some of the most successful careers in music, and in 2013 teamed up to share the secret of their success and, as Iovine says, “inspire, challenge, and satisfy the curiosity of the next wave of game-changers.” With a vision and a generous donation, they have inspired the creation of a new learning environment that promotes innovation and creativity, encourages student entrepreneurial spirit, and allows faculty and students to teach and learn collaboratively.

PROGRAM MISSION This unique program offers a highly select group of students an integrated, four-year course of study that provides in-depth learning in three essential areas: art and design; engineering and computer science; and business and venture management. The fourth year “Garage Experience” moves student teams from concept to creation, vision to prototype. Throughout the program, students are taught to think seamlessly across multiple disciplines and to apply a vast array of relevant technologies and techniques toward innovative problem-solving.

Our Toolbox

Brian’s passion is translating digital information into the physical—an emergent subculture of the architectural field. Educated at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design, he has a background in digital design techniques, and as Project Designer and Computational Designer for Jacobs Hall, he will apply his knowledge to optimize the performance of your new building. Through a process of quick iteration, optioning, metrics-based optimization, rapid prototyping and fabrication, value is added to the design process by enabling the design team to make informed decisions quickly while yielding high performance environments. “Recent developments in the fields of computation and additive manufacturing have the potential to disrupt common conceptions of design and making. I believe it is our responsibility as architects to harness these innovations and propel them into the future through the built environment, creating a more responsive, intelligent, sustainable and efficient world.”

“Problem-solving shapes the known, while innovation coaxes into existence the unknown….Thus, we strive to pursue the big picture and to see architecture instrumentally, without losing sight of the fact that the goals of architecture reach far beyond itself: to help make people’s lives more comfortable, meaningful and pleasant, to contribute towards a more just society, and help transform the world in a more sustainable and beautiful way.”

WELCOME

P A NE L I S T S

MuseuMs are places of teaching, learning, listening, watching and experiencing. They are places that captivate our attention. Today we are here to learn about three new museums in San Francisco that are challenging old ideas of what it means to be a museum. Each is rooted in place; whether a former military barrack, a waterfront warehouse, or an industrial factory, each museum plans to use an existing building to tell part of its story.

Don Young, Founder and Principal / D.R. Young Associates

Each project has a special mission, process and set of challenges, but the common thread among them is the belief in the revitalization of existing buildings that are symbols of our shared history and culture. As an architect, I believe in integrating the historic and the contemporary. These three inspired and innovative museums are succeeding in doing just that. We look forward to sharing with you the process of innovation and inspiration that these three new projects will bring to our City. Thank you for joining us today. Best regards –

Carolyn Kiernat

TRANSFORMATIVE BY DESIGN: ACCELERATING THE SPEED FROM BENCH TO BEDSIDE As a translational-research incubator, the Institute catalyzes the application of new knowledge and techniques to clinical practice at the front lines of patient care. With the opening of the Institute, the College of Pharmacy maintains its standing as one of the nation’s top-tier pharmacy schools and furthers its goal to become one of the world’s foremost translational research centers. Its state-of-the art equipment and open, interactive design will aid in the recruitment of the best and brightest and promote collaboration across the entire Health Sciences campus. CONNECTED AT ITS CORE A beautiful and unique four-story atrium joins the Translational Center and the new Skaggs Hall, allowing for connectivity between the two buildings and creating one unified Institute. The atrium is designed to “bump and buzz” with activity and invite visitors to experience and understand the field of Pharmacy. MORE SCIENCE PER SQUARE FOOT Within its walls, the Institute fosters an entrepreneurial environment and practices sustainability as a research enterprise. It provides ultimate flexibility to allow for ground-breaking research and innovation. Throughout the facility, the design engenders a culture of innovation and allows for spontaneous interactions and cross pollination across the health sciences. A single corridor moves people throughout the building, which creates efficient flow and promotes impromptu interaction. The walls lining the corridor are covered in white boards that conceal closets to maximize storage and provide a place for team-based problem-solving. A HIGHLY EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Sustainability and efficient operation were core drives in the design of the Institute, which is targeting LEED Gold certification. The design incorporates sustainability strategies that reflect the building program, local climate, and massing that are projected to result in energy savings of 30% over baseline, or $7.5 million over 50 years. The building also meets the University’s goal for water reduction, using about 37% less domestic water than a comparable building. CAMPUS-MAKING The Institute’s striking west façade can be seen from Salt Lake City, and the approach to the Health Science campus via Medical Drive. The Institute forms an edge to the Academic Corridor as one enters the Health Science campus and relates to pedestrians at a different scale than the west side of the building. A large cantilever canopy denotes building entry and reaches out to the academic corridor as a gesture to engage with the rest of the Health Science campus as well as the existing Skaggs Hall—what we affectionately refer to as “the embrace”—that imparts a new presence and sense of place, linking L.S. Skaggs Hall, HSEB, and the College of Nursing Building. 51

