A Fresh Start make 2013 a healthy year

W

ith another year over and a new one just beginning, most of us are struggling to find a fix to our holiday weight gain or lack of fitness. January always brings an onslaught of New Year’s Resolutions that for most usually go unattained. Here are a few pitfalls most people encounter and how to stop them from ruining your progress. Many of us are so eager and guilt ridden from the holidays that we jump into a new diet or exercise routine too quickly and have unrealistic expectations. This can cause you to burn out and give up. If you went to the gym two or three times a week before the holidays, don’t expect to start going six times a week on your resolution. Take the time and set both short and long-term goals that are specific and realistic.

Short-term goals are usually one week at a time. Long-term goals can be anywhere from one month to one year. The more specific and realistic you make them, the easier it will be to track, and ultimately achieve. Remember if you choose to be healthier this year, it’s a yearlong process, so take your results day by day. This will be a lifestyle change and could take anywhere from four to eight weeks before you see results. Finally we all have weak moments and can slip from our diet or exercise routine. THIS IS OKAY! Don’t let it happen too often, but if it does the overall goal is not lost and the work you have put in prior is still valid. Take the day after a cheat as a fresh start and a chance to begin again.

FOR ALL YOUR PRINTING NEEDS

www.northernprintbrokers.com

Stay strong this New Year and reach your goals!

Healthy Tips: r r r r r r r r

Eat 6 small meals/day instead of 2-3 big ones. Include lots of fresh vegetables all day long Eat your fruit before noon and with other food Have protein with each meal Drink lots of water Aim for 30 min of cardio three to six times a week (remember to start slower rather than faster) Train with weights two to four times per week Don’t give up – a healthy lifestyle is not far away February 2013 | 9

Sarah Kruk | 25 Bartender @Peddler’s Pub Favourite part about working at Peddler’s: It doesn’t even feel like I’m working, it feels as if I’m just playing hostess to the best party in town. Listening to great bands, talking to interesting people and hanging out with the best staff in the world. I love every part of it. What upcoming event are you most excited for: Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday we have live bands in, but I would have to say the event I’m most excited for is St. Patty’s Day!!! It’s the biggest party of the year for us. Something interesting people don’t know about you: My birthday is on St. Patty’s Day. What is your favourite drink: I’m a shot kind of girl. Tequila and a shot of clamato and let’s get the party started.

What is the craziest thing that’s happened to you at work: Hands down had to be my second shift. The Backstreet Boys were playing a concert at the arena and decided to come and have a drink at Peddler’s afterwards. I had the biggest crush on them growing up! It was like my dream came true. Lol! A little to late, but better late than never. Fictional character that best describes you: The Tasmanian devil, crazy, hyper, and can’t stop moving, oh and making messes everywhere. What do you do when you’re not at work? When I’m not at work I like to spend time with friends, family, and my new puppy Frankie Boner McWeinershniztle. I like to shop, go for drinks and draw. Also I do some esthetics out of my house and at others houses.

Brad Terrell | 21 Hometown: Richmond, BC School: Psychology at Laurentian University Favorite part of doing what you do: I love seeing students at the end of class completely at peace with themselves and experiencing such blissful state! What is NEKA: NEKA is an acronym for New Earth Knowledge Alliance. NEKA is a young and conscious business with fresh ideas promoting a life style. It’s more than just yoga and meditation. It’s mission includes ancient knowledge and wisdom of energetic therapies such as yoga and meditation, to heal and to create a new and positive future for our community and generations to come, that imitates peace, prosperity, health and happiness. Helping Sudburian’s with their spiritual transformation! Where is NEKA located: NEKA’s studio is currently located at Quinta Essentia Tea Bistro at 4-1685 LaSalle blvd. Across from RBC. What are the next steps for NEKA: NEKA’s goal is to eventually be located all over Sudbury, to heal as many people as possible. Hoping to get involved with the education system and implement yoga and meditation in schools. What is your experience with Yoga and Meditation: At the age of 12, I went to Ghana, Africa where my father introduced me to meditation. When I returned this interest rapidly grew by practicing and reading different authors such as Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle.

