About Awarded first place finalists for the BWBR prize, Zach Detterman and I showcased our design acumen, presentation skills, and personalities in front of an expert jury. Our project proposal responded to the "Timber in the City Competition" brief - which challenged participants to re-imagine a vacant waterfront site in Queens, New York as a vibrant and vanguard model of healthy, biophilic living for the future. Embracing the new structural and ecological potential of wood-frame construction, we designed a mid-rise, mixed-use complex which featured affordable housing, a large community wellness facility, and an early childhood education center, all integrated within a new exterior public waterfront space. The following pages include our award winning competition boards for LLC Timber Block.

ABOUT

Modern housing configurations tend to favor individual privacy over meaningful community interactions. Shared spaces are often confined to the ground floor - therefore, limiting neighborly interactions to dark and narrow isolated corridors. Without this authentic and necessary human interaction, the sense of community and shared purpose has diminished.

LLC Timber Block promotes a mid-rise, mass-timber housing project - focused on enhancing community through a live, learn and connect ethos. LLC Timber Block has reinterpreted the phrase, “bringing community together,” by literally and physically connecting shared community spaces. Community gardens, kitchens, libraries and workshops are distributed throughout the 8 residential floors - encouraging residents to interact with one another. These spaces are defined by the exposed CLT interior paneling, then extruded from the facade and framed by shou sugi ban.

LIVE.

A variety of different sized units are purposefully arranged and placed in a mixed order - to bring a diversity of different sized families together, living side-by-side. The integration of the vertical shared community spaces is composed throughout the residential floors, maximizing the use of these spaces by providing designated area for neighborly interactions. Residents feel fully immersed in the aspect of community through the designated shared spaces: the community kitchen, gardens, library, workshop, cafe and more! All of which are accessible by either the exterior stairway system, or two main elevator cores.

7

By using a single loaded corridor, units get natural light and ventilation on BOTH the NW and SE sides. By facing south, units get enough sun for passive heating - as well as the desired views to Manhattan and the East River.

Timber Interior | 2 Bedroom Unit

Green Roof The green roof helps to clean and filter the rainwater, while reducing heat gains to the building.

Outdoor Play

Alternating Two-Story Atriums

LLC Timber Block encourages “play as an important part of early childhood education and development.

Split atriums occur every other floor providing natural ventilation throughout two-story levels, meeting fire code requirements.

Natural Light The single-loaded corridor allows the SE facing residential units to recieve direct sunlight, and NW facing community spaces to recieve inndirect natural sunlight.

Outdoor Cafe Garden The outdoor green spaces on both the 2nd and 3rd floors include a community garden and cafe. In an extremely industrialized and over developed city, such as New York, it is important to include accessible green spaces into the architecture.

Program & Recreation Community programatic and recreational activities include: an indoor lap pool, indoor family pool, art room, music and dance studios, an auditorium, a running track overlooking the exercise area, weightlifting and free weight areas, group fitness classroms and shared kitchenets, a workshop, library and multiple community gardens.

LEARN.

LLC Timber Block promotes early childhood education by providing public classrooms for children 1 month old to Pre-K. It is during these stages of life that the foundations for cognitive, physical and emotional development are built. Programs for learning, such as music and dance studios, art rooms and outdoor play spaces are included to initiate mental and physical development even further. The lower “triangular wedge” of space is filled with recreation, education, and other community amenities. It is elongated to meet both the street frontage and riverwalk for opposite points of entry.

CONNECT. Community: a term used to describe people coming together, to live, to learn and to connect with one another. As human beings, we crave a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging is what connects us to the many relationships we develop. By challenging the traditional arrangement of housing blocks, LLC is able to create a new system of integral community spaces that can benefit our social, educational, and cultural life. These community voids, carefully distributed throughout the 8 residential floors encourage interaction and collaboration: like an indoor gardening center and a twostory library.

9

People can once again engage in neighborly activities, through the offered community spaces. The single-loaded corridor provides exceptional space for gathering and chatting amongst neighbors - framing the breathtaking views of the historic Queensboro Bridge. We can live, learn, and connect. LLC.

