November 2011 Well me hearties and shiver me timbers!! A large group of land-lubbers from North Kilworth were held captive by a band of Pirates from Penzance on Saturday 25th June when they happened to be in the vicinity of Kilworth House Theatre. It was lucky that they were all ‘orphans’ and weren’t just at
North Kilworth News Rocket Man! When Guido Fawkes, Robert Catesby plus fellow conspirators attempted to launch King James 1st into earth orbit at the State opening of Parliament in November 1605, little could they have imagined that their exploits would continue to be commemorated 406 years later with yet another bonfire night celebration. However they will gain no pleasure from that fact, if they are somewhere looking down from above on the burning fires and exploding fireworks on November 5th. Their Baldrick like cunning plan went spectacularly awry when, after a tip-off, poor old Guido was arrested by soldiers under the Parliament building with a considerable amount of gunpowder in his possession. You can imagine Edmund Blackadder, if he had been in on the plot, utter his immortal line of “Oh god!” It would have been quite difficult to explain

that one away! Being an oppressed minority religious group of Catholics was the reason for their anger against the King, probably very just. But it was seen that blowing up Parliament and its occupants was not an ideal solution to the problem. Many of the plotters were shot but those who were captured met an extremely grizzly fate and no, Guy wasn’t burned on a bonfire although that is how we remember him, as the fireworks remind us of the gunpowder. In fact James ordered that his people should have a great bonfire on the night of November 5th to celebrate his survival. Well you can’t argue with royalty! Now our village will once again assemble, hopefully in great numbers, to celebrate those events after what has been a long absence. I am told that there used to be an annual bonfire event in NK on the Sports Field and that before that it was held in the old station yard. Sadly, it has not featured for many a year on the village social calendar so it’s more than welcome news to see the event resurrected by Sharon, Natalie and their team this year- see advert below. It should be a really fantastic night where the village gathers in force to support an event that is in aid of a more than worthy cause. We must all give a big thank-you to the organising team and hope that their efforts lead to bonfire night returning to its annual spot in the village timetable. Where there’s a will there’s a way!

Theft in North Kilworth. The yard at the Close, Green Lane, North Kilworth was broken into last night - 19th October, sometime between 6.00pm and 9.45pm. The green Ifor William’s horse trailer was stolen. Did anyone see or hear anything? They must have made some noise stealing it as it was clamped and locked and there are large tyre marks in the drive. Please contact either Belinda on 01858 880029 or Vikki on 01858 880184 Leics Constabulary is asking people to avoid the risk of car theft this winter. Frost is forecast in the next few days, which may result in frozen windscreens. Last winter dozens of cars were stolen in Leicestershire while owners left them defrosting with their car engines running. These days vehicle security means it is very difficult to steal a car unless you have the keys.Thieves know this, and see frosty mornings as an opportunity. They get up early, and will be looking for cars to steal. While it may be tempting to nip back into your house or flat while the windscreen is clearing, you should stay with your vehicle. If you find your car has been stolen while you have left your keys in it, you may find your insurance will not cover you. You could also be guilty of an offence if you leave the engine running while it is parked on the road.” For more crime prevention advice, see: http://support.leics.police.uk/crime-prevention If you have information about car crime, phone Leics. Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) have found that unfair sales practices targeted at elderly and vulnerable consumers are particularly prevalent in doorstep sales. Users of mobility aids may be more likely to be vulnerable when making purchasing decisions, due to their limited mobility and agerelated conditions. More than 4,000 complaints in respect of mobility aids sales have been made to Consumer Direct in each of the last three years. In addition, they have found that complaints about unfair sales practices in this sector are highest for doorstep sales.
The OFT launched a doorstep selling consumer awareness campaign, with specific emphasis on mobility aids to empower consumers against unfair doorstep selling & have recently put together a mobility aids leaflet to coincide with the campaign. You can download it from here: http://www.oft.gov.uk/OFTwork/consumer-protection/campaign1112/doorstep/Alternatively it will be available to order from Friday 7 October. Please phone 0800 389 3158 to order copies. The Home Office is publishing a monthly e-bulletin to keep people up to date on the introduction of police and crime commissioners (PCCs). The bulletins will include information on the PCCs’ potential relationship with other local leaders, and will run until the introduction of PCCs in November 2012. You can see more information and download the bulletins here: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/publications/police/policecrime-comms-bulletin/ If you would like to sign up to receive the bulletins by email, please send your email details to Kerry Charlesworth of the Home Office at Kerry.Charlesworth@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk and you will be added to the list. On October 17th 2011, the police national single non-emergency number – 101 – will be rolled out across the Leicestershire Force area. All 43 Chief Constables have agreed to adopt 101, which already operates in a four forces with great success. From October 17 2011, calling 101 will replace the dialling of 0116 222 2222 for all non-emergency calls. Members of the public can call 101 for updates on cases, to add information to an existing case or to contact their local officer. For emergencies you will continue to call 999. For further information on how and when to use this new non-emergency number from 17th October 2011, go to the 101- What you need to know pages on the Leicestershire Neighbourhood Watch Association website.
Dear Ed.
YOUR LETTERS I would like to say a big thank-you to Lynn and Andy Wall for the excellent way that they are looking after the grounds in the churchyard. In the past when I have been up to put flowers on the grave, edges have not been attended to and on one occasion a small ornament was broken. It is now a pleasure to go and see a neat and tidy churchyard. Cilla Squires

