“21 today, 21 today I’ve got the key of the door, never been 21 before.” Not me you understand! So who’s coming of age? Birthdays are always special, but the message in this particular ditty is loud and clear. 21st birthdays are extra special. Enough it seems for the Kilworth Challenge to have possession of the key and the committee will be unlocking the said door on this May Bank Holiday weekend of the 28th and 29th. A very happy 21st birthday to all involved over the two days where 45 teams will battle for that coveted top position or maybe just to complete the course in one piece! The American novelist F Scott Fitzgerald wrote “When a man is tired of life on his 21st birthday, it indicates that he is rather tired of something in himself.” That could hardly apply to The Challenge as it approaches its special anniversary. Nearly £850.000 has so far been raised since its inceptiontruly amazing. The magic million awaits maybe not this year, but there is every chance that the figure will be achieved in 2012. That will be cause for a great celebration, not only for the achievements of the committee- the personnel of which has remained largely unchanged over the years- but to the teams and indeed all involved in the event in whatever capacity. Could that then signal a committee re-structure? Only they will know the answer. If that were to be the case, it would be sad and the end of an era, but what a moment to depart. Millionaires all of them! On another uncertain matter, at the time of writing, we are still without a pub to visit- a social outlet denied to all its regulars. So it will have been

particularly welcome to have joined together for the street party to celebrate the Royal Wedding. A big thank you is due to Tracy Allen and her committee for organising this much needed village gathering. We know that pubs are closing at an alarming rate due to financial hardships, though not in The Lion’s case. It may have been however. It could be argued that the demise of the pub can be put firmly at the door of the breweries. They charge astronomical rents, tie the landlord to buy drinks from them at excessive costs which has to be passed on. Then there are the annual government easy pickings tax increases on alcohol, often disproportionately. The very social fabric of our society is under threat! Still we have to be optimistic and hope that by June’s issue of The News we will be celebrating a new chapter in the history of our village pub and the opportunity to resurrect that oh so important community spirit. Downing a few pints might be quite enjoyable too!

Police recover property stolen from as far as Europe during Operation Consequence Police arrested a total of nine people during the two day planned operation, which took place yesterday (Wednesday April 13) and today (Thursday April 14). People believed to be involved in the theft, cloning and selling of high value stolen vehicles were targeted at addresses in Hugglescote, Wolvey, Coalville, Dunton Bassett, Bedworth, Groby, Markfield, Leicester, Bagworth and North Kilworth. Two caravans stolen from Germany and France, thousands of pounds worth of cash, an Audi estimated to be worth £45,000, a motorbike, mobile phones, computers, Class A drugs, vehicle documents and vehicle parts were all recovered. A Range Rover, estimated to be worth £37,000, a BMW and thousands of pounds worth of cash were also seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act. That’s the equivalent of over 6,000 fewer victims across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Leicestershire Constabulary has issued a warning about bogus companies offering to repair computers infected with viruses. Police have received reports from members of the public who have been contacted via telephone by people claiming they work on behalf of Microsoft. The caller claims that they have received information via the customer's internet service provider that they have serious virus problems with their computer. The customer is asked to log on to their computer and download a program that hands over remote control of the computer so the problem can be fixed and then asked to pay a subscription fee to prevent it happening again. It has been established that the computers did not have anything wrong and customers have given a stranger access to their computer & any information they store on it.

