President’s Awards The President’s Award recognizes the efforts of a Service Unit team or program delivery team in moving an area or audience toward achievement of the Council’s goals during a fiscal or membership year. Global Action Team Barb Christensen, Siobhan Hickey, Patti Larson, Lisa Hinshaw, Christine Reisch, Heidi Duerr, Addy Lerner, Suhani Pavani, Natali Cano, Shayda Roshdieh, Sabine Lerner The Global Action Team is a group of dedicated volunteers who believe strongly in presenting programming, travel, and information to both leaders and girls throughout Orange County to give them a deeper understanding and view of their place in the world. This year, the Global Action Team created a greater sense of girl focus by adding in two girl committee members. This addition to the team allows girls’ perspectives and voices to the programming and activities being presented. The Global Action Team has worked to adapt programming at the national level to fit the needs in Orange County by infusing a global perspective into the programs. This year with the pandemic, the Global Action Team worked to adapt the Golden Gate Bridging to a virtual celebration. The team also moved the Democracy series, and discussions during the election and inauguration, to a virtual platform. Additionally, the Global Action Team partnered with girls and leaders from Guyana as part of the 2020 Global Roundtable. Through this partnership, they created a session for Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, so they could ask the Girl Guides about scouting in their country.
Tustana & Tustin East Holiday Bazaar Committee Kelly Black, Cynthia Tyler, Angela Barker, Addy Lerner, Holly Maddox, Sharon King, Fran Hagland, Trisha Gable The Tustana & Tustin East Holiday Bazaar Committee continued the tradition of the Holiday Bazaar event for their troops, which teaches girls money management and budgeting. This year the volunteer team worked endlessly to pivot this in-person event into a virtual one. The Committee worked tirelessly to give troop leaders timely communication via their website, flyers, instructional videos and live Zoom meetings on how the event will work. In addition, there was a shopper’s catalog, online shopping website, and invoicing for girls and leaders to manage orders. The Committee also collected and distributed all of the purchased items, which required contactless drop-off and pick-up. There were over 2,000 items sold during the one-week online sales event. It was the work of the Tustana & Tustin East Holiday Bazaar Committee that made the transition of this event into a virtual event appear seamless.

Appreciation Pins The Appreciation Pin honors those whose service has been outstanding, over and above the expectations of the position held, and who have had a significant impact on at least one geographic area of the council (service unit or region). Derek Ige SU104 - Anaheim Derek’s main focus as a volunteer is the work he does as a robotics volunteer. He likes to make sure the girls have the best possible educational and leadership experience with robotics, and he strives to educate fellow coaches on how to encourage girls in a girl-led atmosphere. This year when pandemic related restrictions prevented the robotics teams from practicing in person, Derek came up with a solution for an effective practice table barrier that was approved by Girl Scouts of Orange County, which allowed pairs of girls to practice at the table while still adhering to GSOC safety guidelines. Derek has made a significant impact on all five of GSOC’s robotic teams, especially the three new teams, all while creating a sustainable structure. Elizabeth Cronin SU603 – Rancho Portola Elizabeth has worked wonders in fostering a love of nature and the outdoors for girls and leaders in her two troops and the Rancho Portola Service Unit. She has brought her passion for the outdoors by being a member of the planning committee for the Service Unit campout. Elizabeth was in the process of planning the Service Unitwide Skills Day when the pandemic hit, and she re-tooled the event to run virtually on Zoom. She kept this event girl-led and worked with her troops to create this event virtually. In addition, Elizabeth has been a coach, mentor, leader and advocate for all Girl Scouts and volunteers she serves. She has been a member of the Service Unit team for many years and has added value to each volunteer position she has taken on and set it up for success when she moved to another position. Jami Andrews SU504 – Laguna Beach Jami is girl-focused and ensures the girls in Laguna Beach have a fun and meaningful experience, so they stay engaged in Girl Scouts. She mentors leaders to run fun events and offers her expertise in Girl Scouts and events to allow the girls to enjoy new events with fun themes. Jami also promotes Girl Scouting in Laguna Beach and has increased membership by helping to form new troops. During the pandemic, Jami connected with each troop in the Laguna Beach Service Unit to make sure they knew how to use Zoom to keep the girls active while unable to meet in person. She took the time to work with troops who needed help to ensure their troops could continue to be active.