Elsewhere it is reported that the expensive new speed indicator at the Village gateway has been vandalised and will be repaired at a cost to every household in the Village instead of those funds being used for more beneficial enhancement. Yet repaired it must be having, in the short working lifetime, confirmed electronically the incredibly high speeds on the main road. The cretin responsible was actually a villager and is identifiable but in the interests of common sense no further action is being taken in the hope that those responsible realise that the device is not there to provide evidence in court….merely to provide evidence for a higher level of investment in calming measures by the County Council. Yours sincerely, “Ariel”

I’m all right Jack, I’ve recycled my pumpkin! As spooky traditions go, no Halloween would be complete without a pumpkin, but don’t forget they can be recycled. Harborough District Council is encouraging environmentally-friendly residents to recycle pumpkins, which are often carved out by children to make Jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween, by putting them in the food waste bins. These can then be collected from the kerb-side, as part of the weekly food waste rounds, to ensure pumpkins are recycled as compost, instead of going to landfill. Landfill waste can produce methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases, which can contribute to climate change. By placing food waste in the caddies given to all homes in the district earlier this year, it can be recycled without harming the environment. New recycling banks to help boost recycling. New recycling banks have been introduced across the district to help residents dispose of old or unwanted electrical items. Residents are able to bring along small electrical items, preferably with the batteries removed, after successful trial schemes showed people were keen to recycle electrical goods. The four banks are located at the following sites, High Street Car Park, Fleckney, School Road Car Park, Kibworth, Council Offices Car Park, Market Harborough and The Commons Car Park, Market Harborough. They are visible by the unique pink colour and have been introduced in partnership between Harborough District Council and Grantham-based recycling company Environcom. It is hoped the banks will help further boost Harborough district’s recycling rate to help keep the council the best recycling authority in Leicestershire and one of the best in the country. Notes from the Parish Council Meeting held on 17th October 2011
Page 5
Present: Councillors Green, Knight and Sandercock, Councillor Hardwick as Vice Chairman took the Chair. Brian Smith, Parish Clerk and Ward Member Bosworth Ward HDC together with 10 members of the public. QUESTION TIME FOR PARISHIONERS 1. Peter Morgan as Chairman of the Village Hall Committee reminded the Parish Council that they had previously agreed by internal consultation but not formally to the Parish Council to act as a third party contributor in their attempts to secure funding for improvements for the Village Hall. It was pointed out that repayment would be made as and when circumstances permitted. The Parish Council agreed to guarantee an amount of £1800. The Clerk was requested to write formally to Peter Morgan confirming the Parish Council’s agreement. 2. Peter Jones informed the meeting that a meeting had been called for 31st October when the details of the preferred site and preferred partner for the affordable housing proposal would be discussed. Peter Jones would agree the agenda with the Chairman of the Parish Council prior to the meeting. Councillor Hardwick expressed the thanks of the Parish Council for the work that he had undertaken in bringing forward the proposals for affordable housing in the village. 3. A parishioner raised concerns regarding the condition of the hedge on the northern side of the A4304 between Rosedale and Pincet Lane. He also raised the question of the access to the North Kilworth Sports Club which is over highway land. The Clerk undertook to contact the County Council regarding both problems. 