Gal Harper musician of the month CONSCIOUS RAP: A SUB-GENRE OF HIP-HOP THAT FOCUSES ON CREATING AWARENESS AND IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE. SOME RAPPERS DON’T NECESSARILY LIKE GETTING PIGEON-HOLED WITH THIS TERM, WHILE OTHERS EMBRACE IT. BEING CONSCIOUS, BUT ALSO HAVING THE SKILL SET TO INSPIRE AND RELATE TO YOUR AUDIENCE IS AN INCREDIBLE TRAIT TO HAVE. ENTER GAL HARPER. GAL HARPER IS A CANADIAN RAPPER, SINGER, AND SONGWRITER. HE GREW UP IN SUDBURY, ONTARIO AND MOVED TO LONDON, ONTARIO IN THE FALL OF 2009. HE TAKES AN UNORTHODOX APPROACH ON THE HIP-HOP GENRE, AS HIS LYRICS TEND TO CONFRONT THE MAINSTREAM ON ITS MORAL CONSCIENCE. HIS MUSIC SENDS A POSITIVE MESSAGE, WHILE TOUCHING ON THE STRUGGLES AND CHALLENGES HE FACES IN HIS OWN PERSONAL LIFE. HE RAPS ABOUT RELATABLE ISSUES AND AIMS TO INSPIRE HIS LISTENERS. GAL RECENTLY RELEASED HIS FIRST ALBUM, TITLED “THE RISE & SHINE EP”, WHICH CONSISTS OF 6 ORIGINAL TRACKS. THE ALBUM CAN BE FOUND ON ITUNES, AMAZON, AND JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER ONLINE MUSIC STORE. THE EP SHOWCASES GAL’S DIVERSITY AND RANGE, AS IT INCLUDES SOME MOTIVATIONAL UPBEAT TRACKS, AS WELL AS MORE EMOTIONALLY CHARGED CHRONICLES.
WE CAUGHT UP WITH GAL IN LONDON TO ASK A FEW QUESTIONS. 20SS: BEING A RAPPER FROM NORTHERN ONTARIO GIVES YOU AN ANGLE NOT ALL ASPIRING ARTISTS HAVE. WHAT ABOUT BEING FROM THE “GREAT WHITE NORTH” INSPIRES YOU? GH: I’ll tell you, there isn’t a more beautiful drive that I have taken, than the trip back home to Sudbury in the fall. It’s a majestic scene, when the autumn leaves start changing colour. I definitely miss the nature of the North. I find that, just being out there, away from all the noise, brings an indescribable peace to the soul. That’s where a lot of my deepest thoughts come to me… which, in turn, can lead to incredibly profound song ideas. 20SS: TELL US A BIT ABOUT ‘RISE AND SHINE’. WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL TO YOU? GH: It’s really more than just an album to me. When I look at it, I don’t just see a CD in a case. I see years of dreams, sweat, tears, and dedication. I put so much of myself into this project. Having people respond to it so positively is overwhelmingly rewarding. 20SS: WE KNOW YOU JUST FINISHED THE EP, BUT WE HAVE A FEELING YOU WON’T LET THIS MOMENTUM GO TO WASTE! WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? GH: Well, there’s no such thing as free time in my world. I’ve already been back in the studio, working on a few collaborations. I’m planning to release a few Singles and some music videos in the near future. I’m fortunate to have a multitude of creative minds in my corner, and they’re all eager to get back to work. 2013 was a pretty big year for me, so I’ve got a plan in the works to make 2014 even bigger. 20SS: WE’RE WAITING ON A SHOW HERE IN SUDBURY! ANY PLANS FOR THIS? GH: Absolutely. I’ve been working out details, for a few weeks, trying to figure out a timeline for it. I can’t give you an exact date just yet, but I will definitely be doing a Homecoming show for the city. WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/GALHARPER WWW.GALHARPERONLINE.COM/ SOUNDCLOUD.COM/GAL-HARPER

CHRISTMAS Two seconds after Halloween was over, everyone started talking about Christmas. Like my neighbour who debated whether or not to put the lights up on November 1st or to wait until after Remembrance Day because the “activists” would be all over him. Or my Mom who started planning who to send Christmas cards using a flow chart. As an adult, Christmas can get overwhelming and not to mention, tough on the wallet. It is a stressful holiday that I would enjoy much more if I could recapture the joy and enthusiasm that I had for Christmas when I was a child. Wanna know what I love about Christmas as an adult? 1. Every year, my sister and I prank my Uncle Bob. Last year we convinced him that Juan, the bell hop from his vacation in Cuba had sent him a Christmas present filled with assorted sexy underwear, scented lotions and a plane ticket to “see him anytime...xoxo”. 