20SS: Touring must be something else as well. Any specific moments stick out to you? PGW: We have a knack for getting ourselves into weird and bizarre situations on the road. Too many stories to tell. Most recently, we broke down at the top of a mountain pass east of Salmo, BC, and were stranded in town for four days. By the time our van was fixed, half of us were working part-time at the local diner, and we were all sleeping in an RV owned by the very generous woman who ran the restaurant. 20SS: As a band from Sudbury, which local bands/people have influenced you? PGW: Sudbury and the people that live there are a constant influence and inspiration for us. The names of our friends show up in our songs often, and we compulsively make reference to places in or around Sudbury- especially Manitoulin Island, where we recorded our second full-length record. As for bands and people, there are probably too many to talk about here. I’d say any of the bands the Houle brothers have been in (Strange Attractor, Statues, Varge!) provide a good benchmark with regards to quality. Mark Browing (Ox) and Brian Dunn (Brian Dunn Band) are a good inspiration with regards to work ethic and productivity as well.
PISTOL GEORGE WARREN
20SS: Tell us a bit about your new EP, Hoots Deuce.
BY :: ALEX JOLY
THE NAME ITSELF IS BADASS. THE BAND, EVEN BETTER. PGW IS MADE UP OF EIGHT (!) MEMBERS, MOSTLY PICKED FROM THE SUDBURY MUSIC SCENE. (ONE MEMBER IS FROM WINNIPEG) KNOWN FOR THEIR GENRE-BENDING SOUND, PGW GOES FROM BLUES, TO COUNTRY, TO ROCK, ALL BACKED BY A GROUP OF MAGNIFICENT WOMAN BELTING THEIR SOULS ON EVERY TRACK. WE CAUGHT UP WITH PISTOL GEORGE WARREN WHILE THEY WERE TOURING WESTERN CANADA, PROMOTING THEIR FOURTH RELEASE HOOTS DEUCE. 20SS: How exactly did PGW come about? With such a large group there must have been a process. PGW: Pistol George Warren didn’t start as an especially big band. Initially there were six of us who came together with the intention of starting a more serious group than some of our members had been in the past. However, as we started playing better shows and writing more mature songs, we got the itch to have a trio of backup singers - we were listening to a lot of Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding, and other soul stuff that made use of sort of conversational interactions between lead singers and others. So we ended up with a big ninepiece band that has gone through changes here and there ever since. 20SS: What is it like having so many members in the band? How does it affect the song writing process? PGW: Our songwriting process has always been the same- one of us (usually Maty) writes a song, and then the rest of us collaborate on the arrangement and it evolves from there. I think the biggest influence our size as a band has on the music - aside from being able to try more complex musical ideas than before- is that we have that many more people to bounce ideas off of and that many more people to contribute their own creativity. Since adding the girls, for example, a lot of songs will come together now after Maty and one or two of them have sat down and experimented with it. A lot of people assume that having a big band makes things more difficult from an organizational standpoint, but the truth is we’re on the same page more often than not, and we hang out together all the time, band related or not.
PAGE

20SS: Your videos are always very original. Who comes up with the ideas? Do you guys make them yourselves? PGW: We come up with ideas for music videos all the time. Most of them are impossible to pull off. In general we have produced our own videos in the past with a lot of help from friends. The Front Porch video was made largely by our friends Tony and Kate and couldn’t have happened if a whole bunch of our friends hadn’t been willing to give up a whole day and indulge us in our madness. 20SS: What’s next for PGW? PGW: Well, we’re on the road right now driving feverishly to Edmonton from Crowsnest where we slept last night. We play there today, and then in Winnipeg tomorrow. After that, we’re playing at the Townehouse on the 23rd, and then probably taking some time to work on new material and maybe do a few shows in Southern Ontario before the New Year! ALBUM REVIEW THE THROWAWAY KIDS - SCORE:
PGW: Hoots Deuce is the first release of ours that we recorded, produced, and mixed ourselves. We were generously offered free access to the Theater Cambrian space downtown which was awesome- it’s an old church and has really cool acoustics and reverb - and we set up and recorded there in one day. It’s an EP as opposed to a full-length, and I suppose it represents a bit of a change stylistically for us; the songs are still poppy, but they’re a little more ambitious and there’s a bit of a new wave influence mixed in with our previous aesthetics.

