TEAM VICAR’S LETTER Time for a personal harvest festival October is here, a familiar autumnal chill is in the air and we find ourselves again firmly in Harvest Festival season, with churches full of fresh fruit and vegetables, looking and smelling wonderful. Harvest is a time when we take stock of the fruits gathered from the soil of our fields and gardens, when we give thanks to God for the bounty of his creation, and when we remember farmers and others who have provided us with the food on our table. It is a time, too, to call to mind those who do not have enough food or other basic necessities through famine, or poverty or war, and to pray for them. October is also the month when time shifts and we ease back again to GMT by regaining the hour that was lost in the Spring. It occurs to me, then, that we have the gift of an extra hour this month, and in this busy, pressured world, extra time is what many people seem to crave. Now, I know that this hour appears in the middle of the night, of course, so most of us do not recognise it as useful for anything but to catch up on sleep. However, the gift of an extra hour in this harvest season set me thinking about what we do with small gifts of time. If we were to spread an hour out over the course of a whole month it would equate to about 2 minutes’ time each day. That may seem far too small a time in which to do anything useful. However, I suggest that in spiritual terms it could be of great value. Most of us could find just two minutes on our own in a day and what better way in this harvest season of using a couple of minutes than to take stock of all the good things we have, and to lift to God our needs and worries? In short, why not have our own mini personal Harvest Thanksgiving each day? What I suggest is this: begin your 2-minute slot by calling to mind all the good things you have – not just the food on your table or the roof over your head, but also the people who give warmth to your life, and the little, unexpected blessings that happen almost unnoticed. Imagine laying them out before God and giving silent thanks. Then take stock of the situations which are causing you worry or concern. Lay these out before God too and ask for God’s presence and help in them. Finally, ask God to surround you with the peace and protection of Christ. This prayer exercise can be a good way to begin or end the day, but whatever time you find your two minutes, and wherever you happen to be, I guarantee this mini harvest festival time will bear much fruit – fruit that will last. God’s blessing to you all. Revd Emma Davies

WHISKY APPRECIATION SOCIETY OF SOUTH KILWORTH (WASOSK) The fourth Whisky Appreciation Society meeting took place at 3 Tanser Cottages on Friday 26th August, following a summer break. New members joining at the meeting were John Boffey and Michael Murphy. John introduced an Old Pulteney and Michael brought an Isle of Jura for the collection, both of which were much appreciated. Two other new additions included a Bowmore Legend and Balvenie Doublewood. Members at the meeting also enjoyed a further installment of the extensive knowledge of our senior member David Burd, on the subject of defunct and closed distilleries. Ian Weightman

KILWORTH FAMILY CHALLEGE 2011 Another super day for the Kilworth Challenge. On Saturday 3rd September the children and families of the village had the chance to try out many of the challenges that were used in the main Challenge held at the end of May. This is a much awaited event as the children of adults competing in May remain desperate to try them out for themselves and to show it should really be done. Today was the opportunity ….. the Kilworth Family Challenge 2011 …… the chance to put Dad and Mum to shame. Twelve teams enrolled with ages from 5 to 15, each one with an accompanying adult (and more in most cases), and competed over a 5 mile course in the vicinity of the villages of North and South Kilworth. The challenges included the ducking stool, 4-person ski racing, fuzzy felts, kart racing, scaled up quoits, slippy slope climbing, mirror hats, 2-person space hoppers (termed `boing boings`) and the much demanded obstacle course with lots of mud. It was a highly entertaining and enjoyable day, everyone receiving a medal and T shirt to commemorate the event. In a close finish, the winners were the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Cotterel family from `South`. They were presented with the trophy at the end of the afternoon following a BBQ. Runners-up were Molly`s Gang, the Sandecott family also from `South` and third place taken by Three Men in Black, One in Brown, the Faulkner family from `North`. The next main Kilworth Challenge will be held in early June 2012 when it is hoped and anticipated that the cumulative amount raised over the life of the Challenge will exceed the million pound mark ……….. a truly amazing total and a day for even more celebration. As ever, the monies raised will be given to 3 named charities and to local good causes. The organizers hope that the high level of support from local individuals, landowners and companies will be forthcoming again, all of which is very much appreciated and without which the Challenge would not be able to function ……… and indeed the Family Challenge too. LUNCHEON CLUB August 25th An increased number of 22 enjoyed a lunch at Kilworth Springs. The main course consisted of Gammon served with baby new potatoes and glazed carrots. The dessert of trifle was followed by tea or coffee. We welcomed some newcomers Mr & Mrs Williams and Rita Hallam’s sister Francis along with our youngest participant, Rita’s grandson William. The fine weather rounded off a most enjoyable occasion. September 22nd Louise Boffey provided us with a five star lunch. Did the recipes come from the menus of Fawlty Towers? The main course was very tasty lasagna which was followed by stewed apple with a delicious meringue topping. Many thanks to Louise for the hard work put in to provide us with such a wonderful lunch. Attendance was back down to seventeen with the noted absence of Rita Byrne. David Burd

FAWLTY TOWERS "It'll Be Alright On The Night! How many times have I heard that over the past few months ? Coming back from a week away on the Wednesday before the show (not the best time to go away), we all went to rehearsal and I have to say I didn’t get a wink of sleep that night! Usual goings on such as lines forgotten, props forgotten, sets falling down ….. nothing new there. One member of the cast could only remember one of his lines and kept repeating that one line, which caused chaos and much laughter among the rest. Then I heard that another of the cast had broken ribs falling off a ladder and might not even make it back into the country let alone on the stage! So after a frantic phone call had to find a replacement on dress rehearsal night! But as those of you who came and supported us saw that it was actually "alright on the night" The cast were fantastic and it was a great show. Matt especially is just great and pulls it all together. So a big Thank-You to all involved Louise Boffey Job Opportunity for creative type with lots of patience suffering from insomnia - Local Drama Group need Producer!