9
Kellie Almy SU503 – North Irvine Kellie is a mentor to girls at every Girl Scout level in the Service Unit and helps create girl leadership. Throughout the years, Kellie has been responsible for helping to organize many girl-led events for the Service Unit, including several virtual events throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She is the Event Chair for the Irvine-wide World Thinking Day event and this year she designed the entire event to be virtual and engaged Girl Scouts at every level. In addition to the World Thinking Day event, Kellie also hosted a virtual holiday event for the Service Unit, and a “bring a friend” virtual family scavenger hunt. She worked hard to keep the Service Unit alive and well during this challenging time! Laura Wong SU304 – Ocean View Laura is an integral part of the Service Unit Team and provides assistance wherever needed. She helps run Cookie Rookie and Nutty Newbie sessions and mentors all troops in the Service Unit with the product programs. Laura makes sure new Troop Leaders have their questions answered and are comfortable in their new roles. She took on the responsibility of Product Coordinator for Juliette Girl Scouts for both the North and Central regions. Laura has taken the vast knowledge of this position to ensure Juliettes from all over Orange County can participate in the product programs. This year, with the pandemic, Laura took new ideas and created a virtual cookie booth lottery. She did this not only for the Service Unit, but also for both regions for the Juliette Girl Scouts. Leeora Beck SU606 - Oso Valley Leeora has continued to volunteer for the Oso Valley Service Unit for many years even after her daughters graduated. She continues to lead the Senior/Ambassador troop Tempest and create a girl-led atmosphere for the girls in the troop. Leeora, along with leadership from surrounding Service Units, guides older Girl Scouts in organizing and executing an International Day event annually. With the money earned from this event, she ensures that graduating Girl Scouts may continue their leadership experiences with the opportunity to earn college scholarships. Leeora is a committed volunteer and proactively engages volunteers to continue with Girl Scouting. She is a true Girl Scout and asset to the Oso Valley Service Unit.
Lisa Demchik SU507 – San Clemente Lisa worked during the pandemic to pivot the San Clemente Service Unit by immediately implementing virtual Service Unit meetings. Lisa encouraged the troops in the Service Unit to utilize Zoom and encouraged them to convert their events to virtual during the pandemic. She is a great communicator and uses an array of resources to get information to the Service Unit leaders and volunteers including a Shutterfly website, Facebook page and email updates. Lisa brings her energy and compassion to the Service Unit and team meetings. The Service Unit covers the military families from Camp Pendleton and Lisa offers support to troops when Troop Leaders need to leave due to unexpected deployments. She works to merge troops or help find new troop leaders. Lisa Mills SU606 – Oso Valley Lisa has adapted to the “new normal” this year by providing information about virtual activities for the girls and families in the Service Unit, so they could continue with Girl Scouting during the pandemic. She continued to communicate and connect the service unit with opportunities virtually and encouraged girls and families to participate, even if their troops were not meeting virtually. Lisa used the time during the pandemic to find innovative Girl Scout program options far and wide and shared the resources with the girls and families in the service unit.
Marie Whitcomb SU604 – Mission Viejo Marie is a long-time volunteer and an integral part of the Mission Viejo Service Unit Team. She holds a variety of team positions and has been one of our most dependable and go-to volunteers. Marie has been a mentor for new troops and a dependable resource for new leaders to turn to with questions. Marie stayed with the Mission Viejo Service Unit team, even after her daughter graduated, as the cookie manager and trainer for new leaders until the pandemic. Marie has helped to plan many events for the service unit from the Fall Festival to Mother/Daughter Spa days and the PJ Party. If there is a need, Marie is there. She is a dedicated volunteer and continues to volunteer to ensure a smooth transition for her positions. Misty Cross SU303 – Huntington Harbor Misty always strives to follow the Girl Scout Promise and Law and takes all Girl Scout safety rules and program guidelines to heart when planning with girls. She has been a treasured and invaluable team member in the Huntington Harbor Service Unit for many years. Misty immersed herself in the Girl Scout product program, volunteered for the Service Unit Team roles and took it upon herself to learn everything she could about the program to help and share with other volunteers. Misty is also a great resource! When she and her daughter, Grace, travel to Girl Scout locations all over the world, Misty creates and makes presentations at Service Unit meetings. She has worked with her troop on several Take Action projects and is working with Olive Crest and their families in need. In addition, Misty’s enthusiasm for Girl Scouts is catchy and she is a very dedicated volunteer.