They made off with a quantity of cash and a mobile phone. The victim was not injured. * On September 14, the owner of a property in Shawell answered the door to three men who forced their way in and assaulted her. The woman managed to escape and was taken to hospital for treatment. Cash was stolen. Policing the Future - Meet the Chief Constable and Chair of the Police Authority - four meetings open to the public Policing is facing a period of great change. The current unprecedented financial situation means that, inevitably, some police services will be delivered differently. Within the next twelve months, the Government is proposing to abolish Police Authorities and replace them with directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners. Despite the challenges posed by this new landscape both the Police Authority and the Constabulary remain focused on further improvement of the policing services provided for the people and businesses of Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland. We are holding a number of events to give you the opportunity to hear how we are proposing to tackle the challenges ahead. We would be pleased if you would join us, bringing friends and colleagues if you wish. Information, in the form of short presentations, will be provided on the financial horizon; the proposed changes to police governance; force performance; efficiency plans and changes in the way policing may be delivered in the future. These presentations will be followed by Public Questions, hosted by Ben Jackson from BBC Radio Leicester, when you can raise any issues or concernsyou may have. Each event starts at 6.30pm (light refreshments from 6.00pm) and will finish by 8.30pm. The dates and venues are as follows: *Tuesday 24 May 2011 County Hall, Glenfield, Leicester LE3 8RA
*Thursday 16 June 2011 Rutland County Council, Catmose, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6HP *Monday 27 June 2011 Town Hall, Town Hall Square, Leicester, LE1 9BG *Thursday 14 July 2011 Police Headquarters, St Johns, Enderby, Leicester, LE19 2BX If you would like to come along, simply call us on 0116 229 8986 or e-mail us at police.authority@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk providing your name, a contact number and your venue of choice. We look forward to seeing you. Chairman, of the Police Authority, Chief Constable
PRESS RELEASES A review of the Libraries Heritage and Arts Service (LHA) was completed in December 2010. This can be found on the County Council’s website www.leics.gov.uk/lha_review As part of the budgetary settlement, the combined LHA services need to save £4.2 million over the next four years. Whilst there is a commitment not to close any services altogether, some of the savings will have to be made from reductions in the services that are currently offered. It is proposed to save between £426,000 and £433,000 from a reduction in opening hours across the LHA services. A public consultation exercise will take place from April 11th 2011, and end on 31st May for museums and the Record Office and 24th June for libraries. If you would like to comment on the proposals for libraries, there are a number of ways that you can do this: *Send a written response to either libraries@leics.gov.uk, or by post to Library Services Stakeholders , Leics County Council, Have Your Say, FREEPOST, NAT 18685, Leicester, LE3 8RA *Visit our online survey at www.leics.gov.uk/librariesreview. * Visit your local library and fill in a questionnaire. Householders are responsible for any waste they allow to be removed from their homes. Residents are being urged to check that anyone they hire to take away rubbish is legally allowed to do so.When thinking about hiring a company, ‘man and van’ or a skip to dispose of your excess rubbish, building waste or garden rubbish from your property, they need to ask the person or contractor hired for their waste transfer licence/permit which authorises them to carry the waste. In recent weeks, there have been incidents of fly-tipping locally. It is the resident's duty to make sure that waste is going to a registered site by a registered carrier and ultimately if not they remain liable to prosecution as well as the company/carrier. Rubbish that is dumped on the highway or farmers’ fields, etc, is classed as flytipping and is a criminal offence and carries a penalty of up to six months imprisonment and / or £20,000 fine. Enforcement officers will always check flytipping for evidence to help trace which home the waste has come from. If in doubt as to whether workers are registered then do NOT use them, or call

PAGE 3 the Environment Agency to check on 08708 506 506. The best cycling routes in the district are being promoted in a new map aiming to get people back on their bikes this summer. The easy-to-use map is being produced by Leicestershire County Council, in partnership with Harborough District Council, along with keen cyclists and cycle shops. It is part of Leicestershire’s Choose How You Move campaign which helps people get fit, save money, have fun and help their local environment by leaving cars at home. The map, one of a series of six available for Leicestershire, details various cycle routes and paths through Market Harborough, as well as routes around the rest of the rural district. To coincide with the launch of the map, Harborough District Council’s Active Together team has organised a cycling proficiency course for adults on Saturday, May 14, from 10.30am4.30pm. The course, for people aged 16 and over, costs £5 and all you need is a bike in good working order and a cycling helmet. Places will be limited, and can be booked by calling 01858 828282 or emailing activetogether@harborough.gov.uk