4. It was noted that the next meeting of the Millennium Green Trustees would be held on 19th November at 9.30 am in the Village Hall. 5. The Clerk was requested to place the following items on the Agenda for the next meeting: a) Parish Council Assets: b) Visibility problems at junction of High Street and Station Road. c) Floodlit Area Car Park. d) Exits to Dag Lane Play Area. PLANNING MATTERS 11/01261/FUL: Proposal: Erection of a dwelling: 3 High Street North Kilworth Leicestershire The Parish Council considered that there was a lack of parking facilities, overlooking of adjacent properties and traffic implications on the proposed access to High Street. The Clerk was requested to write to HDC highlighting the reasons in policy terms recommending refusal. 11/01120/FUL: Proposal: Erection of 77 metre high wind turbine and associated infrastructure: Land to the rear of Sparrow Lodge Pincet Lane North Kilworth. The Clerk reported that the application had not been determined at the last Planning Committee due to the size of the Agenda. The Planning Committee would reconvene on 25th October when the application would be dealt with. FINANCIAL MATTERS The Clerk informed the meeting that as of close of business on 23rd September 2011 the current account stood at £14,452.58 of which £3929.37 was available for funding heritage based projects. The reserve account stood at £6465.00. VILLAGE STRUCTURE/LOCAL ISSUES The Clerk reported that a Speed Indicator Device had been placed on Station Road between 7th October and 14th October and had recorded 13577 activations. Of those, the highest recorded speed was 66 mph, the average speed was 35 mph and that 87.5% of activations (11880) were in excess of 30 mph. The Clerk also reported that the sign had been vandalised with the polycarbonate front cover broken. He reported that the sign will be returned to the supplier and that the cost would be in the region of £100 including carriage. The Parish Council agreed to purchase a replacement salt bin at the junction of South Kilworth Road and Wash Pit Lane. The Clerk was requested to contact County Highways to ensure that one was available for use in adverse weather. REQUEST FOR PERMISSION TO PLACE SOLAR PANELS ON COUNCIL PROPERTY The Clerk was requested to write to Matthew Allan a Director of the Village Power CIC to formally give permission as owners of North Kilworth Sports Club to the placing of solar panels on the roof of the club. PARISH PLAN It was reported that there had been a recent meeting of the Parish Plan Sub Committee. In the absence of Councillor Lawrence it was not possible to give a date for the next meeting. The Clerk agreed to contact Stephen Pointer who is the Planning Policy Officer at HDC to see if he would attend the next meeting when the date is known. ALL WEATHER PLAY AREA The Chairman welcomed Dorothy Howie from the Floodlit Sports Sub Committee. Mrs Howie raised the question of the use by the school of the car park adjacent to the floodlit area. On behalf of the committee she expressed concern that in time there would be a need to resurface the area. It was considered that the best way forward would be for Councillor Lawrence as a school governor to discuss the matter with the Governors. The Clerk agreed to relieve Julie Fish of some of the day to day administrative work associated with the play area. The Clerk agreed to chase the Play Area Inspection undertaken by HDC. Mrs Howie also highlighted the fact that there was £4313 sitting in the coffers of HDC awaiting a proposal to spend it on tangible capital project and asked that a note to this effect be placed in the North Kilworth Newsletter. A Beach Party will be held on 12th November and a Safari Supper will be held on 3rd March 2012. The Clerk reported that he had banked £100. At the close of business on 1st September 2011 the amount of money held in the Current Account was £6060.00 and not £6304.77 as previously reported and the amount held in the Reserve Account on 30th June 2011 was £19788.98. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on 14th November 2011 in the Belgrave Village Hall Church Street at 7.45 pm.

