What to Expect

Here are the 4 steps that you’ll go through during your Senior Portrait process.

1 Scheduling Your Shoot

Scheduling your shoot is the easy part of this process. Picking a date that works best for you is simple. Senior Portrait season with Emily Martin Photography runs from June 1st, 2017 through October 31st, 2017. The sunniest shoots will be between the months of July and September.

2 Choosing Your Outfit and Location

Chosing a location always seems like the easy part, but your location dictates how your shoot feels as a whole. 5 different “feels” are laid out in the Choosing Location Guide on Page 3. Along with chosing your location, you want to look nice for these special photos. The do’s and don’t’s of what to wear are laid out in the What to Wear guide on Pages 4-5.

3 Shoot Day

The number of photos taken, along with wardrobe changes, will affect the length of the photo shoot. Plan on arriving at the location 15-20 minutes ealy and allow for the shoot to run longer than initially agreed on. Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking a lot during the shoot. Bring a water bottle and anthing else you might need to feel comfortable.

4 After the Shoot

Within 2 weeks after your shoot, the unedited photos will be processed. A meeting will be set up to see your photos and choose which photos you want to put in your senior portfolio. The portfolio photos will be edited for sun spots, bringing up shadows, etc. The edited photos will be ready within another 2 weeks.

Choosing a Location

HAVING TROUBLE FINDING THE RIGHT PLACE TO TAKE YOUR SENIOR PORTRAITS? FIND WHAT LOOK YOU WANT AND HOPEFULLY THESE SUGGESTIONS WILL HELP SPARK YOUR INTEREST.

Do you want a NATURAL feel?

LOCAL PARKS AND NATURAL SPOTS Try to find a park that you love or a hike that you enjoy that has a lot of different spots for potential photos. Rocks to sit on or trees to lean against are perfect for natural photos.

Do you want a RUSTIC feel?

FIELDS AND OLD BUILDINGS Rustic photo doesn’t necessarily mean a country style photo. Finding an abandoned building in downtown Portland can be just as rustic as an old barn in the middle of nowhere. Fields are an easy way to capture this look.

Do you want an URBAN feel?

CITY BUILDINGS AND DOWNTOWN FInding a cool building isn’t difficult, so try finding a block or two that has a cool vibe that you like. Want a graffiti theme? Cool building siding? Maybe you can find a place that has nature and city combined into one area.

Do you want a CASUAL feel?

PARK AND WATER SCENE Parks are just about as casual as it gets. So is water, which isn’t hard to come by in Oregon. Finding a park that also has water is especially casual, and it lets you have more options for variety in photos.

Do you want a BUSINESS feel?

PLAIN SURROUNDINGS AND MINIMAL DISTRACTIONS Having minimal distractions (less cars, people, graffiti, etc.) to make the background clean, neat and precise. Standing by a brick building or a green field can make the shot look more professional.

Other things to consider: • • • •

Have areas of shade: direct sunlight is not flattering in portraits. Avoid a crowded place so there aren’t random people in the background. Make sure it’s practical: are you allowed to take photos there? Do you like it for you, not what the “norm” is for senior portraits?

What to Wear

Chosing the right outfit can dramatically change your photos. Using this guide can help you to figure out what the right outfit is for you, and can relieve some of that “perfect outfit” stress, while feeling good about how you look in your photos!

Colors

You don’t want to clash colors throughout your photos. To avoid that: • Avoid wearing a color that looks bad with the overall background of your photos (grass=green back ground, water=blue background, field=green/yellow background) • Avoid wearing red with a green background, black with a yellow background, and any other drastic differences like that. It’s hard to focus on you when there’s such a harsh contrast. • Do wear muted colors to avoid the clash of a vibrant color with a non-vibrant background.

Patterns

Patterns should usually be avoided because it’s hard to focus on the overall photo. Patterns tend to make photos look very flat and not as beautiful as they could be.

Jewelry

Keep jewelry simple; minimalistic is more flattering. This includes ties, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. • Avoid wearing big pendants on necklaces or earrings that distract from your face. • Avoid wearing a super-busy tie that will be more of a distraction from the picture. Do wear a muted color tie to avoid the clash of a vibrant color with a non-vibrant background. • Avoid wearing jewlery that is too big or too small on you; that will get in the way more than add to the photos.

What to Wear

Shirts

Wearing a shirt that you love is an awesome thing for good photos, but the shirt should also be comfortable and work well for your style of shoot. • Avoid wearing a shirt that you constantly have to pull up or down to make it fit comfortably. • Avoid wearing a shirt that is too small or too big for you to the point that it’s awkward or uncomfortable for you. • Do wear a shirt that you can move around in, to allow you to move from pose to pose coomfortably. • Do wear a shirt that can work with different accessories.

Pants/Dresses

Comfort is the key to a good shoot. A few ways to pick the right dress are: • Making sure you can move around without help getting up or down. • Making sure the dress isn’t too short or long for your comfort zone. A few ways to pick the right pants are: • Making sure you can move around without help getting up or down. • Making sure your pants can match with multiple shirts to allow for easy outfit changes.

Footwear

Shoes aren’t always visible in photos, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t important. • Avoid wearing new shoes that you haven’t broken in yet. The shoot will consist of lots of walking around, so you don’t want your feet to hurt. • Avoid wearing very high heels that are hard to walk in. • Do wear muted colors to avoid the clash of a vibrant color with a non-vibrant background. • Do wear shoes that make you feel good and that you feel confident in. Confidence will show in your photos!