The map will soon be available to download at www.harborough.gov.uk/cycling Anyone over 60 years old who fancies a game of tennis in the run up to Wimbledon can enjoy special sessions being hosted in Market Harborough. HDCs Active Together team has organised a series of weekly indoor mini-tennis sessions for those who want to enjoy a social game where players use shorter rackets and play on a smaller court. The sessions are ideal for older people who haven’t picked up a racket before, or who would like to get back into the habit of playing. It costs just £2 to join in, and the sessions take place every Tuesday from 2pm to 3pm at the Octagonal Hall next to Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Fairfield Road . For more details about mini-tennis or other Active Together activities, call 01858 828282, email activetogether@harborough.gov.uk or visit www.harborough.gov.uk/activetogether The Royal Anglian Regiment will receive the Honorary Freedom of the District from Harborough District

Council at a special ceremony next week. It is the first time the council has bestowed the honour. It entitles the regiment to march through the streets of the district on ceremonial occasions with bayonets fixed, colours flying and bands playing. The regiment, currently on operational tour in Cyprus , has said it may fulfil its right to march in the district later in the year. Harborough District Council is holding a Volunteer Walk Leader training day on Friday, May 6 from 10am to 3pm open to anyone aged over 16 years old. The popular Healthy Harborough Walks programme relies on volunteers to keep it running. Hundreds of people benefit from the time put in by volunteers to help lead short walks. Walk leaders gain free access to the council’s regular organised walking trips, saving about £4 each time, and are also invited to attend quarterly walk leader lunches. The training will take place at the Sports Pavillion, Kilworth Road in Husbands Bosworth. Refreshments and lunch will be provided at the training, and anyone attending should specify dietary requirements. For more information, or to book a place on the course, contact Marianne Boyle at m.boyle@harborough.gov.uk or call 01858 828282. The hugely successful MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It) programme, run by HDC alongside health experts, is taking place again at Harborough Leisure Centre for children aged seven to 13. The healthy living courses aim to get the whole family involved in helping children to change their eating and exercise habits, while learning about nutrition, and with a view to improving overall health, fitness and wellbeing for years to come. The MEND programme, which offers expert advice to children, has previously had successes in Market Harborough, which included a young person featured in national media owing to their amazing success in changing their lifestyle. The ten-week club is for children that may be above a healthy weight and will take place every Mon and Thurs from May 9 at Harborough Leisure Centre. Places are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis.

North Kilworth Parish Council Notes of Meeting 18th April Page 4

-PLANN ING MATTERS 11/00229/FUL: Retrospective application for change of use to B8 (decorative surfacing contractors depot): Evergreen Field Farm Pincet Lane Mr Wright indicated that there was an extant planning permission for the creation of 3 woodworking units and as such the use by HMS was in his opinion entirely within the terms of the planning permission already granted. The Chairman raised concerns with possible contamination from diesel spillages of the underlying aquifer, the abstraction of gravel and the infill of the areas where abstraction had taken place. Mr Wright indicated that he had been visited by the Environment Agency which had raised no concerns regarding the abstraction or the infill to be used. The Chairman thanked Mr Wright for his attendance. The Clerk indicated that the application was due to be heard by the Planning Committee in May & he would be visiting Mr Wright, as Ward Councillor, on the following day. The Chairman invited Richard and Will Miles to address the meeting regarding the resubmission of their application for a wind turbine on land at Pincet Lane. Richard Miles indicated that they had reduced the height by 40% to 77 meters and that the size would be within the 500 Mw range and would be a direct drive one as opposed to one with a gear drive as it was thought that it would be quieter. He invited villagers to visit the exhibit6ion that was to be held on 27th April from 2.30 to 7.30 in the Sports Club on South Kilworth Road. He also indicated that they were considering a form of community benefit 11/00346/TPO Dag Lane Trees Anne Hampson the Parish Council’s Tree Warden addressed the meeting re her and Barry Houghton’s concern about the proposed application. The County Council’s Tree officer and Greg Thurlow agreed that there was another 20 years life remaining in the trees on site. There was some minor decay in one but generally they were in good health. Chris Knight acting as a spokesman for the property owners affected put forward points that included the possibility that the trees had outlived their usefulness, the maintenance costs involved, realignment of house drainage due to root heave, and canopy overhang. After some discussion it was agreed that the owners needed to consult their insurers and consulting structural engineers as to what would be the best option bearing in mind the fact that the properties are built on clay and that any removal of trees would have an effect on the existing foundations. The P C agreed that a phased removal and