In 1911, the University of Tennessee launched its Memphis campus, which is solely dedicated to health science education and research. Seed programs in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy quickly flourished, and soon each of these programs grew to become a college of its own.
Nearly 3,000 students are enrolled at one of the four major UTHSC campuses Memphis (main campus), Knoxville, Chattanooga or Nashville.
COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY Founded in 1878, UTHSC’s College of Dentistry is the oldest dental college in the South, and the third oldest public college of dentistry in the United States. The programs in dentistry are accredited by The Commission on Dental Accreditation. This Accreditation permits qualified graduates of the college to apply for all state and regional board examinations in the United States. As an institution of higher education, the College of Dentistry is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as part of the regular accreditation process of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In addition, the college is a member of the American Association of Dental Schools and the American Association of Dental Research. The faculty is organized by departments to constitute functional units in the major disciplines of the dental curriculum. In addition to the full-time and part-time faculty members in the College of Dentistry, the teaching personnel includes faculty from the College of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Graduate Health Sciences.

The college offers a full range of advanced training in endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, and a two-year program in dental hygiene. The main campus is in the Memphis Medical Center, which will soon complete a $300 million renovation. Over 800 residents and fellows attend programs and conduct patient services out of this facility and out of four core partner teaching hospitals.

GRANTS & RESEARCH Advancing research and economic development is at the core of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s mission. Research funding has directly contributed to UTHSC’s long record of accomplishments in basic science, applied clinical and translational research and public health, allowing us to continue our contributions to the health of the Memphis-area community. Through collaborative relationships with health care partnerships like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, we are well-positioned to pave the way for innovative patient-centered research and development with a clinical and translational focus.

ADVANCED PROSTHODONTICS PROGRAM
The Advanced Prosthodontics Program is located in the College of Dentistry’s Winfield C. Dunn Building on the University of Tennessee Health Science Center campus in Memphis. The Program provides advanced instruction and clinical training intended to facilitate the private and/or academic practice of prosthodontics. The Program complies with standards established by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation and qualifies residents for examination by the American Board of Prosthodontics. The curriculum is consistent with the expanding scope of knowledge in prosthodontics as determined by the American College of Prosthodontics and the American Dental Association. The curriculum relates basic science principles to the practice of prosthodontics. Clinical applications are emphasized while maintaining didactic and research activities throughout the course of study. Direct patient contact constitutes approximately 60% of resident activity.

Educate residents in the accomplishment of professionally valuable scientific research and scholarly activities.
Provide the opportunity for residents to participate in prosthodontic dental teaching and other service-based activities to prepare them to become emissaries for the College of Dentistry, the dental profession and the specialty of prosthodontics.
DENTAL PATIENT SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY STUDENT CLINICS
Treatment is performed by student doctors under the direct supervision of experienced University of Tennessee Health Science Center faculty dentists. Dental services are provided to adult and children patients who are selected from a screening process that determines whether the patient is a teaching case for students. Our dental programs cover routine dental care as well as the entire range of oral healthcare services. EMERGENCY DENTAL CLINICS Patients are treated on a first come, first served basis five days a week for toothaches, facial swelling or other acute dental problems.
GRADUATE/RESIDENT SPECIALTY CLINICS Provides specialty services for more complex dental treatments. Patients are seen by graduated dentists working on advanced specialty education and are supervised by attending faculty. Specialty clinics are offered for: Endodontics Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Orthodontics Pediatric Dentistry Periodontics Prosthodontics ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES Offers pathology services using the latest dental technology as well as clinical evaluations, diagnosis, therapy and management. UNIVERSITY DENTAL PRACTICE Treatment and procedures are performed by Dental faculty.

THE OPPORTUNITY Chair, Department of Prosthodontics The University of Tennessee’s Health Science Center, College of Dentistry seeks a Chair for their Department of Prosthodontics. The Department Chair will report to the Dean of the College of Dentistry at their Memphis, TN campus. This is a full-time, tenure track, faculty position that offers a competitive salary, commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The responsibilities of the Prosthodontics Department Chair will also include leading the faculty in articulation of the vision and goals of academic units, with emphasis on quality of the learning environment. In addition, responsibilities will include:
Monitoring, managing and approving the financial operations of the Department. Faculty and staff development including searching for and identifying candidates for vacant faculty positions. Reviewing and developing departmental curriculum and curricular offerings to assure fulfillment of accreditation requirements, employer expectations, and suitable standards of excellence. Preparing class schedules to meet all enrollment needs. Developing and managing preclinical and clinical prosthodontic educational programs.
A successful candidate will have a DDS, DMD or equivalent degree from an ADA accredited dental program, be eligible for licensure in the State of Tennessee and have a work history that includes involvement in teaching, service and scholarly activity. Preferred requirements include:
Prior administrative experience in health science education. Certification from the American Board of Prosthodontics. Training at an accredited postgraduate program in Prosthodontics. A MS or PhD degree demonstrative of prior research experience.
