Letter from the Editor conne c t wi th m e: I G: @happy _ kappey

Dear Reader, Nine months ago, I made the absolutely terrifying decision to drop what was comfortable- following a pre-determined set of classes + steps to become a doctor- and pursue what was hard- following my love for journalism, art and design. I wasn’t terrified of the infamous “Medill F”, or the coursework, or the professors, or how my inability to write fast would hurt me in an interview, or even the fierce competition that exists within the industry. Rather, It was the idea of a directionless path- a path that held both a dizzying number of incredible opportunities, but also the chance of failurethat terrified me. And, as a perfectionist, I didn’t want to face that chance of failure- until now. Yes, failing at what we love is hard. But the joy that comes with success makes the leap worth it. So, for my first issue, here’s to pursuing what we love, and not what is comfortable.

fashion TREND: temp tattoos A favorite among music-festival attendees and the quirky alike,

the rise of high-quality temporary tattoos for the everyday marks the return of the once-popular accessory slipped into nearly every birthday party goody bag in the 90’s. Thankfully, temporary tattoos today have been entirely repackaged and re-imagined to meet the standards of young twenty-something adults. Designs are durable, safe (throwback to those god-awful rashes that came with applying a temporary tattoo), and feature cheeky, handrawn subjects in gorgeous colors and materials. We were especially taken with this small set of tattoos at a street vendor in Alamo Square Park near Hayes Street in San Francisco. Tropical fruit tattoos never looked so chic- especially for brunch. >>>

TRAVE L London Calling The first time I traveled internationally, it was to London. At the

time, the kitschy appeal of Buckingham Palace, royal guards and high tea at Harrods was exciting enough for little fourteen-year-old me; I snapped my way through the city, documenting my visits to The Tower of London and Big Ben on an archaeic digital camera. Of course, I absolutely recommend visiting and trying all that London has to offer- tourist attractions included. But, rather than revisiting those places upon returning to the city this past summer, I primarily sought after the things that I appreciate today as a college student- fantastic art museums, great food, strong coffee, and, of course, the best boutiques around. And, not to my surprise, London entirely surpassed my expectations in these departments- and then some. Flip the page to discover what I found in the city not only famous for its royalty, but its culture, history and charm. >>>

Flying Smart Skip the booze: Look; we get it. The drinking age is (probably) 18, and it is more

than tempting to order a crisp Chardonnay to celebrate your upcoming vacation on the flight. That being said, alcohol is a diaretic, and you will only exit the plane feeling more dehyrdated. Don’t do it; your body will thank you.

Hydrate: Water is the holy grail of health and wellness for an overnight flight. In

addition to drinking lots of it, apply a plant-based hydrant to the skin before and after that in-flight nap; I recommend Benefit Cosmetics’ Hydra-Concentrated Facial Cream.

Damage control: Overnight flights tax your body and skin. Before getting

some much-needed rest, remove any makeup + brush your teeth. To avoid future problem spots, apply a universal skin salve to anywhere that feels dry. My Smith’s Rosebuld Salve has held up to the test, and is only six dollars for a sizeable tin. Another favorite is Glossier’s Balm Dotcom.

Stay fresh: To hit the refresh button before exiting the plane, spritz a bit of citrus perfume on your pulse points. I love Tom Ford’s Mandarino Di Amalfi Eau de Parfum (pro tip: ask for a free sample bottle at the fragrance counter).
