ART AND SOCIAL COMMENTARY This evening focuses on the exhibitions US-Mexico Border: Place, Imagination and Possibility and Art of Politics. Hear a panel on social commentary in art moderated by Andrew Connors and including artists Jami Porter Lara and Carlos Contreras. Print a political poster with screen printers Jon Sanchez and Jeremy Montoya. Enjoy music by Baracutanga, a group of musicians that aims to promote intercultural experiences that empower Latinos with a positive message of self-affirmation. Free event.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 27 1–2 P.M. LECTURE: THE US-MEXICO BORDER: PLACE, IMAGINATION, AND POSSIBILITY Exhibition curator Lowery Stokes Sims discusses how the border serves as a catalyst for initiating social engagement and cultural dialogue for artists and designers working today. Sims curated the main exhibition
at 516 ARTS. The Albuquerque Museum’s partner exhibition features works from artists Bob Haozous, Luis Jimenez and Jami Porter Lara, among others. Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, recently named one of the Most Influential Curators by Artsy, is the retired Curator Emerita at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. Talk included with admission.

OPENING OF MAKING AFRICA: A CONTINENT OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN Making Africa features the work of over 100 artists and designers working in cities throughout Africa today. At 1 p.m. listen to Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi, PhD, Curator of African Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art as he explores the historical roots of and contemporary influences on artists working in Africa today. OPERA SOUTHWEST SEMINAR: BLESS ME ULTIMA Singers, musical and artistic staff will offer their perspectives on the opera, providing an in-depth view for a deeper understanding and enjoyment of the performance. BURQUE NOIR Burque Noir is the guest curator of this 3rd Thursday held in conjunction with the exhibition Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design. Burque Noir is a locally run organization that champions the expansive visual and performance art of black people. They will curate an evening of multi-media experience of arts and entertainment as delivered by a vast array of black artists and performers.

The main exhibition is hosted by 516 Arts in partnership with the University of New Mexico Art Museum and organized by renowned guest curator Lowery Stokes Sims.
OPENS FEBRUARY 3 MAKING AFRICA: A CONTINENT OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN Showcasing the work of over 120 artists and designers, Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design illustrates how design accompanies and fuels economic and political changes on the continent. Africa is presented as a hub of experimentation generating new approaches and solutions of worldwide relevance—and as a driving force for a new discussion of the potential of design in the twenty-first century.
THROUGH JUNE 2018 PAUL SARKISIAN A retrospective installation of work by Paul Sarkisian proves the power of continuous innovation, and the importance of mastery
of technique before an artist can create masterpieces reflecting his vision.
THROUGH APRIL 4 ART OF POLITICS Issues of race and identity engage viewers on both aesthetic and sociopolitical levels. Curated by Ben Maseman, a senior at Amy Biehl High School, this exhibition of works on paper from the Albuquerque Museum’s permanent collection explores a variety of identities, places, and cultures to demonstrate the similarities and connections between seemingly separate struggles.
THROUGH MAY 20 MANSIONS, MOTORING, AND MILLENNIALS Dramatic transformations occurred in Franz Huning's Highland Addition neighborhood along Central Avenue from the late 19th century to present day. The first neighborhood platted after the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad laid tracks to Albuquerque in 1880, municipal development had an impact on residential neighborhoods.

Our story is told through four galleries: Spirited, Courageous, Resourceful and Innovative, all connecting to a central gallery entitled Our Land. Hundreds of our city’s most beloved artifacts are featured, including the display case from Fred Harvey’s Alvarado Curio Shop, the 8th Duke of Albuquerque’s Repostero, and arms and artifacts from Coronado’s Entrada.
