ARCHITECTURE DEFINED Time and time again, I have been faced with the challenge of starting anew. In 1998, I lost my father to cancer, and in 2005, I lost my home to Hurricane Katrina. In both of these instances, the foundation upon which I lived – the culture which dictated the way I acted and apprehended – was deconstructed. It was from these unexpected precedents that I learned life is not a controllable entity. I developed an appreciation for resilience – a two-person family’s ability to readjust and a three-hundred-yearold city’s ability to rebuild. This desire to command an outcome, no matter the challenge, has manifested itself into a career in architecture, as a field totally dependent on adaptation. For me, life and architecture are not just outlets for imagining, but even more so, outlets for re-imagining. Thank you.

CATCHING THE CURVE PHILADELPHIA, PA University of Pennsylvania _ Senior 2013
36 30
“Architecture is an art born of another art because it is based on geometry, which is a visual art. This rewritten definition should not pass unchallenged, because we cannot be certain that architecture is an art, or that geometry is basic to it, or that the beauty of geometry has anything to do with the beauty in architecture, but at least it allows us to disabuse ourselves of a prejudice that still directs the understanding of geometry from within architecture.

ACW x Nike collaboration
4,300 hand-casted hollow clay pyramids were placed within and around a 1:50 scale model of the original University of Oregon Running track Nike was founded upon. As consumers entered, the pyramids were crushed, first to rubble then to dust, in a recreation of the original University of Oregon running track Nike was imagined creating a visual soundscape in its development. Only lasting 48 hours, the instillation sits as a figment of documentation representing the reflection of process and play and the temporal nature of material.
AA _ Dip 15
Conceptualized, executed, and actualized the Point of Sale room for Nike x A-COLD-WALL*'s Vomero 5 Product launch with Diploma 15 of the Architectural Association.

32
33
NIKE x A - COLD - WALL x AA Focusing on the idea of the visual soundscape, we looked to create a landscape of air, which would use light to highlight the garments and respond to that of the sound track – turning the room into a visual soundscape. Creating a distortion of the environment through three dimensionally rendering the sound. Exploring the relationship between the garment and its life cycle, we are proposing to fill the room with a series of airtight bags, each acting as its own microcosm and incubator for the garment itself, before each garment is then “released” to experience its lifespan.
34
The room will become a landscape of incubators microcosms activated by the light and soundscape, allowing the visitor to be fully immerged in the concepts of the soundscape and pushing forward the theme of the garments life cycle. In order to create each microcosm, the bags would placed/hung around the room, encapsulating life within each bag – equip with soil, light, and air, the microcosms highlights the inherent human qualities of each garment – speaking to a fashion far beyond materiality.
35
COMFORTABLY UNSTABLE _ DIP 17 Using comfort as a regisseur and an actuation of the space through the interruption of human loads, the physical environment creates a new type of escape from our so-called realities enabled by a degree of instability. Forcing us to challenging our sense of focus us to create new comprehensive views of actuality. Using control as a driver, I questioned the way in which architecture can act as a manipulator of space. Using the columns as a driver and a flexible skin as an interpreter of movement and human loads, reality becomes an oscillating network of relations and neutral pathways creating a synchronous communication – a new geography experienced in physical terms all enabled by a degree of instability. 36

THE MAGIC CIRLCE _ DIP 15 The Magic Circle is defined as the space in which the normal rules and reality of the world are suspended. A playground of possibility where the immersive environment breaks continuity of normality to introduce a sense of presence and sociability back into the city. By questioning the idea of owner ship, change, and control - the corner becomes a beacon of the shifting transactional retail space - a Stage for temporal commercialized play- blurring the lines between the horizontal and vertical within the city by reinventing the boundaries of the ground floor.
42
Acting as a community based mechanism in response to the current physical retail downfall; consumers and retailers agree to create a partnership to question the boundaries of land stake-holdings and create a new approach to the city typology structure. By reimagining the city as a system of network controlled by its inhabitants – The corner activates and deactivates celebrating the work of togetherness –to create a social space determined and controlled by the cities inhabitants.

URBAN INSITUTION BOSTON , MA Northeastern University _ Sophmore 2012

“I believe that the idea of the totality, the finality of the master-plan, is misguided. One should advocate a gradual transformation of public space, a metamorphic process, without relying on a hypothetical time in the future when everything will be perfect.’ -Daniel Libeskind See appendix [ Figure 09 ] 52 51

TYPOLOGY E D U C AT I O N A L 300,000 Sqft _
RESIDENTIAL 250,000 Sqft _
RESIDENTIAL/COMMERCIAL 100,000 Sqft _
I first reinforced the street scape by conforming to the street itself. I then approached the building type by creating a simple ring shape. This initial typology was then broken down for the different disciplines (academic vs. studio). I created a system of both embedded and exposed columns to create a regular grid in the studio section and shifted the grid in the classroom space. This shift in regularity emphasizes the street edge and differentiates between the classroom and studio spaces.

