In 2011, the Moreland Council will once again support the Brunswick Music Festival as the Principal Public Partner. Over its twenty three year history Moreland has supported the Brunswick Music Festival significantly and our continued support of this internationally recognised festival indicates Council’s strong commitment to the promotion of the arts in our community. As always, the festival opens with two exciting free community events. On Saturday 26 February Moreland City Council presents ‘Music for the People’ in the new location of Bridges Reserve, Coburg. Audiences are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the concert from 1 – 5 pm featuring The Jellytub Rollers, Flap! and Papa Chango. The Sydney Road Street Party will then be held on Sunday 6 March. With six music stages, culturally diverse food, craft stalls and street entertainment, the Sydney Road Street Party is a great opportunity to celebrate our community and the unique identity of Moreland. I would like to congratulate Performing Arts Moreland for their exceptional work throughout the year and thank the many wonderful artists who I’m sure will make this festival a most memorable one. The Brunswick Music Festival presents a special opportunity for artists and audiences to come together and take part in a ‘feast’ of music. Welcome to the 23rd Brunswick Music Festival and the 17th Sydney Road Street Party. The 2011 program is looking good, with some exceptional International and Australian shows including some important CD launches, special one off festival collaborations, and some excellent new artists appearing at the festival for the first time. Our tickets sales last year made it one of our most successful, and it would be wonderful indeed if we could at least equal that set of figures. We are however subject to the same rising costs as everybody else in the community and therefore you will notice a slight increase in a few ticket prices, although overall our average ticket price will be approximately the same as in 2010. I’d like to emphasise that we do exist in a growing festival market, and direct competition for ticket sales in Melbourne and Victoria are at an all time high, and while we do present a somewhat specialised range of genres, I would ask you all to play a small part in our marketing strategy by using that most reliable of marketing methods – word of mouth. Spread the word, and please feel free to request an extra couple of programs if you can distribute in your individual networks. The 2011 program as always is rich in diversity; we continue to support tradition and its many roots and branches, new and emerging artists in all genres, and new collaborations. There’s a comprehensive sound lounge facility on our web site where you can spend some time and browse the wonderful selection of music we have on offer in this year’s program. Please take advantage and check out some acts you may not be familiar with, its finding the gems that make for a full festival experience as well as revisiting your old favourites. Our 17th Sydney Road Street Party will again deliver a fabulous showcase of our vibrant Moreland music, the focus of the day however remains our community. The community stalls are the heart of the event and we are determined that the community will remain the priority in our endeavours. Also I ask you to look after our streetscape and ‘bin it don’t fling it’, and if you can’t find a bin carry it with you until you do. It does make a difference. I would like to conclude as always by thanking the many people who make this festival a reality each year; our major public partners, our advertisers and supporters, our staff and crew and especially the fabulous performers, many of who have traveled many miles to be here. In 2011 Music for the People will be held in a beautiful new outdoor location, Bridges Reserve. Opening the afternoon, and performing as part of the Melbourne Ukulele Festival, The Desperadoes are six ukulele players dedicated to strumming lush harmonies on this intricately crafted musical gem: think a little bit country a little bit lowdown. Next are five piece up-tempo group Flap! who turn ordinary shoes into dancing ones mixing 1920’s jazz, English Folk and Trinidadian Calypso. The afternoon continues shifting briefly from jazz to afro-beat rhythm-driven grooves of dance floor pleasers Papa Chango. Finally overdressed barrelhouse jazzbos The Jelly Tub Rollers will complete this high energy afternoon playing righteous foxy swing; preaching down and out blues & thigh slappin’ 1930s party jazz. Enjoy a picnic on the lawn, bring family and friends and don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Crooked Still are shining stars in the frontline of the latest wave of the nu-folk, bluegrass movement in the United States. Fuelled by a massive take up of traditional music forms among a growing army of young American musicians who are experimenting to create their own unique contemporary sounds, Crooked Still are out there with the best of them. The musical prowess of this defiantly non-traditional bluegrass quintet is on display as they radically re-imagine traditional fare to blend seamlessly with original compositions. The line up of the band is highly unusual; a more traditional front line of banjo and fiddle backed up by double bass and cello behind the distinctive vocals of Aoife O’Donovan who’s delivery portrays more than a hint of Celtic influences. The approach to the material, whilst based on American form, is also somewhat reminiscent of the early arrangements of Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny and
Nano Stern is an exceptional young artist from Chile who returns to the Brunswick Festival, bringing his own Chilean band. Although he sings his songs in Spanish, his message is international; with beautifully composed melodies and superb arrangements and through his exhilarating performances he manages to communicate the sense and the beauty of his stories to all, conveying a spirit that transcends language. He is truly, a one off; gifted performer, composer, arranger, storyteller and multi-instrumentalist. He has developed a unique and eclectic fusion of traditional Latin American and European folk music. Nano and his band will perform material from his latest recording Los Espejos along with music from his earlier award winning album, Voy Y Vuelvo.