replanting with suitable species as indicated in the Parish Plan would not affect the overall environment. -FINANCIAL MATTERS The Clerk reported that the Parish Council will have to register with HMRC as an employer. The WI donation cheque for £200.00 which was to be the PC’s donation for a digital projector for village use had been returned as the village had been given a digital projector anonymously A ‘Metal Chieftain’ litter bin is to be ordered from Glasdon UK Ltd ( £364.00 +delivery) to be fixed outside the White Lion public house. On 6th April the current account was £9587.98 (£4426.87 ring fenced for the Heritage Initiative Grant) & the reserve account was £9962.53. -LOCAL ISSUES Stoney Track: There had been no feedback from County Councillor Hart . The provision of a definitive map of adopted highways within the village was also outstanding from Councillor Hart. The Chairman reported that he had responded to the County Council’s consultation on green wedges highlighting the various green areas including the Bogs, Millennium Green, and Stoney Farm and Barns VILLAGE STRUCTURE/PARISH PLAN There is a need to ensure that the Parish Plan is reviewed on a regular basis. The Chairman indicated that 3 people had registered as interested in joining the sub group. Questions had been received from a parishioner regarding the way that the process of providing affordable housing within the village had been carried out. The Clerk and the Chairman would respond. The Chairman indicated that the time limit for the receipt of interest for sites was approaching and that he would inform the Parish Council at its next meeting. -ALL WEATHER PLAY AREA A bill from ASB Fencing Ltd for £610.80 for repairs to the fencing of the Playground had been paid. On 7th March 2011 the amount of money in the Current Account was £5509.99 and in the Reserve Account £19779.09. -AOB The Chairman welcomed Chris Knight as the only nominated member of the new Parish Council. The Chairman indicated the need for nominations to the Parish Council. As this was the last meeting of the old council the Clerk expressed his thanks for the way that Council had treated him during the 4 years. The Chairman thanked The Clerk for his service of the Parish Council over the 4 years. -DATES OF NEXT MEETINGS As the Parish Council will not exist until late in May it was impossible to plan the actual date. The same applies to the Annual Meeting
What voters need to know for Thursday 5 May With district and parish elections, and a UK-wide referendum on Thursday 5 May, Harborough District Council is reminding voters what they need to know to have their say on polling day: • Polling stations will be open from 7am – 10pm. You should have received a card with details of your local polling station. If not, please call: 01858 828282 • When voting at a polling station, it’s helpful to take your poll card with you. But if you don’t have it, don’t let that stop you – you can still vote. • Polling station staff will give you ballot papers for the local election(s) and, if you are eligible to vote in the UK-wide referendum, a ballot paper for that too. Staff will not be able to give you ballot papers after 10pm, so do arrive in good time. • The referendum is on the voting system used for elections to the UK Parliament and the question being put to voters on Thursday 5 May is: “At present, the UK uses the ’first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?” • If you applied for a postal vote, it needs to be received by the Returning Officer by 10pm on Thursday 5 May. If you have left it too late to post back, you can drop it off at your polling station or Harborough District Council Offices, Adam & Eve Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire. For more information, visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
Page 6 Hi Jude, having just come across your website I thought I would drop you a line. Let me introduce myself. I am a former resident of North Kilworth, my maiden name was Linda Poll, and lived at the station house with my brother Michael, my mother Barbara and my father, James Poll, who was the last Station Master at Welford and Kilworth station which closed on 6th june 1966. As a family we left later on that same year for a new life in Southport when I was aged 10 and my brother Michael was 7. I noticed from your site that you have access to old photographs of happenings in the village and was wondering if you know anyone who might have photographs of the last train that went through the station. I dont think there would be many as it was at night and I remember as kids we were allowed to stay up and watch through a bedroom window and cameras were not as plentiful as they are now. I have read several of your articles and remember the village hall very well. When I was at school in the village we used to walk down to the hall and were served our school meals, Council Minutes of Meeting Pa back then it was a new building and took the place of the bowling pavilion that we used to use at the back of the old school near the church. Hope I havent taken up too much of your time with my ramblings and reminisces, it would be nice to hear from you if you have the time Thanks once again, Regards Mrs Linda Berry (nee Poll) Hello Judith! I'm writing to you from Louisville, KY, USA. I've recently been researching my family roots and discovered that the Cherry family/Cherrie/Che Rie lived in North Kilworth from around the 1400s-1600s. Information is pretty scarce online in regards to Kilworths history so I have no idea what sort of people my ancestors were. Can you point me in a good direction to locate some of my ancestors? Thank you Ellen (Cherry) White Can anyone help?

