MELTDOWN GIVES YOU A SAY IN LOCAL ACTS TO PLAY A NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVAL BORÉAL!

Northern Lights Festival Boréal hosts its annual MELTDOWN competition every spring to select local talent for the upcoming festival. Have you ever thought it would be great to have a say in the programming of a major Northern Ontario cultural event? Okay, maybe you haven’t but the point is you CAN have a say! At the MELTDOWN competition NLFB recruits tons of local performers from across Northern Ontario who audition for a slot at the summer festival. Originally this was a closed process but for the first time last year NLFB opened it up for spectators to vote on their favourite acts. Tons of music, tons of fun and a chance to have a say in the programing for NLFB 2014, sounds like a great night! At the time of this article no date has been selected, but look out for updates on NLFB’s Facebook page. P.S. Did you know that NLFB is not only Canada’s longest running outdoor music festival, but also the only major event of its kind in the North?

20SS: What made you come up with this idea; do you have your own ‘cup of coffee’ story? DW: It was actually a coffee conversation that brought me to where I am. Being from Lively when I started at University of Waterloo I didn’t have any real connections to industry professionals in southern/south western Ontario. In 2008 I was at a conference and saw Mia Pearson, of North Strategic speak. I was inspired and asked her if she would meet me for a coffee - she said yes. I told her my ideas on how brands could better connect with this younger generation. She looked at my portfolio and said, “Well, I’d like to hire you, but I’m not going to. You need to start your own business, and I won’t talk to you

Sudlebs 20SS: How did you get into music?

www.20somethingsudbury.ca

CYTG: I’ve always been really into music, when I was a baby I used to bang

on pots and pans to make beats. When I was 6 or 7 my mom put me into drumming lessons and made me jam all the time. When I got into high school, I dropped the drums and picked up a microphone. 20SS: Who are some of your biggest influences in the music world? CYTG: There are a lot of new rappers that inspire me every day to keep

making music. But 2Pac Nas and Jay Z are three very big influences and in my opinion are the best and most real artists that have been in the game. 20SS: Describe your first show… CYTG: The first show I performed at was Canada day at the Bell Park

amphitheatre; I’ll admit I have never been more nervous in my life. 20SS: How would you describe your musical style? CYTG: I don’t really have a specific style of music, with me I can go from

singing hooks to killing verses in a heartbeat. 20SS: Favourite part of what you do? CYTG: The best thing for me about being involved with music is meeting

new people and working with different styles of music. Another thing is the publicity you get from making music – it’s unreal. 20SS: What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? CYTG: At this point almost everyone in my city knows my name and they

know I make good music, I feel my biggest accomplishment this far would be the Canada day show this past summer! 20SS: When will you be releasing your mix tape?

kicking it with friends and family or enjoying other artist’s music! 20SS: Future plans? CYTG: In the future I can see myself touring and continuing to make music.

I hope to one day get signed and blow up in the music industry!

Jay Bertin Muay Thai F ighte r

20SS: How did you get into Muay Thai? jb: This is always the most difficult question, I actually started Muay Thai

after being charged with assault, I was court ordered to start some form of boxing or kickboxing, and well that’s how I started. I would actually thank them now if I could, considering Muay Thai has changed my life for

20SS: You are going to Thailand in March, what type of training have you been doing to prepare for this? jb: I’ve been invited to Thailand March 4th to represent Canada as a

coach and fighter at the championships. The training I’ve been doing is like any other fight, lots of cardio and lots of sparring, I train about 3 times

the better.

a day and hopefully it can prepare me for what’s to come.

20SS: What does Muay Thai training consist of?

20SS: What is the difference between training in Canada and Thailand? Do you think you are ready for it?

jb: Muay Thai (known to some outside of Thailand as Muay Thai

kickboxing) is a national sport of Thailand as well as a national passion. It is a fighting technique born out of combat reality, known as the science of eight limbs, Muay Thai kickboxing uses the knees and elbows as well as kicks and punches. Almost any part of the body is considered a fair target and any part of the body, except the head, may be used to strike an opponent. It is considered by many to be the ultimate in hand-tohand fighting. Muay Thai kickboxing is a professional and amateur sport, a martial art, aerobic fitness program and a useful form of self-defence. But Muay Thai kickboxing is more than just learning how to fight – Muay Thai kickboxing is a strong and vigorous martial art that teaches self-discipline and self-awareness. It has been passed down through generations for the last 2000 years. 20SS: What is the scene like in Sudbury? Do we have a lot of people into Muay Thai? jb: The Muay Thai scene in Sudbury has been pretty good the last couple

of years , our club has been the only in Sudbury to put on Amateur Muay Thai shows , we have some good athletes in Sudbury , I’d like to bring more to Sudbury and continue grow.

jb: The difference between training here and in Thailand is that Muay Thai

is Thailand’s national sport, kids start training at 3 years old; they will train for 9-14 hour days every day. I hear it’s pretty intense; it’s going to be an experience of a lifetime. I think I’m ready for the challenge for sure. 20SS: What qualities do you think make a top fighter? jb: Becoming a top fighter is heart and dedication , only you can tell

yourself when to push harder, no matter how good you think you are you can always learn more. Never give up and things will fall in place. 20SS: How would you describe your technique? jb: Hard to answer that one, I believe my technique is pretty solid. I’ve

learned from the best in the world but I think it needs improvement, and going to Thailand for a month will offer me that chance to work on it. When you have nowhere else to go, go to the source. 20SS: What has your biggest accomplishment been so far? jb: Actually my biggest accomplishment is getting invited to Thailand to

represent Canada, I’ve only dreamt of going there and now I am. Dream come true.