NORTH KILWORTH BELGRAVE VILLAGE HALL It was with great sadness that the Trustees of the Village Hall learned of the death of Andrew Emery. Andrew had been involved from the beginning with the re-development of the hall. He drew up the plans, liaised with the planning office and builders and was very supportive in the hall's regeneration over the last few years. Our condolences to Bunty - he will be sadly missed. The recent decision to move the Lunch Alfresco back to its original mid-summer date was re-considered by the Trustees. We do not wish to conflict with the Church fund raising event or other organisations activities in the summer and will now make the first Sunday in September a regular feature. As the Family Kilworth Challenge takes place on a Saturday there should be no conflict with dates. Thanks to everyone who supported the recent Lunch Alfresco - the generosity of the hosts and participants has raised in excess of £600 - much We needed income towards the continued improvement and running of the hall. The Village Hall Christmas Quiz will be on Saturday 3rd December. The theme is 'Around the World in 80 questions'.Tickets £8 available from Committee members from November. Last year's event was very enjoyable with excellent food - please come again!!

First Steps On the 10th and 11th October Alpha Reception have been learning all about road safety. First Steps teaches reception children how to cross the road safely. They learn about car park safety and the green cross code. The children went into the car park and looked at the lights on the cars; reverse lights, indicator lights and headlights. Then the children learnt how to cross the road with Greg “The Leader”, parent helpers and teachers. Then back to the classroom for hot chocolate….Yum Yum! By Ella Clarke

Romulus & Remus stories It was a baking day and Romulus and Remus were slaving away with only a tiny weenie bit of a breeze that slowly ruffled and flowed through their hair. “I’m sweating like mad” exclaimed Romulus thinking he would get a ridiculous advantage after Romulus had got the water system to work. As time went by Remus decided to run away. Suddenly Remus vanished into a speck of dust. Remus, Romulus bellowed unaware of what was about to happen. “Hello” whispered Remus. “What do you think you are doing?” said Romulus, really worried about his brother. “Hush” he whispered again. They both hid behind a bush. “Holy sausages” gasped Romulus scared about the object stumbling around, like he was unconscious. When it had gone they sneaked out of the bush and struck down the road. After a while they reached the Coliseum. Gladiators were training. “This is outstanding” said Remus “Let’s go and watch” So off they went to go and watch. “Yuck that’s horrible why is there so much blood?” said remus. “I don’t know but it sure is brutal” said Romulus. The two men carried on watching. At last Remus said “Let’s get out of here!” Whilst they were leaving they decided to see the King to ask him if they could borrow some of his money and gold, “Yes!!!” cried the king, “HORRAY!” screamed Romulus and Remus. “Ahr...that’s nice”, they said with all their new money piled next to them and servants running after them. Residential Trip to Redridge Redridge Recount By Megan Kendell-Allen Aged 10
On Monday 19th September Omega class travelled on a bus to Redridge in Wales on a residential trip. Mrs Holmes and Miss Smith accompanied us on the trip. To build our confidence, conquer fears and try new sports was the reason we went to Redridge. When we arrived we got sorted into rooms and unpacked our bags. Soon afterwards we were starting our first activities. The year 5s climbed the log tower while the year 6s travelled down the zip wire. This is how I felt; quivering at the summit of a ten metre high rusted iron platform, my stomach churned while blood pounded in my ears. While my friends chattered I was shivering (was it the cold or was it my nerves?) Entranced by the height I was scared to travel downwards. As Bryn spoke to me the wind made me feel weak, my legs were numb. Freezing, I got pushed off the platform. I was scared, I still conquered it. After the zip wire we climbed the log tower and the climbing wall. Later, we went on a muddy night walk, then went to bed. We woke up early Tuesday morning, got dressed and had breakfast. Not long after breakfast, we were on a coach heading towards cliff faces and caves. When we arrived we had to carry ropes and other equipment down to the cliffs. Arriving hot and sweaty we dumped our stuff under an archway. Clipped onto a harness we walked down the rocky pathway to the bottom of the cliffs. Neil picked me to demonstrate how to climb the rocks. As soon as I got to the top they were shouting that I went the hard way, to be honest I thought it was easy. After climbing we went abseiling, lying on the edge of the cliff, I was ready to abseil down. We also did caving and later we did orienteering. Wednesday was when we went kayaking on a lake and Ethan capsized. After lunch was archery and artificial caving. The night activity was watching a film called Gnomeo and Juliet. On Thursday we journeyed down the River Severn, venturing down rapids was great fun! We raced from bridge to bridge, then parked at a bank to heave the boats onto land. In the evening we had a disco, the girls took forever to get ready! Still, it was great fun!!! Friday was packing and sorting day. When we finished packing we went hill walking. After that we unfortunately had to leave Redridge, heading home. We arrived back to our excited parents at 4:30 on the 23rd of September after an action-packed week in Wales! REDRIDGE WAS GREAT I WISH I COULD HAVE STAYED!