ST ANDREW’S CHURCH At the Easter Vestry and Annual Meeting on 14th April Gwilym Price stood down as Churchwarden of St Andrew’s, after many years’ dedicated service to the parish. He and Pam (who has been on the Church Council for over fifty years) have given unstinting support to the church and, as Rev Emma Davies said in her report, we all owe them both a tremendous debt of gratitude. Thank you, Gwil and Pam, for your long and loyal service. We are delighted that you can continue to serve on the PCC. No nominations were received for a successor to Gwil, so St Andrew’s currently has no Churchwarden, which is a cause for serious concern. The PCC will endeavour to ensure that the smooth running of the church continues and will be glad to receive help in any form from parishioners. Carolyn Sanders and Peter Lawrence are welcome new members to the PCC

Message from the Curate
Wasting time with God I have recently had long-awaited surgery on my hand. As a result, I spent a large part of April unable to drive, unable to use my right hand, and by necessity accepting the many generous offers of help that came my way. Are you aware just how incredibly useful our opposable thumbs are? Amazing... Forced to be idle, I realised how much time I normally spend dashing about, driving to and fro, packing lots into every day. I’ve had time to walk round the village, to go on a bus, to meet strangers, have lunch with friends. I now appreciate what retired life might be like – when I get to it! I have also had time to be legitimately idle. I have sat and watched the birds, thought, wondered about things, and prayed in that glorious unstructured way that we talk with someone we are absolutely comfortable with, absolutely ourselves – and with whom we can be comfortably silent. Page 9 work, holidays from duties and responsibilities, makes opportunities for us to experience alternative lives. These days it seems Leave from our that our culture encourages us to have it all and do it all – but that comes at a cost. We lose something in our activity-oriented world; the gentle pace of life that lets us notice the advance of spring, birdsong, the beauty of the lengthening days. We feel guilty if we are physically idle, having to label it ‘leisure’, and structure it in some way! And we seek to avoid silence. We shouldn’t. God set us the example, setting aside a holy day, a holiday, to rest, to regenerate. (Genesis 2 v2,3) The Sabbath, the seventh day, was for time with God, and for peace and quiet. It is good common sense, as is all God offers, and surely obvious to us all that such peace and quiet benefits us. Christianity sets Sunday aside as the day for what a saintly man I knew called ‘wasting time with God’. Sadly, we have taken it away from ourselves, filled it with shopping, sport, DIY... Perhaps we should consider reclaiming it. We have just celebrated Easter, commemorating Jesus Christ’s Resurrection to new life – remembered yearly in spring, but daily, hourly, moment by moment by Christians who have acknowledged this great gift of hope renewed. Every Sunday the worldwide Christian fellowship celebrates the Easter faith, the renewal, the hope, the promise of God - so Sunday is always a holy day. It is definitely worth while making time to waste, to set aside an hour or so just to be, to idle, to waste time with God. I have remembered during my time of enforced quiet that it is hugely valuable, and deeply rewarding. Things that seemed impossible drop back into proportion, and become manageable again. This is a gift we can give each other – space to do nothing, unchallenged and guilt-free. Let’s reclaim the joy of being still and thinking, having a peaceful Holy day. Best wishes, Jane Kennedy
St Nicholas’ Church, Stanford on Avon may be forced to close.
