Dear Colleagues We are now in the midst of another hot and busy summer. My sincere thanks go to all of you working in both Dubai and DWC in the high temps supporting the operation. I hope you are taking personal care to be safe, rehydrate and rest when possible. The hub and airline continue to grow and face many challenges, whether it be the growing fleet, expanding network, remote parking, increased aircraft and ground movements, our drive for on time departures/arrivals as well as maintaining cabin temperature at an acceptable level for our passengers. I know it isn’t easy but it is your efforts and contributions that have assisted in the company being voted the World’s Best Airline 2016. A tremendous “Well Done” and my personal thanks as you continue to show the commitment and dedication in maintaining our fleet
and operation at its optimum. Your continuous efforts are truly appreciated. Whilst the fleet is growing with additional A380’s and B777’s joining we are phasing out our remaining A330’s and A340’s, aircraft that have served us well and will leave the operation by the end of this financial year. As some of you know, I am retiring in September and this is the last introduction I will produce for our Engineering Newsletter. I can’t help but reflect on the achievements you have all made in growing the company to where it is today and the confidence I have knowing that you will continue to do so in the future. Through my 16 wonderful years with Emirates I have had the privilege to work with you, a group of dedicated and wonderfully committed people who have delivered a product and service to the operation that is truly World Class.
been achieved and delivered during my time with you. Please don’t stop. There is much to do and we need to remember that we will only ever be as good as the last passengers experience. Stay safe, stay committed and dedicated. Please don’t forget that silence is acceptance, so be open and communicate your suggestions or concerns. Being part of Engineering, Emirates and Dubai has been an honour for me and will remain forever in my heart. Thank you ! Iain Lachlan DSVP – Emirates Engineering
I owe it to you for making my Emirates journey memorable and enjoyable knowing what has

06| Coming Up
When I arrived in 2002, little did I know that Dubai and Emirates were about to switch into top gear and embark down a road of unbelievable growth and success. It is hard today to properly recall the scene as it was then. Of course, there was no Palm Island, no Burj Khalifa, no Business Bay etc, the only place to buy essentials for setting up a home was Deira City Centre, Safa park still had grass and even the SZR had gaps between the cars ! Dubai was an altogether less busy place and yet even then I could see that this was a country and an airline that had set its sights sky high and was going to stamp 5 stars over everything it did. I consider myself very lucky indeed to have arrived just at the right moment to witness and be a part of the amazing changes that have since occurred. Now, before I write more, I believe that it has become customary to start farewell messages with words such as “when I joined we only had xx number of aeroplanes”, which then solicit gasps of amazement from the readers. In my case, XX was still a large number, 53 infact and co-incidentally the same number as my age today ! At that time, the A380 existed only in the minds of the Airbus design engineers. However, for me, airlines are as much about people as they are aircraft.
I vividly remember that shortly after arrival Adel Al Redha took me to meet my new team, Engineering Technical Services and Projects. All of the engineers ( many of whom are now retired) were assembled to meet the ‘new boss’, all anxiously waiting to hear what I had to say – I think that the total number of engineers was around 15. Compare that with today’s team size of around 100 ! Those of you that worked in the “old hanger” will recall that it had completely open plan offices across all the sections and so you really could know and talk with everybody everyday. I instantly felt at home and part of a family. Getting the first A340-500 configured and delivered in time for the JFK launch in 2003 was my first challenge. It was a challenge made greater by our First Class seat supplier (Britax) not delivering seats on time to the Airbus factory and consequently the first few aircraft arrived in Dubai with an empty first class cabin ! In true EK fashion we mobilised quickly to get the seats air freighted directly to Dubai and had them installed here. Soon after that the challenges came thick and fast. It started with the fast track induction and “Emiratisation” of eight second hand A340-300. Then on short notice we had 26 leased 777-300ERs to be configured and inducted in record time. Of course, in true Emirates style, we embarked soon after on the massive preparations for our A380 launch.
