SUDBURY’S GROWING MUSIC SCENE

On Friday, September 13th, Sudbury hosted the one and only Mac Miller at the newly redesigned Grace Hartman amphitheatre in the beautiful Bell Park. The temperatures were low but excitement was high as the students of Laurentian University welcomed Mac as part of the Frosh Week festivities put on by LU’s Student’s General Association. Mac Miller, a rising star in popular hip-hop, put on a show of epic proportions and kicked some incredibly dope shit for everyone. Following last year’s frosh concert of Dean Brody, Mac Miller marked another milestone in Sudbury’s growing ability to draw in popular artists that are on the rise.

Impressed yet? We haven’t even mentioned the popular EDM scene. When you include EDM DJs into the mix of Sudbury’s latest shows our appeal becomes even more staggering. Festival trap artist ETC! ETC! played his first ever Canadian show here. Charlie Darker is quoted as saying his show at The Ten was the best ever. DVBBS, authors of this past summer’s mega hit “Tsunami” just came through town and kicked off the school year for everyone. This only scratches the surface of the popular DJ’s who have visited our town in the recent months.

Excuse me for getting excited about all these artists, but I remember a darker time. A time when Don Mclean headlined a summer festival at Bell Park, when Bob Dylan “played” Sudbury arena and was understood by no-one, when Elton John caused city wide corruption over ticket hoarding. Albeit, all these artists were legendary in their prime, but as a twentysomething in the new millennium their appeal is somewhat lost on me.

There was a time when Sudbury was a tagged on tour stop for musicians and acts that were past their prime. This is now a thing of the past. Sure, we Sudburians still enjoy when retro acts come to town and kick ass (just think of KISS at the Sudbury Arena this past summer), but now it’s not the only option available. Rising stars from country, EDM, rock, and hip-hop have all begun to visit our town, creating a strong music scene that only seems to be growing. In case your memory is hazy let me do a little Roll Call: Eric Church, a main attraction at country festivals all over North America, played in our city to a sold out crowd. Marilyn Manson, king of the shock metal scene, played a show last winter that was so crazy that the Sudbury Arena had to be evacuated. Just off the success of her worldwide #1 single “Call Me Maybe”; Carly Rae Jepsen performed this past August at Sudbury’s annual SummerFest. Rolling Stone cover artists, The Sheepdogs seem to visit our town so regularly you’d swear they had a mistress here.

At the time of writing of this article Sudbury is preparing to host its first ever EDM festival, a truly momentous millstone. The music scene is growing here, and its opening doors for the city. Locals are opening for bigger artists and being recognized in more places, the city is drawing more and more students to our colleges and university, and the city is hosting more and more sub-cultures. With all this great new music around, it really is the perfect time to be a twenty something in Sudbury.

Industry Fave Favorite part of what you do? The music and the “regulars”, to be a part of the music scene in Canada if only in a small way is amazing. Since working at the Townehouse I have had the opportunity to see the best Canadian music as well as showcase my own music. Upcoming events at your work? Trick question? We have great music every night but yes there are specific shows I am excited for. Hollerado – October 26th and our Halloween party on the 31st will be a blast. Something interesting people don’t know about you. My secret obsession with Corey Feldman! Kidding… kind of. I think what surprises people most is my nerdy side haha Don’t let my dresses fool you I have quite the nerdy slash “tomboy” side. Craziest thing that has ever happened to you while working? Soo I work at the Townehouse….. haha need I say more? Want to hear crazy stories, come in during the day, sit at the bar and have a beer… You will hear some crazy stories. When you aren’t working what can you be found doing? You can probably see me zooming by on my awesome bike and I’m usually headed for food. If I’m not eating I’m probably practicing guitar or painting and I try to be outdoors as much as possible. What was the best act you have seen at work? Here’s a list: Eat’n’Holler, Tarantula, Five alarm funk, Wool on Wolves, Julie Doiron, Daniel Romano, Murder Murder (local), Pistol George Warren (local) and Supertoke (local and so awesome they will melt your brain)