later Pentangle with Jacqui McShee. Crooked Still will be touring their latest release Some Strange Country available on Signature Sounds. Lucy Wise spent her childhood growing up in Margaret River WA singing with the Wise Family Band, and from a young age has played at folk festivals around Australia and internationally. Drawing on Appalachian and Irish Folk music traditions, Lucy accompanies her songs on guitar, ukulele and Appalachian dulcimer. Lucy formed the B’Gollies by joining with instrumental trio String Contingent and accordionist Mischa Herman. The band adds breadth and depth to songs that are all about people, and the small things that illuminate everyday life. Booking No.

Fiddle player Nina Pérez and guitarist Mattias Pérez are two of Scandinavia’s top traditional musicians and are active in the latest generation taking Swedish music into a new era. Whilst faithful to the older traditional tunes, they also engage their musical personalities, bringing a young energy to their material and new compositions. Despite their young age Nina and Mattias also work as teachers at several music colleges throughout Sweden. As well as opening the show for Nano they will conduct a special workshop at the festival.

Tim O’Brien Luke Plumb & Peter Daffy Virginia native Tim O’Brien has worked with the top names in Americana music, including Steve Earle, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Steve Martin & Earl Scruggs as well as international acts the Chieftans, Paul Brady, Lunasa, Solas and Gráda The winner of the 2006 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album, O’Brien has also been awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year award twice and is a virtuoso player on the mandolin, guitar, fiddle, banjo and bouzouki. Known for both his virtuosity and songwriting, O’Brien is equally at ease with original or traditional tunes. He is joined for this intimate show by guitar player Gerry Paul of Gráda playing self penned songs and Americana favourites. “A master of American folk music, Irish music, Scottish music – it doesn’t matter; a fine songwriter and one of my favourite singers.” Mark Knopfler

Luke Plumb and Peter Daffy are two excellent Australian musicians steeped in Celtic and American folk styles. Luke is Tasmanian born and is acknowledged world-wide as a gun mandolin player and composer. Best known for his long-term membership of Scotlands’ famous Shooglenifty, Luke has recorded 11 albums of traditional and original compositions with that band and his many other line-ups. Peter Daffy is a highly respected maker of mandolins, guitars and other stringed instruments and is a guitar player and singer of impeccable taste. Together these two artists have honed their musical partnership over the space of seven band lineups and four albums and are launching their first duo album on this Australian tour. Booking No.

This year’s Louis McManus memorial show brings together two of the most innovative acoustic guitarists in the world folk idiom. Scots born and now Canada based, Tony McManus is known throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music. His engaging personality on stage has taken him to five continents and his contribution was recently recognised with a Gold Medal voted by the readers of Acoustic Guitar magazine – fellow recipients were John Williams, Paco de Lucia and Tommy Emmanuel. His latest album The Makers Mark is a unique recording performed on 15 handcrafted guitars where, alongside his lifelong love of Celtic music, he explores harmonies
from South Africa, to the scales and rhythms of Eastern Europe. Martin Simpson is an Englishman who has spent 35 years as a professional musician and who is part of that great lineage of English acoustic folk stylists from Davy Graham, Martin Carthy, Nic Jones and so on. His interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling, and no-one has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than him. Martin has been nominated an astounding 23 times in the eleven years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – in 2010 he had an unprecedented 6 nominations for his CD, True Stories. Booking No.

