to talk and connect with people on a daily basis, from all over the world.

It astounds me each and every day that I can say just the right message at the right time that many needed to hear. I’m often told “that’s just what I needed to hear” and “that’s exactly what I’m going through”, such an amazing experience. It’s a great reminder that we are never truly alone, even though it can feel that way sometimes. 20SS: When you aren’t working, what do you enjoy doing? JG: I absolutely love spending time with friends, catching up over coffee. I enjoy many simple things in life like watching the sunset, cooking delicious food, photographing nature, and going for really long walks. 20SS: You have a blog, what can we find here? JG: I have a brand new blog called Justine’s Stream. I have many Facebook pages and few other blogs but I wanted to put everything I do in one place. This blog includes my visual art, writings/articles, music, videos, affirmations, and info on my new programs. You can check it out at justinesstream. tumblr.com or email me at justines.stream@ gmail.com if you’d like to get in touch for mentoring or upcoming workshops! PHOTO: JAMES RYAN PHOTOGRAPHY

20SS: Is there anything you wouldn’t do in regards to extreme sports? Why? CP: I’m not going to race motocross.. It’s too dangerous and I’d prefer to have fun with the sport rather than compete in it.

20SS: How are you involved in City’s World? CP: CitysWorld.ca is an awesome local website that features some of my videos. They have helped me bring my videos to the next level and also reach a social media audience on Facebook. 20SS: You participate in extreme sports and have a YouTube channel filled with videos, what is something people don’t know about you? CP: I’m turning 19 at the end of June and kind of excited to see what this whole 20 something thing is all about ;) 20SS: Plans for the future? CP: For my YouTube channel, I would like to grow my follower base and build more fans. For sports I’m planning to focus on wake boarding this summer!

Let’s Talk Nitty Gritty Nickel City We have all read hoards of magazines with headlines like, “101 Ways to Turn Him On”, “50 Ways to Seduce Any Man”, “99 New Sex Moves”, and so on. Let’s be honest here ladies – fist off, I am pretty sure they repeat the same steps in each one of these articles and just change the order each month, and guys, I think you can attest to this – in general, it’s a lot less complicated than they make it out to seem – she’s naked, “I’m good.” Sorry to put you all in one box gentlemen, but that is the impression I get from most guys I speak to. I am lucky to have a pretty open group of girlfriends, most of which are either married now (eek) or are in serious relationships. Personally, I think they keep me around for the entertainment for the most part. I think most people see us as respectable, which no doubt we are, but let me tell you, some of the conversations we have would make a pornstar blush. Well, we decided one night at the Speakeasy downtown (if you haven’t been, you should) to name our top three take me over the top turn-ons while doing the dirty. So here it is – a few tips for the males out there and ladies, let’s see if you agree. From our table: 1. PICK ME UP! “Holy!!!! I’ll be frank, while in the midst of the deed one position makes me bored. Nothing has turned me on more than a confident guy that literally just picks me up and changes the position.” 2. HANDS “Simply put – touch me. I absolutely love the feeling of my guy’s hands on me – all over me! It never gets old. I love it when he takes his time and get’s every little inch of me, and it continues throughout the entire session.” 3. MASSAGE OIL “Light up some candles and it’s the sexiest scene to watch play out. Everything gets all shiny and slippery, not only is it hot as hell, but it is fun and playful.” So…What’s your favorite?? Stay tuned for next month when get the opinions of our guy friends – hint: “it’s all about the good vibrations…”

THOR

MUST DIE!!!! !!!!!!!!!! *SHAWN MCLAREN*

I killed a man once. I realize this is an audacious statement to open my first article for 20SomethingSudbury but that son of a beesting had to go, and no jury in the world would charge me for it. His name was Thor and he was ruining my life. That prick would show up at every party I went to and kill my night. He would get there a couple of hours after I arrived and with his drooping eyebrows, monotone speech and sheer intensity; he would proceed to piss everyone off. Some nights he would corner an unsuspecting victim and force a sloppy heart to heart conversation that would end in tears or slaps. Other nights, Thor would feel the need to avenge some great injustice and someone (often Thor) would walk away with a bloody nose or a black eye. Occasionally, when Thor was feeling especially frisky, the timeless dance of the booty call would engage and Thor would go home with a lovely lady, and I would wake up next to something neither lovely nor particularly lady like. Thor had to do die. In the immortal words of Barney Stinson, my 20’s were Legend – wait for it...a blur of awesome parties, great nights with friends, crazy adventures and side splitting stories that I will tell my grandkids when they are much older. On the flip side of all of the amazing, my 20’s were also filled with awful hangovers, missed deadlines, gassed shifts and some very awkward moments in aftermath of Thor. Oh yeah...Dary. Sorry, I forgot to mention the drugs. A couple of years ago, when my friends and I realized we were closer to 30 than we were to 20, we started telling each other that 30 is the new 20. As the clock ticks down, you start to tell yourself little things like that to make you feel better. We all want to stay young forever

because everyone told us that getting old sucks. Responsibilities, bills, grey hair, droopy boobs...gravity is constantly trying to bring us down. As I stand on the threshold of 30, I am shocked at how calm I am about this new era. Nay, I might even say that I am...excited about turning 30. I know you are sitting there reading this with your 20/20 20-year-old vision, furrowing your unwrinkled brow in disgust, thinking, “Who is this old bastard?” but I am being honest when I tell you that 30 is looking good for this kid. Like a fine wine, I am getting better with age. I am slowly turning into a silver fox and I like it. I am smart enough to know when to choose my parties and I finally learned how to save a little bit of cash. (I am typing this on my sweet new TV that I could never have afforded when I was 24... Jäger was expensive) After years of trial and error, I figured out how to talk to women...kinda. I am wiser and thankfully I am healthy, despite my best efforts otherwise during my 20’s. Don’t get me wrong. I am stoked for every 20 something in Sudbury and I hope that you have some amazing times that you vaguely remember. Do something stupid. Get crushed...emotionally. Take a risk, do the shot, say yes to crazy (or Tori because that name is synonymous with crazy in my experience). I wish that I had a time machine so I could travel back to my 20th birthday, slap my younger self in the face, sign him up for the gym and tell him to take that f&^%ing eyebrow ring out. Sadly, I am still working on the flux capacitor so I have to settle for telling you, dear reader, four simple words that turned out to be the best advice I ever got. YOU WILL BE FINE...and respect your elders dammit!