2. Going to a midnight Christmas dinner at my friend Eric’s house on Christmas Eve. We eat, laugh and drink until 5:00 am until I catch a cab to my parent’s place, crash on the couch and wake up at 10:00am ish to open gifts and have breakfast with my family. It is always the best morning of the year no matter how hung over I am. 3. My Nana’s Turkey. When I was younger, I made a crack about how small the Christmas turkey was. I said something a punk fat kid would say like “What? We are doing Cornish hen this year?” and my Nana has never let me forget. Now, every Christmas it seems like that turkey gets bigger and more delicious, even if my Nana one day showed up with a BBQ chicken from Food Basics. Every year my parents ask my sister and me for a Christmas list and every year it gets harder to fill that list. As an adult, you realize what it takes to make an excellent Christmas. You know that Christmas takes a lot of time and energy to get the gifts, wrap the gifts, make the fruit cake, get the tree up, send the cards...it can be exhausting and costly. Not to sound like a Scrooge but I was pumped when my parents told us this year that they didn’t want to buy any presents. They said that Christmas is for the kids and I completely agree with them...at least the gift part.
When you get older, a pair of socks and a gas card counts as a great gift. I would rather spoil my little cousins with sweet toys that they get super stoked for. When my sister and I were little we would search for our presents. Half the fun was sneaking around like little Christmas spies trying to track down where my folks hid our gifts. One year when we were little, my parents caught on to our operation. All we wanted was a CD player. Everyone else had one and they were all talking about the awesome albums they had. Meanwhile we were listening to tapes like suckers. We had found a bunch of CD’s a few days ago at our Nana’s house but no CD player. Assured by the Hootie and the Blowfish CD that I had discovered, I knew that Christmas morning was gonna pay off with a kickass sound system. On Christmas morning, my sister and I opened all of our presents, including the pile of CD’s that we couldn’t wait to listen to. After the last present was unwrapped, my sister and I sat in silence and exchanged a concerned look that said “Way to drop the ball Mom and Dad” while our parents explained that they were waiting until after Boxing Day to buy a CD player so for the time being we could read the liner notes and imagine what the songs sound like. Devastated, we retired to the rec room to play with our stupid other presents and plot revenge. As I stared at my Pokemon with an intense, silent fury, I was brought out of my rage by the soft sounds of Hootie and the Blowfish floating down the stairs. We rushed upstairs to see our parents chilling in the living room in front of a brand new CD player, chuckling at how hilarious this amazing prank was. I still don’t think they realize how close they came to a flying Stretch Armstrong to the face that day. I suppose the moral of the story here is that Christmas isn’t about the presents, as you grow older. It is about the people you share that day with and enjoying the happiness of a child who just opened their “CD Player”. And if you have kids, Christmas is the perfect day to royally mess with them.

Industry Fave Favourite part: It’s fun! I love meeting new people, my regulars and the awesome folks I work with - it’s work and play at the same time, which is pretty awesome. Upcoming events: We are open for NFL Sundays!! Come and see me! $3 wings on Wednesdays and Thursdays (with live music) and we always have different bands on the weekends, which I love to dance along with. People don’t know about me: I’m from Scotland! I love jack Daniels. I have an honours science degree? Lol Craziest thing: Hahahahahahahaha... Ummm there have been a few. Let’s go with coolest... I’ve met a lot of famous movie/music stars at work and it’s pretty neat to converse and joke around with them in an everyday environment, even make some friends. Where can you find me: Outside! I love competing with my awesome horse, snowboarding, biking, boxing and kickboxing... Or at one of our awesome downtown establishments enjoying a drink (or two...) Best tip: Can I go with a quote? “Be truthful, gentle and fearless” ~ Ghandi. That’s how I like to live my life.