Meyhané – CD launch Meyhané, n. old winehouse of Asia Minor, where musicians performed for eclectic audiences. A special concert by a new Greek ensemble of Melbourne musicians (and one from Adelaide) who perform traditional music of the region to its most authentic form. The instruments and musical style of this ensemble typify the old meyhané traditions whilst expanding to encompass the captivating sounds of the wider Eastern Mediterranean. A truly multicultural band Lolo Lovina draw influences from across Eastern Europe and Latin America. The bulk of the band’s lyrics are in Rromani, the language of the gypsies, and it is from this language that the band derived their name, which means “Red Beer”. Sydney born singer Sarah Bedák-Rockliffe fronts the band with a truly captivating voice. She grew up with Gypsy music in a Hungarian Romani family (her grandfather was a well-known Gypsy violinist from Budapest). The band features whirlwind violinist Jess Randall who also fronts The Crooked Fiddle Band, which has been featured at many festivals in Australia. Romanian accordionist Leonid Beshlei grew up in Bukovina and has played gypsy music & jazz across the Europe & USSR, as well as performing in philharmonic and folkloric orchestras in Ukraine and Moldova. Bassist Rodrigo Salgado hails from Brasilia and also plays in Eddie du Brasil.

The Woohoo Revue are Melbourne’s very own and have forged their reputation throughout Australia with their signature big sounding gypsy tunes. This is music for celebrationfor dancing, drinking, and forgetting about tomorrow. Formed in 2008, The Woohoo Revue brings together six musicians with a strong history of playing gypsy and other forms of dance music. The result is a furious blend of Balkan melodies, Latin flavours, swing and dance floor savvy. The combination of absolute dance floor mayhem and a strong sense of old world style was described in the Age Newspaper as ‘pandemonium in a pin striped suit’.

Vika & Linda Bull The Junes For 25 years, the glorious voices of Vika and Linda Bull have comprised one of the most distinctive, versatile and emotionally charged sounds on the Australian music landscape. Vika and Linda are household names in Melbourne and across Australia and are revered for their amazing singing ability, top class musicianship and performance craft. There’s nobody even remotely close to them. They’ve made eight albums of their own and countless others with many of the greats in Australian music. It’s a pleasure to welcome the sisters back to Brunswick after Linda’s recent sabbatical. In their illustrious career the Bull sisters have performed in many genres of contemporary music but always grounded by their Tongan culture, and for this show they move back to the airy harmonies and deep spiritual resonance of their traditional Tongan music.

The Junes are Melbourne’s favourite country swing band, fronted by three beautiful female vocalists; the soulful power of Suzannah Espie (GIT), the earthy nature of Sarah Carroll (GIT) and rural roots of Gleny Rae Virus (Toe Sucking Cowgirls). Backed by a hot rhythm section these three fabulous women bring a wonderful sense of fun and enjoyment to their performances. They make you feel good, with such an obvious love of the material and an easy and open connection with their audience. These beautiful frocked up gels sing close harmony like they were sisters; they play with a natural swing and write some rather catchy songs, all with an infectious enthusiasm that never fails to win their audience. Eric Bogle is one of the most popular artists ever to appear at the festival and to accommodate the demand Eric is programmed for two shows. To add to the occasion Eric will be bringing his full band, lead of course by his long time partner in crime John Munro on mandolin, guitar and vocals, Emma Luker on fiddle and Pete Titchener on electric bass. This is the first time that Eric has performed with this line up in Melbourne so it’s a very special pair of concerts. Eric’s songs have been performed and recorded by countless artists all over the world; they’ve been changed, purloined, coveted, punked, murdered, and anointed. His songs are sung with passion and conviction in sessions all over the world and in many different tongues. As a performer he’s a consummate professional, a quick wit spread through his serious commentary to set up his songs perfectly. So for the first time at the Brunswick Festival Eric and band will surely turn on a show to remember and as always, will be entertaining, moving, and generous.

