We began with intentions to make our project a place that the public felt comfortable coming to, whether it be to enter the building or the garden. We also wanted to acknowledge the wounds of Tulsa’s past and incorporate them in our design in hopes of starting a healing process for the community as a whole.

SITE PLAN For this project we explored the injustice that comes to mind when people think about entering a courthouse along with the racial injustice that exists in Tulsa’s past. A large part of the program is an exterior garden that surrounds the Courthouse.

It is important to mention the Greenwood District that is highlighted adjacent to our site. This is an area where the black community in Tulsa once thrived and where the Tulsa Race Massacre occurred in 1921. The black community was destroyed by this event. Despite this massacre changing Tulsa forever, no one knows exactly what happened and it is not discussed often leaving Tulsa with an open wound.

BIKE SHOP Lawrence, Kansas
02 SITE CONTEXT This project is programmed to be a bike repair and retail shop located in Lawrence. The purpose of this project was to create a space for bike riders in Lawrence to be able to comfortably shop and fix any issues occurring with their bike.
The site is located on Mass and 11th which is a busy intersection, so the goal was to design a shop that appealed to the public as a whole - hopefully causing more people to ride bikes around Lawrence instead of using cars.
The chosen lot is currently an empty parking lot that is often not used, so with the development of this bike shop I planned to offer more and safer bike parking for the public.

I started by researching cyclists to better understand the intended audience I was designing for. This research lead to inspire my building form and facade.

The dynamics of power with biking are often done asymmetrically, so after research I based the form off of graphs made about how pedaling is often done asymmetrically when it is more optimal for the cranks are vertical.

From there spent time researching the circular motion of cyclists pedaling which is how I started with my idea of having an undulating facade. To make my form and facade cohesive I also used the graph from my form design to help determine how tall the wood blocking wold be. The rectangular extrusions made from the motion of pedaling

MIXED-USE HOUSING Lawrence, Kansas
36
37
03 PROCESS The development of this project began with my studio as a whole creating a new master plan for the University of Kansas. As a class we concluded that the university has a sense of separation due to the distance between different areas on campus.
Our goal was to create something that connected the campus together, so we designed a light rail system in hopes of bringing a sense of unity to campus life. After dividing up the lots throughout campus I decided to choose H2.2, which is on Daisy Hill - an area where dorms currently exist.

03 FORM DEVELOPMENT
My personal goal for the mixed used housing project was to create a space that made public and private spaces cohesive yet separate. I wanted both residents and non-residents to feel welcomed and comfortable in the public areas.
40
Mixed-Use Housing

The location on Daisy Hill inspired me to try and create a building that did not completely block the view from the hill to campus.
SITE PLAN 03

To combine these two goals I made two separated forms connected with a red spine. I chose red to pay homage to the red roofs seen throughout the KU camps. The spine intertwines the two forms through circulation and was emphasized through color.
I used the spine as I extruded and extracted pieces from the building, attempting to use color to show the spine concept breaking through the building. I then went on incorporate this concept into the way I connected the paths in my site plan.

DESIGN-BUILD Lawrence, Kansas
EMERGENCE GARDEN PAVILION 46
47
04 PROCESS This project was a design-build studio, and was accomplished as a class. Our site was located in North Lawrence and our client was the owner of the garden. This area of Lawrence is considered a food desert, so the community garden is used for the public to come and pick fresh fruits and vegetables available for everyone.
There is also a private section of the garden where specific people buy and use lots to grow their own specific vegetation. Our client was having an issue with keeping the public out of the private gardens and taking the plants and food that belonged to a specific gardener.
As a class we came up with a plan to create a more welcoming entrance and a shade structure to draw the public to the correct part of the garden. We purposed to create a more obvious entrance with limestone cairns and a path leading from the entrance to the structure.
We drew inspiration for our design from the migration of monarch butterflies that fly through Lawrence, and made sure to design aspects into the Cairn that would draw in different types of pollinators.

PROJECT SITE
The site is located in the Pinckney neighborhood on t dwelling. The neighborhood is near Lawrence Memoria The site is also near the pedestrian tunnel under 6th Str Currently, I am enrolled in Studio 804 under the guidance of professor Dan Rockhill. Studio 804 is a year-long course in which graduate architecture students plan, design, and build a piece of architecture. This is a unique and collaborative hands-on design-build program that teaches students how to research and develop sustainable, affordable, and inventive building solutions.
Aerial from S ou My classmates and I are working on the 519 Indiana Residence located in Lawrence, Kansas. The site is located in the Pinckey neighborhood on the 500 block of Indiana Street and was previously an empty lot between two existing homes. The design of the house is scaled similarly to the neighborhood it resides in and aligns with the longterm mission of the city of Lawrence for creating a sustainable future.