YES THEATRE
Sudbury is currently going through a creative rebirth thanks in part to an incredible talented cadre of passionate 20 something’s motivated by the rush of performing. Just this past summer, YES Theatre embarked on a wildly successful sold out run of Jesus Christ Superstar where they masterfully showed local audiences that being from Sudbury doesn’t mean that we aren’t as talented as our Toronto counterparts. The response to J.C.S was so massive; it has prompted the troupe to mount a revival of the show this summer for those who missed out the first time. YES Theatre is comprised of a family of young artists who pour their passion and enthusiasm into every performance including Kelsey Tyson who has been with YES since their production of “Hair” where she worked back stage, opening the door for actors rushing on stage. She jokingly boasts that she was “the best damn door opener ever.” With a chic bohemian style, Kelsey is a knockout with mesmeric eyes and a joyful laugh. She sounds wiser than her 21 years when we talk about the creative scene in Sudbury and her passion for the arts shines through when she starts talking about working on YES Theatre’s Christmas Cabaret. “There is going to be some large ensemble vocal numbers...maybe a little bit of Queen and Bob Dylan...the classic Christmas songs for everyone...a little bit of anything,” she explains
with excitement her voice. When we start talking about her song choice for the show, her eclectic artistic spirit unveils as she explains that she is torn between two melancholy song choices, despite pressure to do an upbeat Christmas jam. Her melodic voice cuts through the din of the noisy coffee shop when she artlessly sings a few lines from one of the songs. For Kelsey and many other young performers in this town, their creative pursuits are counterbalanced by educational endeavours. Currently in her fourth year of psychology at Laurentian University, Kelsey revels in the creative satisfaction she finds in working with YES Theatre and the Sudbury Burlesque troupe. When talking about pursuing what makes her happy, Kelsey’s enthusiasm shines through when she rambles excitedly about theatre and everything that goes into it. “YES Theatre is like nothing else that I have ever experienced! It is a family. It might sound kinda culty but we always hang out together and we sing and jam all of the time,” she gushes and her sheer energy makes me want to high five her. Go see YES Theatre’s Christmas Cabaret on December 20th to enjoy Kelsey and her family of talented and passionate performers doing what they love to do. mr. december
santa claus 20SS: How do you become Santa Clause? Was it by choice or were you born with that beard? SC: It was a really trippy experience man. Really didn’t see it coming but I guess that’s the universe for you. It was Christmas of 67 and me and my roommate Rudy were in the chem lab at Laurentian brewing up a pretty tasty tea to celebrate yet another year. We headed out on snowshoes and found this cave. Inside there was a snowman standing in front of this swirling blue portal. He looks at me and Rudy and shoves us in. Next thing I know, I am 100 pounds heavier, Rudy is now a fu$%ing talking reindeer and we are made out of clay. Everything in the North Pole is claymation. Long story short, these little jingling dudes came out of this massive gingerbread house and gave me the red suit and they slapped a red nose on Rudy. The rest as they say is history. 20SS: How did you name the reindeer? SC: It actually happened the first night we were at the North Pole. Naturally we were both freaking out about the situation but Rudy totally lost it. He ran out into the woods screaming “I am a man, not a fucking reindeer!” over and over again. I was in the workshop having a drink with Cornelius, the head elf when he came back a couple of days later with 8 other reindeers he had claimed as his wives. He looked calm and happy for the first time since we got there. He named the girls Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen after his 7 favorite strippers and his number 1 favorite action director, Mr. Richard Donner. 20SS: Is Rudolph actually your favourite? Why? SC: I don’t like to use the word favorite but Rudy is definitely my best friend in the entire world, even before he turned into a reindeer. That first year as Santa was rough. Rudy was doing okay cause he had the girls and he discovered that he loved flying. Should have been a fighter pilot really. Me? I was depressed, lonely and over loaded with the scope of the job. I mean I was a C- student who had a hard time making it to 12:30 pm classes. So I turned to the nog...I was drinking anywhere between 4-6 cartons a day. I was a wreck. It was Leaving Las Vegas bad. But Rudy was the one who brought me back. One day, he and the girls put me in the sleigh after I had passed out in the workshop. They took me to a nice treatment center in Nevada and that is where I met the love of my life; Mrs. Claus. 