Message from the Directors Welcome to the 28th annual Brunswick Music Festival. Unfold the program to reveal a musical degustation. We have paired the best in story telling, song writing and cultural jamming with tasty morsels, organic venues and heirloom instruments. There is something on the menu to suit every appetite. With each day you have a variety of choice including a soul-stirring Gospel Brunch, a trek through Australian heritage with Shane Howard & Emma Donovan at CERES, a platter of Japanese Funk with Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, East African retro-pop from Alsarah and The Nubatones and local delights of Mia Dyson and Jess Ribeiro. We are honoured to showcase quality local produce in the exceptional urban orchard of Brunswick, where the largest numbers of songwriters in Australia call home. Strut & Fret team

From Performing Arts Moreland In 2016 we proudly celebrate Brunswick’s place as the home of Australian song writing. This year the festival features some of Australia’s best loved singer songwriters as well as some exciting fresh international artists. Performers are able to establish a real rapport with the audiences in the intimate festival venues with some delightful and unexpected results. This year is especially exciting with a huge program packed into six days and a new ticketing option with access to multiple events. The Brunswick Festival was inspired by a series of free concerts called the Music of Migration at the Brunswick Town Hall in the 1980s to celebrate the richness migration has brought us. This year we continue the tradition, featuring performers from a vast array of cultures. On Sunday the 6th March, the Festival explodes into life with the Sydney Road Street Party. This free event gives local residents an opportunity to see and hear some great music and performance art and learn more about what is happening in our community.

From the Mayor Moreland City Council is proud to continue its support as the Principal Public Partner of the Brunswick Music Festival and Sydney Road Street Party. These events promise an exciting program, representing a week of outstanding musical experiences in the City of Moreland. This year’s events deliver an extraordinary line-up of local, national and international talents. Council’s continued support of these events indicates its strong commitment to the promotion of the arts. We believe that cultural expression engages, educates and challenges us, individually and as a community. Council understands that the arts play an important role in our communities by strengthening our connectedness and making a valuable contribution to civic pride and community identity. I encourage all Moreland residents and visitors to sample the rich array of musical experiences during the event, especially the free Music for the People event at Shore Reserve on Saturday 19 March 2016 presented by Moreland City Council in partnership with Multicultural Arts Victoria.

SHOOGLENIFTY (SCOT) After a sell-out 25th anniversary tour, Shooglenifty come to Brunswick with their exquisite traditional Scottish sounds and devilishly dirty rhythms. Lead by snake-hipped, fiddle-toting, Highland frontman Angus R Grant, Shooglenifty is accompanied by secret weapon, ‘puirt à beul’ vocalist Kaela Rowan. The band’s latest album The United Knot was nominated for “Album of the Year” at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2015.

ALSARAH & THE NUBATONES (SUDAN/USA) For her only Melbourne show, singersongwriter and ethnomusicologist Alsarah presents her spellbinding East African retro-pop; the distinct swing of Middle Eastern beats with a nod to the retro sounds of Ethiopian music of the 60s & 70s. Based in Brooklyn, she draws on her Sudanese heritage and memories of Yemen.

DJUKI MALA (AUS) Direct from Elcho Island, Djuki Mala perform a high-energy and stunning fusion of traditional Indigenous culture, contemporary dance and storytelling. Since their 2007 clip of ‘Zorba the Greek’ went viral, this six-man troupe has thrilled audiences with reinterpretations of popular culture and traditional dance. Embellishing their show with comedy, music and clowning, Djuki Mala are the new storytellers of Yolngu culture.

Experience the Middle Eastern culture of Moreland through a vibrant dining experience filled with traditional live music and authentic belly dance.

Running in conjunction with the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Is This Thing On? is a celebration of humour, wit and weirdness in the work of 10 contemporary visual artists who, like comedians, risk humiliation, insult and indifference. Including themes of satire, irreverence, pathos, surrealism and the absurd, this exhibition will feature animated objects, video work, ceramics, sculpture, textiles and installation.