The latter project culminated in one of the most memorable moments of my career at Emirates. This was when we taxied down the runway at Hamburg in 2008 with a plane bursting full of VIPs for the delivery flight of our first aircraft A6-EDA. It was an amazing feeling of achievement after 6 years of preparations. Throughout all of these years I have been lucky to work with a fantastic group of people who have inspired me with their enthusiasm and friendship. I have made long lasting bonds with so many work colleagues here in Emirates and with a lot of colleagues that work for our suppliers around the world. This is really the magic of working in Emirates and living in Dubai. I have enjoyed immensely the many staff social events that we have had together. These happy memories will stay with me long after the technical challenges have faded into the background.
I would like to close by wishing you all a happy future and success in everything that you do. - Andrew Hoad

As a mother of two small kids, strangled with house chores and a busy office routine, it was a challenging decision for me to roll up my sleeves and get back into the student routine of tests, assignments and projects. It felt like Mission Impossible and wondered if I could play the role of Tom Cruise in real life, and come out of it with success; nevertheless, I took on the challenge two years ago and got myself enrolled for MBA (Supply Chain & Logistics) with a firm determination and old saying Now or Never! The journey of 18 months to cover 8 modules began with the toughest module for me which was Financial Analyses – numbers and calculations had never been good friends with me during my academic years, so all the more effort, resilience and patience was required right from the first kick. I’d always heard that hard work pays off but that became reality when I earned distinction in the first module. This laid the foundation of my determination and boosted my morale for all the remaining modules. With the same mindset I carved my way forward in order to maintain the same standard for the remaining modules. While the next three modules passed on smoothly and I was confident to be half way through, the greatest challenge awaited ahead of me when I delivered twins.

Indeed this cycle slowed my pace, I felt completely drained and entangled with various thoughts about taking a break and dropping out from the next modules. At times I became judgmental for managing house work, two small kids, two newborns, coping with office work and attending MBA classes was without any doubt a life of toil. But as it’s said “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the impossible you once thought you couldn’t”, I did not lose hope and continued to walk forward with the same zeal from one module to the next, without taking any break. Finally it got over with only the dissertation left behind which required a lot of dedicated time for research and analyses. This was the most difficult phase of my MBA as I had to isolate myself from family, personal and social activities.
twenties; as graduating with distinction being a working lady and mother of four makes this achievement for me most cherishable. I thank God for giving me the courage and strength to achieve my target, for blessing me with a caring family who supported me morally and for the nurturing and professional teachers who kept me motivated. I believe that every effort and sacrifice you make is worth the reward you get for it. With this note, the message that I would like to convey to all working mothers is to have faith in your will power, it is just a matter of stepping out from your comfort zone - ‘a mother is far stronger than a woman’, because being a mother you are always standing out of your comfort zone.
I had to spend hours in the library on weekends and also utilize additional public holidays for writing my dissertation. On other week days, I remember staying back in office for extra hours while some of the evenings were spent in the park under a tree or on a bench doing a word count for my dissertation or surfing material on the net while the kids could play around. The last days of submission were horrible when I had to stay awake till midnight or even later, but the very thought that it’s almost over kept me going, I could see the finish line right across the corner. I was not going to let go of my patience, my will and my pride. I wouldn’t have been happy enough if I would have done my Masters being single while in my early
Maintenance Planning Boeing fleet stream initiated 777 A-check interval optimization to support maintenance cost saving and increasing aircraft as well as hangar availability. Though there are various ways to achieve maintenance check optimization which includes paid service provided by Boeing Co. however team decided to first explore internal options, without additional cost. Through in-house optimization exercise, Maintenance Planning Boeing fleet stream delivered escalation on A-check interval from 1500 FH/120 Days to 2000 FH/125 Days. The expected saving on resource and material is estimated around 20% along with freeing hangar space to accommodate Emirates growing fleet maintenance requirements, resulting huge maintenance cost saving for coming years. In collaboration with Operation Planning and Base Operations, team adopted innovative method of bridging to accelerate optimized check implementation which was achieved in a very challenging time frame. -Lokesh Singh