About I was elected as Set Director for the annual student led Fashion Show at ISU. In this role, I managed a small committee, delegated tasks amongst committee members, and ultimately designed the opening and closing stages. The 2018 Fashion Show centered around the theme of “Resilience” inspiring a minimalistic and modern design with organic greenhouse integrated elements. The opening stage was an abstract representation of mountains inspired by guest designer, Patagonia. The five mountainous forms, although simply constructed, created a vibrant and immersive atmosphere. Stage one was replaced by stage two during the intermission, which revealed over 40,000 handcrafted paper rings. Creating a “rainforest”, these paper rings truly illustrated an animated natural environment concomitant with the theme of resilience.

HALOTHER APY CENTER Studio Project Location Blank Children's Hospital – Des Moines, IA Partner Lauren Stokes Date Fall 2018

LO O K B O O K

About Lauren Stokes and I designed The Halotherapy Center for our Arch 301 studio, located near the Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. It is a place for natural healthcare, body rejuvenation and meditation. Halotherapy is an alternative holistic treatment for respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and airborne allergies which involves the inhalation of salty air. With this design, we eschewed the typical glass paneling for our curtain wall structure, and instead selected pink Himalayan salt as the primary material - as it is the most common substance used in halotherapy. With an impetus to bridge both the built environment and the natural landscape together, our design attempts to imbue visitors with a sense of organic serenity.

About As an intern for ASK Studio, I assisted senior-level team members in producing beautiful, realistic imagery of the unbuilt structure CUBE. Conceptually located perpendicular to the West Des Moines Public Library, CUBE was to be an outdoor public amphitheater offering an engaging and welcoming space for residents to gather. Live music, theater performances, outdoor movie screenings, and other such community driven events would manifest here. I illustrated drawings and organized award-winning board layouts submitted to multiple architectural design competitions during my time at ASK. Furthermore, I designed tasteful elevations and concise diagrams for the Iowa Architect Magazine submittal and other online posts. In this role, I worked primarily in Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as in Revit and SketchUp.

LO O K B O O K

About Arch 433 is a digital fabrication course examining computers as a design and manufacturing tool. The project brief instructed students to design a unique set of 3D printed joints capable of connecting metal rods together. Our design, TriTric Stand, includes seven 3D printed joints and 9 metal rods - all of which can be manually assembled into a geometric stand. In this course, students utilized Dremel 3D filament printers in addition to Rhino and Grasshopper design software. Arch 433 heightened my interest in 3D digital and computational modeling, and ultimately motivated me to pursue a minor in this field. In doing so, I continue to learn more about the application of these technologies and their potential to impact architectural design.

POTTERBOT VASES Individual Project Location College of Design – Iowa State University Class ARCH 433 Date Fall 2018

LO O K B O O K

About Another digital fabrication instrument accessible through the Arch 433 course was the PotterBot. User’s feed the PotterBot printer a code which is developed as a script in Grasshopper. The machine then ejects an ultra-fine clay through an extrusion piston and onto a bed, building the encoded model in layers from bottom to top. The course challenged students to write their own scripts, I elected to design and print clay vases. With a single script, I was able to create multiple variations of a vase by simply manipulating certain variables. For instance, the base diameter can be increased or decreased in size, which can dramatically alter the final print. In the same vein, adjusting the height, layer count, circumference, and many other variables will yield different end results. The following vases were all produced using this method.

About Arch 532 is an intensive computer programming course that focused on the implementation of parametric modeling techniques and the development of computational coding skills. Students were expected to recreate an existing building using digital modeling software. I chose to recreate the Vanke Pavilion, an art exhibition center featured at the 2015 Milan Art Expo. Complex and irregular in its configuration, the Vanke Pavilion is credited with neither symmetric nor modular features. The form was extremely difficult to recreate, yet to overcome this challenge I elected to model the exhibition center in three stages; Rhino for the form, Grasshopper for the aluminum panel facade, and Python for the rooftop railing. This project pushed my boundaries and ultimately strengthened my skills in digital modeling.

About My Arch 202 studio collaborated with Reiman Gardens for the kinetic art exhibition Forces of Nature. Alongside 76 of my classmates I helped design, fabricate, assemble and install the pavilion, Prisma - currently located on a 10,000 square foot garden site allocated specifically for the exhibition. Once the final design strategy was confirmed, we were partitioned into five teams: form, structure, base, netting and infill. I contributed to the “form group and helped develop the final shape and flow of the pavilion, as well as produced the final renderings for publications and advertising. Ultimately, my studio endeavoured to experience a design-build project in full - collectively we developed skills in design, documentation, construction and teamwork.
