Hello everyone! My name is Roseanne Crawford and I am the Director of Pricing & Rating. Pricing quotes and contract lanes for new & current customers. Rating maintains those awarded rates in our system. I have a great team of 3 hardworking ladies (Becca Hess, Caroline White & Veronica Flores) that enable me to accomplish my goals. Without them, I would just be another crazy person! I was born and raised in Las Cruces. I am the second oldest of 5 children. I am the favorite child, don’t let my siblings tell you any different! My dad worked at WSMR for 35 yrs. and my mother stayed home to raise us kids. She was the cook, housekeeper, bus driver, and referee all in one. I have a very large extended family as well and joke that I am related to half of Las Cruces! My introduction to the trucking world was at the ripe old age of 17 as a high school senior working at the Pilot Truck stop in Las Cruces. You would think that would have scared me off but it didn’t, I liked the challenge. In July 1996, I started working at MVT. We say 1996 was a good year, there are still several of us 96’ers that still work for MVT today. I started out auditing logs, moved over to the reception desk during the days of the round table, planning whiteboard and a manual switchboard that would scare most people off! I did a stint in Payroll for a while and then finally found my calling in Pricing & Rating about 15 years ago, and have been doing that ever since. My wonderful husband Danny and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary. God blessed us with 3 boys, Danny Jr. (Freshman at NMSU), Nathan (9th grade) and Aaron (7th Grade). I live in a house full of comedians, they are constantly playing practical jokes…mostly on me because I’m outnumbered. Don’t worry, I hold my own.

We love to spend time together camping, ATV riding, and target shooting. All 3 of my boys compete in Shooting Sports (Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol, Muzzleloader, and Archery) with my husband as their coach. They’ve traveled across the state and even the country to compete. Warning: Here is where the bragging starts but I can’t help it, they make their momma proud. This past summer my eldest Danny Jr. qualified to compete at the National level for 4H in Nebraska. He went on to win, becoming the National 4-H Muzzleloader Champion (think Davy Crocket style). Nathan is the State Pistol Champion, but he was only 13 yrs. old at the time and could not compete nationally. He is looking forward to competing next year and hopefully qualifying for Nationals. Aaron is a competitive gymnast and placed 3rd in the State overall and 1st in Rings. He qualified to compete at Regionals in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center this last April. He even saw some of the USA Men’s Olympic team hanging around the gym. His goal is to one day compete in the Olympics. They all keep me very busy, I am so blessed to be their mom and I love my little men. Working at MVT has been a crazy roller coaster with many highs, lows, slowdowns, and fast forwards. Few people can say they started their career with a small hometown company and watch it grow into a large nationally known company that is a leader in energy efficient technology. It has been an amazing journey and I am grateful to be a part of it.

Sincerely, Roseanne Crawford

The feeding frenzy was on! No sooner had the email from Jackie popped up on my monitor, when cubicle city suddenly became a ghost town as its residents converged upon Jackie’s office. Jackie’s email had notified us that the MVT store was in her office and open for business, and it was on! Lizeth had arrived, bringing with her an assortment of MVT branded shirts and jackets. This shopping spree was one to rival Black Friday! I meandered on in behind everyone in hopes of picking up another couple of MVT shirts, or maybe a ball cap to add to my collection of ball caps. Although Jackie’s email had arrived scant seconds ago, I was too late. I was outnumbered 100 to 1… or so it surely seemed, and I stood by anxiously waiting for a chance to get a look at the latest offerings. On this particular day I was out of luck. Nothing for me, but it was all good because a few days before, I had ordered some shirts from Lizeth, which she had sent with the courier. I had scored the coolest MVT shirt ever in that bundle. If MVT had a football team, this shirt would be our team jersey. Rabid fans across the land would be rocking the team colors! As I stood there that day, waiting my turn to check out the merchandise, it occurred to me once more what an awesome idea this was. Making MVT branded clothing available for employees to purchase. I had also been informed by Lizeth a few days before, that the MVT store web site was currently under construction, and should be up and running very soon. I have been buying products from the MVT store for several years now. Mostly ball caps, I have a tendency toward hoarding caps, but I have purchased several other items as well. I’ve often wondered why the MVT store did not have an on line presence. So there you have it, great minds think alike! I personally cannot wait for a “Body By MVT Grill” t-shirt with a photo of Jaime’s delicious menudo on the front! Which brings me to the reason for this article, the branding of MVT. The definition of branding is as follows; Branding is the process of creating distinctive and durable perceptions in the minds of consumers. A brand is a persistent, unique business identity intertwined with associations of personality, quality, origin, liking and more.

