Master of Architecture in Urban Design Thesis Project, Bartlett School of Architecture 2009-2010 Back to the Future: Envisioning Urban Ecological Corridors in Los Angeles The Ballona Creek watershed and the communities that exist within its boundaries are socially and environmentally unsustainable for future populations. As one example of the numerous watercourses that have been converted to stormdrain channels rather than maintained as natural entities, the Ballona Creek is primarily a wasteland. It discards extensive quantities of water and continues to damage the ecological diversity through the territory of Southern California. While contributing to the greater regional health of local watersheds and promoting native ecology, this design introduces a natural storm water drainage system, and an ecologically sensitive model of living that curates an active threshold between nature and the built environment. The proposal promotes a pattern of development that orients around a resource and an infrastructure, ultimately to propose an alternative lifestyle to that of the conventional Southern California suburb.

The Ballona Creek Eco-Corridor Model 1:2500

Materials Used: laser cut and hand cut cork & card The model emphasizes the natural water system as it traverses across the gently sloping topography. The model also demonstrates the difference in development between the left and the right side of the creek, the left develops over time through a series of regulations, retrofitting the existing urban fabric. The right develops a courtyard typology functioning both as residential and mixed use.

North Old Mammoth Road District Plan Mammoth Lakes, CA

North Old Mammoth Road District Area of Influence

The North Old Mammoth Road District Plan represents a future development opportunity for the town of Mammoth Lakes, and the chance to plan a community that reflects the values expressed in the General Plan. The District Plan outlines how to support the critical mix of land uses for its 48 acres, and encourage the critical mass to help make a recognized district and a pedestrianoriented community. The District is not defined by any one establishment, natural feature or distinguished architecture. However, its prominent location can easily be imagined as a town center for Mammoth Lakes. The intent of this District Plan is to reinforce this core community area as a desirable place for people to live, shop, and recreate, reducing the dependency on the automobile.

The goal of creating a walkable community underlies the District Plan– encouraging pedestrian-oriented uses as destinations, and supported by residential clusters connected to the destinations. Site visits revealed opportunities and constraints, which fostered the district development program for commercial, residential/ lodging, parking, and public and community spaces. It also instituted guidelines for sustainability, stormwater, solar, mobility, and land use and place-making practices. The North Old Mammoth Road District Plan, through its sensitive design, massing, and scale guides can truly create a “sense of place� that endures.