Industry Fave Where do you work Speakeasy Sudbury, 113 Durham St. 705.222.EASY Favourite part of what you do I honestly have the coolest job. I get to hang out with friends, have private dance parties, and listen to cool bands every night. Upcoming events at your work Every Monday is open mic night. Every Tuesday Hugh Jazz performs. Wednesday is anything from silent film to spoken word. Thursday, Friday and Saturday we have live bands. Something interesting people don’t know about you I am also an animator/artist Craziest thing that has ever happened to you while working Sometimes we like to scare people at the bar. So Eric Johnson and I decided to play a prank on Eric Plangger, a fellow co-worker and musician (Hugh Jazz). So I got Erica to wear this black morph suit, (which is an entire head to toe black spandex cover outfit) and hide downstairs. That’s when I lured Eric to go downstairs because there was “something” left for him down there. It was dark and creepy. So as he is down there looking for said object, Erica creeps up on him and scares him. His reaction was pretty hilarious, and he was a good sport about it.

When you aren’t working, what can you be found doing? I spend a lot of time at home working on upcoming art shows. I have one in October for the Sudbury Burlesque Halloween show. October 30, 31 and November 1st at the Fromagerie on Elgin. I will be doing a series of paintings of some of our local girl/guys in the show in the style of pin ups.

After a summer of bloated blockbusters like “The Lone Ranger” and pedestrian, unfunny comedies like “Grown Ups 2”, it kind of feels like Hollywood is running out of steam. A little while ago, movie legends Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predicted an implosion of Hollywood which will be caused by studios over reliance on remakes, sequels and franchises that will eventually collapse under their own mega-budgets. If you are like me and you are perhaps a little sick of seeing New York getting destroyed by aliens or zombies or zombie-alien poodles, I highly suggest you cleanse your film palate and partake in some of the amazing cinema that is running during Cinefest Sudbury from September 14th to 21st. Cinefest has been bringing their audience world class cinema, informative industry panels and some of the best parties I have ever been kicked out of for 25 years. With upwards of 60 films over five days, there is a wonderful variety of genres and styles to choose from. Festival organizer, Tammy Frick says, “it is kind of like a mini Sundance in that we are bringing the top Canadian and world indie films to Sudbury.” One of my favorite portions of the festival is the Curfew Breakers programming. If you are new to the Cinefest experience and want to check out some of the coolest cult flicks of the year, I highly recommend checking it out. Cinefest Sudbury also offers some great opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. Whether you are schmoozing at the galas or absorbing the Cinema Summit sessions, Cinefest gives you wonderful networking opportunities. More than just the films, the galas and the panels, Cinefest Sudbury has been a successful cultural staple for 25 years because of the drive and passion that everyone, from the audiences to the volunteers, share for cinema. “Oh...back to school...back to school...to prove to Dad that I am not a fool...” - Billy Madison How in the hell do the summer days start to accelerate in the last couple of weeks of August? Let’s say it is August 4th and you are sipping on brewskis with your friends on a sunny patio. Life is good. Summer is awesome and you are working on a pretty solid day drunk. Somewhere between your fourth or fifth wobblypop, you start to feel really good. You think to yourself, “I am pretty sure I could stay on this patio forever.” Suddenly, one of your idiot friends ruins your reverie by asking, “when do we start school again?” It is understandable that if in this moment, you decide to flip the table, dummy your buddy with a left hook and sit back down, calmly sipping your beer and changing the subject back to the current economic and socio-political ramifications of the uprising in Egypt (hahaha...just kidding...I know you were talking about sex) Ladies and gentlemen, although we don’t want to hear it, much like winter, school is coming. For the love of Mike, Staples has been trying to sell you pens and pencils since the Canada long weekend! You can’t escape it but how do you make it easier? All I can do is offer you some advice and hope that you take it. The following tips are crucial to ensuring that you’re year at school is the most nut-blazing, mind-scorching, face-melting year of your life (sorry for all the heat related adjectives but I am BBQing as I write this).