I created a simple public entrance on the first floor and an elevated ramping entrance for the school, bringing the landscape into the courtyard. This two way circulation creates a more formal front facing entrance which can be used to enter the public theater and voided outdoor space, while the exterior ramp allows students to enter directly into the school. The ramp not only serves as a mode of circulation but an area of recreation. Planted with green spaces as well as stepped seating, the ramp becomes a locale of socialization.

Project Description: Given an abstract elevation of Daniel Libeskin’s Jewish Holocaust Memorial located in Berlin, Germany, represent that section three-dimensionally within a 3”x7” physical space. Model and draw your convention. Design Approach: I first approached this project by using trace paper and tracing the hierarchical of elements within the elevation. I then created a physical system for each hierarchical element in order to translate these flat depictions into a 3-D manisfestation. I then layered and built the physical model of the 3” x 7” space and then drew my convention using hand drafting. Techniques Used: hand drafting, hand modeling

Project Description: Part I : Intensively research a phenomena found in nature in order to produce an analog which encompasses your understanding. Part II : Use this analog for a driving design inspiration, produce a prototype which is contextually woven into the prescribed setting of Quain Courtyard on the University of Pennsylvania’s Campus. The intervention must be relatable to the human scale. Design Approach: By using my initial studies of the way in which a fern unfurls and studying the site which was given, I created a modular light which can be placed in a courtyard which is underutilized because of its lack of light, especially at night. The lights, placed strategically around the outside of the bed, would bow as a pedestrian passes, allowing their path to be lit. Techniques Used: Rhino, V-Ray, Illustrator, Photoshop, hand drafting, hand modeling and milling

Project Description: Analyze the works John Singer Sargent entitled “The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit” and then conceptualized my analysis into an inhabitable path of egress through a museum space. Design Approach: Through my initial analysis, I interpreted the painting to have a multitude of layering systems and vanishing points guiding your view to certain areas of the painting. I then translated these ideas into diagrammatic diagrams overlaying my analysis with the painting. While designing my museum spaces, I continuously referenced by inital anaysis to become the parti for my “Museum Stair.” My path of egress used a series of layered tight corridor spaces which twisted you into the open museum spaces controlling your view as you pass through, undulating from large, open, spaces to tight, stairway corridors. Techniques Used: Rhino, V-Ray, Illustrator, Photoshop, hand drafting, hand modeling and milling

ARCHITECTURE IN REVERSE PHILADELPHIA, PA University of Pennsylvania _ Junior 2013 Project Description: Part I : Create a new type of connection given two assigned materials. Part II : Using the fabricated prototype as a generator for design, further develop a system of components to create an urban, inhabitable space. The design of the inhabitable space is coupled with research of module assembly, generative qualities, and materials, used in the original prototype. Design Approach: Focusing on the characteristics of the materiality both the metal wire and wood block, I created my connection by weaving the metal wire through the wood blocks to create looped spines. These spines then slide into connection points in the opposite wood block to create a tight, stable connection. By changing which spine goes into which slot, the wire screen, which is created between the two blocks, can be manipulated. These manipulations in the wire screen were then translated into degrees of enclosure. By studying the way in which the wire screen created different degrees of enclosure, I then translated these degrees to be directly relatable to the human scale. Techniques Used: Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, V-Ray, wood milling, wood drilling, cutting and metal weaving techniques

Project Description: Part I : By studying the two dimensional curved surfaces of a King Fisher recreational rowing shell, students will generate a space enclosing architectural shell. Design Approach: In my initial analysis, I studied the curvature of the boat shell and found that the sectional boathead I focused on progressed at 55 degrees. While approaching my cutting pattern, I used two sides of the bulkhead as radi of a circle and used the 55 degree angle to create sectors within each circle. In order to create a pattern, I expanded the angle as well as the circumference of the circle by 5% each time. Once the two circle sectors begain to interact, I used them as cutting tools on the bulkhead to create my initial pattern. I then expaned this pattern and manipulated certian points on certian sections in order to create cuves though varible rates of change. Through these transformations I created my final cutting pattern which created logarithmic curves on both the inside and outside in order to create a two-dimensional surface arrayed into a three-dimensional curved surface. Techniques Used: Rhino, AutoCAD, Illustrator, Photoshop, laser cutting and hand modeling, CNC milling
CATCHING THE CURVE PHILADELPHIA, PA University of Pennsylvania _ Senior 2013
06
Project Description: Part II: By analyzing the underlying geometries of a single rowing shell moving from shed to water, create a boat shed which uses geometry to define its interior and exterior with two-directional curved surface. Design Approach: In my initial studies, I studied the procession of a rowing shell as it is lowered from the hanging position. After these initial studies, I began to define my geometries of space in specific response to the way in which human interaction directly affects the lowering of a rowing shell. I created a series of construction points and connected these points using a formula of angles studied from my initial research. I juxtaposed the intimately linked interior geometry with a construction of Euclidean geometries. In order to create a three-directional curved surface, I arrayed this section and manipulated the rate of change of certain control points in response to the characteristics of natural light. In plan, the boat house also directly responds to the motion of a rowing shell being transferred to the water through human interaction as well. The sections demonstrate the two of the three thresholds studied in the design- entering, lowering, and launching.