Neka Yoga | @nekayoga w w w. n e k ayo g a . c o m

When I was 14 my father purchased for me my first Yoga DVD. Then I went out to purchase more DVDs, increasing my practice and passion. One summer I dislocated my knee (sports injury), for physiotherapy I practiced yoga in my back yard for about two to three hours every day that summer. By the end of the season, I could preform almost all yoga positions, my knee felt as good as ever and I was totally zen! I thought if yoga can help me this much I must teach and help others. So I planned a trip across the world in search of real yogic knowledge!

Friday, Feb 8 9:30 pm Rainbow Cinemas SBTUESDAYS

Drinking pop on a Thursday just feels weird.

What classes do you teach: I teach Vinyassa Flow, Hatha, Ashtanga, Power, Yogalaties, Kundalini, Iyengar and Yin Yoga. I use multiple techniques such us Solfeggio Harmonics, Transcendental Meditation(TM), Vipasssana, as well as Mantra, Mudra and Pranayama for meditation. How has the response been: The response in Sudbury has been great! Mostly female responses, as some males in the community tend to be a little intimidated by the idea of yoga, caused by it’s unfamiliarity, which I foresee changing in the next couple of years. Dream Job: Doing it right now! Eventually teaching yoga and mediation at a University level. Things you do for fun: Martial arts, photography, DJ, hockey, soccer, downhill ski, cook healthy organic foods, indulge in deep conversations and hang out with friends. And of course, my personal yoga and meditation! Anything to add: Spread the love.

this month’s music Musician of the Month Michael John Paul Kenny | 21 | Almighty Rhombus https://soundcloud.com/michaelkenny Tell me about your upcoming shows: In terms of shows for February, we’re playing with Minotaurs and Bandit, on February 16th at the Townehouse. I’m really excited to play some new material from our upcoming full length record, which should be out in the summer. I’m also gonna be recording a solo record before the summer.

What band are you in: I play guitar, sing and write the songs in the Almighty Rhombus and do some solo recording as well. What are your main influences: I’m a big fan of Paul McCartney, Elliot Smith, any project from Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Homme. I like to write short songs and I feel like Jay Reatard had a direct influence on me in that respect as he does that quite a bit. I also really enjoy listening to Ian Curtis (Joy Division) and other prolific figures like Henry Rollins (Black Flag) and David Byrne (Talking Heads). Non-musical influences include herbs, nature, The Toronto Blue Jays, Playstation 3 and Arizona Iced Tea. What is your favourite album: I can’t really choose one but if you held a gun to my head, I’d say it’s a tie between “Is This It” by The Strokes and “Breakfast In America” by Supertramp. If ever stranded on a desolate island, I would hope that these two records could make the trip as well.

Can you recommend any music to us: I’ve been listening to a ton of hip-hop lately so I’m really into Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Death Grips. For bands though, I strongly recommend Tame Impala, Real Estate, Young Rival and Tennis. What is your favourite venue: If we’re talking about Sudbury; the Townehouse Tavern by a long shot. It is a beneficial place for bands to play as they get paid and are given a chance to play to a wide variety of people. I really like Massey Hall in Toronto as well. Not a bad seat in the house and the sound is excellent. What has been your favourite show: Opening for Yukon Blonde at the Townehouse as part of the Northern Lights Festival. What’s your favourite part about being a musician in Sudbury: Getting to write and sing about whatever I want and being able to perform. Sense of community. Good people. Cheap beer. Everyone does something different and pushes each other to try to be better in a sense. It’s like a communal progression.

WHAT ARE WE LISTENING TO? Kanye West - Clique (TNGHT Edit) Disclosure - Latch Ft. Sam Smith Dada Life - So Young So High (Dillon Francis Remix) A$AP Rocky - 1 Train, Suddenly Cold War Kids - Miracle Mile Of Monsters and Men - King & Lionheart (Dzeko and Torres rmx) MØ - Glass Andy’s Ill - The Big Beautiful Nothing Azealia Banks - No Problems Skrillex - Reason Underworld - Rex (Bassnectar Remix) For more check out http://soundofsilv.blogspot.

spotlight The latest installment of Rhythmworks Takeover Friday’s featured Dim Mak’s taste maker: AutoÉrotique

The veteran Canadian duo represents one of many bright spots in Canadian dance music and has had releases with global influence on Musical Freedom, Dim Mak and a host of others. Of course, this created an exceptionally ratchet night full of bass inspired debauchery. As an A&R representative (the person at the label who pics the music they release) Keith (the touring member of AutoÉrotique) brought the crowd some hot-off-the press, fresh, and new Dim Mak releases combined with AÉ’s latest unreleased production on Skrillex’s OWSLA label.