Message from the Curate
Is there truth in the rumour…? There is a rumour abroad to the effect that I am going to move to Hampshire – to be nearer my granddaughter and her family. True or false? Read on! A rumour is an odd thing – no-one knows where it started or where it will finish up. Rumour makes us wonder about things. Sometimes it can be destructive and cruel. Sometimes it can be a distortion of the truth – but also it can at its root BE the truth! There is a rumour that God is about in the world. No-one knows where that started. There are loads of ancient stories and writings about the rumour of God. Some of them are collected into our Christian Bible, and some in other forms, cultures and faiths. There is truth in that rumour. It has been going about the world since time immemorial, in all cultures and societies, and still rumbles on and on. There’s lots of evidence to support it. We hear constant stories about the presence of God in people’s lives, times when God has intervened, saved and supported, or shown up as human love and compassion in difficult times. Not all those stories have been from people of faith, but all of them have Page 9 acted like a rumour – they have caused people to wonder, to enquire… Of course, rumour needs testing. It is always worth checking to see if there IS truth in it. If we can’t track the origin of it, we have to find ways to prove or disprove it. We can start by asking questions, seeking evidence. For the rumour of God, reflection on our own experiences is good, as is listening to the experience of others with an open mind - and prayer is helpful. Going to the source is good, laying the facts openly before people. That is what the Gospel writers did – they have left us with some hard evidence and lots of teaching that we can explore in support of the rumour of God. It needs to be reflected upon though – it would be easy to get a false impression. We have to be careful to look at all the evidence – partial knowledge if often the source of destructive rumours... There was a lad in prison – I couldn’t remember him by name, but he told me recently that something I’d said had started the rumour of God in his head and heart. Now he’s been to Chapel, read the Bible, and, importantly, related books to help him understand. I have no idea what I said, or when, but clearly somewhere a seed was sown, and the rumour of God has hit him, and study and exploration have won him. As to the rumour of my departure to Hampshire – that one’s not true – despite the attraction of my granddaughter and her family! I’ll be staying in Leicestershire with my dear mother… Listen for the rumour of God – it’s out there… With best wishes, Jane Kennedy - of Leicestershire

NORTH KILWORTH READING GROUP Thursday, 24th November is the date of the next meeting of the N.K.R.G., 8.00PM, venue tba Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John le Carre is the book under discussion. An intelligence officer is recalled from retirement when there are signs that one of the top- ranking officers of the British Secret Intelligence Service is a Soviet spy. Most of us will have read this book before and probably seen the film starring Alec Guinness. Now there is a new film with a new Smiley so although the story remains the same and is still a good read comparisons can be made on several fronts. Comments always welcome.