St Nicholas’ Church urgently needs your help. The team that is caring for and maintaining this beautiful church numbers just three. This task is impossible to sustain between us, and we now need to appeal for help from others. At the last Parochial Church Council meeting, with the support of Archdeacon David Newman and Revd Emma Davies, it was resolved that, unless a team of people could be found to undertake the practical tasks needed to keep the church open for services within the next nine months, the PCC will regrettably be forced to close the church for regular public worship. This was an immensely difficult decision to take but it amounts to a realistic facing-up to the situation in hand. Over the next nine months the monthly services at St. Nicholas will be further reduced while we seek to build up a team of volunteers. We appeal particularly to the villagers of Stanford and to members of other churches in the Avon Swift Group to offer help where they can. There is a list below of the tasks for which help is required in order to re-establish the monthly pattern of services – if you can help with any of these or in any other way please contact Judith Wiggins (01788 860607) or Revd. Emma Davies (01455 556573; emma.davies1@sky.com) • Setting up church for services and clearing at the end • Secretarial duties for all church matters • Church cleaning • Churchyard and building maintenance • Keeping the church open for visitors [and we do have a lot] • “Doing church flowers” • Fundraising

St Andrew’s Primary School Choir Easter Bonnet Pararade An Easter Bonnet Parade was held at school on Sunday 10th April. Lots of children from St Andrew’s primary school made hats for the parade. We had a competition to judge the best hat. First it was pre-school, next Alpha and then key stage 2. When the judges had seen all of them they announced the winners. In preschool Masie Goodman won, in key stage 1 Katie Sandercock and in key stage 2 Emily Sitford. The overall winner for the best bonnet was Eleanor Finlayson. Next we had an egg rolling competition down one of our hills. Kirstin Dargie came first in pre-school, in Key Stage 1 it was Elliot Lindop and Callum Boxall won key stage 2. There were lots of other games including ‘splat the rat’, Jenga and target throwing and there was also a cake sale. We all had lots of fun and raised £207. Maddie Lindop Music Evening St Andrew’s school raised money for Ellie Ball a victim of the earthquake in New Zealand and former pupil of St Andrew’s by holding a music evening at St Andrew’s church. The night which was called ‘St Andrew’s Steals the Spotlight’ raised £145. There were 25 acts including songs, dances and an incredible Indian dance act. Omega’s song was called Truth which was about the Tudors and Beta’s was Evacuate. People played instruments to show what talent they have. The Choir learnt three songs; When the Saints, Pack Up and Candyman. Everyone would agree it was a great evening. Ella Clarke The Eco Rap At St. Andrews primary school we have adopted lots of animals over the years, this year we adopted a tiger. In order to find a name for the tiger we held an eco rap competition. What we had to do with the eco rap is to write and perform a rap to do with saving the world. Two of our pupils called Chloe and Emily are in our eco committee and they organised the competition and chose the winner. The winner was Grace Lindop and she got to name the tiger. Wall of Excellence Ollie Morgan and Megan Kendal-Allen are the only two pupils that have ALL of their badges. Badges are awarded for earning 3 or 4 merit marks. Merit marks are earned for being good and doing good work. Ollie and Megan have been awarded their; 1st, 2nd and 3rd gold stripe Musical Excellence, Responsibility, Community, Eco-World, Friendship and Physical Excellence. (Megan also has all of her silver stripes) Abigail Robertson
THE KILWORTH CHALLENGE on 28-29th May 2011
It`s that time of year again. The Kilworth Challenge is heading for another super year on the weekend of the late May Bank Holiday of 28-29th May 2011. The Committee has been hard at it creating another challenging set of challenges for the 45 teams participating. As usual the teams will face the mix of hard physically demanding ones , excruciating puzzles that will tax them mentally and some that are just plain funny and enjoyable to do ……… we have of course tried them all out personally. We will be relying on the support of all the people that help us marshalling. Those of you that have done it in previous years can expect the phone call soon. We are of course always looking for new people that will help ……… if you are interested please contact any one of the organizers Colin Clark, Paul Whitehead, Mike Lawrence, Bruce Phillips, Mick Faulkner, Duncan Moss, Manfred Morris, Chris Mitchell and Nick Otter. You might like to know that the Kilworth Challenge won one of the fund raising awards at the recent 2010 Market Harborough Awards Evening. Of course we are extremely pleased to have been recognised by the locality but our main aim has always been primarily to raise funds to enable disadvantaged and