AutoÉrotique took the time to talk with us via e-mail to discuss music, the weather, and what artists to look out for in 2013. It was -22oC the night of your show in Sudbury, where is the coldest place you’ve ever played? The coldest place I've ever played was a ski resort somewhere, it was an outdoor setup and it was freezing. On Facebook your two major influences are kind of vague... When it comes to inspiration for making music, who did you and Dave look up to in the beginning? Give us some throwback jams that really got you interested in this line of work. Groove Armada, Daft Punk, MSTRKRFT, DJ Shadow and early Armand van Helden, DJ Shadowing's 'Entroducing' and Helden's 'Sample Slayer' are two of our early favorites. You toured with Dim Mak head Steve Aoki in the past year, what is your most memorable moment from that? Too many to count, Steve is a ton of fun to tour with. I think a highlight of 2012 with Steve was cliff diving into the Mediterranean in Greece!

So we've learned you're involved in Dim Mak's A&R, what acts should we look out for in 2013 Oh man, 2013 is all about Botnek, Dzeko and Torres, Torro Torro, Charlie Darker, Sleepy Tom and a couple more. You’re not a stranger to Sudbury. Any memorable moments? Sleeping beside the Big Nickel. We heard you went to a Wolves game when you were here in Sudbury, how did you like it? I've caught two Wolves games so far, and if I could, I'd catch one everytime! On a scale of 1-10, how amazing was last night? 11. Wow. Be sure to check out AutoÉrotique: Soundcloud.com/autoerotique Twitter @autoerotique and Facebook.com/autoerotique.

City’s World citysworld.blogspot.ca

Shred. You want to snowboard or ski. Why wouldn’t you? Snowboarding & skiing is super cool. There are a couple of hills around town. Let me show you: Adanac Ski Hill | New Sudbury 744 Beatrice Crescent

Onaping Ski Hill | Onaping Regional Road 8

Mt. Durfour | Elliot Lake 10 Ski Hill Road

Adanac is the hill I've called home since picking up my board four years ago. Riders take a cozy, two man chair lift to the top, where they are greeted by a mini park. It's not as substantial as their parks in recent years, but it offers four features that are fun to session, and a couple of small jumps (be sure to pump for speed). However, the best part of about Adanac is that there are always, without a doubt, little natural features to hit. The big hip, the shrubbery gap, and the rock jib, all of which are around back on Easy Rider. When the powder falls, "charging the main" and powder slashes are super fun.

Right off the main drag, Onaping Ski Hill is a gem. All runs are carved out of pure Sudbury forests, giving the entire hill a back country feel. Not only does this natural terrain give off super good vibes, it also provides many BIG natural features. There are several spots throughout the entire hill where catching fifteen, twenty feet is the norm. There's also a rock quarter pipe, and all around a lot of fun things to do.

One of the North's best kept secrets, Mt. Dufour offers something for all riders. There are seven runs (3 green, 1 blue, 3 black), giving riders options while boasting one of the best vertical inclines in the North. They also offer a terrain park (which Pinnacle Sports and City's World will be developing), as well as a beginners hill with its own lift. Lessons are available.

If you're just starting out, Adanac also offers a bunny hill, where beginners can take lessons or learn at their own pace. Lively Ski Hill | Lively 231 First Ave

Onaping is also the home of snowboarding school, Level X. Jay Levac and Stu Munro are super cool dudes, and will get you shredding in no time. If you already know how to snowboard, but want to progress or learn a new trick, they can get you to where you want to be. The only drawback (if you see it as one) is that the hill runs on a t-bar system. There are two t-bars, that take riders to the top #legworkout.

Another major plus for Durfour is the non-existence of lift lines. This is because of their two lifts (one of which is a quad), laps are quick, giving riders the opportunity to dial in all the runs they want. So, there you have it. Now grab your snowboard (or skis) and get out there. Have fun, and wear a helmet :)

This modest hill is great for beginners, as it offers multiple short and wide runs with a gentle slope (aka butterz for dayzzzz). The platter (disc) lift operators are experienced and patient with beginners and are happy to slow the lift as needed. Lively Ski Hill is also enjoyed by many experienced riders, as there are a handful of hand-made jumps and small boxes to session. The snow guns have been blasting, and the concession stand is now stocked and warm.
