About Me Emma Fulton is a soon-to-be Miami University alumna, graduating in May 2022 with a BA in Architecture and a minor in Sustainability. As an emerging designer and future Architect, Emma is excited to design things that will not only last, but will leave a lasting impression on those who experience them. In the course of her Architecture studies, Emma has developed a passion for environmentalism, as well as a love for graphic design.
Design Philosophy As children, our lives were centered around play. We saw the world through the lens of our own imagination. I believe that incorporating playfulness in design can bring out the child in all of us. This playfullness can be balanced organically with elements of sophistication, to create lively yet polished spaces.

Agricultural The public remains relatively unaware of the root problems and opportunities in the global supply chain. New technology is reshaping how our food is produced. An international horticultural organization has requested a demonstration unit to travel with its various expositions. This display module serves as an educational extension to the public realm where interaction will drive awareness, questioning and a more transparent connection with our food.
01
Concept To design a compact hydroponics unit which advances the field of vertical farming by educating the public, both children and adults, in Copenhagen, the most sustainable city in the world. The design will promote a sense of community in the new district of Nordhavn by creating public outdoor and indoor work spaces and providing opportunities to interact with people from all over Copenhagen.

Site Plan
Nordhavn is an up-and-coming waterfront district in Copenhagen, Denmark. The grow module would be placed near the Copenhagen International School which could provide a connection between the students and the relatively new practice of vertical farming. And since the port-side district isn’t fully developed yet, it could establish these grow modules as a fixture in the community and even shape the future of the district.

After a year in Copenhagen, the Blomstre Unit will move to the next sea side city. All elements of the educational unit can be packed back into the two partially deconstructed shipping containers and loaded on the back of a ship. The smaller information pod will remain in Copenhagen and an identical one will meet the larger unit in the new city.

Civic Design a new library for the Public Library of Cincinnati which is intended for young adult/ teen users. The project is to be located on a portion of the municipal parking lot to the south of Clifton Plaza at 333 Ludlow Avenue, extending to the south to Howell Avenue in Clifton, Ohio (Hamilton County). The YA/Teen library has a program specifically tailored to that age group and their interests.
15
Concept The driving force behind my design was the intention of creating an all-weather community space as a continuation of Clifton Plaza that acts as both a gathering place during the winter and a throughway from Howell Ave. to Ludlow Ave. The library itself is situated around this central corridor which is conditioned with the library year round and is accessible to the public 24/7, including ADA access. The library was designed to accommodate not just young adults, but everyone in the community ages 3 to 93.
16
The Library is situated on a slanted property where the front of the site is two floors below the back of the site. To the East is a large parking lot with an entrance to the Southwest. Also to the Southwest is the entrance to the underground parking garage for the employees and the shipping and recieving storage space.

Clifton is a small neighborhood in the north central part of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Ludlow Avenue business district has been designated Cincinnati’s first “Main Street neighborhood” in a program sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The site of the Clifton Young Adult Library is a parking lot which abuts an existing pocket park called Clifton Plaza which is owned and maintained by organizations in the city.

Landscape Redesign a pocket park in Clifton to fit the needs of the very active community. Clifton Plaza was created 10 years ago replacing a former single story infill building. In the years since its creation, it has become the unofficial heart of Clifton. Since the beloved park has a variety of uses including yoga classes, a pop-up dog park, weekend concert venue, and general community gathering space, the design had to be flexible and include something for everyone.
27
Concept For a space that is as loved as Clifton Plaza is, everyone has an opinion on how to improve the space. My hope is that the New Clifton Plaza could become a space that works for and encourages the involvement of everyone ages 3 to 93.

The middle of the park has recessed jumping fountains for children to play in and can be turned into a small ice rink in the winter.
Collapsible fences are located in the storage box at the front of the park which can be opened to instantly create a dog park in the city.

Clifton Sign with Detachable Stage
At the South end of the site, there is an adult-friendly area with a bar, seating, and a sunken fireplace. The bar has storage behind the stage and green wall which could be unlocked for specific age-appropriate events.
The community has frequent events in the plaza requiring a stage to play on. This stage comes apart in pieces which can be stored next to the sign. The letters can then be played on and pictures can be taken with them, with the green wall as a back-drop.

Peace Poles
Storage, Bike Rack & Chalkboard
In the final hole for the trees on the upper level of the plaza, there are three peace poles which will be decorated by the community.
Along with the collapsible fence, the plaza’s piano can be stored in the shed at the front of the site for the winter. Next to the storage space is a bike rack and a chalkboard for community interaction.

Mixed-Use Urban agriculture is a social movement for sustainable communities, where organic growers, foodies, and locavores form social networks founded on a shared ethos of nature and community. People who live in cities need a more direct access to fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat products through urban agriculture. In addition to improving residents’ food access options, the urban food hub can serve as a fresh produce pick-up location, make commercial kitchen equipment available to small-scale producers, host nutrition classes and serve as an anchor for the local community.
35
Concept By introducing more eco-friendly food, cleaning, and shopping options, The Juneau Ave. Center for Sustainability aims to encourage residents and tourists alike to consider a more sustainable lifestyle. The bar, café, and restaurant will draw people inside, where they can learn about vertical farming, shop for fresh produce, new clothes, jewelry, and household products, check out books on climate-friendly living, and so much more.

About Superior Fresh Farms Superior Fresh, located in Hixton, Wisconsin, is home to the largest aquaponic farm in the world. The company specializes in organic leafy greens, steelhead trout, and Atlantic salmon. Currently, Superior Fresh produces 200,000 pounds of fresh salmon per year.
Superior Fresh Farms Aquaponics System Our farm is an ecosystem, each organism playing an important role in the balance of life. Our fish thrive in the water that feeds our organic leafy greens, our greens purify the water that is then returned to our fish. And our people nurture this ecosystem, maintaining the delicate balance.
Phase III Expansion Proposal Superior Fresh farms has built two phases of greenhouses. The Juneau Avenue Center for Sustainability will be the phase three expansion into tomatoes, strawberries, and various herbs. With its proximity to the busy city, the JACS can supply the fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs to local restaurants and businesses easily, and can educate people about the healthy growing practices.

Landscape Examine global physical boundaries and borders, and the laws, both American and International, that have been developed to frame ideologies and actions. Explore and question what is meant by “migration”, “immigration” and “territory.” After extensive research into immigration laws in the US and Mexico, international laws, and a four hour simulation, the studio came up with some possible solutions to the problems at our Southern border. These included proposed migrant housing, healthcare, cultural centers, transportation, and a bridge meant to address both the animals and the indigenous peoples of the land. 47
Concept Skywoman Falling is an indigenous peoples’ origin story describing a symbiotic relationship between humans and the earth. This bridge would be a step towards that in Laredo. . . harmony and compassion between humanity and nature. The Ecology Bridge would create a path to connect animals to the rest of their kind across the US - Mexico border and would allow ancient migration paths to continue uninterupted above the cities of Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. In addition to bridging the gap between the two countries’ animals, the Geese Lookout Points have information to educate passersby about the indigenous peoples of the area and the animals the bridge is helping to cross the artificial border.