RELEVANCE TO THE HEALTH SERVICES EDUCATION BUILDING

. Advances leadership in health professions and related sciences . Simulated learning environments . Promotes cross-departmental interaction . Provides a “home base” for the College

VISION Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is a leader in health careers education and ranks eighth in the nation in the conferring of associate degrees in health professions and related sciences. The College needed a new state-of-the-art teaching facility to support the advancement of the health careers programs. THE OPPORTUNITY The NBBJ design team conducted in-depth, participatory design workshops with students, instructors, and administrators, which resulted in the planning of the Human Patient Simulator Lab, a convergence space, and an outdoor courtyard for students and faculty. NBBJ designed spaces that add vitality, adaptability, functionality, and a sense of home to programs that are unique and relevant to the future of health careers. CROSS-DEPARTMENTAL INTERACTION Strategic placement of convergence areas that motivate cross-departmental interaction, as well as informal areas of meeting, gathering, and discussion among students, are highlights of this facility. Because the health careers technology department had been scattered across the Tri-C campus, there was no “home base” for the College. By placing the Human Patient Simulator Lab adjacent to the atrium space, the atrium space adjacent to the outdoor gathering space, and designing large windows opening up each space to its neighbor, the College’s resources were utilized in a way that made the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

December 3, 2012 Helena Cipres-Palacin, Project Manager Stanford University Department of Project Management 3160 Porter Drive, Suite 200 Palo Alto, CA 94304-8442 Subject: Stanford University, Old Chemistry Building Rehabilitation 07-200

Dear Helena and members of the selection committee,

Chemistry Building, including historical significance, experiential quality, influence on surrounding campus, programmatic similarities, construction type and achieved outcomes.

We are honored to have this opportunity to work with Stanford University as you embark on the important journey to transform the Old Chemistry Building and the future of teaching, learning and experiencing the Life Sciences. Stanford has a long-standing tradition of attracting and nurturing the best minds. We believe that the inspiring outcome of this project is to develop and realize a world-class facility that capitalizes on Science through innovation and community. Archeology Center Rehabilitation [ARG] Stanford University The Archaeology Center creates links between the main constituent departments (Anthropology and Classics), as well as other participating schools and departments ranging from Earth Sciences to Art History. The Center enhances academic interactions at Stanford between the Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences facilitating innovative collaborative research at a global reach.

Cantor Center for the Visual Arts Stanford University The Cantor Center is housed in one of the first structures on the West Coast built completely of reinforced concrete. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the University closed the museum for seismic strengthening and construction of a new wing. ARG designed and implemented a restoration of the concrete framed skylight.