Karibu! I cordially invite you to take a journey with me to my beautiful Country of Kenya, where the very first word you will meet is Karibu, a Kiswahili word that translates to a warm welcome!. The bustling city of Nairobi is the capital of Kenya, often used as a jumping-off point for safari trips. In addition to its urban core, the city has a large Game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos, and home to gazelles and zebras. If you would like to enjoy the Wildlife and the unique and fascinating scenery ranging from the Big Five (Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Buffalos), sandy beaches along the coast, fresh water lakes along the western part, a hill with the mystery of gravity-defying powers where water flows uphill in Machakos, and many more, then where else would you get these other than Kenya? In fact, nowhere in the world has a massive movement of animals as immense as the wild beast migration of about 2 million beasts at ago,
from the Serengeti Park to the Maasai Mara between July and October every year, an amazing experience. Please note, these are just the tip of the iceberg. For those who love wild life, hire tour guides in order to fully enjoy the experience. Kenya boasts a diversity in culture with 42 tribes each with an unique dialect, but all living in harmony and united by two national languages, English and Kiswahili. To further cement this cohesion, citizens from all these tribes are highly encouraged to intermarry, a practice that has boosted coexistence to a great extent. When you do visit Kenya, allow time and enjoy the Bomas of Kenya to learn more on the culture of the Kenyan people. Bomas of Kenya is a highly recognized tourist attraction situated on the outskirts of Nairobi and displays traditional villages and the culture belonging to the several Kenyan tribes.
It is easily accessible by taxis and is about a 20 minute drive from Nairobi City Center, or better still use the public transport commonly known as Matatus, a drop off at the gate will save you on transport costs. Bomas of Kenya was established by the Government of Kenya to preserve, maintain and promote the rich and diverse cultural values of the various tribal groups in Kenya. For Shopping, go to the Village Market which is a shopping, recreation and entertainment complex in the Kenyan capital and is a few minutes’ drive from the city center using the local taxis. Besides Nairobi, there are two other cities namely Kisumu and Mombasa, both of which are very hospitable and famous for tourism with spectacular and enjoyable sites.
Kisumu City has been pin pointed on the world map because in its neighborhood, there is a small town called, Siaya, from where Barrack Obama U.S President has birth and familial roots and helped launch his swift political ascent (he wrote about Siaya and his father in his book ‘’Dreams from my father’’). Kisumu is easily accessible by a 30 minute flight from Nairobi’s JKIA airport. Be among the thousands of tourists who visit to see the village and experience the culture of this amazing place where the world’s current most powerful officer came from? Besides, Kisumu is a port city where the thrill of real discovery and exploration reward the visitor with new and unexpected experiences and sights. Take pictures of the ‘crying stone’ for yourself in her neighborhood. You will want to come again and again.
In the neighborhood is Haller Park where there is lots of wildlife. Besides, there is also the fascinating Old Town which is reminiscent of the old days when the Portuguese ruled Mombasa, a good site in deed. And if you want to relax and enjoy your time go to one of the countless beaches in Mombasa. You will be spoilt for choice and they are simply unmatchable.
Mombasa city on the other hand offers travelers an exotic taste of the African tropics steeped in centuries of seafaring history. It is a cosmopolitan tourist hub and an island connected by bridges and ferries to the Kenyan coast. Mombasa is easily accessible by a 40 minutes flight from Nairobi’s JKIA airport. It is well known for fun and tourism and a journey with your partner will be memorable. I am sure you will enjoy the numerous sites such as Fort Jesus which is an ancient building dating as far back as the year 1593 by the Portuguese.
-Noah Ogwang
Catch the next EK flight to Nairobi and enjoy these appetizing sites. Nairobi is a five hour flight with 2 flights a day from Dubai. Onward connections to Mombasa and Kisumu are also conveniently available. If you can remember these six Kiswahili words? If your answer is yes, then book your ticket to Nairobi and feel fluent and at home in Kenya. See you in Kenya tomorrow!