Project Description: Using historic monasteries and Louis I Kahn’s design for precedents, design a monastery. This monastery should be detailed in three levels; to the human building scale, overall organizational scale, and topographical scale. While designing, keep in mind land-use and re-use, building organization and connections as well as daily circulation from public to private realms. Design Approach: I found that many of the monastery typologies used a grid system to organize their program. When approaching my overall monastic type, I started with an orthogonal grid which I organized my public program on to create a central cloister. I then shifted and rotated this grid to organize my private program. This central cloister is placed on the highest elevation of the site, with the private cell program embedded into the hill, taking into consideration the least amount of land-use and reuse possible. I then applied my methodology of axial vs orthogonal axis in both plan and section on many of the builings seen within the monastery. THE QUARRY NEW YORK, NY Bjarke Ingels Group _ 2015
Project Description: Using typology research and urban analysis, design a public school for the site. Development of tectonic and spatial strategies for the school will be emphasized, and must be evident in your drawings and models of the project. As part of your school design, you will develop a classroom module in detail, both interior and exterior. Typology defines the basic architectural parameters of a project, but it also allows for significant variation and invention among projects of the same type, playing the role of common denominator. The urban analysis will take three steps: a streetscape study, a figure/ground study, and a massing study.
Project Description: “HOT TO COLD: an odyssey of architectural adaptation is conceived as a colorful exploration of how architecture evolves in response to its context and climate and as an artistic contemplation of how life in return reacts to the framework created by the architecture. More than 60 architectural models, mock-ups and prototypes are suspended at the second-floor balconies of the museum’s historic Great Hall, turning the architecture of the National Building Museum into the architecture of the exhibition. The accompanying catalog by Taschen is designed in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning graphic artist Stefan Sagmeister.” - BIG

Design Approach:
Personal Involvement: My contribution to the exhibition was to build three of the architectural models which were suspended in the museum’s atrium. Two of these models are depicted on page 26. I also edited and laid out many drawings and pages for the Taschen published catalog.
Personal Involvement: With a very small team of four, I pl roll in the schematic design and d development phase of this project the nine story building as well as d elevations and details. I produced schematic design and design deve sets and am currently working tow construction drawing set for const in 2016. During my time on this te supported visualizations using V-R and built physical models of the b surrounding context. On a technic designed many details throughou including the stone facade arrang cantilevered balcony pools, as we with structural and mechanical en also created full marketing and de the client to sell to future homeow
I first reinforced the streetscape by conforming to the street itself. I then approached the building type by creating a simple donut shape. This initial typology was then broken for the different disciplines (academic vs. studio). I created a system of both embedded and exposed columns to create a regular grid in the studio spaces and shifted the grid in the classroom space. This shift in regularity emphasizes the street edge and differentiates between the classroom and studio spaces.I created a simple public entrance on the first floor and an elevated ramping entrance for the school, bringing the landscape into the courtyard.

Project Description: “The design of 2 WTC is derived from its urban context at the meeting point between two very different neighborhoods: the Financial District with its modernist skyscrapers and TriBeCa with its lofts and roof gardens. The design combines the unique qualities of each, melding high-rise with lowrise and modern with historical. From the 9/11 Memorial, the building appears as a tall and slender tower just as its three neighboring towers, while the view from TriBeCa is of a series of stepped green terraces. The building is aligned along the axis of World Trade Center Master Planner Daniel Libeskind’s ‘Wedge of Light’ plaza to preserve the views to St. Paul’s Chapel from the Memorial Park.” - BIG Personal Involvement: I first studied site analysis, program and massing studies while in the early phases of concept design. As the massing began to form, I created interior space studies, floor plan analysis, and worked with a team to solidify the facade. I also worked with my project manager to develop a concept storyline. As the concept phase deadline grew closer I helped with visualizations in V-Ray and Photoshop. Also, in the weeks leading up to the deadline, I built the final presentation model which was later featured in Wired Magazine’s October design issue.