Long before the onset of the internet, and this world turned into the tuned in, turned on, clicking, tapping, swiping, ultra-modern world in which we now live in. Businesses and advertisers had already discovered that human beings are highly visual animals, and that the packaging most often sold the product. Not only did it sell the product, but as packaging got more sophisticated and eye catching, it created brand recognition and loyalty. If you walk into any grocery store, you will see that even the generic brands now tend to package their products to resemble their name brand counterpart. At MVT our collective mission is to foster, promote, and maintain brand loyalty. We must start from within, and believe in this thing that we do, and then project it outward to our respective communities. You can go online, or pick up and read any of the trucking industry periodicals and if you read enough statistics, you might begin to wonder how any of us still have a job. The numbers are staggering, and the amount of annual trucking company failures pretty much outnumbers most any other industry. You can break down the many varied reasons as to why trucking companies fail, but the common denominator comes down to the cost of doing business. There are many contributing factors, but this is the biggie, and when you and I think about this, we generally tend to think in terms of equipment, fuel, maintenance, and keeping truck drivers paid and rolling, and paying the bills to keep the lights on. Keeping a trucking company going is one thing. Making it truly successful requires constant innovation, forward thinking, and diversification. All of which our MVT leadership has totally got it going on. The rest of us need to do our part. There is so much more to the cost of doing business than this, but the one factor we as staff personnel tend to omit from the equation is ourselves. We are a large part of the cost of doing business, but we possess the ability to assist in offsetting this cost. We do this first of all by giving our all while we are on the clock, and secondly by going beyond the confines of our cubicles and branding MVT. As we go about our daily lives out in the community, we run across people from various walks of life. Many of them on their way to or from work and we notice them in their various work uniforms; there’s a Wal-Mart person, a city worker, plumbers, Pep Boys, Home Depot, McDonald’s, the list goes on. We see shirts, tops, smocks, hats, caps, helmets and all types of vehicles and equipment emblazoned with the logos, emblems, and decals of their particular company/professional affiliation. We notice these and take them in stride, but we immediately recognize who they work for by their branding and we subconsciously acknowledge them.

I wear my MVT ball caps and t-shirts occasionally on weekends (and really need to do so more often), and when I do, I am often approached and asked about MVT. Some out of curiosity, some out of familiarity because they recognize the brand and gives them something to talk about with a total stranger, and then of course those seeking more information about who we are. This is branding! We should all be thinking about this with regard to our employer. Brand recognition is big. It attracts the consumer to the product, and sells the product. Out there on the open road, truck drivers know MVT, just as they know Swift, Schneider, et, al. Truck drivers are constantly in search of the next best trucking company, and the MVT branding on our trucks and trailers causes non-MVT drivers to think about giving us a look. Branding MVT out on the highway is a no brainer, our trucks, trailers, and drivers do that for us. We need to expand it by doing our part to brand MVT in our daily lives. My wife Carrie and I are big time road trippers, and being that our children are grown and on their own, we hit the road whenever the urge hits. We don’t need to be on vacation, any Saturday and Sunday will do just fine. We jump in the car and hit the highway bound for nowhere in particular. I drive and make guy noises as I rock out to anything from Led Zeppelin to George Jones, and everything in between via the magic of satellite radio, while she reads her romance novels with the hunky guys on the cover.

When I started out in this industry I was with another trucking company prior to joining MVT, and I knew of MVT because I had worked with someone who had come from MVT. Whenever Carrie and I were out road tripping we saw MVT trucks were few and far between. I have now been in trucking all told going on 20 years, and these days it does not matter which direction our travels take us, MVT is everywhere! Our vagabond daughter, with two college degrees, who decided to traverse the country in her RV, would constantly tell of MVT trucks she ran across in her travels. She is now on the verge of settling down and getting married (remains to be seen) in Oregon, and she has a trucker neighbor who drives for MVT! I tell her it is because (paraphrasing ZZ Topp), “we’re bad, we’re nationwide!”

