The Nutcracker Like an early Christmas present wrapped up in a glittering ballet wrapping, The Nutcracker comes to the Key Theatre stage. What makes this an extra special treat for dance lovers is that this is a production by the celebrated State Ballet Academy
of Minsk. This is surely one of the most loved and popular ballets of all time and all the family will love it. For many generations, Tchaikovsky’s classic has been an integral part of the preChristmas season. It is as though the falling of snowflakes and the smell of Christmas spices could be turned into music and dance
as it tells the story of Marie, a sad little girl whose present of a nutcracker turns into a prince who takes her on a journey into the Sugar Plum Fairy’s realm. Sunday 9 October at 2.30pm and 7.30pm Tickets £20 (£18.50 concessions)

The Tragedian The Key Theatre is always keen to bring you productions that are fresh, different and exciting. So, we are sure you will welcome this Edinburgh Fringe and Brighton Festival award-winner. It is the story of the rise to fame of Edmund Kean, a drunk, actor and genius. Kean made his Drury Lane debut as Shylock in 1814 and changed the history of British Theatre. He was a
grieving, drunken megalomaniac, but poetry in motion on stage. This solo performance by Prodigal was called “Astonishing. A Dickensian masterpiece” by The Stage. Wednesday 28 September at 7.30pm Tickets £10 Concessions & Key I.P. £8.50

Ruddigore The genius of Gilbert & Sullivan is well illustrated in this rollicking classic. So let the Peterborough G&S Players take you on a visit to the quaint Cornish fishing village of Rederring where peculiar things are going on. There’s a bad baronet who has been cursed and forced to commit a crime every day, a girl crazy for love, and some professional bridesmaids in search of a wedding. Any wedding will do, they don’t mind just so long as they get to dress up Then there’s a haunted castle and a witch’s curse to boot. Oh, aar, there is! Such is the timeless quality of Gilbert and Sullivan that it is hard to believe that this comic
opera in two parts was first performed at the Savoy Theatre in London in 1887. Initially it was not such an instant hit as previous G&S classics, including its predecessor The Mikado, but it went on to become a favourite with G&S audiences. It is certainly as much fun today, and as melodic, as you would expect from the legendary duo. Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 September, nightly at 7.30pm, 2.30pm matinee on Saturday. John Cooper Clarke Living legend is an over-used term, but it surely applies to John Cooper Clarke, alias the Bard of Salford. The unique rapid fire delivery of his poems, alongside razorsharp gags and tales of the absurd, have created a career lasting more than 30 triumphant years. He first toured with BeBop Deluxe on their 1977 tour and has never looked back. During the punk era, he appeared with the greats of the time, including the Buzzcocks, Joy Division and The Fall. This earned him the mantle of the “Punk Poet”. Not many people could silence an enthusiastic audience desperate for some venom-spitting punk
rock with their poetry! John Cooper Clarke has also enjoyed chart success and his collection of verses, 10 Years In An Open Neck Shirt, is a constant poetry bestseller. Not many people know it, but he was also the original voice of the Honey Monster in the famous Sugar Puffs television adverts. Today, John is still a favourite at festivals across Britain, but you should grab this chance to see him up close and personal at the Key.

The Vagina Monologues You could imagine there would be fireworks if you got gobby Cilla Battersby from Coronation Street, fiery Chelsea Fox from EastEnders and minifirecracker Ruby Allen, also from Albert Square, together. Well, their alter egos, actresses Wendi Peters, Tiana Benjamin and Louisa Lytton do not disappoint in this hilarious and moving production about women and their sexuality. It is part stand-up, part cabaret, part serious drama. A relaxed and informal rapport between the trio on stage and the audience is surely key to its success. What may happen on any given night is a little unpredictable,
but this is a show by women, about being female, and it isn’t afraid to confront controversy head-on, dealing in a frank way through a series of monologues with sensitive subjects. It has been staged around the world and over two million women (and some men) are estimated to have seen it.

Forty Years On Forty Years On is a threeyear Heritage Lottery-funded partnership project. It involves Eastern Angles, the regional touring theatre company and Peterborough Archives Service, which is part of Vivacity. Between 1968 and 2008, the city developed from
a small historic Fenland city into today’s modern, culturallydiverse commercial centre. It was overseen by Peterborough Development Corporation. Through the Forty Years On project Eastern Angles and Vivacity will work with an army of volunteers to archive the treasure trove of the PDC archive.
Funded by the Arts Council, Eastern Angles will commission a writer to create a unique community play for the city to be performed in 2013. Find out how to get involved in the Forty Years On project, by emailing platformpeterborough@ yahoo.co.uk or call Keely Mills on 01733 207342.

