Internship Objective

To understand and complete the appropriate tasks required of the various design phases of a project.

Solution

During a semester-long internship, I collaborated with two other team members on a lobby repositioning project located at 500 Boylston Street. For this project, I assisted with design options, conducted material research, formatted client presentations, and worked within the construction document set. In addition, I attended client meetings, coordinated visits with product representatives, and selected finishes for material palettes.

Reception & Lobby Rendering

Floor Plan

Outcome I contributed to the conceptual design, schematic design, and design development phases within this high-end hospitality inspired project.

My experience with Payette Associates provided me with a thorough understanding of how materials play a significant role within the built environment. In addition, I learned how to properly indicate where and how a material is utilized within the space through furniture tagging, furniture plans, and specification sheets.

Medley Family Center

Objective

To thoroughly research and investigate the key points of contention surrounding divorce and remarriage within the United States. After determining issues, provide a design solution through design theories, skills, and methodologies. User needs, accessible design, and anthropometrics are to be incorporated within the design of this multi-use space.

Solution

Play and educational programs implemented within a family community center will encourage healthy relationship building for families of divorce and remarriage. An investigation of the developmental stages of play and types of play will provide the foundation of embedded play experiences. To ensure a positive atmosphere that fosters appropriate behavior, a strength-based approach is taken through the empowerment model. Attachment theory and place attachment introduce a comforting sense of community within Medley. Lastly, color theory and the material selection evoke an appropriate design language for a sophisticated space utilized by parents and children alike.

Thesis Statement Medley is a community center for families of divorce and remarriage. The design of the center incorporates play and education programs as an alternative solution to common issues that these user groups face. The education programs provide logical insight on the family’s given circumstance, while play ensures a positive distraction and opportunity to explore life skills naturally. The community center features playful and interactive design elements to ensure a sense of community, an engaging experience, and a means of bonding.

Concept: A Single Thread I look around and find that we are all connected. A single thread represents the family; regardless of their relationship, they will forever be connected. The black portion of the thread represents the darkness one might feel when experiencing family transitions such as divorce or remarriage. The concept model becomes active, engaging, and playful when color is later incorporated within the single thread. Although some individuals might feel a disconnect during family changes (represented by the white areas of the thread), they will forever be apart of one common identity; family.

Equality Restaurant Awards & Recognition

Da Vinci’s Humanism Student Invitational

Objective

With a partner, design a bar and restaurant in Florence, Italy using the metric system that focuses on custom lighting, material selection, and way-finding through research based design.

Solution

For the Bar Restaurant design, an eclectic mix of materials and furniture mesh together to create an energetic, youthful experience. Representing human diversity, various design styles are incorporated. In this group project, specific tasks were assigned to my partner and me. I space planned the general dining and bar area, with a consideration to varied seating options for guests. In addition, I designed the floor pattern that also acts as a major way-finding element throughout the space. My partner and I collaborated in material selections and designing custom light fixtures. All renderings and work presented for this project were completed by me.

Concept

The idea of equality is derived from the overarching theme of Humanism. When analyzing the unique qualities that build up the Humanism movement, there is the tone of harmony that underlies the philosophical stance. Further abstracting this idea of harmony among the Humanism values, equality is found.

Habitat Health Objective

To designing a new, state-of-the-art building that is supported by evidence-based research for healthcare. The interior environment should foster opportunities for healing, reflection, independence, and a meaningful quality of life for all of its users. Clients request a design that is innovative, sustainable, and promotes a sense of community.

Solution

Preliminary research, case studies, and field work was conducted to fully understand how to appropriately design for a healthcare setting. To effectively design, careful consideration was ensured toward the needs of all user groups. A clear understanding of the programming and adjacencies were necessary during space planning. Finally, theories of environmental psychology were incorporated to ensure an atmosphere that promotes healing and a sense of community.

Concept

A lush evergreen forest is a protective environment that is a place of respite. When standing beneath the evergreen tree, one experiences an intimate and rooted connection with nature. Unknowingly, this interaction improves the individual’s physical and mental wellbeing. The concept of an evergreen was incorporated within Habitat Health to sustain nature and improve an individual’s health. Elements of biomimicry and green design abstractly implement the concept, while natural views and a healing garden precisely represent it.
