ThemotethasnotablyevolvedfromitsoriginsintheMiddleAges.

1.Medievalmotets:Themotetfirstemergedinthethirteenthcenturyas amostlysecularform,likelyasanoffshootofwhatmusichistorianscall theNotreDameschoolofcompositionTheylikelyderivedfromthe clausulasectionofplainchantorganums,anearlyformofacappellavocal polyphony.Medievalsecularmotetswereperformedindifferentlocal languagesoveranisorhythmiccantusfirmus(afixed,preexisting melody)TypicallythecantusfirmuscamefromolderGregorianchants andwassunginLatinNotablemotetcomposersofthisperiodincludethe FrenchPhilippedeVitryandGuillaumedeMachaut.