20SS: Why elves? Why not trolls or gnomes? SC: Well, back in 87, the Elves went on strike. Bitching about long hours and dangerous working conditions. I tried to outsource them to Vale in exchange for some tall Brazillians. Elves are perfectly suited to work in the mine. That didn’t work out so I tried to strike up a deal with Willy Wonka. Trade the Elves for OompaLoompahs. That lasted for about 3 days until I lost it over the incessant singing. “Oompa-Loompah, doopty doo, I’ve got a migraine all because of you”. You never want Orc in a cold environment. They will just start humping everything in sight for warmth. 20SS: In an epic battle for world domination between zombies and unicorns, who would win? SC: That one is easy. Zombicorns would emerge as the dominant species and feast on those sparkly vampire douchebags. Win-win for everyone. 20SS: If you were to go on a tropical vacation, where would it be? SC: I hear Sudbury is really nice this time of year. This body wasn’t designed for the beach. I don’t think anyone but Mrs. Claus is ready for this jelly. 20SS: Do you ever get mad that you have to share the spotlight with Jesus? SC: Oh me and JC are tight. I had a chance to meet him about a month after getting back from rehab. Great guy! You know when you were a kid and you went to the rich kid’s place for their birthday party, they would give you a gift at the end of the party? J.C is a lot like that. He is totally cool with everyone else getting a gift on Christmas. J.C is all about the love and sharing but he isn’t a big fan of people saying X-Mas. He keeps telling me when we get together, “C-Bear! Last time you checked, did you see an X in my last name?” We are thinking about a big team up for next year. Maybe a concert date or two. JC rocks a mean ukulele. 20SS: Can you tell me about your sack? Just how big is it? SC: You are gonna get me in trouble with the missus but since you are on the nice list this year I can say that my sack is always red, always about to burst with goodies and it is only emptied out once a year.

express menu 20SS: WHO IS BEHIND EXPRESS MENU? Jason: My name is Jason Hebert George: And I’m George Van Embden and we’re the ones who started Express Menu. 20SS: WHAT EXACTLY IS EXPRESS MENU? Jason: Express Menu is an online directory of great restaurants in Sudbury, where you can view full menu’s and order food for takeout or delivery right from your computer or smart phone. George: Yes, Express Menu is the fast, easy way to order food online. We make deciding what you want for dinner tonight just a little bit easier. 20SS: WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME FROM? Jason: I was actually chilling with my wife and we REALLY didn’t want to cook anything. So we decided to order take out but wanted to try something different. That’s when I discovered it was nearly impossible to find a good directory of restaurants in Sudbury complete with full menus. The idea grew from there. I just found it crazy that something like this didn’t exist already. George: We expanded on that idea to include online ordering and the project kept getting bigger and bigger. Now the site is a complete E-Commerce website where you can order food and pay using credit, PayPal and even cash on delivery. 20SS: WHY NOT JUST CALL TO ORDER?
George: Oh yeah and don’t forget that we offer delivery services for places you normally wouldn’t be able to get delivery for. Places like Casey’s, the Laughing Buddha, La Casa Mexicana and more. Jason: We are also starting to have lots of cool contests on our Facebook page and on our website. We’ve already given out two $50 gift cards for Wacky Wings and a $50 gift card for the Townehouse. We have a few really big contests coming up where one of our customers can win larger prizes. More on that soon! 20SS: HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN SO FAR? George: So far we’ve been getting a lot of great feedback from both restaurants and from people using the site. This is a completely brand new way of doing things; Sudbury has never had a service exactly like this before. People who have been ordering keep on ordering so that’s always a good sign. Jason: Yeah, we want as much feedback as possible. We built this for a convenience factor so anything we can do to make things easier for both restaurants and people coming to order food, we’ll do. For example, we’re working hard on releasing an iPhone app in the upcoming weeks. 20SS: SO HOW DOES THE SITE WORK? WALK US THROUGH THE ORDERING PROCESS. Jason: It works exactly like any other e-commerce experience you’re already used to. You browse our directory of restaurants and choose what you’d like to order. Add it to your account and check out using PayPal, credit card or cash on delivery. That’s pretty much it.