Honor Pins The Honor Pin recognizes volunteers who have given exceptional service above and beyond the expectations of their positions and whose efforts have had an impact in two or more geographic areas of the council.
Christine Polito SU305 – HB Pierside
Jessica Castillo SU304 – Ocean View
Chrysti has adapted the Girl Scout program and activities to meet the needs of the girls with different abilities in her two troops, while encouraging them to become independent and confident. She has attended, with GSOC staff, the The Austim Community in Action Conference to help engage with girls and help educate how to work with this community of girls. Chrysti also used her expertise to present a workshop at the 2020 Volunteer Conference about all-inclusive troops and how to integrate girls with disabilities into troops. She is part of the Vol Con Squad and presented many other workshops virtually. Chrysti is a Council trainer for many levels and takes on trainings at any given moment to educate volunteers about Girl Scouts, so they are able to run a successful program. In addition, Chrysti holds multiple Service Unit volunteer roles and is in constant communication with all leaders in her Service Unit. She has developed social media platforms to relay communication, has a wide range of knowledge in the virtual world and was able to immediately put Service Unit meetings, trainings and events on virtually when the pandemic shut things down.
Jessica has a focus on all girls in the service unit and develops and promotes girl programs for all levels that give leaders the tools for them to be successful. Jessica is a passionate volunteer who became a quick advocate for the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) learning all the ins and outs of the system and has helped create a training to offer to volunteers to educate them on the VTK. Jessica also developed a Tips and Tricks resource on the VTK that helps leaders in a moment when they have a question. During the pandemic, Jessica was quick to develop Google Classrooms for all Girl Scout levels, which have quite a volume of Girl Scout programs and activities leaders can access. She continues to share these documents at Service Unit meetings and attends other Service Unit meetings to encourage virtual activities with their girls. Jessica developed Girl Scout events open to all service units such as the Step Out with Suffragists family event and World Thinking Day, which were both successful virtual events. Jessica also volunteers as part of the Vol Con Squad, helps plan and present numerous workshops and the well-attended SUMmer Series just for GSOC Service Unit Managers.
Jeff Winston Board of Directors Jeff is passionate about raising up girls to have a voice in the world whether it is personally, professionally and equally as demonstrated through his service on Girl Scouts of Orange County’s Board of Directors. His personal giving, and his dedicated efforts to the mission are evident while he serves in a governance role. Jeff sits on the Finance Committee and Fund Development Committee, and he is open to hearing diverse options in order to make the best decisions in moving forward for the best outcome for GSOC. Mary Shipma SU603 – Rancho Portola Mary is a long-time volunteer who coaches and mentors girls to help them reach their goals and advocate for their projects. She was easily able to covert to an online platform when the stay-at-home order went into effect due to the pandemic and was helpful in coaching others into the virtual world. Mary is an integral part of the Rancho Portola Service Unit Team, and, through the years, she has held a variety of volunteer positions. Mary is a founding member of Oasis (Outstanding Activities for Sisters in Scouting) which is a supplemental program for girls Cadette through Ambassador levels in the Rancho Portola Service Unit. This group allows individual girls from the older girl troops to gather and do activities together outside their regular troop setting. Mary is a member of the GSOC Membership Advisory Committee along with staff, and researches and suggests ways in which all service units can gain interest and new girls in Girl Scouting. She is also on GSOC’s Fund Development team helping with annual giving and events by participating in the Imagination Workshop to brainstorm ideas to replace the annual Celebrate Leadership Event.