Health www.20somethingsudbury.ca

STAY SAFE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY Green beer, Irish pubs and extra hype make St. Patrick’s Day a highly anticipated holiday for many twenty-something’s. While the festivities are alluring, St. Patrick’s Day can also pose some risks. Here are three simple tips to keep your celebrations safe. While green beer can be enticing… 1) Don’t drink and drive. Hopefully this is a no-brainer; however, last minute plans can leave you lacking transportation. Statistics Canada reports increases in drunk driving rates on holidays. Those ages 20-24 are ranked highest in impaired driving rates for the entire Canadian population – with those ages 25-34 ranked the second highest for impaired driving rates. Plan ahead, have a designated driver or a planned ride home and remember it is never safe to drink and drive. 2) Stay hydrated. There’s nothing worse than a hangover to remind you how much you wish you didn’t drink last night. Alcohol has a diuretic effect – it causes you to lose much more water through your urine than you normally would. Ensuring adequate water intake as you drink will prevent dehydration and decrease the chances that you end up with a hangover.

Furthermore, recent trends in alcohol consumption including the inhalation of alcohol vapors and neknominations pose even greater risks to those involved. Warnings against the inhalation of alcohol vapors have been issued by many health professionals. When alcohol vapors are inhaled they travel to the lungs where they have a direct entry point into the blood stream. This is extremely dangerous as it prevents any metabolism of the alcohol before it enters the blood stream. Participating in this trend puts one at a high risk for overdose, not to mention the damage to the lungs which can occur. Neknominations have also been trending recently – prompting warnings from health professionals and police departments alike. Unfortunately, the risky behaviour encouraged by neknominations has already claimed multiple lives. It is important that everyone knows their personal limit and stays within it. Don’t let a trend or a holiday be your excuse to do something you may regret.

3) Know your Limit. Research by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has shown that twenty-something’s tend to consume more alcohol when celebrating a holiday or special event than they would on a normal night out; this puts St. Patrick’s Day celebrators at an increased risk for alcohol poisoning and injury.

Lifestyle www.20somethingsudbury.ca

20SS: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment in sport or in life? jm: I would say becoming fit is my greatest accomplishment. When I was

younger I was into acting and I wasn’t very active. One day I made a decision to make a lifestyle change – I started eating healthy and exercising. This allowed me to join sports teams and ultimately got me to where I am now. 20SS: Why Nordic skiing, what influenced you to get into it? jm: I stared skiing when I was five or six because my mom put me into it

and my brothers did it. I only stuck with it for a couple years until I started figure skating. I picked it up again in high school after I hurt my knee in a wrestling injury; I’ve been doing it ever since. 20SS: Can you name a couple things that you think have contributed to your success? jm: I’m a very determined person. Once I decide that I’m going to do

something, that’s it. I’ve also had a lot of help from my parents. They’ve been there for me since day one: driving me to practices, supporting me and paying for everything. 20SS: What drew you to Sudbury? jm: I randomly heard about Laurentian one day; I booked a tour and I fell

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Name: Jillian Mayhew, 19

in love. I’m from a small town, so I like that Sudbury isn’t too big. I also like that Laurentian is a smaller university – and it definitely helps that there are ski trails on campus!

Hometown: Haliburton, Ontario

20SS: What do you like to do on weekends? What is your favourite thing to do in Sudbury?

Degree/Year: Kinesiology, 2nd year

jm: I just like to relax on the weekends – I’ll ski and do homework. But

Sport: Nordic Skiing

let’s be honest weekends are for homework. Other than that I like to go bowling, to the movies and Wolves games with my friends.

Take Off: Big Air at Boogie Mountain K r istof e r Cac ciot t i | cit ysworld.blo gsp ot.ca

A couple of weeks ago, Boogie Mountain held its 2nd annual winter festival. This two day event featured speed trials where riders charged the main and were clocked by a radar gun, a boarder cross competition where riders raced against one another over jumps and through a closed course, a live dj set, a licensed after-party, and le piece de la resistance... a big air competition! This year, the big air comp showcased a 30-foot tabletop built by Zach Dopson. The best jumpers on both skis and snowboards from Sudbury and the surrounding area travelled to Boogie Mountain in Espanola to push their limits and throw down. And throw down we did! The preliminary round was a spectacle in and of itself. It was the year of the invert, and it quickly became evident that if you wanted to be relevant, you had to either get upside down or go HUGE. Big rodeos, floaty backflips, misties, 900s, wildcats, cork everything. When the snow settled, the snowboarding podium was a mixture of OGs and young guns. Jordon Lafond took down 3rd place. Lafond is sixteen years old, and has taken leaps forward in his riding in the past two seasons. 2nd place went to Chad Walter, a bonafide OG in the Sudbury snowboarding scene. 1st place went to seventeen year old Chad Gagnon, who displayed crazy amplitude and slick composure in the air all day long.

In the ski category, Drew Burrowes took down 2nd place. Burrowes is new to skis, as he traded in his snowboard for skis only two years ago. 1st place went to Jon Knight. The crazy thing about Jon is that he attempted his very first backflip at ten o’clock, the morning of the competition when he was watching the rest of his field warm up and said, “They’re doing backflips? If I’m gonna win this thing, I’m gonna have to learn backflips.” This year, the carnival was better than last year’s. More riders came out to compete. More people came out to watch and cheer. More people participated in the radar runs. Boardercross was introduced. DJ Shane Greenwell was brought in to throw down a live set, and Boogie Mountain locked down a liquor license for their after party. Moving forward, the goal is to make this festival grow every year, and we’ve already started planning for the third annual. The most notable upgrade for next year’s festival is the addition of more rail features and the introduction of a rail jam. Calling all jibbers! There will also be more live music and the opportunity to park campers, so that everyone can get loosey goosey at the after party and not have to worry about a ride home.