It is absolutely crucial for the up and coming 20 something to know how to multitask. You are juggling assignments, extra-curricular activities, socializing etc. There isn’t going to be enough time in the day to get it all in a really enjoy it. That is why something’s should be done in tandem. For instance, say you are struggling to finish that 3000 word paper that is due tomorrow but you want to go to the pub for country night. Bring your laptop down to the pub and order yourself a beer. Sit down, open your laptop and leave a $50.00 on the keyboard with the start of your essay on the screen. Someone is bound to come by and finish it for you. NOTE: If you are at Laurentian, you might get it back in French. 2. Dating Going back to school is an exciting time with many new and familiar faces everywhere. Often times, these people will have faces that you want to make out with and that is fine! I say go for it! Just be patient and play it cool. Take it from me that you should introduce yourself first before you try to examine someone’s tonsils with your tongue. Even if you are in pre-med, you should still introduce yourself. (And don’t call yourself a Doctor until you graduate, ya douche) 3. Bullies Bullies can be everywhere, not just on the grade school playground or in my case, at my Uncle’s retirement home. Some people just don’t grow up. Others are just sadistic bastards with daddy issues. Whatever kind of bully you have encountered, here is some sure fire advice that I learned from HBO’s prison drama “Oz” On the first day of school, walk into the cafe and scan the crowd with your meanest face. Once you have found the biggest, most bad ass person in the place, walk over and punch them in the face as hard as you can. This will establish dominance and no one will make you their “wife” in the showers. You will be surprised at how many comparisons you can make between college and prison. Until next time my friends, play safe, be kind to your fellow students, study hard and... hahahahahaa...I can’t even type that sentence without laughing. Just don’t get kicked out. Your parents are paying good money!! PAGE

The Spotlight www.20somethingsudbury.ca
S U C R MA 20SS: What influenced you to pick up a stick and start playing hockey? MF: Most likely my dad. I am lucky to have a dad who went through 15 NHL seasons in his hockey career. He definitely was the one to put the hockey stick in my hands. Then having an older brother Nick. He needed someone to shoot at, so I was always goalie. 20SS:Playing hockey in Northern Ontario – what was that like for you? Do you think it helped you get to where you are today? MF: I remember when I lived in the states and playing hockey there wasn’t as big as it was in Northern Ontario. When I moved to Sudbury, Ontario I realized how big hockey was at such a young age. My dad was coaching the Sudbury Wolves and I remember going to all the Wolves games when I was 13. Ever since that, I was committed to making it to the Ontario Hockey League and playing for the Wolves one day. I was very happy to be playing in a town with an OHL team. 20SS: Hockey seems to be in your blood, your dad is a former player and your brother currently plays – What is it like watching them play? Do you think this has been a motivator for you to pursue your hockey career? MF: I was four when my dad retired so I don’t remember much but I do remember some games when he finished his hockey career in Florida. I watched old tapes of him when he used to play, so I do remember when he played for the Leafs and Sabres. Obviously playing for the Buffalo Sabres, fans come up to me and always tell me about when they watched my dad play. It is an honour to play for the same NHL team he played for. My brother Nick is a huge reason why I am where I am today. It is great to watch Nick play, he’s a great player and a hard worker. He’s my workout partner in the summer time, he has always been there to push me and help guide me. Playing against Nick in the NHL is an amazing achievement for both of us because when we were little we always talked about playing in that league together. It would be great to play on a team with him one day.