Halloween has been my favorite holiday ever since I was a little kid. I remember running around my neighbourhood in some awesome costume my mama made, struggling to reach my goal of 3 pillowcases. In those days, Halloween was the most exercise I got all year and I loved it. Not just because of all of the sugar but because Halloween is the one day of the year when we can stop being ourselves and become whatever we want. Being a kid on those 3 pillowcase adventures, I remember seeing princesses, witches and Wonder Girl running from house to house in search of the good stuff. It was all innocent and fun. Our biggest worry was if someone really did put razor blades in the chocolate bars like the grownups warned. Ah...the good old days... But then something weird starts to happen to Halloween; we start turning into grownups and our motives for dressing up change. Somewhere along the way, Halloween became less about seeing how many chocolate bars we could eat and more about how many shots we can slam. It was also around this time that the princesses and the witches we used to see in our youth were being replaced with sexy cops and lusty vampires. The Wonder Girls had transformed into beautiful Wonder Women but their costumes hadn’t grown with them...which was awesome! You turn 19 and all of the sudden, every costume you could ever think of has become hyper sexy. No longer satisfied with just looking cute, ladies have found out ways to make the most innocent costumes the starring role in a few post-Halloween fantasies. A few Halloweens ago, I saw sexy Elmo grinding up on a busty Robin. When I turned around, I witnessed Leonardo, leader of the Ninja Turtles making out with a scantily clad Stormtrooper. This entire genre bending girl on girl action was blowing my mind and I loved Halloween more than ever. But then the limits of what could be turned into a sexy costume started to get ridiculous. Last Halloween, I saw several sexy Tim Horton’s girls, affectionately called Timmy Hoes. A group of sexy lunch ladies and a horny Spongebob Squarepants. Things have gone too far.

As a serious journalist, I went to the source of scandalous Halloween gear in Sudbury. Spirit Halloween on Notre Dame Avenue has got everything you need to keep your Halloween classy. Erdem and his staff were jacked about Halloween and it totally shows. One of his enthusiastic team members wore an awesome Riddler’s hat and kept snapping pictures of every costume I tried on for the Spirit Halloween Faecbook page. I would like to think that he kept a few for his own private collection but that is what happens to your confidence while wearing a sexy Halloween costume. In my case, for first time ever, I knew that I truly was a sexy muthaf$#*a! The first ensemble was in the superhero motif. I opted for Wonder Woman because I think that she best represents my curvature and love for Batman. The first thing I noticed was that this “plus size” costume wouldn’t even do up in the back which is ridiculous because I am a size nine dammit!!!! Now because the costume wouldn’t do up, if I was a woman my breasts would be exposed for the entire night. A minor detail for some but Wendy raised me right. The sexy cop costume showed me a more risqué side of law enforcement. Practicality gets thrown out the window in favor of high hemlines and plunging cleavage. If I were a real cop and forced to wear that outfit, my 87 year old Nana could beat me in a foot chase. Cops would be charged with indecent exposure if had to wear these which is why I am starting a petition to give police officers the choice between this costume and their boring old Kevlar vest. Wearing the sexy cop costume made me realize that I have great quads and I will strongly caution my daughter to avoid a career in law enforcement. To all of my costumed friends out there going out this Halloween; like R. Kelly said “I don’t see nothing wrong with a little bump and grind.” Have a fun and safe Halloween and remember that these three things can never be a sexy costume. 1. Dora the Explorer. 2. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against sexy costumes. On the contrary. If you want to rock the sexy firefighter costume, go for it! There will be plenty of five alarm pants fires on October 31st!

Stack Breweries I have fond, fuzzy memories of being in university and counting coins for a good Friday night with a couple of wobblypops. Our standard go to for party libations was good ole Northern Breweries. Some of you reading this article may remember consuming a draft ball or two before Northern Breweries shut its doors forever. This caused an outcry from beer drinkers loyal to supporting their local brew. There is something nice about sipping on a cold one knowing that it came from your backyard. Earlier this year, brewing came back to Sudbury when Sean Mailloux started Stack Breweries in a small industrial space on Kelly Lake Road. Fuelled by a love of tasty beer, Mailloux sought out craft beers from all over, always returning home, wishing there was some closer to home This passion soon turned into determination and soon Mailloux found himself dividing his time between teaching and developing recipes for his hoppy concoctions. Despite Stack Breweries humble home, the brew room was a hub of activity when I visited. Sean spoke with genuine enthusiasm for beer while he helped his assistant Rob fill 32 oz Growler bottles with their double !PA “Angry Moose”. He spoke excitedly about his new Zingerbeer, a refreshing pint with lemon and ginger brewed inside of it. Filling bottles with a long pressurized steel nozzle and surrounded by steel vats, the grinning Mailloux reminds me of a mad scientist as he tells me about how new recipes come to fruition. “We (the staff) sit around after work, drinking beer and talking about all of the crazy things we want to try. Most of the time, we do!” says Mailloux. I immediately ask him for a job. Although they are new to the craft brew industry, Stack Breweries has created a positive buzz around Sudbury. Local restaurants like the Fromagerie on Elgin and the Laughing Buddah can’t keep up with the demand for Sudbury’s new brew. If you can’t make it out for a pint, Stack sells all of their brands at their storefront at 1350 Kelly Lake Road. If you are looking for a fine brew for more than just Beer Pong, I highly recommend the Les Portes de L’Enfer or their Vanilla Amber Chai.

