Acknowledge I would like to thank my parents and family for always supporting me in all that I do; nothing would be possible without the dedication and love given by each of you. I would also like to thank my teachers for pushing me to do my best and encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone this year. I can tell that I have grown as a student this year, and I owe a lot of that to the teachers that have been so thorough and dedicated to my education.

Biography Born on March 9, 1999, my parents named me Emily Suzanne Sutton. Not only did I share my middle name with my mother, but I also shared my birthday with her father, my grandfather. Since then I have lived in the same house, in the same town: Newton Grove, North Carolina. My childhood was pretty normal; I played games with my little sister, went to the pool in the summer, and overall just enjoyed life as a child with no worries. My parents have always been very supportive of my sister and I, as they worked to give us everything we needed.
As I grew older, not much changed. Living in a small town had its perks: my friends were basically handed to me, I knew all of my teachers personally, and everywhere I went in town I was greeted by a familiar face. When I entered high school, however, the small town life began to haunt me.The summer before 10th grade my parents decided to divorce, which gave those familiar faces something to talk about. There were manyoccasions around town when I would hear things about my family that I didn’t even know. By the time I had reached my senior year, I was beyond ready to move on from Newton Grove. Attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had always
been a dream of mine. My father had gone to school there, so I grew up attending many events on the campus. I very distinctly remember the day I received my acceptance notification. I was sitting on an activity bus in the Cook Out parking lot; I cheered in high school, and we were on the way to a basketball game. Everyone on the bus, cheerleaders and basketball players, all cheered together as my letter finally loaded on my phone. For someone from my area to attend UNC was very rare, so it was almost like everyone was excited for my experience. I have now been at UNC for two years, and I have enjoyed every second of it. Being at a school with so much diversity has been an awesome experience for me; it has allowed me to learn a lot about the world outside of rural eastern North Carolina. Learning has always been something I have enjoyed, and the classes at Carolina have all pushed me in ways a Sampson County education never did. Although I could not wait to get out of my small town, my experience in Chapel Hill has helped me appreciate small-town life in a way that I could not grasp until I was no longer there. Every experience in life is valuable in some way, even if you do not realize it in the moment.

Typography Composition
9 Project one for MEJO 182 was meant to educate students on typography, while also assisting in the development of the skills necessary to provide information in an easy to read, yet appealing, format. Students were given five different type foundries to choose from; I chose Storm Type as my focus. Each composition worked as an advertisement for the foundry, providing information like the creator’s name, the year it was created, and more on the chosen type foundry. The project allowed for the use of only typography and graphics, so each item in my composition was created without using any actual images. Since I used Storm Type, I chose to give my composition a “stormy” aesthetic.

Poster Series The Poster Series project during MEJO 182 gave students experience in poster design while using typography and images to convey a message about a chosen UNC organization. Each student was required to create a poster, a flyer, and a social media graphic that promotes the chosen organization. I chose UNC’s baseball team as my organization. The poster featured information on a past event for the Diamond Heels. Last spring, UNC’s baseball program advanced to the College World Series, so I chose to focus on that event.

My flyer and social media graphic also revolved around the UNC baseball program, however, they promoted a future event for the organization. I chose to use the ACC Tournament for the 2019 season as my future event. My social media graphic focused on a certain player, and would be used as a series of graphics featuring each individual player. My flyer was more generic, as it promoted the team as a whole.

I chose to create a game tip sheet for my third project in MEJO 182, which portrayed how a game should be played and how to successfully win the game. Candy Land was the board game I chose to use. I had to create diagrams that showed how to play the game, while also providing textual information on the history, apparatus of play, and rules of the game. During MEJO 121, students were tasked with creating an infographic on a topic that was special to them; I chose to look at statistics found in North Carolina’s public education system, specifically those that show how NC’s public schools are lacking.

Visual Identity Each student was asked to create a brand for themselves for exercise three. The brand was made up of five words that represented the student and their values, while also creating three sentences to describe themselves. Students were then asked to create a logo, letterhead, and business card. I chose to incorporate a “barn quilt” into my brand since it correlates with the traditional value I hold.
I am a person who cherishes traditions, especially those within my family. I am very quiet, however, there’s always something going through my mind. I want to do a good job in whatever I do, but I’m not one that seeks attention for the work I do.