20SS: You grew up in Sudbury, you still spend time here – what would you say is your favorite thing about this city? What has you coming back? MF: I love how the community is very close, it’s a small town that cares. People are willing to help out others and obviously playing here for the Sudbury Wolves made me appreciate all the people that support their team. I have a lot of friends and family that live here so it is great to come back. After the hockey season is done I love coming back to Sudbury and relaxing on long lake. Sudbury will always be a place to call home.
O N G I L FO
The Spotlight www.20somethingsudbury.ca
20SS: What do you look forward to most when getting ready for a game? MF: I’m just excited to play, having a chance to win is what I mostly look forward to.
20SS: Playing for Buffalo, your favorite part of what you do? How does it feel to play in front of all of those people? MF: Playing the game I love is my favourite part. You never get bored of showing up to the rink every day and always trying to get better. It is a dream come true to play in the NHL and you just want to make sure that you are working hard everyday to keep the dream alive for as long as you can. Playing in front of Buffalo fans is amazing! Every home game in Buffalo is sold out and playing in other teams rinks is a lot of fun too! 20SS: What is your mindset during a game, do you have a pregame ritual? MF: Preparation before you play a game is key. Some of the older guys on my team who are more experienced have their own ways of warming up to prepare for a game. My pregame ritual is to eat my pregame meal at a local Italian restaurant called Chef’s at 12:00 a.m. I take a pre game nap from 1:30 3:30, if it is a 7:00 p.m. game I get to the rink at 4:45p.m. I tape my sticks then do a warm up to get loose. I play soccer for 20 minutes and when I get dressed I always tie my left skate first. This may seem like a lot but trust me there are other guys who are worse!
20SS: What has been your greatest athletic accomplishment to date? MF: Playing for team Canada in 2011 World Juniors and being drafted by the Buffalo Sabres are my two greatest athletic accomplishments. Playing for team Canada is something I’ll never forget and getting drafted was always a goal of mine since I was little. 20SS: When you aren’t on the ice, what are some other things you can be found doing? Any hidden talents? MF: If it is summer time I love being on the water, fishing and water sports are two things I love to do. During the hockey season I’m mostly trying out new places to eat or watching movies and starting new TV shows. Not too many hidden talents, I wish I had some. 20SS: How are you preparing for next season? Tips for aspiring hockey players MF: Whenever you finish a hockey season you like to summarize that year and focus on things you need to work on. For the summer you start training and always work hard to become a better hockey player/ athlete. You never want to be happy where you are, there are always things to improve on. Have fun while you are doing it too.

Bobby Mcintosh Bobby McIntosh... He is one half of Dead Celebrity Status; a Canadian hip-hop group from Sudbury, Ontario. He’s collaborated with artists such as Dave Navarro and Joss Stone, toured with some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop, but he still has tons of love for his hometown Your new album “The Throwaway Kids” just released with great success, how does it feel? We’ve been away from the music industry for 7 years. To come back and be embraced like we are right now is actually kind of shocking for us. We figured it would take some time to come back and get to where we were, but to release at number 7 on iTunes, and get the positive reviews and support from fans and critics, is really amazing. We’re blessed in that regard. How have you changed since your last album? We changed as artists and people. We were able to get out of the music industry and take a look at it from a different vantage point, which was incredibly advantageous for us. Also, we both went back to school at Laurentian University and finished our degrees, which helped us grow as people. Because of our personal growth, we were able to grow as artists. Why did you choose to come back home to Sudbury? Obviously there are the advantages (of Laurentian) over big schools such as smaller class sizes and more one on one, but it was also crucial in allowing us to step back from Toronto and the music industry. It rejuvenated us; I feel as hungry as I did when I first started, with the same passion for the music. When you’re inside that bubble, you can get kind of lost. What can we expect next from DCS? Expect a lot of touring. We’re known for our extensive touring; it must be our Sudbury work ethic! We’re going to be touring everywhere we can and reaching out to our fans. Expect a lot hard work; it’s going to be a big year for us. Be sure to check out Dead Celebrity Status’ latest album “The Throwaway Kids” on iTunes, and be sure to keep an eye out for their next big show in Sudbury. www.deadcelebstatus.com facebook.com/DCSTATUS Twitter - @dcstatus