Ed Bates, Rick Dempster, Garrett Costigan, Chris Altmann From the shores of Hawaii, from whence it came in the 1880’s, the steel guitar became one of the defining and most distinctive sounds of American popular music in the 20th century. This selection of Melbourne steel players span many of the styles that came to be associated with its unique sound, and tonight come together with Andy Baylor’s house band to present this unique festival show. Ed Bates spent the first half of his career as a ‘standard’ guitarist, working in such legendary outfits as the Pelaco Brothers, the Sports, and started out on his ‘L’ plates in the late 80’s on steel with the Crummy Cowboys. Ed has worked with people such as Joe Camilleri, Mark Seymour, Dan Warner, Michelle Nicolle and Maurice Frawley. Garrett Costigan, a master of the classic E9th Pedal steel has played and recorded with Checkerboard Lounge, Steve Hoy, Lisa Miller, Don Walker, Cyndi Boste, Black Sorrows, Andy Baylor, to
mention a few. He cites David Lindley as a major influence. Rick Dempster, along with Andy Baylor, formed the Dancehall Racketeers in 1981 and has played steel in that outfit ever since. He played in Tom Forsell’s Moonee Valley Drifters in the 90’s and works with Pete Baylor’s Roadhouse Romeos as well. Rick learnt from older Australian Hawaiian players Les Adams and Jim Jensen and includes some of that vintage music in the performance. Chris Altmann is one of a new breed of young roots musicians. On his recent album, he plays drums, sings, plays all manner of strings, and writes all the songs. He counts pedal steel as one of his favourite and most expressive instruments and he will be opening the show with a small combo representing the new wave. Ted will be launching his latest recording Saving the Best at the festival, a double CD in which Ted pays tribute to some of his favourite Australian songwriters on the first CD, and on the second The Laughing Game he performs children’s songs, many of them from his own childhood. Ted appears in concert for the whole show in the intimate Mechanics Institute, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Singer, songwriter, storyteller and icon of outback Australia, Ted Egan has been presenting the characters and experiences of Outback Australia to National and International audiences for over 30 years. His passion and knowledge of the good, bad and the ugly of Australian history, his strong commitment to social justice and Aboriginal culture and heritage provides a masterful commentary on both a historical and contemporary insight to ‘This Land Australia’. The pinnacle of Ted’s career came in 2003 when he was appointed the eighteenth Administrator of the Northern Territory, an unexpected but very deserving and popular honour which topped Ted’s life commitment to the people and cultures of Northern Territory both bush and city.

Pirates of Beer Ian Collard & Ben Peters The Pirates of Beer formed in 2007 to back US guitar legend Bill Kirchen on his Australian tour. The pirates are a six-piece blues, country and rock and roll dynamo featuring the fabulous Chris Wilson and Sarah Carroll with a collection of roots music royalty rarely seen on stage together. The band is somewhat geographically challenged and don’t get the opportunity to perform on a regular basis, so it’s a great pleasure to have them together at the Brunswick Festival. Chris and Sarah, are joined by Lethal Leigh Ivin (The Re-Mains) on guitar and steel, the ultra-solid grooves of bassist/ vocalist Sweet Felicia, (who recently won the MBAS International Blues Final and will travel to Memphis to represent Oz in 2011), Swing King Jason Liusoon drives the Pirates on skins, and Big Boy Lemonade on keys make up one of the hottest line ups in town.