George: Well, first off we keep signing new restaurants every day so we’re going to have such a great variety of places to choose from. Most people can only think of a few places, we want to encourage people to try new things. There are so many amazing places to eat in Sudbury; we were surprised to find out just how many restaurants are in our city.
George: Once your order is placed the restaurant is notified of your order and then the rest of the process is the same as always. They make your food and deliver it to you or you go and pick it up.
Jason: Online shopping is becoming more and more popular; ordering food online is just an extension of that. It’s nice not to have to call someone, that way you can confirm your order and there’s less of a chance of errors. There’s a huge convenience factor as well, once you create an account you can re-order things you’ve already ordered making it super-fast. But like George mentioned, the biggest thing is the variety. Currently we have about 20 places signed up and more than half are already launched. We plan on doubling that by the New Year.

mitchell jackson 20SS: Tell us a little bit about yourself. MJ: My name is Mitchell Jackson and I am a choreographer, dancer and entrepreneur. I started dancing at the age of 15 in the performing arts program at Sudbury Secondary School. At 16, I joined Happiness is...Dancing and danced competitively for 2 years. After graduating from SSS, I moved to Toronto to take the dance program at George Brown College and pursue a career involving dance. Sharing my passion for dance with my students and peers is what inspires me to grow and evolve in the dance community. I now teach over 1000 students every single week. Almost every weekend I am travelling to teach master classes all over North America. I am absolutely in love with what I do and I love that I get to share that with dancers all over! 20SS: What influenced you to get into dance? MJ: I always knew I loved the arts; I had never really pushed myself to actually try something new. When I had the opportunity to attend a performing arts school I took advantage of the programs they offered. I decided to audition for the dance program at Sudbury Secondary with little to no dance experience. After getting accepted I still wasn’t convinced it was exactly what I wanted to do. After a year of training and being inspired by all of the amazing teachers and dancers in the program, I knew I was on the right path. 20SS: Who is your biggest role model? MJ: Wow, that is an extremely hard question. I have so many influential people in my life. I have to say though that my parents are my biggest role models. They have taught me how to balance everything throughout my career, which I know would have been very difficult without their guidance. 20SS: You are the owner/director of On The Floor, how did this come to be? MJ: Around 2 years ago my best friend Lisa Hupe and I decided to start up a dance competition and convention. We never thought we would be where we are today. So far, On The Floor has sold out at every location and has quadrupled its events since the premier year. The success from the company has been everything we have ever dreamed of and more. Not only have we created a company that gives opportunities to dance communities all over North America, but we are also working with Sick Kids Hospital and this year we have helped raise over $30,000 alone!