Say Hello To: Smith & Jones
It would be very much in your interests to say ‘Hello’ to Smith and Jones. They narrowly escaped death at the hands of those Bolivian soldiers, and they are alive and well in North Kilworth. Like their namesakes, Rachel Smith and Simon Jones are dangerous to know – they have a private bar in their garage. After their hospitality some people have struggled to cross the road from Millenium Close and head for the safety of the rest of the village. If this couple don’t get you with their Carling they will entice you with their latest venture, which involves selling wines from their beloved South Africa.
Simon is a welcome edition to the village, because he supports Southampton. Rachel supports Stoke City, so all three of us have the common bond that our teams play in red and white stripes and tend to beat Leicester City. Simon was born on Christmas Eve 1970 in Trowbridge, and supports Bath RFC. Thrown out of the 6th form he started work at TSB, before moving to Tesco where he has been for 17 years. He’s always been involved in distribution, progressing from clerk/forklift truck driver to depot manager in four locations in England, plus Belfast and Antrim. He’s written the supply chain strategy for Tesco India and led a £130m project on the Middlesborough distribution centre. He is currently GM at Daventry clothing centre, which employs 750 People. Before we look at Rachel, a few words on Tesco. Outside the government they are the biggest employer in the UK. For every £8 we spend, £1 of it we spend in Tesco. World wide the company employs one person every 20 minutes. One of those is Rachel!
So how come Simon and Rachel chose each other from all those people? He thought her bossy, but easy on the eye, and she thought he sounded sexy when they first spoke about employee issues. Rachel hails from Stoke; lived two streets from Robbie Williams; has been with Tesco for 22 years; worked in many stores, and is currently Head of HR for IT and International Operations – with 800 people at Head Office in Hertfordshire. She commutes most days. (Enough to make you drink in your garage!) Rachel and Simon met 5 years ago; they soon moved to NK, and they have many joint interests. Simon captains Running on Carling in the Kilworth Challenge, whilst Rachel led the fund raising that last year raised a massive £6,300 for charity – topping the fundraisers. Rachel persuaded Tesco to supply the sausages to the quiz night. Simon plays darts for the White Lion, and they both practise regularly (you’ll never believe this, but that’s in the garage as well). They’ve played golf – Simon’s had a lesson from Sandy Lyle; tennis at the all weather, and yoga with Sue Winstanley (not in the garage). Simon has two girls who are very important to him; Harriet is 10 and Isobel is 7. He visits them every other week – which means he’s not in NK every weekend. They do occasionally enjoy a visit to NK, so you might see them around. Take care, the girls are into karate. Although they do have a proper house, it seems a good idea to invite you to see the garage. They have recently invested in a stock of Stony Brook South African wine, and have had 40 potential customers attend a tasting session in the village hall. If the market develops, this little sideline will give them a break from the day job, so please - if you are interested in quality wine say ‘Hello’ to Rachel on 07561 103382 or Simon on 07561 103386 DB

Dear Jude, I imagine you will have seen the current "advert" on the beeb encouraging people to "give an hour" of their time to help the many millions of people who, in spite of living in a technological age, have never used the internet. Also I note on the North Kilworth web site there is an item suggesting people donate their "old" PC's to those who yet do not have the benefit of such modern information providing and communication devices. No doubt there are many people in our area who would dearly love to enter the world of modern technology but who think it is too technical or who would just like the opportunity or maybe a little gentle persuasion in opening up the world that many of us now take for granted. Even though I am in my mid seventies and certainly not a computer "whiz-kid" I am prepared to "donate an hour or two of my time" to help anybody who would welcome an introduction to this subject. I wondered whether it may be useful to put an item in the monthly newsletter to "test the water" as to whether there is demand for such an opportunity? Regards - Peter Anderson

The PCC would like to thank everyone who made the Harvest Supper on 14th October such a success. Fifty-nine people sat down to an excellent meal and a whopping £568 was made to swell much needed church funds. Another such meal is planned for the end of January and the profits will be given to a needy village organization.
Special thanks to Carolyn, Hattie and David who carried on regardless after such a difficult and emotional day.