In June 2015, 5,000 colleagues, including 675 from Engineering departments, embarked on their MyBC (My Business Contribution) journey, joining Phase 1 of the new Emirates Group performance management approach. In April 2016 a further 950+ Engineering team members joined in as part of Phase 2. In total 11,500 colleagues across the business have transitioned from using HR Review to MyBC. So how did Phase 1 go? We had lots of feedback from those using the new process and system and as a result were able to make a number of positive changes to the way the system is used. Engineering managers told us that although the initial stages had been a bit challenging; they were confident with the value that the MyBC approach to Performance Management provides. If you are one of our Phase 2 participants, you will have received an email in mid-April, with a video about MyBC, e-Learning, and roadshow information. You may have worked with HR and the MyBC team on goal setting for your area. But MyBC may still feel new to you and you may well be wondering what’s next?

Say Hello to our Digital Warehouse of the future
by Shajee Rafi
One of the most significant costs in engineering is spares inventory and we are always on the lookout for ways to help us manage our spares costs. As Emirates cabin is built specifically for the airline by our suppliers, this sometimes leads to parts that have very long lead time and very expensive. The challenge for us was to find an economical, fast, repeatable and airworthy manufacturing method for just in time cabin spares. A project that is being pursued aggressively and enables us to make sure that we have the necessary cabin spares on hand, is 3D printing of cabin parts. The idea is to supplement our inventory with a digital warehouse of virtual parts that don’t take up any storage space, do not age or subject to a shelf life and can be manufactured when the need for them arises, saving inventory costs and ensuring just in time spares availability. Not having a cabin spare or offering a less than pristine product to our customers is something we Emirates takes very seriously. The industry term for the manufacturing process popularly known as 3D printing is Additive Manufacturing, which is a process by which a 3D digital replica of an actual component is used to build up a new part in layers by depositing material, which in our case is a special,
15| Discover Engineering
heat resistant plastic conforming to stringent flammability, toxic gas release and heat release airworthiness certification standards. The process is divided into two parts preparation and manufacture. A sample of the part required is 3D scanned using highly accurate lasers and the resulting 3D copy is stored on a computer, our digital warehouse. When the part is required, the file is sent to the 3D printer, which prints the part layer by layer, melting and depositing the special plastic filament in very thin layers. Anything that is fitted to an aircraft cabin has to undergo a lot of tests to be deemed airworthy but the 3D printers currently only accept a limited range of plastics as raw material. First step was to find the appropriate plastic that could be used in 3D printing, we undertook extensive testing to ensure that all airworthiness certification requirements were fulfilled. The next step was to digitize some parts and start printing them, refine the post processing and painting process. As the plastic we use has the strength to weight ratio of Aluminum, it does not need the same amount of material as our conventional parts, resulting in a lighter, cheaper part that is just as functional and looks identical to the original. Additive Manufacturing has a lot of benefits it is not an instantaneous process, depending on their size and complexity of the part it can take some hours to build and one machine due to its build area limitation can only produce a few parts at the same time.
The next step was to not print parts directly but to use 3D printing to print moulds that could be used to make parts rapidly from aviation cabin approved plastic sheets, within 10-15 minutes through a process called vacuum thermoforming. We now had parts that could be painted but our premium cabins have wood grain finish and we collaborated with 3M innovation labs in Dubai, US and Japan to come up with a new finishing mechanism. A surface finish that can have our wood grain pattern printed on it like paper and quick to apply to a plastic base part, resulting in pristine looking parts ready to fit to the cabin. There are a number of avenues being explored in engineering to find new, innovative and cost effective ways to address the challenges that lie ahead. In November 2015, the Emirates Engineering Machine Learning Society was set-up, a group of over 90 volunteers that come together every Monday & Wednesday to learn, think, discuss and build machine learning based solutions to engineering problems. My section, Business Improvement in Base Maintenance has been given a mandate to find innovative technological solutions to business problems and Emirates Tomorrow, the umbrella set-up to seed innovation in engineering, has been working on a range of apps that are shortly going to be hosted on Engineering’s very own app store.