20SS: You are from Sudbury but currently living in Toronto, what do you think is the biggest difference between the two cities? MJ: That is a question that people often ask me. I strongly believe that Toronto has more opportunities for someone in the dance industry. One thing that is sure, all of the studio dancers attend the performing arts high schools in Toronto for extra training. This is where Sudbury is lacking. It is very unfortunate that only a handful of the dancers training at studios do not attend Sudbury Secondary, this amazing state of the art facility. The Toronto arts community is much larger, but feels so much more connected because everyone works together. 20SS: Is there room for improvement in Sudbury? MJ: Of course! There is always room for improvement everywhere. I think Sudbury needs to develop a stronger arts council and get people involved that can make a difference and keep it growing. 20SS: What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? MJ: I would have to say some of my biggest accomplishments involve On The Floor. The company has brought me all over the world teaching master classes and choreographing for different companies and studios. This past fall I also directed and choreographed my first show, which was a gala in support of Sick Kids hospital. I am also so grateful that I have had the opportunity to train and work with so many dancers in Toronto who are now dancing for Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and appearing in TV shows such as The Next Step. 20SS: Plans for the future? Where do you see yourself in ten years – where do you see dance in ten years? MJ: I definitely want to keep expanding my business, take dance to the next level in Canada, work more with up and coming artists and choreograph my first tour...or maybe even a music video. I hope dance will continue to be everywhere positively impacting people’s lives. 20SS: If you hadn’t chosen this career, what do you think you would be doing? MJ: I was always an outdoors kid growing up so I think I would be doing something in the landscaping field. I am really happy I found dance, I get to follow my dreams and do what I love to do, every single day. 20SS: Something people might not know about you… MJ: I’m obsessed with cars. https://www.facebook.com/otfdance http://www.onthefloor.ca/ PAGE

Health www.20somethingsudbury.ca
YOUR HEALTHY HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE It’s December – the most wonderful time of the year! You can’t wait to spend some quality time celebrating with family and friends. You’ll get to that eventually, but first there are exams to write, parties to plan, guests to be entertained, a house to decorate, baking to be done, presents to be bought, snow to be shoveled and twentyseven other things that you can’t think of right now! Yes – the holidays are upon us. The holiday season can be a stressful time for many of us. Fortunately, having a plan to deal with the demands of the holidays can drastically reduce the levels of stress you experience during this busy time. Here are some tips to help you through the holiday season. Get Organized Being unorganized is a huge contributor; to holiday stress. Disorganization related stress can lead to many health problems including: anxiety, difficulty sleeping and high blood pressure. You can prevent these problems from occurring by keeping a calendar with important events on it. Making daily to do lists will help you prioritize tasks and will keep you motivated as you cross items off the list. Enjoy the Sunlight Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can be triggered by a lack of sunlight as daylight hours diminish. Combat SAD by spending time outdoors or near windows on sunny days. If this isn’t possible, consider asking your health care professional about light box therapy.

Make Sleep a Priority The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get seven to nine hours of sleep every night. When you meet your body’s sleep requirements you are more likely to be productive, feel happier and experience less stress. Exercise The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommends that adults accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per week. Engaging in physical activity can be an outlet allowing you to escape from the stress of the holidays. Physical activity also promotes the release of endorphins or “feelgood” chemicals in your body which will help to improve your mood. Eat Healthy In periods of stress many turn to comfort foods; the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine warns that many traditional comfort foods are high in fat. These foods should be avoided as they can make you feel lethargic and less able to deal with the demands of the holidays. Instead of turning to comfort foods try some high-fibre, complex-carbohydrates – which have been shown to increase “feel-good” serotonin levels in the body.

Pride and Tradition Laurentian Voyageur Basketball
Basketball season is here! With new additions and a renewed determination the Voyageurs promise to bring you an exciting, action packed season. We sat down with Danielle Harris from the women’s team and Alex Ratte from the men’s team to find out what fans can expect this season. 20SS: What is your biggest strength as a team this year? AR: Everyone knows their role. We are playing well together as a team and no one tries to go out of their element. DH: We’ve really been working at hustling – being the first to dive for a loose ball and putting forth 100% of our effort. 20SS: What is your biggest challenge as a team this year? AR: Staying focused throughout the year is a challenge for us. It’s easy to get exhausted when we are practicing three hours a day. The key to being successful is staying focused. DH: Overcoming culture change is probably our biggest challenge this year. We have new additions to our coaching staff and a new head coach this year, so there are a lot of changes to the way we do things. 20SS: What games should fans watch for – are there any particular teams you are matched well with? AR: Ottawa U and Ryerson. We’ve had a rivalry against Ryerson. We’ve had some close games with them and have played them in the playoffs – they’ve been scrappy games. DH: York. We are well matched with them and we’ve always had close games against them. 20SS: What is your goal as a team this year? AR: We want to make it to nationals this year and be in the top eight – that’s the ultimate goal. DH: We want to make it to the playoffs. We haven’t made it since I’ve been playing here, but it’s a goal I know we’re capable of. We’ve also been focusing on getting back to “Pride and Tradition” standards – the foundation that the Voyageur program was built on.