disabled kids to enjoy the outdoors more, and to support local good causes so putting something back into the community in which we belong and depend upon to make the Challenge a success. This year we hope to continue to raise the outstanding amounts that we have done in the past. The cumulative total now raised since 1990 when the Challenge started is in excess of eight hundred thousand pounds. Quite an unbelievable amount for such a small community to generate …… we are permanently grateful for all the teams that take part and do the hard work in this respect. So please support the Kilworth Challenge this year. Please help us to make it another great success this year. Please help us provide the opportunity for those children to enjoy the outdoors and at the same time put something back into our own community. The contact number for any further information or if you wish to help in any way is Nick Otter on 01858 882067 or by email to thekilworthchallenge@hotmail.co.uk. Say Hello to Sue & Andy Winstanley
If you say ‘Hello’ to Sue and Andy Winstanley you are quite likely to finish up in a yoga class or supporting Wigan FC. Don’t let that put you off, because one of those could be good for your health. Sue hails from Bromsgrove, and Andy from Wigan and they met 12 years ago at the Alliance & Leicester whilst working on an IT project. Their first home was in the city of Leicester, and they moved to Elmcroft Road 4 years ago having been married for 10. They actively sought a village community with a pub (see below) and their life style in NK is very important to them. So, you saying ‘Hello’ is important to both of them. Their ambition is to retire to Portugal by the time Andy is 55 (he’s 38) with Sue continuing her yoga, because it’s as much a part of her life as it is a business. Sue has a passion for learning which led her to progress from the tedium of the gym to yoga, and now it’s an important part of her approach to a healthy body and a healthy mind. Yoga has endless opportunities for learning something new! With that goes her respect for the natural world, and the individuality of people. So she’s progressed a long way from using yoga to get into her wedding dress! Yoga has also helped her get respectable - moving from a rock chick at the Reading festival to running our 49ers club. Sue runs yoga classes at 7pm on Monday (sports club), 4.30pm Wednesday (golf club) and 7pm Wednesday evening (village hall). Details at www.bluemountainyoga.co.uk There is also a sociable half hour Flex and Stretch session that is attended by many of the more mature villagers wishing to keep their joints mobile. They are nearly all pensioners, but under 60’s are most welcome provided they enter the community spirit that prevails, and that they can keep up with Kath Jones and co. Ring 881798 for details of this £1.50 session. Sue’s other interests include organic vegetable gardening, travel, spending time with the dogs, reading, wildlife watching and outdoors peace and quiet. Andy’s interests are Wigan FC, their dogs, Sue, and living in NK. He refuses to be drawn on the order! He’s worked in financial services for 20 years (fixed Gary Neville up with a mortgage), and is now working as an independent consultant. He is currently working for Nationwide designing a point of sale system that will allow customers to walk into a branch and walk out with a legal mortgage offer. We hope his systems perform better than his pubs. He was a member of the Swan darts team, and we know what happened to that. Undaunted, he joined the White Lion darts team. Where will the curse strike next? At least they’ve just won the silver plate trophy before the demise of the Lion. Andy feels that bankers’ bonuses is an easy target, and is conscious that a lot of unheralded bank staff really earn their bonus. He thinks there should be more emphasis on controlling reckless, irresponsible borrowing by joe public and irresponsible lending by the banks. The bottom line with Sue and Andy figuring in the NK news is that they really value their life style and what they have in our community – so please say ‘Hello’ to them.

This is a true story, proving how fascinating the mind of a 6-yeart old is. A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to n her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig b was trying to gather the building material for his home. She read re ……’and so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said:’ Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?’ The teacher paused then asked the class :’And what do you think the man said?’ One little boy raised his hand very matter-of-factly……I think the man would have said‘Well, damn me!! A talking pig!’ The teacher was unable to teach for the next ten minutes. Please send in any printable jokes to the editors.

Page 12 The Snozzcumber resembles a cucumber & varies from nine to twelve feet long. It is striped lengthwise black and white, with wart-like growths all over its surface. Along with Frobscottle, it is the sole diet of the BFG until he has captured the man-eaters. Then he feeds them snozzcumbers for the rest of their lives.