Sorreau
20SS: What is Sorreau? Sorreau is clothing & apparel brought to you by the creative minds of Evan Eisenhour and Mireille Guenette. 20SS: Who started Sorreau? We originally started our line about four years ago after meeting at Cambrian College. Evan pursued silkscreen printing and Mireille moved to London to continue her studies in fashion design. Most of the pieces we made back then we would give away to friends and family. After finishing school Mireille moved back home to Sudbury. She started working at Gina’s fabrics; Gina wanting to retire, offered us an opportunity we had only dreamed. Owning our own store! 20SS: What kind of things can we find there? So after taking Art & Design at Cambrian, I decided to pursue silkscreen printing. I love music; listening, collecting and playing as well. Mostly heavier stuff but I like all sorts. I like being outside skateboarding, snowboarding or just hanging with friends. Mireille - I’m from Sudbury born and raised. I’ve always loved sewing, dressing up, and anything crafty. I took Art & Design at Cambrian College where I met Evan, we started making clothing for fun. I then moved to London and took fashion design at Fanshawe College. I enjoy snowboarding, music festivals, camping, wine, roller skating, costumes, and candy. 20SS: Favourite part of what you do? Mireille – I love working on really different projects, and when people are really excited about what we do. 20SS: Thoughts on being an entrepreneur in Sudbury… It’s tough at times; our clients make it all worth it. 20SS: When you aren’t at Sorreau, what can you be found doing? Freshmen 15: A ‘How Not To’ Guide For The Student Body By Jay Baxter-Derro
Every year September arrives, school starts and student’s aspirations of a healthier lifestyle are motivated by the promise of new social endeavors that accompany university life. Like many universities, Laurentian’s Athletic Center is of free use to students, and boasts a multimillion dollar facility appealing to any athlete looking to become a Voyageur. However, this article is not for athletes or frequent gym go-ers. This article is for the average Joe looking to avoid acquiring that first year belly, or shed some weight they picked up in the offseason. The “Freshmen 15’ is an ancient term used to describe the post-secondary pounds many students put on, often times, without even realizing. We at, 20 Something Sudbury, decided to take a short look at the trends and factors that define this common woe, and to give you some strategies to avoid becoming a more-soft sophomore. Callen McGibbon is the strength and conditioning coach at Healthy Living; which works in partnership with Laurentian University. He has been working with LU for over 10 years and defines the ‘freshmen 15’ as “being prepared for university life and not being prepared to cook for yourself.” Many of us take for granted the mom prepared lunch we grabbed every morning on our way to homeroom, and Cal estimates that, “only 30% of on-campus students prepare daily meals for themselves.” Most people (not just students) attribute their convenient eating habits to their timetable. There is no doubt, many students have heavy academic workloads and would rather use that extra thirty minutes to catch up on sleep. According to a syndicated study published by Toronto’s StudentAward Inc; “post-secondary students living on campus spend an average of ($317.00) eating out a month” and that’s number that you AND your parents can lose some sleep over. Cal puts that stat into perspective very simply, “In ten minutes you can eat, 2,000 calories without even realizing it. But in 10 minutes of exercise, you burn about 80 calories.” Discouraging isn’t it? The other factor important to put down (on paper) is the consumption of alcohol. Partying and social events account for many memories graduates take with them when they leave school. This factor is probably the most recognized role player in belly gain for students.
In short, the impulsive habits many busy students practice day-to-day, does not reflect a healthy lifestyle. It is our responsibility to take control our student body. Here are five strategies Cal provided to help the average Joe prevent and/or overcome the ‘Freshmen 15’: 1) Purchase Tupperware (4x4x2) and prepare your food for the day. 2) Join intermural sports. 3) Track fitness progress and caloric intake through one of the many mobile applications found in ‘The App Store’. 4) Avoid drinking. Limit eating out. 5) Set realistic goals for yourself.
