Clergy Letter If I have offended you... I’m sorry that this is a bit of an autobiographical article, but I’ve been asked the question it answers by quite a few people, who can skip to the last bit! During November I’ll be spending time in Hampshire as a new little Kennedy enters the world. However, I will be back to be licensed to the Avon Swift Team as Associate Priest by the Archdeacon of Loughborough at 10.30 on Sunday 25th November in our group service in Kimcote. That may seem odd – after all I’ve been around here in one form or another for ages! But now formal licensing is necessary. After Ordination, priests are given a three or four year Curacy to learn about parish management alongside all the other necessary priestly skills. Mine finished two years ago. Did I fail or have to do a re-sit? No! I am a Non Stipendiary Minister – that is a volunteer – and things are slightly different for us. Because I have a job in Prison Chaplaincy, and look after my mother, I’ll be an Associate Priest - not taking full-time responsibility as a Vicar, but continuing to support ministry in various ways. My ministry in Avon Swift began as a Reader, mainly serving in Misterton. During training for Ordination, I thought that I’d be given a Curacy somewhere else, then come back to all of Avon Swift as a Priest. That was not possible – back then the Diocese didn’t have a suitably placed Training Incumbent elsewhere, and asked me if I’d mind coming back here. So I went to serve with dear Jane Curtis at the top of our patch. The rest you probably know – Jane left, Emma came, Ken left, Chris came – I stuck around to be useful over all these changes. I have been offered more time in Prison Chaplaincy, I’ve looked at other Parishes in our Diocese and elsewhere. I always felt, though, that here is where God has called me to be. Now, as things settle after all the team changes, I am finally and officially committing to stay where I love to serve. I’d like to thank you for your support and affirmation through the years of training and preparation, and ask for your prayers and fellowship in the onward journey. When my Muslim colleagues in Chaplaincy go on leave, they send us this message: ‘As I go, I ask your forgiveness for any offence I may have caused you.’ Aware of my many imperfections, I make the same request of you as this subtle change takes place. My prayer this month is for deepening fellowship, kindness and generosity of spirit in our future with each other: Lord God, the source of truth and love, keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, united in prayer and the breaking of bread, and one in joy and simplicity of heart, in Jesus Christ our Lord. MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING We raised £1200, largely due to excellent stalls and some very generous donations. Many people did a little Christmas shopping and the jewellery and driftwood stalls were extremely popular. The local area President, John Gilding, paid us a visit and added to the fun of the day! WINDFARM COMMUNITY FUND MEETING The Parish Council would like to thank everyone who took the time and trouble to attend the Community Fund meeting on the 9th October. Everyone’s comments and participation in the meeting are greatly appreciated Anyone who is interested in sitting on the sub –group which is to be established to evaluate spending proposals and who has not already specifically mentioned it to me can they please let me know. Once we have made further progress with Vattenfall on one or two legal issues the Parish council will formally establish the sub group Ernie Roberts (Ed – see also minutes of meeting just before parish council minutes)
LUNCHEON CLUB On Thursday 18th October 15 members gathered in the Village hall for lunch. The main course, a very tasty Cottage Pie made by Louise Boffey, was followed by an equally tasty Trifle made by Eileen Burd. Tea and a Raffle completed once again a most enjoyable afternoon. The next luncheon will be in the Village Hall on Thursday 22nd November. David Burd

W.I. REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER Eleven members and one visitor heard a very interesting talk from Sue Winstanley of North Kilworth, all about yoga. Sue is a yoga instructor and so inspired us that we are trying to get a class started in the village hall. Look out for further information if you are interested in coming along. YOGA A few ladies in the village are interested in getting together a Yoga class in the New Year, in the Village Hall. It would be on a Wednesday morning for an hour and would be a six-week course initially. The cost of hiring the hall means that we need a minimum number of people. So, if anyone is interested please email me and once we have sufficient numbers we can go ahead and organise something. There is no commitment at this stage but if we get this up and running, the six-week course and contribution for the hall hire will need to be paid up front. The cost will be £25 per person for the 6 week course – maybe slightly more depending on hall hire costs. About the yoga – this will be a tone and relax yoga class, it is designed for all levels of ability. The yoga practice will involve exercises on the floor, sitting and standing postures together with breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques. Please email, or phone 01858 575513. WASoSKs reports from September and October