Alan began playing whistle at the age of 5, before moving onto fiddle, piano and accordion 4 years later. His touring quartet has Tola Custy on fiddle, Steph Geremia flute/ whistle and vocals and the brilliant Donagh Hennesey on guitar; its a top class group who bring a real swing to Alan’s clever arrangements of both traditional pieces and his own original compositions. Kieran Halpin Luke Watt Presented by Folk Victoria and teacher, she has taken the long awaited jump into the singer songwriter stakes. Suzie was the lead singer of folk band Banshee, renowned for lilting harmonies and quirky arrangements of Irish, English and American folk songs and the modern alt country lineup The Hummingbirds. In 2010, fresh from the mountains of Costa Rica, where she spent two weeks songwriting in the company of Nashville artists Mary Gauthier and Darrell Scott, Suzie returned with a bag of songs inspired by this 10,000 mile adventure and headed straight into the studio. A first time visit to the festival for Kieran Halpin, a prolific Irish singer songwriter now resident in the North East of England. In his long career Kieran has recorded 19 albums and is one of the hardest working musicians in the world wide folk diaspora. Kieran is well travelled but his 2011 ‘Around the World in 80 Days Tour’ is his most ambitious yet, taking in 8 countries in all. A powerful singer his voice has such an edge to it that he sounds like he’s living every song, and he manages to marry his intelligent and often thought provoking lyrics with great melodies and his now trademark acoustic guitar sound. All of this is underscored by an incisive wit and humour, which helps an audience understand where the songs come from and hint at where they might be going.
A songwriter/guitarist from Warrnambool, Luke Watt was introduced to the recordings of the blues greats at an early age. Luke has since turned an appreciation of acoustic music into a passion. His songwriting is personal and emotive, and often draws on uniquely Australian stories, blues grooves and folk melodies. Combine this with a dynamic and percussive guitar style, a vocalist that can really sing, and you have all the makings of a young artist who is set to make an impact.

Fresh from a second triumphant tour of the United States, West Australia’s Bluegrass Parkway has just achieved the pinnacle of their performance career, having now established a firm foundation in the US market. With some high profile US festival appearances under their belt, the band is firmly entrenched in the top echelons of Australia’s top bluegrass bands. What has helped set the band apart from many others is the priority they have placed upon presenting Bluegrass music in its most authentic form. Bluegrass Parkway has just celebrated their 23rd anniversary and, since the early part of 1994, they have performed around a single microphone, as was the norm for the pioneers of the genre in the 1940s. Bluegrass Parkway’s latest album is titled A Girl From The South.

Andy Irvine is a true legend of the Irish music scene; when barely twenty one and already an ardent follower of Woody Guthrie, Andy arrived in Dublin in the early sixties to immerse himself in folk and traditional music Dublin style. By the end of the decade he had made an album with his first serious band Sweeney’s Men, traveled in Eastern Europe and on returning formed the legendary Planxty. The band’s first album was released in 1972 and was one of the most important albums ever released in the genre. Planxty went on to record another six brilliant albums; the individual members on to form numerous other classic bands. Andy has worked with many of the great names in Irish music, working solo and over the years with friend and brilliant multi instrumentalist from Holland Rens van der Zalm. King, Santana, The Grateful Dead and Herbie Hancock. His brothers affectionately refer to him as “The Horn Man”. The Oily Girls Shambelles The Oily Girls, previously known as The Well Oiled Sisters first lit up the Australian festival circuit in the mid‘90s. Judy Small Ami Williamson Judy Small needs no introduction to Brunswick audiences, she defined a style of Australian contemporary folk song that endures today providing a model for new generations of Australian song writers. Lately Judy’s performing life has been sidelined by a successful career in the law taking up much of her time, but she’s back treading the boards in 2011 with selected shows, and given her long association with the festival its fitting that one of her first shows is in the Brunswick Town Hall with a friend and admirer Ami Williamson. Ami Williamson began her musical life studying singing and piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; after her graduation, her father Australian folk singer John Williamson took a young Ami out on the road and a blooming opera career was suddenly forgotten. She has never looked back, writing and performing her unique solo shows,