W.I. MEETING In anticipation of the fast approaching festive season, members were shown by Kris Bullard how to make our own “Quick Christmas Cards.” Each of us was given our own “starter kit” and we all attempted to make a card, with varying degrees of success! Kris showed examples of her work which were beautiful and something we can aspire to achieve. Next month’s meeting is on 18th October when Pat Courtney will be entertaining us. New members are always welcome. Joanna Wilson

THANK YOU I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people in the village who sent me messages, cards, telephone calls, and for all your kind understanding words after the loss of my beloved dog Jasper at the end of August …… I have been deeply touched. I also would like to thank so much the friends / neighbours who offered their help on the day he was put to sleep at home. The cottage is very empty without him and I miss his presence very much; but I take some comfort in knowing that after a wonderful long sixteen years of having him in my life, that for him it was a kind peaceful and dignified end to his life …… Thanks again to you all. Philippa Welford Road

THANKS FOR TEA & TAT IN JULY

LPG AND OIL - UPDATE LPG Please let us know if you use LPG and would like to know more about the fixed rate deal with Calor. Oil Thank you to those who were able to and did attend the meeting held at the start of September – we discussed the single-supplier offer from Watsons and almost everybody in attendance decided to join in with the deal. All registered KOIL members received an email with the details and again, almost all have decided to sign up to the Watsons deal. The next order is imminent so check your tanks and let me know if you want a top-up. Oil prices have risen since our last order, but if you fill up now you’re likely to beat the crazy December prices we see pretty much every year. Below are the order dates for the next 12 months – we will review these as the winter progresses and add orders if we have any severe cold snaps. Hopefully knowing the order schedule will allow you to plan ahead, though. The deadline for being included on any particular order will be 5pm the day before and will be delivered the following week. 7th October 6th January 6th April 28th October 20th January 22nd June th th 18 November 10 February 17th August nd th 2 December 9 March We have done two ‘test’ runs on price since the August order and are delighted to report that Watsons came out top on both occasions. The last Watsons order also beat a YOBCO delivery by 6p per litre in the same week – we’re not promising to be the cheapest every time, but we’re clearly achieving great savings without making a profit! Please spread the word, as the more members we have the more buying power we gain. Our reach is growing, with members in Guilsborough, Welford, Naseby as well as the Kilworths, so remember there’s no geographic limit on membership. Thanks for your support. EDITORIAL Starting with an apology …. last month I forgot to include Audrey’s thanks to Sarah for arranging the calor gas supply and for all her hard work. Audrey was organized and gave me her note in good time but unfortunately it got lost in my filing system (untidy desk) so I am very sorry for that. I don’t think I very often miss peoples’ contributions out but apologies if there have been some others. I do know that occasionally emails get lost in the ether – it happened to the Vicars letter this month but I chased that up as I know to expect it. I usually try to reply to peoples emails to let them know I have got it but please remind me if I haven’t replied to make sure I have it. We managed to make it to see Fawlty Towers earlier this month and all enjoyed it – comment from my son was “not sure what’s going on but it’s funny.” Well done to everyone involved, it seemed like a lot of hard work for a two night run but I expect there was also some fun getting as far as the performances. The next village hall event is the 10 year celebration with cocktails and canapés. Cocktails and canapés I can deal with, dressing glamorously may be more of a challenge. Ann Saunders

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS September has again been busy at Stanford Reservoir. My frequency of visits has continued and the list of waders has increased. In addition to the 12 species reported in August the following have been recorded: 1. Curlew sandpiper 2. Wood sandpiper 3. Little ringed plover 4. Knot 5. Grey plover 6. Spotted redshank This takes our autumn tally to 18 different species of wader – a pretty good return! There still continue to be a good number of little egrets often visible from the road bridge – worth a quick look if you have a few minutes. Away from the reservoir large numbers of swallows and martins are gathering to make the long trip to their wintering grounds – a real signal that the autumn and winter seasons are just around the corner. It will be soon be time to start to feed the garden birds (if you haven’t started already). We have already started to see greenfinches and the great spotted woodpecker returning. We have had a nuthatch in the garden on a regular basis – a really great bird if you manage to see it well. Look out for it crawling acrobatically down tree trunks as well as up them (something that you will never see a treecreeper or woodpecker do)! Their habit of wedging a large food item in a crevice and then hacking at it with their strong bills gives this bird its English name. Nuthatch

AND ANOTHER OF THOSE EMAILS Dear milkman ….. I've just had a baby, please leave another one. Please don't leave any more milk. All they do is drink it. Please close the gate behind you because the birds keep pecking the tops off the milk. Sorry not to have paid your bill before, but my wife had a baby and I've been carrying it around in my pocket for weeks. Sorry about yesterday's note. I didn't mean one egg and a dozen pints, but the other way round. Please leave no milk today. When I say today, I mean tomorrow, for I wrote this note yesterday. When you leave my milk please knock on my bedroom window and wake me because I want you to give me a hand to turn the mattress.

Please knock. My TV's broken down and I missed last night's Coronation Street. If you saw it, will you tell me what happened over a cup of tea? From now on please leave two pints every other day and one pint on the days in between, except Wednesdays and Saturdays when I don't want any milk. My back door is open. Please put milk in 'fridge, get money out of cup in drawer and leave change on kitchen table in pence, because we want to play bingo tonight. When you leave the milk please put the coal on the boiler, let dog out and put newspaper inside the screen door. P.S. Don't leave any milk. No milk. Please do not leave milk at No. 14 either as he is dead until further notice.