Museum on Tour at Longthorpe Tower Take a rare opportunity to see inside one of Peterborough’s historic treasures as Vivacity teams up with English Heritage to open Longthorpe Tower for the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September as part of Heritage Open Days. Longthorpe Tower is the remains of a Medieval fortified manor house, built in the 13th century. Inside the tower spectacular medieval wall paintings have
been discovered, the finest in a domestic setting in Western Europe. Normally the building is usually viewed by appointment only, so this is a rare treat. Just for the occasion the tower will be populated by Medieval characters and a monk can teach you how to write with a quill, watch the Barber Surgeon at work, or learn military drill with the tower guards. The tower will be open from 10am-4pm and admission is FREE.

The Pit And The Pendulum Horror story fans are in for a nerve-jangling treat with this new production of the classic chiller. The Edgar Allan Poe tale has never been beaten for its pure terror and nail-biting suspense. But, it is also a mystery with a twist in the tale. It tells the dripping-with-dread story of William Trevelyan who sets out to rescue his young wife from the clutches of the wicked and lascivious Hellfire Club. Unfortunately for him, he has no understanding of what he is dealing with. Taken captive, he is tortured by the nightmare of a living grave, never mind the nameless terror of a fathomless pit. Then there’s
that swinging pendulum with its razor-sharp blade. Best not to think about that! This new play by John Goodrum stars Mark Homer, who is best known for his role as Tony Hills in EastEnders. And more chills ensue in Whistle And I’ll Come To You My Lad when a schoolteacher’s disovery in the ruins of a Templar Abbey leads to terror, while in Casting The Runes a magazine editor crosses a self-professed master of the occult by refusing to print his disturbing articles, and then things turn very frightening.

If you can imagine the hit panel show Whose Line Is It Anyway? with a Shakespearean twist, you’ve got the idea. It has been a hit on tour in America, Canada and New Zealand. It’s based on The Bard’s theory that we go through seven stages in life, which Kevin
Tomlinson turns into hilarious scenes on a variety of topics. The Scotsman called it: “Hilarious and heart warming.” Wednesday 21 September at 7.30pm Tickets £12 (£10 for over-60s and Key I.P. members), £8 children & students. Family ticket £32 (two adults and two children)

Liang And The Magic Paintbrush This is an inventive and gentle show with something in it for all the family. Crooked Timber Theatre will combine puppets, origami, live painting and video images to bring this well-loved Chinese tale to life on stage at the Key Theatre Studio. It tells the story of Liang, who dreams of being a painter, but is too poor to buy himself a paintbrush. In Liang and The Magic Paintbrush, you can join him on a magical adventure to find out if dreams really can come true after all. The show is created and performed by Gemma Khawaja
and is recommended for children aged four and upwards. Ian Woods, the General Manager of Norwich Puppet Theatre, had this to say about Liang and The Magic Paintbrush: “The show clearly captivated the children, and the adults were appreciative too. “The mix of shadow, film and puppets worked well and the innovative use of water as a paint creating transparency on the screen was as magic as the paintbrush in the title.”

The Sounds of Simon It is hard to believe now that they first burst on the music scene in 1957, calling themselves Tom and Jerry. They had a minor hit in America with Hey Schoolgirl, but thankfully went back to their folk roots and their own names to create the legend that is Simon and Garfunkel. Now this show pays tribute to Paul and Art and their huge hits that have included
Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs Robinson (from hit film The Graduate), The Only Living Boy In New York and Me and The Boxer. Some of their solo hits are also featured. Thursday 22 September at 7.30pm Tickets £15 (£13 concessions)

The Nick Ross Orchestra The lights soften, the mood settles. An audience waits for that first moment of sound. The Big Band is poised, relaxed, waiting for the lead. Then, as if giving body to an echo, the silky notes of Moonlight Serenade ... and the night is suddenly full and timeless. There are those who watch and listen, who tap a shy finger to the melodies, others who follow with a silent foot-beat,
still others who murmur softly through the lyrics, and those who simply permit a fleeting smile. But, common to all, are memories. The Cresset
Jimmy Carr An evening of non-stop jokes, gags and banter is promised with the return of ever-popular Jimmy Carr. Jimmy is one of the most original and distinctive comedians of his generation and has even learned to bite his waspish tongue (at times) to be just about safe enough for mainstream television. But, it is on stage when Jimmy gleefully forgets about being
politically correct and breaks loose, and unleashes his dark deadpan delivery on his audience. You may be in stitches, but can anything crack Jimmy’s cool? Make sure you see him live and un-shackled at The Cresset, as he sends up everyone in the news. Wednesday, 9 November, at 8pm Tickets £25