in. All this design, development, refinement, trials, procedures, risk assessment and regulatory framework have been achieved through individuals’ initiative and strategic collaborations and at zero to the business. The quantum leap in technological innovation during the last few years has given us an immense opportunity to leverage it for new business benefit and opportunities within the airline segment that was considered impossible before. There is no other section that is better placed to make the optimum use of this technology as Engineering! Use of automated drones and 3D printing are two such avenues that can benefit the business in a radical way. Both are emerging technologies especially in the aviation sector since the industry is heavily regulated. Once these initial hurdles are overcome, both represent huge business prospects for us. Imagine turning around an airplane in less than 2 hours as opposed to the typical 8-10 hours that it takes today after a lightning strike or a bird strike inspection; and imagine being able to “print” a cabin part as soon as there is a demand. The possibilities are only limited by our imagination.” Firdous Mohamed Khan VP Base Maintenance.
All of this activity coupled with full support from senior management, encouragement and clarity of direction has enabled us to achieve one of the things that I personally take immense pride

At Emirates, we believe that the appearance of an aircraft is an integral part of the image we portray. It not only carries the branding of the company but also plays an important part in how our passengers perceive the airline. Keeping this in view the Aircraft Appearance Centre (AAC), this consists of a Paint Hangar and an independent Paint Shop, which was established in 2010. Soon after, a Graphic Shop was added to the centre. The state of the art facility easily competes with the paint facilities at Boeing and Airbus, no other aircraft painting facility has such hi tech features and a fully controlled Environment Control System. The Hangar has 6 tele-platforms (TPF) or “flying Carpets” for easy access around the aircraft. The paint Hangar can accommodate many different aircraft types, including the A380. The Paint shop has 3 paint booths which can accommodate all types and sizes of components. Unlike other aircraft maintenance tasks or checks the aircraft repainting doesn’t have any particular time interval .It is based on the operator’s decision when it’s required. Hence, keeping in view the state of appearance of an aircraft, on average, Emirates repaint the aircraft approximately every seven years.
17| Discover Engineering
by Naveed Khan Taking into consideration the size of the fleet to meet this target, a TRT improvement reprogram is running because of which the repainting project ground time is reduced by more than 28%. Due to this reduction, AAC is now handling almost 34-36 aircrafts per year instead of the earlier 22-24. Last year, we also started A380 painting which is a completely new experience for us. For A380 painting, instead of normal stripper, a selective stripper is used to carry out chemical stripping. This is to make sure the composite and GLARE panels used on the fuselage are not exposed to the stripping chemicals. The Corporate Communications department has produced several time lapse videos about ACC which are now featured on our YouTube channel, they are worth watching and provide a better understanding of what we do. The paint shop carried out painting of all types of components from Nose cowls to passenger seat panels from Engine Fan blades to wheel hubs in addition to this ACC supports painting tasks on all types of maintenance checks. One of the major tasks the shop is undertaking is the in-situ painting of the business class seats on an A380’s during a ‘C’ check.
The Graphic shop fabricates all types of interior and exterior placards as well as promotional decals. Some of these decals are creating history - such as the decals installed on the A380 for the FIFA World Cup as it was the biggest decal installed on any aircraft. The ‘United for Wildlife’ decal also generated a positive response from passengers, promoting the campaign to save endangered animal breeds. Due to the positive reaction, we are planning to have these decals fitted on more aircraft. Like any other profession, the painting profession has its own risks and privileges. The paint that is currently used has some chromate and other chemicals which are hazardous. Apart from making sure that staff members have the latest protective equipment so that they are not exposed to these materials, we are also working on different projects with the paint manufacturers to have 100% green paints products.
Although we are trying our best to improve the overall appearance, it is an overall responsibility of the entire engineering community. Whether we are working in LM or BHM, we need to start using best practices which include (but are not limited to): • After each greasing task, make sure the excess grease is wiped off properly. • Open and close panels with clean hand. • After doing any maintenance task, especially after servicing, make sure the area and the panels/cowlings are properly cleaned before closing them.”