treading the boards and loving it, and what’s more so did her audiences. Soundtrack composed & performed by Mike Cooper Mike Cooper performs a live soundtrack composed for lap steel guitar, processed field recordings (from Bali, Thailand and Sarawak), thumb pianos and small gongs. On the day of the temple feast of Tampaksiring, Poutou, a young maiden who performs the Legong, the dance of the virgins at the sacred temple, meets Njong, a carefree youth from Northern Bali. As they gaze at each other, she remembers a prophecy that warned “Should love enter thine eyes and go to thy heart, beware. For should he whom thou choosest not return thy love, thy gods will frown and disgrace will befall thee...” In the 1930s, Bali became THE place to be. Extolled as a paradise on Earth with beautiful (mostly topless) natives and an exotic culture, the small island was soon swarming with the rich and famous. When the Marquis Henri de la Falaise de la Coudray – or “Hank”
to ex-wife Gloria Swanson and current wife/producer Constance Bennett arrived in Bali with a Technicolor crew in 1933, there had already been a slew of “documentaries” that reaped box office success in the United States. Directed by the dilettante husband of two famous movie stars, how good could the film be? Slashed apart by censors around the world, Legong quickly disappeared and was forgotten. With its impressive sensitivity to Balinese customs (the dance and religious rituals they filmed have become extremely important for their ethnographic value alone) and an eye for the natural beauty of the island, the film ranks with F.W. Murnau’s TABU (another of Cooper’s live film/ music presentations) as an enduring masterpiece of tropical splendour. Legong is a feast for the eyes and the imagination.

In 2010 Frank recorded his latest album Countryman, in collaboration with David Bridie, (who will be performing with Frank). The album was released by the Wontok Music Foundation a newly formed not for profit organisation dedicated to promoting the music of Melanesia and Indigenous Australia.

The music of contemporary singer songwriter/guitarist LJ Hill, illustrates the rich experience of a full life – from the northwest plains of NSW to the big city streets. LJ is part Aboriginal and part Native American, with a dose of the Irish thrown in for good measure. His musical influences also come from such disparate musicians as Merle Haggard and Bruce Springsteen. LJ’s songs, sung in an almost delicate, world weary voice are beautifully crafted with subtle melody lines and celebrate personal family values, love and the loss of friends and relatives through alcohol and substance abuse. His most recent album, Namoi Mud released on Laughing Outlaw Records was produced by Brendan Gallagher, who not so long ago revived Jimmy Little’s recording career.

Flap! – So well named this band, bringing to mind the days of the flappers, wild jazz combos and silk slinky dresses, they’re innovative, entertaining, intoxicating, musically invigorating, cheeky and ‘shhexy’. Flap! are utterly original and unique in this vibrant landscape of Melbourne music. Publicists and journo’s are at a loss – you can’t compare them to anyone, in fact give it a couple of years and lesser beings will be compared to them. Kelsey and the Mean Reds is a new name on the Melbourne music scene, and features the wonderful singing of Kelsey James in her first all original band. Kelsey has been a joyful nomad over past years, traversing the varied lands of jazz, blues, electro, rock and musical theatre, but has now found a true home. Labels seem to be

Suitable for all levels. Nina Pérez and Mattias Pérez are highly experienced musicians and teachers in Scandinavian fiddle and folk music. These fascinating folk styles are being slowly incorporated and adopted by fiddle players the world over. Nina and Mattias will explain and demonstrate the subtleties of this fascinating music. Suitable for fiddle players and fiddle music lovers. Andy Irvine developed a style of song accompaniment for ‘Irish’ bouzouki and mandola that remains one of the most intriguing and inspiring in the world of acoustic performance. In this workshop Andy will demonstrate his approach to accompaniment. Suitable all levels.

The lyrics are both disarmingly confessional and casually matter-of-fact, the poetry of everyday disillusionment and joy. The sounds transport you to a weathered, welcoming old couch in Kelsey’s sunroom, the air filled with piano, glockenspiel, brushed drums, subtly treated guitar, and the warmth of friendship. The quality of the band is self evident with Tim Coghill (Georgia Fields Band) – drums, percussion & backing vocals; Ryan Monro (Cat Empire) – bass; Eamon McNelis (Flap!) – trumpet; Kynan Robinson (CW Stoneking) – trombone, and Kelsey herself on vocals, piano and guitar.