A quick personal anecdote now, which resulted from rocking my MVT gear; a while back I was wearing my ELOGS expert shirt from back in the day when we took the ELOGS classes. So I’m in the grocery store when this fellow approaches me and says, “so tell me how.” If you will recall, and also for those new to MVT, the ELOGS shirt depicts the words “ELOGS Expert, Ask Me How.” Well I was sweating bullets right about then, but I was not about to back down, I had to represent! So I gave him a run-down of who we (MVT) are, and he replied, “yes I know MVT, go on.” So to quote the great Charlie Daniels from his Uneasy Rider song, “I laid it on thicker and heavier as I went.” When I was done, he thanked me and shook my hand, and he told me that he worked in operations for a trucking company (I forget which one at the moment), and then he said the coolest thing before he walked away. “I guess we need to watch out for MVT.” A few seconds later I was like the quintessential teenage boy who thinks of all the cool things he should have said after the girl has done walked away, but at that moment in time, my suddenly turned Neanderthal brain could only muster up, “yeah mofo, ya got that right, watch out for MVT!” I kept this to myself of course, and like I said, afterward I thought of more appropriately eloquent things I might have come back with to his parting remark. I was inspired to write this article as mentioned earlier, while shopping for MVT branded clothing in Jackie’s office, but it goes far beyond just that. It is a grass roots sentiment I wanted to share with everyone. MVT is ours. She is home grown, and nationwide, and that in itself is something to be proud of. We must protect and nurture her. It would be truly wonderful if in 20, 30, 40 years and beyond, our grandchildren and great grandchildren are working for MVT and a legacy of generations of “MVT’ers” existed as in the oldest industries of America, where folks from multiple generations sit around the dinner table discussing the latest goings-on at “the old place!”

Book of the Month Being human gives us the excuse to be afraid of our own dreams. To doubt your own instincts and pull your hair out deciding whether to follow your heart or thinking with your brain. It allows us to have cushion in the process of finding our meaning in life.

The

Corner There’s something cool brewing in Las Cruces. Border Brew Coffee House is quickly becoming a true ‘Las Cruces Hidden Gem.’ If you’ve paid us a visit, you know that we not only have the best coffee in town, but we also have a great ‘Build Your Own’ sandwich menu to make sure that you always get exactly what you want. We’ve got one of a kind drinks and the only place in Southern New Mexico with *cue the ironic Hipster Music* Nitro Brew. “a COFFEE a day keeps the GRUMPY away”

The Alchemist is a well written story about a young shepherd boy facing obstacles readers could expect along his journey in finding his “Personal Legend”, as Coelho calls it. Coelho pinpoints four main obstacles that we as people face in our lives. The first is love, and how you must not give up on your own “Personal Legend” in the mist of loving someone else. Second, difficulty accepting the simple fact of being selfish and you must be okay with putting yourself first when trying to reach personal or life goals. Third, discouragement and being afraid. I like to describe this obstacle as mind over matter. Sometimes the thought of failure is scarier than actual failure.

And finally we reach the last obstacle, guilt. Coelho writes it very well, “when you have achieved your goal we tend to deny or hide our success because we become embarrassed once we look around and notice that not everyone around us has achieved as much as we have.” Personally, this book has helped me through a lot of periods in my life. Quote me when I say, you will be a better person after reading this. The author did an amazing job in turning life lessons into such an easy read. Enjoy!

Once the baristas arrived they swiftly set up their tables, unloaded their freshly brewed coffee, and they were in business! They brought a selection of their hot coffees, every flavor of Italian soda you could think of, and their famous Nitro Brew.

PET-O-BERFEST It was a crisp October morning before the temperature climbed into the high 80s. Vendors were tripping over dog leashes and booths were being set up. Only one thing was missing, the warm smell of coffee in the air. But don’t worry Border Brew was on its way. BORDER BREW

NEWS

The Baristas of Border Brew had a blast meeting new people, telling them all about how awesome their coffee shop is, and of course loving on all their furry four-legged customer!

PET FRIENDLY Did you know Border Brew is pet friendly? Customers are more than welcome to bring their furry babies into the coffee shop! The Baristas will even prepare them a Bow-ista Bowl treat.

“Great BBQ sandwich, I have also tried their roast beef sandwich and it was also great, nice atmosphere & friendly service. I will definitely be back.” -Wesley Wolf “I really like the changes that have been made recently. The art is a welcomed touch.” -Hannah Sanders

Letter from the Editor We are officially in my favorite time of the year, and we are having a busy few months in the Marketing Department! We are working on food drives, clothing drives, toy drives, Thanksgiving luncheons, and of course the famous MVT Christmas Parties! I hope to run into you at one of these events, and if I don’t I’ll see you in 2017! I can’t believe that this year is already coming to an end. I know we say it a lot but ‘where does the time ago?’ It’s amazing to me how no matter what we are doing the clock continues to tick and the time continues to pass and before we know it a year is over! I hope everyone had a great 2016 and is ready for an even better new year! I am looking forward making and hopefully keeping my New Year’s Resolutions, and to starting the next chapter of my life after I graduate this December from New Mexico State University.

Happy Holidays! UPDATE: Emily Roof welcomed her beautiful baby girl, Mackenzie, on November 5th! I was lucky enough to meet Mackenzie the day after she was born and she was a solid 7 pounds 9.5 ounces of absolute cuteness! Enjoy the holidays. Enjoy your family time. Enjoy the little things.