We understand that the aim of this project is to create a vibrant Science Teaching and Learning Center by bringing back to life and thereby extending the potential of one of the most significant historic buildings on campus. The proposed program suggests a purposeful synergy between a network of components which activate how teaching and learning have and will continue to evolve. Here, with the benefit of a connection to the campus context and a mindset to develop a scientific and analytical thought process, the teaching laboratories, interaction spaces and historical context will merge to inspire a new way of thinking about and delivering Science. We understand the significance of the Old Chemistry Building to Stanford and the care required to respect its historic standing and how to respond sensitively and responsibly to environmental design. The project’s prominent location near the Main Quad just off the Palm Drive Oval, the inclusion of modern teaching/learning spaces, an auditorium, the Stanford Libraries, and the Registrar’s Office will identify the Old Chemistry project as a key anchor for the Life Sciences at Stanford University. To address these important considerations, and based on the successes realized in recent projects with extraordinary, high-performance goals, NBBJ designed an approach to an integrated team with the intent to bring expertise and forward thinking in three key critical and differentiating aspects of the project. These are: 1) Higher Education Planning with emphasis in scientific teaching laboratories and learning environments, 2) Preservation Architecture, place-making, and connecting Stanford’s legacy of the past with that of its future, and 3) Environmental Design and Energy Performance specifically as it relates to sustainable laboratory and academic campus buildings. Serving as the Prime Architect for your project, NBBJ proposes to team with Architectural Resources Group and Atelier Ten to guide a collaborative and detailed process with your stakeholders to arrive at a thoughtful solution that unites the project’s aspirations with the targets of your schedule, performance goals, and budget. NBBJ is a global leader in science, research, and education architecture, recognized continuously in the U.S. and overseas for designing high-performance, human-centered environments. NBBJ’s history includes a long list of technically complex, one-of-a-kind buildings designed for some of the world’s most prestigious higher education institutions and leading research organizations. We have included a glimpse into projects that share key relevant aspects to the Old

Neukom Building Stanford University School of Law The law school’s unique bioclimactic design was shaped by Atelier Ten’s rigorous analyses, which enabled the building to take advantage of Stanford’s mild, sunny climate. After optimizing the massing and shading geometries for natural ventilation and daylight, the school was encouraged to invest in controls, shading, and operable windows, allowing free cooling for 60% of office hours and an annual energy savings of 32%.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Atelier Ten is working with the design and the client teams to refine existing curatorial approaches to support the desired environment for art preservation, the visitor experience and reduced energy use. To achieve this, Atelier Ten is optimizing the building envelope through analysis, design charrettes and energy modeling , and by collaborating with the mechanical engineers and lighting designers to select innovative and low energy conditioning systems.

Architectural Resources Group (ARG), as a design partner with NBBJ and Atelier Ten, will lead the project’s historic resource planning, rehabilitation and material conservation. ARG will play a key role in the appropriate design integration of the program into the building, lead the core and shell rehabilitation, assist Stanford in navigating the planning and building permit process with the County of Santa Clara and, if desired by the University, assist with the process related to the California (and possibly National) Register of Historical Resources (CRHR). ARG brings over 30 years of direct relevant experience at Stanford, on projects such as: Green Library, the 1999 restoration of Cantor Center, the recent 2012 Cantor skylight restoration, Main Quad Sandstone Restoration, the 2012 Main Quad pavement restoration, Language Corner, Archaeology Center, Hoover Tower, multiple engineering lab buildings in Quad 02, and the 1996 and 2012 rehabilitation of multiple historic Row Houses. ARG has worked in similar capacities with many other higher education institutions including: UC Berkeley, University of Virginia, Caltech, USC, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, Mills College, USF, Foothill and DeAnza College, and University of Arizona. Atelier Ten also has experience on a range of projects at Stanford University, including Bing Concert Hall, the Neukom Law School, and the upcoming Anderson Collection Gallery. Atelier Ten also led the development of Stanford’s Alternative Means to the Santa Clara County Green Building Ordinance, and has assisted with compliance on seven other projects including the BioEngineering & Chemical Engineering Building. Atelier Ten’s portfolio of notable historic buildings with improved environmental performance include IIT’s Crown Hall in Chicago, the SFMOMA extension (in progress) and the Paul Rudolph Arts Complex at Yale University. Atelier Ten has worked on more than 30 sustainable laboratory buildings and 230 academic buildings, many of which are renovations. On behalf of our team, I am thrilled to submit our Letter of Interest for this important project. We are dedicated to bringing a collaborative process of engagement, deep expertise and understanding of your transformative project, and a sincere commitment to help Stanford University realize its aspirations for Old Chemistry, Life Sciences and the University community.

Sincerely,

Lilian Asperin-Clyman Principal
