In 2015, BMF is excited to present two nights of concerts with Archie Roach. The first will be at Brunswick Town Hall and again a day later under the setting sun at CERES Environment Park. Beloved singer and songwriter Archie Roach is a powerful voice for Indigenous Australians and one of this country’s greatest storytellers. His music tells the stories of his people, this land and the human condition. With a career spanning over three decades, Archie has shared the stage with some of the world’s most iconic artists, including Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Rodriguez and Paul Simon. Archie is joined in concert by roots and soul sensation, the Radical Son trio. Frontman David Leha has one foot on the modern pulse and the other planted firmly in the roots of music. THE Melbourne Rhythm Project (AUS) Join The Melbourne Rhythm Project, an innovative collaboration that brings together an ensemble of the finest swing dancers, tap dancers and swing and blues musicians in the business. Award-winning jazz ensemble Leigh Barker and the New Sheiks are joined on stage by the Lindy Hop tap and swing dancers, stunningly choreographed by the internationally renowned Ramona Staffeld. With the flexibility of a small jazz band, the excitement of a modern dance company and the playfulness of a late night Lindy Hop party, this event is not to be missed!

Jazz Party (AUS) After a tremendous year for Jazz Party, running stages at Dark MoFo, Mullum Festival & Melbourne International Jazz Festival as well as a swathe of packed out residencies at Boney, Hugs&Kisses, The Grace Darling and Shadow Electric they are hosting a special once off ballroom party at the glorious Brunswick Town Hall. For those uninitiated, Jazz Party is a loose collective of jazzbos known for their sporadic take-over residences in unassuming rooms across Melbourne. They play a slippery mix of jump blues, honkey tonk boogie and rhythm’n’blues á la New Orleans. Shouting, drinking and slow dancing with strangers all encouraged.

REBETIKO ENSEMBLE AND UNDERBELLY DANCE Often called the Greek blues, Rebetiko emerged as the musical amalgamation of the Greek underclass. Like flamenco and tango, Rebetiko reflected the impassioned sounds of an urban-poor, transcending the harsh realities of life with songs of joy, love, and heart-breaking refugee tales. This performance brings together a unique ensemble of musicians who share the common passion for this golden era of Greek music, drawing on the material of Markos Vamvakaris, and Vasillis Tsistanis.

Maru Tarang is a remarkable collaboration, transcending genre and language between two pairs of expert musicians from different countries: acclaimed slide-guitarist Jeff Lang and tabla maestro Bobby Singh from Australia; sarangi master Asin Kahn Langa and brilliantly expressive khartal player Bhungar Manganiyar of Rajasthan. Through this virtuosic musical conversation, BMF audiences will be treated to ancient Rajasthani folk songs re-imagined through Australian roots music and seminal blues.

CLANGOR! by MARGARET LENG TAN (SING) Whether playing the tin can, the jack-in-the-box or the toy hammer and rattle, Leng Tan fulfills her mentor John Cage’s philosophy that you can make music with just about anything. Suitable for ages 8 to 108, Clangor! is a diminutive music-theatre experience of nostalgia and humour performed exclusively on all manner of toy instruments. From toy pianos and bicycle bells to a hand-cranked music box, Margaret Leng Tan treats them as real instruments in keeping with the French artist Marcel Duchamp’s statement, “poor tools require better skills.” Since moving to New York, Leng Tan has become a major force within the American avant-garde, as well as being the first woman to earn a doctorate from Julliard. “the queen of the toy piano” THE NEW YORK TIMES

With TOLKA Sharon Shannon literally has music at her fingertips. The accordionist from Ireland has achieved legendary status throughout the world and has made the much-maligned accordion ‘cool’ in her home country. Renowned for her collaborations, not just in Irish traditional music, but across all musical genres, Sharon has won several music awards and received a Lifetime Achievement at the Irish Meteor Awards in 2009. Sharon has collaborated with artists including Bono, Sinead O'Connor, The Chieftains, The Waterboys, Willie Nelson, Nigel Kennedy, and Alison Krauss - a list that is testament to Sharon's versatility, as well as her astounding talent. Music for the People promises to delight with a program of activities and entertainment that celebrates the wonderful cultural diversity of Moreland. The program offers something for everyone with a selection of world music and interactive sessions, children’s activities and market stalls. Depedro (SPAIN) With OSCAR JIMENEZ (AUS/COLOMBIA)

Spanish singer/songwriter/ guitarist Jairo Zavala formed Depedro as a solo project after years spent performing with Calexico, Los Coronas, Vacazul and 3000 Hombres. Zavala grew up in Madrid listening to 'the pre-WWII songs of his grandparents and playing the music that his Peruvian father brought home from his travels to Latin America and Africa. He credits these influences in shaping his own style of guitar playing, pulled from blues, folk, flamenco, afrobeat, latin, and rock. “Hailing from Madrid, Spain, this acoustic folk rock band will get you to sit up and listen… Depedro is certainly a band to take notice of.” CMJ

