Brownsville is a neighborhood located in Eastern Brooklyn and is bordered by Bedford-Stuyvesant, East Flatbush, and Canarsie. The neighborhood is home to nearly 60,000 people, and is barely more than one square mile.

Nearly forty percent of who individuals who live in Brownsville live below the poverty line and receive public assistance. More than 54% of children are growing up in households under the poverty line, and less than half of working-age adults have jobs. The neighborhood is dominated by eighteen New York City Housing Authority developments or "projects." Many are named for famous Black Americans, including Langston Hughes and Marcus Garvey. These projects are described as being one big prison, where some describe actual prison as being better and saver than living in Brownsville. The neighborhood has the reputation as being one of the most violent neighborhoods in New York City.
WHERE DEATH ALWAYS COMES AT GUNPOINT AND SCHOOLS ARE ALWAYS SYNONYMOUS WITH FAILURE. These social concerns stem from poverty, high rates of infant mortality, drug abuse, and gang violence. Individuals of the community must fight against the perception that they are doomed and immiserating. Due to their environment individuals lack educational and economic resources to improve their lives.