SB Tuesdays Who is behind SB Tuesdays? How did you all come together? SB Tuesdays is a group of 5 talented young women who were sitting around a coffee shop one day, lamenting the lack of alternative cinema in Sudbury. Four of the members, Janet Evans, Joanne Lamoureux, Emilie Fournier, and Chantal Larochelle, all know each other from previous work experience. Jessica Wismer came in through a mutual friend and founding member of SB Tuesdays, Cynthia Tremblay, and just clicked with the others. What is SBTuesdays? We are a not for profit group that hosts screenings of cult films in order to raise funds for local organizations, charities and groups in need. Our goal is to bring alternative cinema to Sudbury and create a positive difference in our community by hosting fun participation film screenings, with all the money raised being donated to local charities. By fostering a sense of community, we try and encourage awareness for local charities as well as an appreciation of alternative cinema. We choose the charities based on themes found in the films we screen, and work with them to promote awareness and our events. At all our events we hand out a participation kit that holds items used to interact with the film. We encourage the audience to dress up as their favourite characters from the film, talk to the screen, quote lines, and sing along.

How do you decide which films to show? What is classified as an alternative film? We selected the early films (The Room, Rocky, Sleepaway Camp) based on movies that we wanted to see in theatres and experiences we wanted to have. The later films have come up based on audience request; at each screening we provide feedback cards that allow anyone attending to suggest movies to show. This is how we came up with The Princess Bride, The Big Lebowski, and The Labyrinth. We find that movies we put on based on audience request tend to have a better turn out (for obvious reasons). We try to not only show alternative films, but cult classic films that haven’t been shown in theaters in a while. Cult films tend to be ones that performed poorly at the box office but have since developed a devoted following after their theatrical release. These are the films that we like to show - the ones that have built in fan bases so that we know we’ll be able to raise money for the selected community organization. All the money you raise goes towards non-profits, which nonprofits have benefited from SB Tuesdays so far? So far, we have raised money for local charities and organizations such as Réseau Access Network, YWCA Genevra House, The Rainbow Routes Association, Special Olympics Sudbury - Bowling League, Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation -Send a Kid to Camp, Red Cross Disaster Management Fund, and Big Brothers Big Sisters Sudbury. To date we have raised over $10,000.

What has the response been so far? The response from the community has been excellent. Participants love coming to our events because they are surrounded by likeminded individuals who are up for a fun night of yelling at the screen, dressing up, and enjoying a great (and sometimes terrible) movie. Organizations that we’ve worked with often don’t understand what we are trying to do (why raise money for them without getting anything in return) but are always grateful that we have selected them and that they will benefit from our little side project. We’ve received nothing but support from Rainbow Cinemas and thank them dearly every time we hold an event, because without their belief in our cause, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do and give to the community the way that we currently are able to.

Upcoming events/future plans? Our 9th event will be taking place this October, featuring a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The details are still in the works as we speak, but you can expect the same level of extreme participation, like in all our past events. As for future plans, with Rainbow Cinemas closing we now have to search for an alternative venue for our events. All of us at SB Tuesdays are very sad to see the theatre go, but we would like to see our little community group live on. Beef Up Like A Bear BY :: JOHN HILLIER

It is finally time: the unofficial start to Bulking Season! That’s right it’s cold out and the shirt is staying on, so up the calories and let’s get to work. Most people are thinking, “now I can get lazy with my diet, eat those Halloween chocolates and booze it up because hell it’s time to bulk!” This is not accurate in the slightest, unless you want to look soft and flabby. Let’s look at how lean muscle can be put on using proper nutrition, training, as well as rest. First let’s look at where your diet should be since bodies are made in the kitchen. While adding calories to your daily diet is necessary when putting size on, it is very important to look at how many calories you should be adding. Consistency is key here; you aren’t going to put on 10 lbs. of muscle overnight so don’t go eat like you can grow overnight. Shoot for 250-500 calories a day more and use measurements as well as pictures to chart progress (scales are useful but do not often tell you the whole story). Be sure to adjust calories as needed depending on the rate that you are gaining. This also goes the other way; if you aren’t noticing any change then you can increase your calories higher. ***Now hold on before you go run out and grab a Mars bar and some M&M’s*** These calories should not be mindless and it is important to look at the quality of the source. Remember to stick to your lean protein sources like chicken, fish, or turkey, get complex carbs like brown rice or sweet potatoes, and healthy fats like avocado or almonds. Lastly be sure to train like an animal. Every time you set foot in the gym you are waging war against your muscles. If you want to gain muscle, you have to physically make your body put it on millimeter by millimeter. I’m not saying train for 3 hours a day until you have to be carried out of there, but use your time wisely in the gym and keep intensity high. Record your exercises, sets, reps, and weights in a training log to be sure that you are always progressing. This goes without saying that if you are pushing your body hard then you will also need to recover. Be sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep per day and listen to your body when it tells you to take a day off.

In the end this can help you sculpt the body of your dreams. It will take hard work in the kitchen, the gym, and in the bedroom! This is not a quick fix, but a recipe to be used the rest of your life. Every day push to be Better Than Yesterday!

We all know what it’s like to be scared.