On Friday 29th September Michael Murphy and staff entertained the WASoSKs at Glebe House. The evening was memorable for many reasons but will be most remembered as we had our first female guest. Mrs. Morley entered into the spirit of the evening and although a little hesitant at the start “….I can’t place that Dalmore smell!” ultimately impressed by being a “girl who swallows” She also challenged the gathered old WASoSKs with her offering. A fiery alcoholic and petroleum bouquet led into a light green throat. This was correctly identified by our top taster as an offering from the Penderyn distillery. This is the first time that we had officially tasted a Welsh whisky and although interesting did not meet universal approval “who bought the foreign p..s” was mumbled by one of our less aware and ruder members who only redeemed himself after being voted the most massive WASoSK by one of the female guests who joined later. Towards the end of the evening our self imposed embargo on new offerings was broken with a rather special bottle Highland Park 25yr old: Broad brandy orange nose mirrored by a viscous orange and almond smoothness with lingering hints of fading glory. Finally we need to ask the advice of the wider readership!! Both on spelling and interpretation of Bejazelled, vejazelled and pejazelled. Friday 26th October at Sideways cottage Jason Timms entertained a small but select group with Stilton and Broccoli soup together with a selection of meats and cheeses. The first really cold evening of the autumn saw 8 of us relaxing and unwinding with a warming dram. It was noted that numbers were a little down on usual, honeymooning and holidays with the family apparently being offered as excuses??!! However it was also noted that we appear to have “lost” a few WASoSKs, could this be due to lack of communication, the pressures of life or insult real or perhaps perceived. New offerings included:
The Balvenie, Caribbean Cask 14yr old The English Whisky Company, chapter 6 (3yr old) Another “foreign” offering from England described as a classic malt A sweet perfume of caramel with a raw alcohol note on the nose with a sweet green molasses note married to a stimulating hot alcohol burn The Balvenie Caribbean Cask had A Rum rich warming note of spicy orange on the nose with a hot spicy burnt marmalade fullness leading to a long smooth and refined finish. The conversation ranged over many topical items both near and far. It was noted that with autumn well and truly on us, we need to think about the forth coming festivals of Halloween, Bonfire night and St Andrews day. Several candidates for the “guy” for the bonfire were mentioned but maybe it should go out to a vote, Candidates for the Guy: Who can fix it?! FUNDRAISING FOR KENYA VOLUNTEER TRIP On the 11th of July next year, I will be heading to the Rift Valley province in Kenya with my college. There I will be volunteering in 3 schools and will be involved in community work. This is an invaluable experience that will be both tough and rewarding but I'm very much looking forward to it. During the next 10 months, I will be holding various fundraising events to help towards the trip so any support or donations would be appreciated and I would be extremely grateful. As part of the fundraising efforts I will be holding two craft fayres – one in South Kilworth on Saturday 20th November at the Village Hall from 1pm to 4pm, and a second in Market Harborough on Saturday 25th November at the 3 Swans Hotel from 11am to 3pm. EDITORIAL Suddenly - it seems - it’s November, it’s colder, it’s darker and soon it will be Christmas, the end of the year and then 2013. Not that I am trying to speed time along but it definitely seems like a downhill rush from here. Bonfire night and, no doubt, a surfeit of fireworks at the weekend is just the start of the autumnal village events. It’s Christmas Child Shoe box time again with boxes to be handed in at the church on Saturday 10th November. Alice Keal’s Christmas Fayre in aid of her trip to Kenya is on the same day. Then there is the Safari Supper – almost guaranteed to be a cold night but with plenty of food and drink to keep people warm. Then it will be December starting with the Church Bazaar and by then another issue of the South Kilworth News.