DELANEY DAVIDSON (NZ) Enigmatic multi-instrumentalist Delaney Davidson defines and commands his own unique realm within the indefinable shadowy musical world some call ‘country-noir’, ‘alt-country’ or even gothic americana’. Delaney performs his solo show culled from ten years of world touring. CHARLES JENKINS & THE AMATEUR HISTORIANS (AUS) Following on from the launch of his critically acclaimed 6th solo album in 2014, Charles Jenkins decided to write and record an album inspired by Melbourne and its surrounds. For this one off performance, he enlisted Ice Cream Hand’s Douglas Robertson and Zhivago’s Dave Milne, and The Amateur Historians were born. What followed were sold-out shows at Fitzroy and Northcote Town Halls, the release of two limited-edition albums and a “best of” collection all in one year. Charles Jenkins and The Amateur Historians will perform a return show for BMF audiences. “With a combination of beautiful imagery and masterful melodies, Charles Jenkins and The Amateur Historians effortlessly take you around the city and make you fall in love with Melbourne all over again.” PBS FM

The Bushwackers and their Bush Bash Barn Dance (AUS) The Brunswick Town Hall was designed for community gatherings and dances, so we throwback to a golden era by returning the Hall to her former glory with a Bush Dance. Fresh from their Gold Rush Tour and celebrating 42 years of performing, The Bushwackers remain one of Australia’s most recognisable ensembles. Featuring the iconic lagerphone of front man Dobe Newton and his band of stellar musicians come and dance to the working songs of the early 20th century including Beneath The Southern Cross and Henry’s Men. The Bushwackers are bringing bush dancing back!

The Whitetop Mountaineers are Martha Spencer and Jackson Cunningham, a duo hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Steeped in the mountain music traditions, their shows are a combination of country duet singing, fiery instrumentals and high energy Appalachian dancing. Martha and Jackson have performed at festivals, venues and workshops across the USA and have toured to the UK, Ireland, and Australia.

With APPALACHIAN HEAVEN STRING BAND Jesse Milnes and Emily Miller perform country and old-time music, singing close harmony with Jesse's unique finger-picked guitar style and a healthy dose of old-time fiddling. Emily was raised playing and singing Louvin Brothers songs with her parents. Jesse grew up in the world of West Virginia old-time music, learning from masters like Ernie Carpenter. They now make their home in central West Virginia.

Chris While AND Julie Matthews (ENG) Winners in the Best Duo category at the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and nine times nominated since 2001 in the Best Duo, Best Song & Best Live Act categories. Chris While and Julie Matthewsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; musical partnership began in 1993 when they were key members of the folk super-group The Albion Band. As a duo they have toured throughout the world and gained an evergrowing devoted fan-base. Their songs have been covered by a range of artists including Mary Black, Barbara Dickson, Christine Collister and Fairport Convention.

THE SWEET GRAND SALVO (AUS) Coco De Mer ensemble Sounds of the MONA’S CHOIR with and choir Seychelles present ROCK MY SOUL

The Choirs dynamic new show "Rock My Soul” pays tribute to the great American quartets of gospel from the 1940s and 50s, including The Swan Silvertones, The Dixie Hummingbirds, and The Golden Gate Quartet. The Sweet Mona’s Choir is, one of Victoria’s most highly regarded gospel and world music choirs, celebrate the beauty, energy and sweet harmonies of the great gospel groups.

Grand Salvo is the project of Melbourne based musician and composer Paddy Mann. His quiet songs are narrative based and can be both mournful and sparse, or richly orchestrated and joyful, exploring loss, death, decay and transformation. This will be a rare chance to see Grand Salvo with a full ensemble with choir, taking full advantage of the church’s beautiful acoustics.

Mongolian Bling jumps into the thriving music scene in the capital Ulaanbaatar and follows stars as they rap nationwide with their crew, cars, and jewels. Beyond this bling however, lies a failed democracy and a dying ancient culture that the elders mourn the loss of. Moreland is home to a diverse range of musical talent. Every year the Brunswick library is transformed into a live music venue showcasing local musicians. This year the program will feature the Brunswick Neighbourhood House Community Choir, Kate Mulqueen, Lauren Glezer with Keren Leizerovitz and the haBiBis. Made in Moreland is an innovative program to support and promote local musicians, writers and filmmakers. 27 FEBRUARY TO 29 MARCH

Song for the stage, the captives and the line of production is a three channel video shot in three iconic Moreland locations; Coburg Drive-In, Pentridge Prison Village and the former Kodak factory site in which a lone figure stands on a small stage with a scenic backdrop singing unaccompanied into the night. The project is inspired by nostalgia, theatricality, and local archaeology whilst mourning the imminent burial of Melbourne’s history beneath the swell of urban development.

With Her Feet Off the Ground brings together the work of four female artists that depict the female form in a state of flux. In the absence of a cultural language that fully defines the female subject, the artists in this exhibition depict women entangled, suspended and immersed. This literal state of flux acts as a metaphor for the ambiguous and undefined spaces that feminine identity occupies in an incomplete cultural knowledge.
